The city-river-reservoir system is an important system for safeguarding drinking water. Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) are emerging contaminants in drinking water sources that are gaining attention, and they could pose risks to human health and aquatic organisms. In this study, field studies that lasted four years were conducted to analyze the concentrations, spatial-temporal distribution, and removal effects of six PAEs. The total concentrations of the Σ6PAEs in the water and sediment samples were 0.2–7.4 μg L −1 (mean: 1.3 μg L −1 ) and 9.2–9594.1 ng g −1 (mean: 847.5 ng g −1 ), respectively. Di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) and, bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) were the predominant congeners, accounting for 57.2 % in the water samples and 94.1 % in the sediment samples. The urban area contributed 72 % of the PAEs in the system. A significant removal effect of PAEs was observed in the wetland, with a removal rate of 40.2 %. The partitioning of PAEs between the water and sediment was attributed to the removal of dimethyl phthalate and diethyl phthalate that occurred during the water phase, while the removal of DBP and DEHP primarily occurred during the sediment phase. The ecological risk calculation based on the sensitivity distribution model indicated that DBP (HQ water = 0.19, HQ sediment = 0.46) and DEHP (HQ water = 0.20, HQ sediment = 0.13) possessed moderate risks according to some water and sediment samples. The ecological projects were verified to be effective engineering strategies to reduce ecological risk in the drinking water source.

The prevalence and persistence of phthalate esters (PAEs) in agricultural soils has garnered global attention. Assessing their potential impacts on crop yield and quality necessitates a thorough understanding of their risks. In this study, we elucidated the carbon flow-dependent mechanisms of the decreased grain quality upon exposure to PAEs through a soil-based rice cultivation experiment. Combining metabolomics and transcriptomics methods, our findings revealed that the glycolytic intermediates derived from sucrose breakdown preferentially flowed towards amino acid synthesis, rather than starch and fatty acid synthesis under exposure to dibutyl phthalate (DBP) or di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP). This redirection led to decreased levels of starch (by 14–23 %) and fatty acids (by 10–40 %) in the grains. Notably, the increased amino acids primarily served as antioxidants to mitigate DBP and DEHP stresses, rather than enhancing protein quality. Consequently, a reduction in protein levels by 5.7–38 % was observed. Moreover, our study pinpointed glucose-6-phosphate, a common precursor for amino acids, fatty acids, and starch synthesis, as the crucial branching node in glycolysis that redirected this carbon flow. This study offers a new perspective for evaluating the ecological risks associated with PAEs, paving the way for future research and interventions to mitigate their adverse effects on crops.

Phthalate acid esters (PAEs) are a kind of typical endocrine disruptors chemicals (EDCs). PAEs can be enriched, migrated and released into organisms through microplastics (MPs), causing high toxicological risks. This study presented an atmospheric pressure gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (APGC-MS/MS) method for 10 PAEs trace analysis. Based on this method, the interaction mechanism between polyvinyl chloride microplastics (PVC MPs) and PAEs was explored. The established APGC-MS/MS method achieved 10 PAEs analysis in 14 min with the satisfied detection limit as low as 0.0025 μg/L and excellent linearity (R 2 = 0.99868–0.99996). The interaction mechanism investigation showed that PVC MPs had high adsorption and desorption capacities for PAEs. The adsorption mechanism involves adsorption distribution, surface adsorption, hydrophobic interaction and intermolecular van der Waals force. Temperature, diffusion channels, pore filling, hydrophobicity and solubilization may be potential desorption mechanisms. Moreover, the intestinal environment of warm-blood organisms has the highest bioavailability of PAEs. Overall, this APGC-MS/MS method of PAEs had the virtue of simplicity, efficiency, reliability and sensitivity, and could serve as a potential tool for risk analysis of MPs and PAEs exposure.

