Fe, Mn co-supported SAPO-18 zeolite was synthesized via ion-exchange method and exhibited high performance in catalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO). The bimetallic Fe-Mn/SAPO-18 catalyst showed almost 100% MO (50 mg/L) removal within 20 min, which was superior to the MO degradation efficiency over monometallic Fe or Mn catalysts. The hydroxyl group (OH ) generated in the photo-Fenton catalysis was determined by fluorescence probe and the corresponding reaction mechanism was explored. We proposed that the light and synergistic effect of bimetal promote the conversion of metal ion valence, thereby enhancing the generation of the active species and the degradation efficiency of MO. Furthermore, the influences of some essential factors on MO degradation rate were investigated. The results indicated that the pH of the solution plays an important role in Fenton degradation of MO. 100% MO degradation is achieved within 10 min when the initial pH is set at 2–3 under UV for Fe-Mn/SAPO-18. Moreover, it also shows good performance under neutral conditions, thus exhibits considerable activity at expanded pH range. And the concentrations of H 2 O 2 and MO solution and the dosage of catalysts can influence the degradation rate of dyes. This work not only made significant progress on the development of high-performance catalysts for the degradation of MO, but also provided a direction for the study of organic contaminant degradation.

In this work, the FeO x /MnO y decorated oxidized carbon nanotubes (CNTs-Fe-Mn) composites were synthesized and used as catalysts to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for organic pollutants degradation. The catalytic ability of the CNTs-Fe-Mn catalyst was strongly correlated with the oxidation of CNTs and the molar ratio of Fe/Mn. When the CNTs was oxidized by 30 wt% HNO 3 and the modified molar ratio of Fe/Mn was 0.5, the 30%-CNTs-Fe-Mn-0.5 showed highest efficiency for rhodamine B (RhB) degradation via activating PMS, and the removal rate of 95% was achieved in 60 min at room temperature in 15 mg L −1 RhB solution with catalyst dosage of 0.1 g L −1 . Fe and Mn multivalent oxide species coexisted were randomly distributed on the outer surface and encapsulated into the channels of oxidized CNTs in the 30%-CNTs-Fe-Mn-0.5 catalyst. The XPS results of catalysts before and after reaction proved that the redox cycles between the multivalent states of Fe and Mn ensured the superior catalytic activity of the 30%-CNTs-Fe-Mn-0.5 for PMS activation. The radical quenching tests and D 2 O experiments confirmed that SO 4 − , HO· and O 2 − radicals were the main reactive oxidized species for the oxidation of pollutants in the 30%-CNTs-Fe-Mn-0.5/PMS system. In addition, the influences of operation parameters including initial pH, pollutant concentration, catalyst dosage, and PMS dosage on catalytic degradation were investigated.

In this work, a facile one-pot two-step mechanochemical technology is firstly developed to prepare Fe/Mn-based binary hexacyanoferrates (Na x (FeMn)[Fe(CN) 6 ] y , FeMnHCF)/carbon composites by coupling in-situ construction of the conductive network and solid-state reaction. It is found that construction of hierarchical conductive network is favorable to improve the rate performance and cycling stability, with an 80.5% capacity retention over 1000 cycles at 360 mA/g. Furthermore, the capacity attenuation and stabilization mechanisms are investigated by GITT, EIS , and ex-situ XRD . The capacity attenuation in the early stage can be attributed to the large charge transfer resistance, while in the latter stage the long cycling stability is ascribed to the solid solution reaction with the mitigated stress distortion during the desodiation/sodiation process. Overall, the proposed mechanochemical synthesis of Fe/Mn-based binary hexacyanoferrate shows great potential in environmental friendliness and cost-saving production as well as comprehensive product performance.

A flexible self-supported Fe/Mn-CNF anode derived from MOFs was constructed. • Fe/Mn-CNFs-800 achieve superior electrocatalytic efficiency for TC degradation. • Fe/Mn-CNFs-800 exhibit strong flexibility, stability, and recyclability. • Graphitized Fe/Mn‑carbon interface enhances electron transfer and ROS generation. Electrocatalytic degradation of antibiotics remains limited by active site instability, poor electron transfer, and high energy consumption. Herein, we report a flexible, self-supported Fe/Mn‑carbon composite nanofibrous membrane (Fe/Mn-CNF) via electrospinning, two-step MOF growth, and controlled carbonization. By integrating a continuous conductive nanofiber network with a graphitized Fe/Mn heterointerface, this design enables uniform dispersion of bimetallic redox centers and enhanced interfacial electronic coupling. As a result, the Fe/Mn-CNF-800 electrode achieved 97.23% TC removal within 80 min (k = 0.046 min −1 ) and ultralow energy consumption (0.11 kWh·m −3 ), while maintaining over 88% efficiency after eight cycles. Radical quenching and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis revealed that 1 O 2 as the dominant reactive oxygen species (ROS), synergistically assisted •OH, O 2 • − , and ClO•. Density functional theory calculations further confirmed strong electronic coupling and substantial charge redistribution at the Fe/Mn‑carbon interface, enhancing both electronic conductivity and catalytic reactivity. High-performance liquid chromatography-mass analysis identified multistep TC degradation pathways, while toxicity assessment confirmed reduced toxicity after treatment. This work demonstrates a self-supported electrode with strong applicability to real water matrices, providing an efficient and low energy pathway for treating recalcitrant antibiotic pollutants. Metal oxides, as a popular group of ozonation catalyst, are usually synthesized with physiochemical protocols involving hazardous materials and extreme conditions. In this study, a biological method was studied with manganese oxidizing bacteria Pseudomonas sp. to synthesize multi-metal oxides consisting of iron, manganese, and cobalt (Bio-FeMnCoOx) to catalyze ozonation for the first time. It was found that the dosage of cobalt, the cultivation time, and the polishing methods could significantly impact the catalytic activities of degrading benzotriazole as a model. The second-order degrading kinetic constant with optimized Bio-FeMnCoOx was 4.8 times that with the physiochemically synthesized peer. The activity of Bio-FeMnCoOx was compared with other reported catalysts in terms of Rct value. The quenching tests and EPR spectra indicated the participation of hydroxyl radicals, superoxide radicals, and singlet oxygen. The study demonstrates the great potential of biosynthesis as a green protocol for preparing metal oxides to efficiently catalyze ozonation.

