Microwave Curing of FA- and MK-Based Geopolymer Gels: Effects on Pore Structure, Mechanical Strength, and Heavy Metal Leachability

Yanhui Dong,Runhui Gao,Yefan Li,Fuchen Wang

Microwave curing has proven to be a highly effective method for enhancing the structural integrity, compressive strength, and heavy metal immobilization performance of geopolymer (GP) gels. For fly ash-based GP gels, optimal compressive strength (126.84 MPa) and minimal heavy metal ion leaching (0.01 mg/L) were achieved under microwave irradiation at 100 W for 75 s. Similarly, metakaolin-based GP gels reached peak compressive strength (76.84 MPa) and reduced heavy metal leaching (0.44 mg/L) under 440 W irradiation for 60 s. Microwave energy significantly accelerates geopolymerization by promoting the aggregation of dispersed particles, rapidly forming a dense, block-like matrix. This accelerated densification enhances the mechanical properties of GP gels within minutes. Moreover, the dense matrix structure effectively encapsulates heavy metal ions, minimizing their leaching through a combination of physical encapsulation and chemical bonding. In summary, microwave treatment significantly enhances both mechanical performance and heavy metal immobilization, offering a practical pathway for sustainable applications.

Protective Effects of Zein/Ferulic Acid (FA)–Pectin (PEC)/Chitosan (CS) Nanocomplexes on DSS-Induced Ulcerative Colitis in Mice

Yifei Guo,Xinyu Yu,Rongrong He,Jianfei Pei,Haiming Chen,Weijun Chen

Ferulic acid (FA) exhibits beneficial properties in ulcerative colitis (UC) pathogenesis, while sensitivity to the environment and enzymes limits its use in UC therapy. Therefore, this study aims to develop a colon-targeted nanocomplex delivery system using FA and investigate its protective effects and underlying regulatory mechanisms in UC mice. A novel Zein/FA–pectin (PEC)/chitosan (CS) nanocomplex was successfully fabricated in this study. Through systematic adjustment of the PEC/CS-to-Zein/FA ratio, optimal encapsulation efficiency (60.1%) and loading capacity (26.2%) were achieved. The characterized data indicated that hydrogen bonds, electrostatic interactions, and hydrophobic forces were the main driving forces maintaining the formation of the nanocomplexes, accompanied by alterations in the secondary structure of Zein. The Zein/FA–PEC/CS nanocomplexes demonstrated excellent thermal/storage particle size stability and exhibited both protective and sustained-release effects of FA during simulated gastrointestinal digestion. Furthermore, the results demonstrated that the nanocomplexes potentially alleviate UC by regulating inflammatory cytokines, oxidative stress, and gut microbiota. Compared to unencapsulated FA, the nanocomplexes have a better effect on alleviating UC symptoms. In summary, Zein/FA–PEC/CS nanocomplexes have promising prospects in alleviating colitis in UC mice.

Hollow Mesoporous Bi@PEG-FA Nanoshell as a Novel Dual-Stimuli-Responsive Nanocarrier for Synergistic Chemo-Photothermal Cancer Therapy

Yao Huang,Zhenluan Xue,Songjun Zeng

The development of stimuli-responsive multifunctional nanocarriers for therapeutic drug delivery is extremely desirable for highly specific treatment of disease. Herein, thiol–polyethylene glycol–folate acid-modified hollow mesoporous bismuth nanoshells (HM-Bi@PEG–FA NSs) were developed as the new dual-stimuli-responsive single-“elemental” photothermal nanocarriers for synergistic chemo-photothermal therapy of tumor. The designed hollow-mesoporous-type nanocarriers present excellent photothermal conversion capacity (∼34.72%) and good biocompatibility. Meanwhile, acidic pH and near-infrared (NIR) laser dual-stimulated doxorubicin (DOX) release is successfully achieved. More importantly, the DOX-loaded HM-Bi@PEG–FA NSs hold an efficient in vitro/in vivo antitumor effect through the synergistic chemo-photothermal therapy. Therefore, our findings provide the possibility of designing a dual-stimuli-responsive hollow mesoporous Bi-based photothermal nanocarrier for synergistically enhanced antitumor therapy.