The widespread use of plastic products in agriculture has introduced micro-nano plastics (MNPs) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) into soil ecosystems, disrupting microbial communities and altering metabolite profiles. However, their effects on the rhizosphere soil characteristics of medicinal plants like dandelion remain understudied. This study systematically examined the impact of PS NPs and DBP on rhizosphere microbial communities and metabolites by integrating high-throughput sequencing with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Results demonstrated that individual and combined exposures to PS NPs and DBP decreased soil pH, organic matter content, and enzyme activities while reshaping the diversity, structure, and composition of rhizosphere bacteria and fungi. Notably, bacterial network stability and complexity increased under combined exposure, while fungal networks became more simplified, with a 33.72 % decrease in positive correlations. We identified potential PS NPs and DBP-degrading bacteria and biomarkers, including Nocardioides , Pseudarthrobacter , and Arenimonas . We revealed that co-exposure elevated differential soil metabolites associated with tyrosine metabolism and steroid biosynthesis. The significant positive associations between rhizosphere microorganisms and metabolites highlighted that metabolite accumulation was a key microbial response mechanism to stress. However, within the complex soil environment, the compensatory actions of microorganisms and metabolites were insufficient to mitigate the detrimental effects of PS NPs and DBP, resulting in continued inhibition of dandelion growth by 38.66 %. Consequently, these findings highlight that soil fungi and metabolism play key roles in responding to stress and influencing crop growth, providing novel insights into the impact of nanoparticle and plasticizer exposure on medicinal plant cultivation.

MXene-based Ti 3 C 2 T X composite aerogels (βCD-MXene-SA) were prepared using thin layers of MXene and sodium alginate (SA) as matrix materials, β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) as surface modifier, and epichlorohydrin as cross-linker. The βCD-MXene-SA was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and the results demonstrated that the βCD-MXene-SA had a larger specific surface area and a more developed pore structure. In addition, the maximum adsorption capacity of this βCD-MXene-SA for dibutyl phthalate (DBP) under the optimal adsorption conditions was 25 mg/g. The adsorption kinetics showed that the adsorption process was in good agreement with both kinetic models. The adsorption isotherms were consistent with the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models, suggesting that the adsorption of DBP by βCD-MXene-SA was the result of the combined effect of physisorption and chemisorption. The adsorption process may include monolayer adsorption on homogeneous surfaces and multilayer adsorption on multilayer surfaces. Outside, the ecotoxicological effects of DBP on crops were explored. The results showed that the treated wastewater could promote the growth of green beans, indicating that the toxicity of wastewater was significantly reduced after adsorption treatment.

Polystyrene nanoplastics (PS NPs) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) pollution pose significant risks to ecosystems and contribute to bioaccumulation in plants, yet uptake mechanisms and combined toxicity are poorly understood. We used fluorescent labeling and europium-doped PS NPs to reveal the absorption and translocation of NPs by dandelions and conducted a transcriptomic analysis under PS NPs and DBP exposure. The results indicated that NPs are transported horizontally through the intercellular gaps at the root tips and primary root-lateral root junctions via the apoplastic pathway, followed by longitudinal transport through the xylem vessels under the transpiration stream. Co-exposure significantly reduced the bioconcentration factors of dandelion seedlings by 113 % but increased the NP transfer factors by 33.8 %. Transcriptomic analysis confirmed that exposure to PS NPs and DBP activated gene expression in dandelion shoots and roots. The differentially expressed genes were primarily involved in the photosynthesis, plant hormone signal transduction, and phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathways. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis identified key genes and hub transcription factors playing crucial roles in regulating dandelion's response to combined stress. Our study provides new insights into the plant toxicity mechanism underlying the interaction between PS NPs and DBP, highlighting the adverse effects of the combined pollution on plant health.

