Curcumin-encapsulated hydrophilic gelatin nanoparticle to stabilize fish oil-loaded Pickering emulsion

Guangyi Kan,Ye Zi,Li Li,Huan Gong,Jiawei Peng,Xichang Wang,Jian Zhong

Herein, pH-cycle method was explored to prepare curcumin-encapsulated hydrophilic bovine bone gelatin (BBG/Cur) nanoparticle and then the obtained nanoparticle was applied to stabilize fish oil-loaded Pickering emulsion. The nanoparticle had a high encapsulation efficiency (93.9 ± 0.5 %) and loading capacity (9.4 ± 0.1 %) for curcumin. The nanoparticle-stabilized emulsion had higher emulsifying activity index (25.1 ± 0.9 m 2 /g) and lower emulsifying stability index (161.5 ± 18.8 min) than BBG-stabilized emulsion. The pH affected the initial droplet sizes and creaming index values of the Pickering emulsions: pH 11.0 < pH 5.0 ≈ pH 7.0 ≈ pH 9.0 < pH 3.0. Curcumin provided obvious antioxidant effect for the emulsions, which was also dependent on pH. The work suggested pH-cycle method could be used to prepare hydrophobic antioxidant-encapsulated hydrophilic protein nanoparticle. It also provided basic information on the development of protein nanoparticles for Pickering emulsion stabilization.

A multi-stimulus-responsive bionic fish microrobot for remote intelligent control applications

Wenguang Yang,Xiaowen Wang,Zhen Wang,Zheng Yuan,Zhixing Ge,Haibo Yu

In nature, all creatures have their unique characteristics that allow them to adapt to the complex and changeable living environments. In recent years, bionic fish has received increased attention from the research community, and many fish-like microrobots driven by the Marangoni effect have been developed. They are generally characterized by easy operation and rapid driving. However, traditional fish-like microrobots can only be driven by a single stimulus and move on two-dimensional (2D) gas–liquid interfaces, which greatly limits their ability in obstacle avoidance and transportation. In this article, we propose a multi-stimulus-responsive bionic fish microrobot, which is made of temperature-responsive hydrogel poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM). This microrobot is impregnated with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and Fe3O4 and therefore has magnetic and photothermal conversion properties. Under the action of optical, magnetic or ethanol molecules, the microrobot can perform complex programmable translational motion on 2D surfaces and controllable rising and sinking, while realizing motion simulation and obstacle avoidance. The microrobot is expected to be used for a wide range of applications in intelligent control systems.

Green fabrication of lignin nanoparticles/chitosan films for refrigerated fish preservation application

Wei Zhang,Pei Gao,Qixing Jiang,Wenshui Xia

Maximizing the waste valorization of renewable resources to develop biocomposite materials is highly desirable regarding environmental sustainability and food chain security. Herein, lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) obtained using deep eutectic solvent (DES) by anti-solvent strategy were employed as nanofillers in the chitosan matrix to fabricate novel bioactive packaging films. The results showed that adding LNPs reduced the swelling degree and water vapor transmittance of chitosan films. Upon introduction of LNPs content, the tensile strength of the composite films significantly increased by about 40%, whereas the elongation at break showed an opposite trend. When the content of LNPs was 10 wt %, the UV shielding and free radical scavenging ability of the composite films reached the maximum point. However, the diameter of the inhibition zone only increased at the addition of 1 wt%. Furthermore, the refrigerated (4 ± 1 °C) grass fish wrapped with composite films revealed better quality and the shelf life was extended to 10 days. Therefore, nanocomposite films provide an attractive and promising pathway for high value-added commercial utilization of lignin and chitosan for food packaging applications.