Simultaneous Determination of Purines and Uric Acid in Chinese Chicken Broth Using TFA/FA Hydrolysis Coupled with HPLC-VWD

Manli Wu,Wangang Zhang,Xixi Shen,Wei Wang

Chinese chicken broth is well known for its outstanding nutritional value and flavor, widely consumed in China. This study was designed to develop a sensitive and accurate high-performance liquid chromatography-variable wavelength detector (HPLC-VWD) method to simultaneously determine purines and uric acid in Chinese chicken broth for gout and hyperuricemia dietary management. Chromatographic separation was performed on an Agilent TC-C18 (2) column (4.6 mm × 250 mm, 5.0 µm), using 0.02 M KH2PO4(pH 4.0) as a mobile phase. Sample pretreatment was optimized to enable the extraction of all analytes from Chinese chicken broth. The optimal pretreatment conditions were chicken broth-60% trifluoroacetic acid (TFA)/20% formic acid (FA) (1:1,v/v) in a volume ratio of 1:3 and hydrolysis for 40 min at 85 °C in a water bath. The limits of detection (LODs) and limits of quantification (LOQs) of the purines and uric acid were 0.58–1.71 µg/L and 1.92–5.70 µg/L, respectively. The recoveries were 91–101%, with the relative standard deviations (RSDs) lower than 3%. The complete method has been successfully applied to determine purines and uric acid in various Chinese chicken soups obtained from different provinces in China. Keywords:Chinese chicken broth;purine;uric acid;HPLC;acid hydrolysis;hyperuricemia;gout

Regulation of micropatterned curvature-dependent FA heterogeneity on cytoskeleton tension and nuclear DNA synthesis of malignant breast cancer cells

Yongtao Wang,Nana Wang,Yazhou Chen,Yingjun Yang

Breast cancer is considered as a worldwide disease due to its high incidence and malignant metastasis. Although numerous techniques have been developed well to conduct breast cancer therapy, the influence of micropattern-induced interfacial heterogeneity on the molecular mechanism and nuclear signalling transduction of carcinogenesis is rarely announced. In this study, PDMS stencil-assisted micropatterns were fabricated on tissue culture plates to manage cell clustering colony by adjusting initial cell seeding density and the size of microholes. The curvature of each microholes was controlled to construct the interfacial heterogeneity of MDA-MB231 cancer cells at the periphery of micropatterned colony. The distinguished focal adhesion (FA) and cytoskeleton distribution at the central and peripheral regions of the cell colony were regulated by heterogeneous properties. The interfacial heterogeneity of FA and cytoskeleton would induce the biased tension force to encourage more ezrin expression at the periphery and further promote DNA synthesis, therefore disclosing a stem-like phenotype in heterogeneous cells. This study will provide a value source of information for the development of micropattern-induced heterogeneity and the interpretation of metastatic mechanism in malignant breast cancer cells.

Role of carbon fiber in the electrothermal behavior and geopolymerization process of carbon fiber-reinforced FA-GBFS geopolymer composite

Gonghui Gu,Yaowen Pei,Tao Ma,Feng Chen,Jinglin Zhang,Fang Xu

Carbon fiber-reinforced geopolymer composite (CFGC) can be used as the energy conversion layer of airport pavement, thus converting electromagnetic energy into heat energy via induction heating technology to melt snow and ice on pavement surface. In this study, fly ash (FA), granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) and carbon fibers were used to prepare carbon fiber-reinforced FA-GBFS geopolymer composite (CFFGC). Then, the modification mechanism of carbon fibers on the electrothermal and mechanical properties of CFFGC was studied, in which important effects arising from the geopolymerization process within CFFGC were focused on. Results show that the gullies on carbon fiber surface can provide nucleation sites for the geopolymerization and calcium silicate hydration reaction in CFFGC, which accelerates the precipitation of reactive Si(OH) 4 and [Al(OH) 4 ] - in the raw materials and promotes the generation of geopolymer gels and C S H gels, thus enhancing the mechanical performance of CFFGC. In addition, when the carbon fiber dosage reaches 0.4 wt%, a substantial conductive network is formed inside CFFGC, which shortens the conductive path and greatly improves the charge transfer capability in CFFGC. Once the carbon fiber dosage exceeds 0.4 wt%, the agglomerated carbon fibers within CFFGC can intensify the phonon scattering, thus reducing its thermal conductivity.