Extensive import of mixed phthalate esters (PAEs) threatens
Mollisol
ecosystems. Nevertheless, mechanisms through which plant roots orchestrate
the cometabolic degradation of PAEs and couple this with soil humification
remain unclear. This study integrated plant physiology, untargeted
metabolomics, and genome-resolved metagenomics to decipher response
trajectories of the Pak Choi–Mollisol root–microbe system
across a mixed PAEs gradient. The findings indicated that under mild
stress (5 mg/kg), plants sustained a “growth-driven”
homeostasis alongside a stable rhizospheric microbiome. In contrast,
acute toxicity (20 mg/kg) initiated pronounced metabolic shifts, characterized
by a “survival-overgrowth” strategy. Specifically, carbon
fluxes shifted from primary assimilation to secondary defense hubs.
This physiological tradeoff reversed the root exudate profile, shifting
from basic carbohydrates to massive efflux of specific organic acids
and phenolics. Critically, these allelochemicals functioned as exogenous
elicitors, selectively recruiting specific metagenome-assembled genomes
(MAGs). Genomic evidence confirmed that single keystone MAGs (Pseudomonas
and Burkholderia) coharbored pcaG/H and extracellular laccase genes,
establishing a self-contained cometabolic module for concurrent PAEs
degradation and carbon stabilization. Consequently, based on correlative
multiomics evidence, extensive carbon efflux was associated with a
putative coupling between PAEs detoxification and stable humic carbon
accumulation, as indicated by a 48.7% increase in the humification
index (HIX). Ultimately, this multiomics framework elucidates the
plant-driven enhancement of carbon sinks within contaminated soils.

Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) accumulation threatens soil microbial communities, yet its effects on microbial assembly mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigated the impacts of DBP with a wide range of level (i.e., 0–40 mg kg −1 , DBP0, DBP10, DBP20, and DBP40) on microbial community assembly processes in black soil of Northeast China through 90-day controlled laboratory incubations. A framework of infer community assembly mechanisms by phylogenetic bin-based null model analysis (iCAMP) was used to qualify the soil community assembly processes. The findings demonstrated significant reductions in soil enzyme activities (urease, β-glucosidase) and respiration intensity with elevated DBP concentrations. Microbial α-diversity declined significantly, with Shannon and Chao1 indices decreased by 1.79 % and 4.78 % for DBP10, 5.29 % and 9.70 % for DBP20, 14.66 % and 10.22 % for DBP40, respectively. The abundance of bacteria linked to soil carbon and nitrogen cycling exhibited reduction, such as Nocardioides (decreased from 1.24 % to 0.52 %) and Gp6 (decreased from 5.65 % to 3.67 %). Conversely, the relative abundances of bacteria which are associated with DBP degradation increased, such as Streptomyces (Increased from 20.21 % to 34.01 %) and Bacillus (Increased from 2.49 % to 5.21 %). DBP significantly altered microbial community assembly processes. As DBP concentration increased, the relative importance of homogeneous selection rose from 45.41 % to 55.63 %, while dispersal limitation declined from 48.89 % to 35.09 %. DBP homogenizes environmental conditions and a transition from neutral diffusion dynamics to pressure-driven selection, favoring taxa adapted to DBP degradation. This study advances understanding of DBP’s ecological impacts on soil microbial communities and their assembly dynamics.

Phthalates (PAEs) are emerging organic pollutants that threaten agroecosystems by diminishing agricultural productivity and posing risks to human health. However, traditional organic fertilizers have limited effectiveness in remediating PAE-contaminated soils, while bacterial remediation often lacks stability in heterogeneous soil environments. Here, a novel bio-organic fertilizer (N-BOF) containing the PAE-degrading Bacillus megaterium YJB3 was evaluated in pot experiments for its effectiveness in remediating PAEs-contaminated soils. Results revealed that N-BOF significantly reduced PAE concentrations in soil. At PAE levels of 20 and 100 mg/kg, N-BOF reduced DBP and DEHP concentrations by over 96 %, with a maximum reduction of 99.39 %. Additionally, N-BOF significantly enhanced soil physicochemical properties, increasing organic matter (OM), total organic carbon (TOC), cation exchange capacity (CEC), nutrient availability, and pH. N-BOF also improved the soil bacterial community, enhancing diversity, degradation capacities, and the abundance of aromatic compound-degrading bacteria. Ecological risk assessments demonstrated that N-BOF effectively mitigated PAE contamination risks, reducing the risk quotients (RQ) of DBP and DEHP to safe levels. This study provides practical strategies and theoretical insights for the sustainable remediation of PAE-contaminated soils, utilizing composting to simultaneously improve soil fertility and effectively eliminate PAEs.

