The traditional contact release active packaging film is easily restricted by the strict storage environment and designing a more intelligent release system to achieve lasting food preservation is still a challenge. Herein, a light-responsive thermal-controlled curcumin release packaging film was fabricated by integrating chitosan with Cu-MoO x and curcumin (CS/CMC). The addition of filler did not destroy the crystal structure and thermal stability of the chitosan matrix. CS/CMC film also possessed satisfactory visual identifiability (ΔE* ≥ 14.98), good light transmittance (T 660 ≥ 79.99 %), enhanced mechanical properties (≥ 48.21 MPa), and excellent barrier performance against ultraviolet light (T 280 ≤ 29.2 %), and water vapor (≤ 0.74 × 10 −10 g m −1 s −1 Pa −1 ). Additionally, CS/CMC film obtained superior photothermal performance from Cu-MoO x and exhibited good photothermal stability. Benefiting from the photothermal activity, CS/CMC film realizes the intelligent and controllable release of curcumin. The released curcumin and photothermal showed synergistic antibacterial ability with an antibacterial rate of 99.33 % for E. coli and 99.23 % for S. aureus based on CS/CMC 0.02 under near infrared (NIR) irradiation. Besides, CS/CMC 0.02 film could also efficiently inhibit P. italicum and P. expansum under NIR irradiation. Tangerine treated with CS/CMC 0.02 + NIR exhibited a longer shelf life and less nutrient loss than polyethylene (PE) film, verifying the good potential of CS/CMC 0.02 as packaging film. Our release active packaging film based on photothermal agent provides a new insight to designing contactless intelligent active packaging.

The stimuli-responsive active packaging materials have attracted large attention while using a simple method to prepare stimuli-responsive active packaging materials remains a challenge. Herein, humidity-responsive core-shell poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL)-citral nanofiber film was successfully prepared via simple emulsion electrospinning. The active substance citral was encapsulated in the core of the PVA/PCL-citral nanofiber. The controllable release of citral from the core-shell PVA/PCL-citral nanofiber film was achieved by changing the microenvironment's humidity due to the PVA shell's swelling in high humidity. The PVA/PCL-citral nanofiber film exhibited excellent antioxidant capacity with an ABTS free radical scavenging percentage of 88%. The nanofiber film also inhibited Escherichia coli (ATCC 29213) and Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25922) with antimicrobial rates of 99.99% and 99.98%, respectively. A study on the biocompatible nanofiber film as packaging material was conducted on apricots, and the shelf life of apricots was extended to 9 days. Therefore, the humidity-responsive PVA/PCL-citral nanofiber film fabricated in this study has good application potential in antioxidant and antimicrobial packaging.

The global cold chain consumes vast amounts of energy and emits greenhouse gases, while many regions lack proper refrigeration. To address this, we developed a dual-layer electrospun membrane (PZ-PML) for energy-free fruit preservation. The top PVDF-HFP/ZIF-8 layer offers 97.64% solar reflectance and 92.5% mid-infrared emissivity, providing 70 W/m 2 radiative cooling. The bottom PAN/MIL-101/LiCl layer, with 2.18 g/g water uptake at 80% RH, delivers ∼156 W/m 2 evaporative cooling, lowering surface temperature by 6.1 °C under ∼400 W/m 2 irradiation. The membrane also shows ⩾99% antibacterial efficiency against E. coli and S. aureus . Applied to strawberries, it reduced dehydration to 20.2% after 9 days, compared to 68.2% and 74.4% in controls. Additionally, it demonstrates durability, superhydrophobicity, and UV stability. This scalable solution offers energy-free fruit cooling, reducing postharvest losses while maintaining quality and safety.

SUMMARY Fruits constitute a vital component of a nutritious diet but are highly perishable, contributing substantially to food waste. Consequently, identifying safe and edible biological agents to enhance product quality and extend shelf life is of critical importance. In this study, we demonstrate that exogenous pre-harvest foliar application with nanoselenium (nano-Se) in tomato enhances fruit quality, prolongs fruit shelf life, and enhances the resistance of tomato fruit to Botrytis cinerea infection. Transcriptomic analysis revealed coordinated upregulation of genes associated with quality maintenance and modulation of phytohormone-related pathways. Notably, nano-Se treatment induced expression patterns of ripening-related genes that resembled those triggered by ethylene (ET) but were antagonistic to the effects of 1-MCP. We further demonstrated that although SlMYC2 knockout increased susceptibility to B. cinerea , nano-Se application restored resistance in a manner independent of the SlMYC2-associated jasmonic acid signaling pathway, implicating ET as the primary regulatory mechanism. Collectively, these findings support nano-Se as a promising biostimulant for reducing post-harvest losses while preserving the nutritional and sensory quality of tomato fruits.