A Hypoxia-Sensitive Drug Delivery System Constructed by Nitroimidazole and its Application in the Treatment of Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Meng Tingting,Li Yinghong,Tian Ying,Ma Mingxing,Shi Kequan,Shang Xuwei,Yuan Hong,Hu Fuqiang

Hypoxia is an important pathological phenomenon, and it can induce many tumor microenvironment changes, such as accumulations of intracellular lactic acid, decrease of tumor microenvironment pH value, and regulate a series of physiological and pathological processes such as adhesion, metastasis, and immune escape. Hypoxic tumor cells act as a key target for treating tumor. In this research, we designed and prepared PEG-nitroimidazole grafts, PEG-NI, and FA-PEG-NI. We first explored their physical and chemical properties to serve as a drug carrier. Then, the hypoxia-sensitive properties such as particle size changes and drug release were investigated. Finally, the tumor targeting ability was studied in vitro and in vivo , and anti-tumor capacity was determined. Both grafts showed excellent property as a nanodrug carrier and showed favorable drug encapsulation ability of sorafenib with the help of the hydrophobic chain of 6-(BOC-amino) hexyl bromide. The micelles responded to the hypoxic tumor environment with chemical and spatial structure changes leading to sensitive and fast drug release. With the modification of folic acid, FA-PEG-NI gained tumor targeting ability in vivo . FA-PEG-NI graft proved a potential targeting drug delivery system in the treatment of hypoxic hepatocellular carcinoma. Graphical Abstract

Effect of mesoporous FA-SiO2 extracted from fly ash on the structural and photocatalytic properties of g-C3N4-based materials

Li Xianhua,Yu Qingbo

To explore high value-added utilization pathways of fly ash, the mesoporous structure of silicon dioxide extracted from fly ash (FA-SiO 2 ) was utilized to restrict the dicyandiamide (DCDA) thermal degradation process. This produced chemically bonded interacting composite photocatalysts of FA-SiO 2 and graphitic-phase carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ). Compared with the spherical silicon dioxide prepared using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS-SiO 2 ), the mesoporous structure of FA-SiO 2 allowed DCDA to react in a smaller space, which facilitated the transformation of DCDA to melamine by the thermal degradation kinetics of FA-SiO 2 /DCDA. This ultimately boosted the formation of an N-atom-removed triazine ring structure and a multistage structure combining lumps and rods in the composite photocatalysts of g-C 3 N 4 and FA-SiO 2 , which led to a higher visible-light utilization efficiency, a suitable valence-band position, and the photocatalytic activity for methylene blue reaching 3.56 times that of g-C 3 N 4 . The findings indicate that mesoporous FA-SiO 2 has the potential to improve the structural and photocatalytic properties of g-C 3 N 4 -based materials.

A Flavor blending method based on the linear hypothesis algorithm with FA-TOPSIS: A case study on green tea taste

Dingding Chen,Chenxi Ge,Yiyi Zhang,Lin Wang,Li Zhu,Gensheng Chen,Junfeng Yin,Yingbin Zhang

An intelligence model using a linear hypothesis algorithm was created to calculate the blending proportions of granular green tea sourced from Zhejiang, China. Using quantitative sensory and chemical indicators, two similarity coefficients ( and ) were derived through the Factor Analysis-Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (FA-TOPSIS) to screen appropriate candidate samples and determine the final blending proportions as comprehensive evaluation criteria. ranked the top five appropriate samples for blending, and identified the optimal blending proportions. Blending model solution was obtained using the Monte Carlo method, while integer programming was applied as a model constraint. The blending proportions, as determined by quantitative sensory indicators, resulted in the highest values. The result of quantitative descriptive analysis (QDA) validated that the blended samples closely replicated the target's taste profile. The present study investigates the blending of green tea taste, employing linear hypothesis algorithms with FA-TOPSIS to innovatively establish a digital indicator-based intelligent blending approach. This methodology is also applicable to flavor blending for other tea varieties.

Design of Janus-like PMMA-PEG-FA grafted fluorescent carbon dots and their nanoassemblies for leakage-free tumor theranostic application

Mingliang Pei,Xu Jia,Peng Liu

Theranostic nanomedicines for imaging guided therapy, simultaneously monitoring the real-time response of therapy, have aroused great interest in cancer research. Here, the Janus-like poly(methyl methacrylate)- b -poly(ethylene glycol)-folic acid block -copolymer-grafted fluorescent carbon dots (CDs-PMMA-PEG-FA) were synthesized via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in ethanol with the modified carbon dots (CDs-Br) as initiator, followed by the PEGylation via click chemistry. Interestingly, they could self-assemble into blank nanoassemblies with hydrodynamic diameter of about 150 nm and Doxorubicin (DOX)-loaded nanoassemblies of about 270 nm with high DOX–loading capacity of 67.2%. The DOX-loaded nanoassemblies could release >80% of DOX at pH 5.0 within 36 h, while that at pH 7.4 was only 2%, demonstrating the excellent on-off behavior on pH stimuli. A possible mechanism was proposed to explore the drug release pathway in vitro. Enhanced anti-cancer efficacy of the CDs-PMMA-PEG-FA/DOX nanoassemblies with folate receptor (FR)-mediated targeting function than the free DOX was revealed by the MTT assays, while the bare CDs-PMMA-PEG-FA nanoassemblies possessed good cytocompatibility. The cellular uptake result showed that the proposed fluorescent theranostic nanomedicines could be effectively internalized into HepG2 cells and release DOX into the cell nuclei.