Microwave processing technology influences the functional and structural properties of fish gelatin

Xinzi Kang,Wenwen Guo,Keying Ding,Shengnan Zhan,Qiaoming Lou,Tao Huang

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of microwave processing technology (MPT, 240–800 W, 1 and 4 min) on the functional and structural properties of fish gelatin (FG). It showed that MPT could increase gel strength and texture properties of FG, especially for 240 W. MPT greatly increased emulsifying activity index (EAI) of FG, but decreased its emulsion stability index (ESI). Rheology results showed that MPT increased viscosity of FG, but decreased gelation times. Intrinsic fluorescence and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy results indicated that MPT could unfold gelatin, contributing to the formation of H-bonds. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed that low power and short time of MPT-treated gelatin gels had much more dense and less voids. This work provided guidance for the applications of MPT to improve the functional properties of FG, and the results show that MPT-treated FG can replace mammalian gelatin and meet the religious requirement.

Manta Ray Inspired Soft Robot Fish with Tough Hydrogels as Structural Elements

Chuan Wei Zhang,Weifeng Zou,Hai Chao Yu,Xing Peng Hao,Guorui Li,Tiefeng Li,Wei Yang,Zi Liang Wu,Qiang Zheng

The design of soft robots capable of navigation underwater has received tremendous research interest due to the robots’ versatile applications in marine explorations. Inspired by marine animals such as jellyfish, scientists have developed various soft robotic fishes by using elastomers as the major material. However, elastomers have a hydrophobic network without embedded water, which is different from the gel-state body of the prototypes and results in high contrast to the surrounding environment and thus poor acoustic stealth. Here, we demonstrate a manta ray-inspired soft robot fish with tailored swimming motions by using tough and stiff hydrogels as the structural elements, as well as a dielectric elastomer as the actuating unit. The switching between actuated and relaxed states of this unit under wired power leads to the flapping of the pectoral fins and swimming of the gel fish. This robot fish has good stability and swims with a fast speed (∼10 cm/s) in freshwater and seawater over a wide temperature range (4–50 °C). The high water content (i.e., ∼70 wt %) of the robot fish affords good optical and acoustic stealth properties under water. The excellent mechanical properties of the gels also enable easy integration of other functional units/systems with the robot fish. As proof-of-concept examples, a temperature sensing system and a soft gripper are assembled, allowing the robot fish to monitor the local temperature, raise warning signals by lighting, and grab and transport an object on demand. Such a robot fish should find applications in environmental detection and execution tasks under water. This work should also be informative for the design of other soft actuators and robots with tough hydrogels as the building blocks.

Collagen Membrane Derived from Fish Scales for Application in Bone Tissue Engineering

Liang Chen,Guoping Cheng,Shu Meng,Yi Ding

Guided tissue/bone regeneration (GTR/GBR) is currently the main treatment for alveolar bone regeneration. The commonly used barrier membranes in GTR/GBR are collagen membranes from mammals such as porcine or cattle. Fish collagen is being explored as a potential substitute for mammalian collagen due to its low cost, no zoonotic risk, and lack of religious constraints. Fish scale is a multi-layer natural collagen composite with high mechanical strength, but its biomedical application is limited due to the low denaturation temperature of fish collagen. In this study, a fish scale collagen membrane with a high denaturation temperature of 79.5 °C was prepared using an improved method based on preserving the basic shape of fish scales. The fish scale collagen membrane was mainly composed of type I collagen and hydroxyapatite, in which the weight ratios of water, organic matter, and inorganic matter were 20.7%, 56.9%, and 22.4%, respectively. Compared to the Bio-Gide®membrane (BG) commonly used in the GTR/GBR, fish scale collagen membrane showed good cytocompatibility and could promote late osteogenic differentiation of cells. In conclusion, the collagen membrane prepared from fish scales had good thermal stability, cytocompatibility, and osteogenic activity, which showed potential for bone tissue engineering applications. Keywords:fish scale;collagen;hydroxyapatite;bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells;osteogenic differentiation

Fish-scale nickel mesh with switchable wettability for efficient oil/water separation