The development of highly sensitive and versatile flexible pressure sensors presents significant potential for advancing precision in human-computer interaction systems, particularly in addressing challenges associated with discriminating objects possessing nearly identical visual characteristics. In this work, we fabricated a hierarchical microstructure-enhanced flexible capacitive pressure sensor through synergistic integration of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), and laser-induced graphene (LIG). A sandpaper-assisted electrospinning technique was employed to create the dielectric layer consisting of PDMS@PVP nanofiber membrane (NM) with irregular concave microstructures, while porous LIG electrodes were precisely patterned onto PVP NMs using screen-printing technology. The incorporation of PDMS effectively enhanced interfacial adhesion and structural plasticity of PVP NM, while the sandpaper-templated concave microstructures in the NM dielectric layer substantially improved sensor sensitivity, particularly in medium-high pressure regimes. The optimized sensor demonstrates exceptional performance metrics including: remarkable sensitivity (0.338 kPa −1 in 0–1 kPa range), broad detection range (0–200 kPa), ultrafast response/recovery times (31/41 ms), ultralow detection limit (2.9 Pa), and outstanding durability (>3000 cycles). Capitalizing on these advancements, the sensor was successfully integrated into a robotic manipulator system, and a fruit identification system was developed, incorporating an embedded system with artificial intelligence algorithms. This integrated system achieves dual discrimination capabilities: distinguishing fruits with nearly identical size/weight characteristics (95.83 % accuracy) and identifying ripeness stages of individual fruits (100 % accuracy). This study establishes a robust technological strategy to overcome tactile recognition limitations for visually indistinguishable objects, demonstrating transformative potential for intelligent human-machine interface applications.

Every year, a significant amount of fruit and vegetable spoilage caused by microbial contamination leads to substantial food waste and economic losses in the agricultural and food sectors. There is an urgent need to develop highly efficient and safe multifunctional preservation materials. Curcumin (Cur) is known for its excellent antioxidant and antibacterial properties; however, its poor water solubility and low bioavailability severely limit its practical applications. In this study, we synthesized highly stable and water-dispersible metal-biomolecule network nanoparticles by self-assembly of ferrous ions (Fe 2+ ) with DNA in an aqueous solution at room temperature. Furthermore, by leveraging the strong coordination interaction between Iron(Fe) and Cur, we prepared Cur-modified nanoparticles (Fe-DNA-Cur) with dual antioxidant and antibacterial functions. Fe-DNA-Cur not only preserves the biological activity of curcumin, but also effectively addresses its inherent poor water solubility. After further compounding with chitosan (CS), the as-prepared Fe-DNA-Cur@CS composite demonstrates breakthrough antimicrobial performance, thereby providing an innovative solution for developing novel, highly effective and safe fruit/vegetable preservatives. When used as a sustainable food packaging coating for perishable fruits at room temperature, the Fe-DNA-Cur@CS coating can reduce dehydration, prevent nutrient loss, inhibit microbial growth, increase nutraceutical value, maintain strawberry quality, and extend shelf life during storage. This study demonstrates the potential of Fe-DNA-Cur@CS as a multifunctional coating material to reduce food waste and agricultural economic losses caused by microbial contamination.

Introduction Soil serves as a critical habitat for plant growth, harboring diverse microbial communities that profoundly influence soil quality, plant health, and fruit quality. This work aimed to evaluate the potential of microbial inoculants application at varying doses on improving soil health, enhance plant stress resistance, and promote fruit quality. Methods Rhizosphere microbial communities across five treatment groups—CK (no inoculant), T1 (45 L/ha), T2 (90 L/ha), T3 (135 L/ha), and T4 (180 L/ha)—were analyzed using high-throughput sequencing on the Illumina NextSeq platform. Concurrently, soil physicochemical properties from the rhizosphere, alongside physiological and biochemical parameters of grape leaves and fruit quality indicators, were measured for all treatments. Results The results indicated that inoculant application significantly increased the relative abundance of bacterial phyla Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria, along with the genera Bacillus, Nitrospira , and Pseudomonas . Concurrently, a decrease in the relative abundance of fungi from the phylum Ascomycota (e.g., Penicillium, Fusarium ) was observed, whereas an increase was noted for phyla Mortierellomycota and Basidiomycota, and genera such as Mortierella and Solicoccozyma . Furthermore, microbial inoculant applications (T1–T4) led to significant changes in soil parameters (e.g., nutrient availability and enzyme activity), plant physiological indicators (e.g., antioxidant enzyme activity), and fruit quality metrics (e.g., soluble sugars and vitamin C content). The most pronounced changes were observed under the T2 treatment (90 L/ha), whereas higher doses (T3–T4) resulted in diminished responses together with increased costs, indicating a clear dose-dependent effect. Conclusion In summary, the application of compound microbial inoculants, particularly at optimized doses, was associated with shifts in rhizosphere microbial community structure and improvements in soil–plant system metrics, suggesting the potential to contribute to sustainable agricultural management.

Food packaging systems with a single function of freshness keeping or monitoring may not be able to meet all practical needs. Herein, cellulose nanofibers (CNF)-based labels with dual functions of fruit freshness keeping and visual monitoring were prepared by coaxial 3D printing . CNF-based ink with blueberry anthocyanin was used to create the shell of fibers, exhibiting high formability and print fidelity as well as sensitive visual pH-responsiveness for freshness monitoring. Chitosan containing 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) was loaded into the hollow microchannels of fibers, in which 1-MCP was trapped by the electrostatic effect of chitosan and CNF and exhibited a sustained release behavior. The 3D printed labels prolonged the shelf life of litchis for 6 days, meanwhile, they sensitively indicated the changes in freshness and the accuracy was confirmed by Headspace-Gas Chromatography-Ion Mobility Spectrometry. The CNF-based integrated labels developed in this work provided a new idea for the development of food intelligent packaging.