Covered stents have made a significant contribution to managing coronary artery perforation (CAP). Biocompatibility and toughness are critical properties for the covering membrane of covered stents. The mismatch between covered stents and patient coronary arteries in the clinic restricts the application of covered stents for emergency CAP. The ability to rapidly in situ coating of the stent at the rescue scene has so far been elusive, especially for small-diameter coronary artery covered stents. Here, we investigate a rapid coating technology of covered stents with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/dibutyl phthalate (DBP) covering membrane for CAP. The highly tough membrane and the short coating timeframe make it possible to prepare the covered stent suitable for patients with emergency CAP. In vitro cell assays demonstrated the excellent biocompatibility of the covering membrane. Moreover, in vivo evaluation in a rabbit model demonstrated successful delivery of the covered stent through the sheath system and effective sealing of vascular perforation.

Introduction: Di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) is one of the most widely used phthalate esters (PAEs) and is considered an emerging global pollutant. It may pose a significant threat to ecosystem and human health due to its residual hazards and accumulation in the environment. Bacteria-driven PAE biodegradation is considered an economical and effective strategy for remediating such polluted environments. Methods: A DBP-degrading bacterium (P-7), was isolated from long-term film mulched cotton field soil. Its identity was confirmed via physiological, biochemical, and 16S rRNA gene analyses. The degradation conditions were optimized through single-factor experiments and response surface methodology (RSM).Furthermore, the whole-genome sequencing coupled with metabolomics was employed to elucidate metabolic mechanisms. Results: Priestia megaterium P-7 (P. megaterium P-7) achieved 100% DBP removal within 20 h under optimal conditions and exhibited broad substrate specificity for other PAEs. Genomic analysis identified key genes (lip, aes, ybfF, estA, and yvaK) encoding esterases/hydrolases that initiate DBP catabolism, converting it to phthalic acid (PA). Subsequent decarboxylation (pdc, bsdCD, mdcACDH, and lysA) and dioxygenase-mediated steps integrated PA into the TCA cycle. Metabolomics revealed three degradation pathways: decarboxylation (DBP → MBP → BB → BA→Catechol), hydrolysis (DBP → MBP → PA → PCA → Catechol) and direct β-oxidation (DBP → DEP → MEP → PA → Catechol). Conclusion: P. megaterium P-7 demonstrates exceptional degradation efficiency, substrate versatility, and environmental stress tolerance, making it a promising candidate for bioremediation of organic pollutants in contaminated soil.

Organophosphate diesters (di-OPEs) and hypochlorous acid (HOCl) are two typical indoor pollutants, which have been proved to negatively impact respiratory health. However, the underlying molecular mechanism of them acting on pulmonary phospholipids remains poorly understood. In this study, using 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospho-(1′-rac-glycerol) (POPG) as a model phospholipid, di-OPEs were found that can significantly amplify interfacial chemical damage induced by HOCl. This damage amplification effect can be observed in both alkyl- and aryl-di-OPEs, which shows concentration-dependence. This phenomenon can be attributed to two synergistic effects. Firstly, acidic phosphate group of di-OPEs lowers the system pH. This stabilizes HOCl in its undissociated neutral form, thereby preserving the highly oxidative reactivity of HOCl. Secondly, the lipophilicity of di-OPEs promotes their accumulation at the air-water interface, which elevates the H⁺ concentration in interfacial region. Such high interfacial concentration of H + aggravates the hydrolysis of POPG, thereby intensifying the overall chemical damage. Overall, this study offers a molecular level insight for clarifying the health implications of indoor di-OPEs in the presence of HOCl and lays the groundwork for evidence-based risk assessment.