Jia-Hui Xu,Xi Yan,Yan Chen,Xiao-Jing Guo,Wan-Zhong Lang

In the daily life of human beings, sewage discharge and oil spill accidents occur from time to time. New types of controllable oil/water separation interface materials have received more attention. In this study, we proposed a simple and environmentally friendly method to prepare a Nickel filter with switchable wettability . The final product is prepared by high temperature calcination and soaked with stearic acid ethanol solution. The prepared filter screen has selective separation performance for oil/water mixture with switchable surface wettability between superhydrophobic and superhydrophilic. The separation efficiency is higher than 99.50%, and the flux rate is as high as 46.25 L m −2 s −1 for water-removing process and 40.22 L m −2 s −1 for oil-removing process. The wettability conversion of the membrane can be achieved through heating treatment and soaking treatment, and it still has good oil/water separation performance. After 20 times of cycles, the separation efficiency remains unchanged, and the flux remain above 40.06 L m −2 s −1 for oil removal and 36.81 L m −2 s −1 for water removal process. The results show that the prepared nickel filter screen has good practical application prospects such as water reclamation and oil spill treatment.

Azoxystrobin increases the infection of spring viraemia of carp virus in fish

Lei Liu,Huan Wang,Meng Xu,Tian-Xiu Qiu,Jiong Chen

Azoxystrobin (AZ) has entered aquatic ecosystems and produced serious damages to fish associated with potentially increasing the susceptibility to pathogens . This study characterized the defense abilities of fish by exposed to AZ on challenging with the infection of spring viraemia of carp virus (SVCV). The results showed that SVCV replication increased significantly in EPC cells and zebrafish that were exposed to up to 50 μg/L of AZ at 3, 5, 7, and 14 d. Intracellular biochemical assays indicated that AZ at 5 and 50 μg/L inhibited the activation of Nrf2-ARE pathway including a decrease in Nrf2 expression, Nrf2 phosphorylation, HO-1 content, and three antioxidant activities. While no significant difference in ERK1/2 and JNK MAPKs in zebrafish was observed, P38 phosphorylation was significantly decreased at 7 and 14 d, and the changes in MAPKs were more evident in EPC cells previously exposed to AZ at 7 d. These results revealed that AZ initially induced low phosphorylation of MAPKs, triggering the attenuation of Nrf2 phosphorylation to weaken Nrf2 translocation into the nucleus in a longer exposure period (more than 5 d). The data in the cells and fish also showed that antioxidant activities were decreased to some extent at 5–7 d for the cells and 7–14 d for the fish. Furthermore, interferon-related factors were decreased in AZ-exposed zebrafish, explaining the reason that fish can't resist the virus infection. Overall, the present study provided a new adverse threat of AZ by amplifying the viral outbreak to endanger ecological safety in aquatic environment.

Fish-inspired anti-icing hydrogel sensors with low-temperature adhesion and toughness

Jiajun Xu,Rining Jing,Xiuyan Ren,Guanghui Gao

Breaking through the conventional way of conferring anti-icing ability on hydrogels with addition of organic solvents or inorganic salts, here a novel anti-icing hydrogel with toughness, adhesiveness and high transparency was successfully fabricated by introducing antifreeze protein (AFPS, inspired by fish) into a chemical crosslinking network copolymerized with acrylamide and 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid. The hydrogel exhibited surprising stretchability (up to 2400% tensile strain), high transparency (over 90% transmittance) and outstanding reversible adhesive performance bonding to different materials and even human skin. Meanwhile, the inhibition of ice crystal growth based on AFPS molecules also conferred anti-icing ability on the hydrogels, so that the toughness and adhesiveness of the hydrogels remained stable at −10 °C. Additionally, the existence of sulfonic groups also endowed the hydrogels with deformation sensitivity to act as strain or pressure sensors to accurately monitor human motions and even subtle physiological signals. Therefore, the novel anti-icing strategy would provide new insight for a new generation of hydrogel sensors.