ROS-mediated liposomal dexamethasone: a new FA-targeted nanoformulation to combat rheumatoid arthritis via inhibiting iRhom2/TNF-α/BAFF pathways

Yanqin Song,Muhammad Ismail,Qi Shan,Jianing Zhao,Yanping Zhu,Leiming Zhang,Yuan Du,Longbing Ling

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune inflammatory disorder that has seriously affected human health worldwide and its current management requires more successful therapeutic approaches. The combination of nanomedicines and pathophysiology into one system may provide an alternative strategy for precise RA treatment. In this work, a practical ROS-mediated liposome, abbreviated as Dex@FA-ROS-Lips that comprised synthetic dimeric thioether lipids (di-S-PC) and a surface functionalized with folic acid (FA), was proposed for dexamethasone (Dex) delivery. Incorporation with thioether lipids and a FA segment significantly improved the triggered release and improved the triggered release of cytotoxic Dex as well as the active targeting of RA, altering its overall pharmacokinetics and safety profiles in vivo. As proof, the designed Dex@FA-ROS-Lips demonstrated effective internalization by LPS-activated Raw264.7 macrophages with FA receptor overexpression and released Dex at the inflammatory site due to the ROS-triggered disassembly. Intravenous injection of this Dex@FA-ROS-Lips into adjuvant-induced arthritis (AIA) mice led to its incremental accumulation in inflamed joint tissues and significantly alleviated the cartilage destruction and joint swelling via suppression of proinflammatory cytokines (iRhom2, TNF-α and BAFF), as compared to the effect of commercial free Dex. Importantly, the Dex@FA-ROS-Lips nanoformulation showed better hemocompatibility with less adverse effects on the body weight and immune organ index of AIA mice. The anti-inflammatory mechanism of Dex@FA-ROS-Lips was further studied and it was found that it is possibly associated with the down-regulation of iRhom2 and the activation of the TNF-α/BAFF signaling pathway. Therefore, the integration of nanomedicines and the RA microenvironment using multifunctional Dex@FA-ROS-Lips shall be a novel RA treatment modality with full clinical potential, and based on the enhanced therapeutic effect, the signaling pathway of iRhom2/TNF-α/BAFF reasonably explained the mechanism of Dex@FA-ROS-Lips in anti-RA, which suggested a molecular target for RA therapy and other inflammatory diseases.

WO3-x@Ferrocene-Folic Acid Composites Induce Cancer Cell Death and Activate Immunity via PTT/CDT

Qi Wu,Mingyang Liu,Hui Zhang,Guanghao Li,Ziqing Yang,Xiaodan Wu,Guanghui Tan,Chenfeng Ji,Yingxue Jin

At present, tumor immune escape is a major problem in the treatment of tumors. The complex network of tumor microenvironments significantly impairs the efficacy of immunotherapy. This paper reports the preparation and immunoantitumor activity of a novel multifunctional defect tungsten trioxide@ferrocene-folic acid composite (WO 3-x @Fe-FA) with a high Fenton reaction rate. Ferrocene is modified on the surface of defective trioxide by the covalent coupling method for the first time, and the reaction rate of Fenton is increased by 10 times. WO 3-x @Fe-FA induces immunogenic cell death (ICD) through the powerful synergistic anti-tumor effect of PTT/CDT and decomposes H 2 O 2 to produce oxygen through the Fenton reaction, thus down-regulating the expression of immune checkpoint PD-L1 induced by tumor hypoxia. In vitro and in vivo experiments proved that WO 3-x @Fe-FA reverses the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment, transforms the immunosuppressive “cold tumor” into the immune “hot tumor”, and activates the immune activity of the system. In vitro and in vivo experiments show that WO 3-x @Fe-FA has excellent immunoantitumor activity, and it is expected to be a candidate drug for immunoantitumor therapy.