The fruit of Lycium barbarum (Lb), known as red goji berry, is a “superfruit” due to its abundance of bioactive compounds. Among these compounds, dicaffeoylspermidine derivatives (DCSPDs) have anti-oxidant and anti-Alzheimer’s Disease activity. This study employed ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry to investigate metabolic changes during the development and ripening stages of red goji berries. Totally 97 compounds, including 51 DCSPDs, were tentatively identified. Correlation analysis of these DCSPDs revealed that glycosyltransferases (GTs) play an important role in the formation of glycosylated DCSPDs. In vitro experiments characterized 3 novel GTs could add a glucosyl moiety to N 1 -caffeoyl- N 10 -dihydrocaffeoyl spermidine. Homologous GTs from L. ruthenicum (Lr) exhibited similar activity, despite the absence of abundant glycosylated DCSPDs in Lr. These findings provide insights into the metabolic changes and interconnections among active compounds in red goji berries. The identified GTs hold potential for metabolic engineering of DCSPDs and functional food development.

Fig fruit is widely accepted in warm and tropical regions due to the sweet taste and health benefits. The polysaccharides in fig fruit are responsible for the health benefits. However, information regarding polysaccharide structure remains limited. In this study, the water-soluble polysaccharides (FFP) were extracted from fig fruit with a yield of 15.3 mg/g. Anion exchange chromatography and gel permeation chromatography were used for purification. A leading polysaccharide was purified and characterized as below. The monosaccharide composition of FFP included arabinose (Ara), galactose (Gal), galacturonic acid (GalA) and rhamnose (Rha). The glycosidic linkages were revealed to be L-Ara-(1→, →5)-L-Ara-(1→, →2,4)-L-Rha-(1→, →2)-L-Rha-(1→, →4)-D-Gal-(1→ and D-Gal-(1 → . Nuclear magnetic resonnance (NMR) spectra revealed that FFP had →4)-α-D-Gal p A-(1 → 2)-α-L-Rha p -(1 → as backbone. The side chains included Gal p -β-D-(1 → 4)-Gal p -β-D-(1 → 4)-Gal p -β-D-(1 → 4)-Gal p -β-D-(1→ and α-L-Ara f -(1 → 5)-α-L-Ara f -(1 → . They were linked to C-4 of Rha p . FFP inhibited the production of NO, IL-6 and IL-1β levels induced by LPS. IL-6 and IL-1β levels were returned to normal. These information are helpful to understand this functional fruit.

A third of all fruits are wasted at the agricultural and postharvest stages before reaching the consumer. This spoilage issue is particularly common for respiratory climactic fruit such as Passion fruit, as it possesses a very short shelf life due to dehydration and microbial growth, greatly limiting its storage, transportation and marketing. In order to solve the problem of fruit spoilage, this work developed a multifunctional biomass-derived conformal coating from quaternary ammonium based water-soluble chitosan (WSC) and tannic acid (TA). The coating material has excellent transparency, toughness, UV resistance, antibacterial ability, oxidation resistance and washability. The experiment showed that the coated passion fruit exhibited an apparent retardation effect in weight loss, shrinkage index, and firmness, prolonging the shelf life 7 days longer. These results suggest that the WSC/TA composite coating could effectively prevent oxygen oxidation and water loss, and delay fruit ripening, showing good potential in fruit preservation, especially in the preservation quality and economic benefits of passion fruit.

To better understand the function role of the melon CmLOX18 gene in the biosynthesis of C6 volatiles during fruit ripening, we biochemically characterized CmLOX18 and identified its subcellular localization in transgenic tomato plants. Heterologous expression in yeast cells showed that the molecular weight of the CmLOX18 protein was identical to that predicted, and that this enzyme possesseed lipoxygenase activity. Linoleic acid was demonstrated to be the preferred substrate for the purified recombinant CmLOX18 protein, which exhibited optimal catalytic activity at pH 4.5 and 30 °C. Chromatogram analysis of the reaction product indicated that the CmLOX18 protein exhibited positional specificity, as evidenced by its release of only a C-13 oxidized product. Subcellular localization analysis by transient expression in Arabidopsis protoplasts showed that CmLOX18 was localized to non-chloroplast organelles. When the CmLOX18 gene was transgenically expressed in tomato via Agrobacterium tumefaciens -mediated transformation, it was shown to enhance expression levels of the tomato hydroperoxide lyase gene LeHPL , whereas the expression levels of six TomLox genes were little changed. Furthermore, transgenic tomato fruits exhibited increases in the content of the C6 volatiles, namely hexanal, (Z)-3-hexanal, and (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, indicating that CmLOX18 probably plays an important role in the synthesis of C6 compounds in fruits.