Microplastic pollution characteristic in surface water and freshwater fish of Gehu Lake, China

Xu Xia,Zhang Ling,Xue Yingang,Gao Yu,Wang Liping,Peng Mingguo,Jiang Shanqing,Zhang Qiuya

Much more attention has been poured into microplastic pollution in freshwater systems recently. In the present study, the pollution of microplastics (MPs) in surface water and freshwater fish (crucian carp, etc.) were investigated from Gehu Lake, which is the second largest lake in southern Jiangsu after Taihu Lake. The result manifested that the average abundance of MPs was respectively 6.33±2.67 n/L for surface water and 10.7 items per individual for freshwater fish. The distribution of MPs in Gehu Lake varied from place to place, with the highest abundance of MPs was observed in the two estuaries of the eastern part of the lake. It was speculated that topographical factors and human factors were the main factors affecting the abundance and distribution of MPs. Transparent fibers were the main type of MPs in water samples, accounting for 69.70% of all detected particles. Meanwhile, most of the MPs ingested by freshwater fish were fibers, and the main colors were transparent and blue. In addition, the dominant size of the MPs was between 0.1 to 0.5 mm in water and fish samples. Moreover, PES, man-made fiber, and PP were the dominant polymer types in the surface water and fish samples. The results of this investigation can provide basic data for the research and management of MPs in freshwater systems.

Frabrication of carboxymethylchitin nanofibers and fish gelatin hybrid gels with robust gel performance

Rongqiang Chen,Shuai Zhang,Jiao Jiao Sun,Lijuan Xu,Yuan Duan,Fengchen Li,Yanhui Han,Xiao Fu,Meng Wang,Yong Hong Meng,Yurong Guo

Compared to animal gelatin, the application of fish gelatin (FG) in the food industry is limited due to its lower gel hardness, gelation temperature, and melting temperature. To address these issues, we developed hybrid gels using carboxymethyl chitin nanofibers (CMC-NFs) with FG to enhance its gel properties. The chitin was carboxymethylated by monochloroacetic acid, increasing the negative potential from −6 mV to −35 mV. This modified chitin was then defibrillated into CMC-NFs through high-pressure homogenization to improve its water dispersibility. The addition of 0.1% CMC-NFs significantly increased the hardness of FG gels from 533 g to 989 g, which was notably higher than the ∼600 g hardness of porcine gelatin. Additionally, the gelation and melting temperatures of FG reached 17 °C and 32 °C, respectively, which are very close to the 20 °C and 35 °C of porcine gelatin. Mechanistic studies revealed that FG and CMC-NFs (0.1%) molecules formed a synergistic gel network, facilitated by hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions. This interaction significantly increased the α-helix content in the secondary structure of the FG protein from 15.26% to 21.18%, thereby enhancing the FG-dominated three-dimensional network structure with CMC-NF molecules. Increasing the concentration of CMC-NFs further elevated the gel's melting temperature while reducing its hardness due to phase separation. This study not only presents a viable method for enhancing the gelling properties of modified FG but also offers a feasible solution for expanding FG's applications in the food industry.

Fast Preparation of Fish Sauce Treated With Marine Protease-Producing Bacillus zhangzhouensis sp.

Niuniu Bai,Jianlin He,Bihong Hong,Zelong Wu,Liping Wang,Zongze Shao

Background: Traditional fish sauce is made from fish that have been coated in 30%–40% sea salt and fermented for up to 2 years. The preparation requires a long time, and the fish source contains considerable biogenic amines. In this report, by measuring the growth curve and identifying the intracellular enzyme and the activity of protease, B. zhangzhouensis with the highest activity of protease production was selected from eight strains, which were applied to the fermentation process of fish sauce. Results: Optimized by response surface methodology, the content of amino nitrogen was taken as the response value, and the best fermentation conditions were 4.15% inocula, pH 9.13, and 36.3°C. Under the optimized conditions, fish sauce samples were obtained by fermentation with B. zhangzhouensis for 15 h, 3 days, 7 days, 15 days, and 30 days, respectively. The contents of amino nitrogen, total nitrogen, biogenic amine, and various flavor substances were determined and compared with the traditional 2-year-fermented fish sauce. As a result, the 7-day-fermented fish sauce using B. zhangzhouensis had a similar composition of flavor substances to traditional fish sauce, but a much lower level of biogenic amines. Conclusion: The new method of preparing fish sauce with a fermentation condition of 4.15% B. zhangzhouensis , pH 9.13, and 36.3°C can improve the production efficiency of fish sauce, and the flavor is similar to that of traditional fish sauce.