Heavy metal contamination, particularly by lead and cadmium, poses a significant environmental challenge. Indiscriminate disposal of crop residues exacerbates environmental concerns. In this study, broad bean straw was utilized to produce biochar (BC), and further modifications were made using FeCl 3 -6 H 2 O and KMnO 4 to obtain Iron-Manganese Modified Biochar (FMBC) for remediating cadmium and lead-contaminated soil. Results show that both BC and FMBC increased soil pH, available phosphorus, and potassium compared to the control groups. Adding 5 % BC led to a notable reduction of 60.98 % in available cadmium and 51.63 % in available lead. Simultaneously, FMBC decreased active cadmium and lead by 57.51–73.73 % and 52.25–69.87 %, respectively. Furthermore, FMBC decreased the content of cadmium and lead in the unstable state while increasing content in the residual state, demonstrating its ability to reduce accumulation in plant tissues. FMBC adsorption mechanisms primarily involve surface complexation and co-precipitation, where oxygen-containing functional groups form stable complexes with free cadmium and lead ions. In conclusion, FMBC proved to be an effective, environmentally friendly soil remediation agent with strong adsorption capabilities and a prolonged shelf-life. This provides a promising solution to alleviate the pollution of heavy metals such as cadmium and lead in soil.

A lot of nanomaterials are using T1-T2dual mode magnetic resonance (MR) contrast agents (CAs), but multilayer nanowire (NW) with iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) as T1-T2dual modal CAs has not been reported yet. Herein, we synthesized a Fe/Mn multilayer NW with an adjustable Fe layer, as T1-T2dual-mode CAs. The relaxation performance of Fe/Mn multilayer NW was studied at 1.5 T. Results show that, when the length of the Fe layer is about 10 nm and the Mn is about 5 nm, the r1value (21.8 mM−1s−1) and r2value (74.8 mM−1s−1) of the Fe/Mn multilayer NW are higher than that of Mn NW (3.7 mM−1s−1) and Fe NW (59.3 mM−1s−1), respectively. We predict that our Fe/Mn multilayer NW could be used as T1-T2dual mode MRI CAs in the near future. Keywords:dual modal;MRI;CAs;nanowire;relaxation

MOFs represent a promising platform for enzyme immobilization, yet the development of tailored strategies to accommodate both enzyme properties and MOF structures remains a challenge. In this study, we employed chitosanase BCC1 as a model enzyme and integrated Fe 2+ /Mn 2+ ions into the ZIF-8 to construct a bimetallic MOF-based immobilization system (BCC1@Fe/Mn-ZIF-8). Comprehensive characterization by SEM, FTIR, TGA confirmed the successful immobilization and structural integrity of the composite. The immobilized enzyme retained 97 % of its initial activity and exhibited enhanced stability under harsh thermal, pH, and solvent conditions. Notably, BCC1@Fe/Mn-ZIF-8 maintained 117 % activity after 14 days at 4 °C and 72 % residual activity after 14 reuse cycles, indicating excellent storage and reusability. This bimetallic MOF-based strategy offers a robust and efficient approach for enzyme immobilization, with strong potential in industrial biocatalysis.

With growing concerns over water pollution and depletion of freshwater resources, finding sustainable and cost-effective solutions for water treatment is crucial. This study introduces a novel MIL-53(Fe)/Mn-doped SrTiO3 (MIL-53(Fe)/Mn-STO) direct Z-scheme photocatalyst, designed to efficiently degrade organic contaminants in water. Specifically, the photocatalytic degradation of o-nitrophenol (ONP) was investigated under an Xe lamp. The MIL-53(Fe)/Mn-STO photocatalyst demonstrated a maximum removal efficiency of 97.75% within 90 min, with a rate constant (k) of 0.0374 min−1, outperforming the individual MIL-53(Fe) and Mn-STO photocatalysts. A comprehensive analysis of the material’s properties was conducted using Fourier transform Infrared spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and photoluminescence techniques, and the photocatalytic activity was evaluated under various conditions, including variations in pH, ONP concentration, catalyst dosage and the presence of inorganic anions. The improved photocatalytic activity of the MIL-53(Fe)/Mn-STO system can be ascribed to the synergistic interaction between its two components, which also contributed to its excellent recyclability over five cycles. These findings demonstrate that MIL-53(Fe)/Mn-STO is a highly effective and sustainable photocatalyst with a strong potential for wastewater treatment applications.

Mn substitution elevates goethite's surface hydroxyl density versus pure goethite. • More surface hydroxyls on Mn-goethite accelerate humification from precursors. • Mn-goethite serves as oxidant to promote oxypolymerization of humic precursors. • DMSO hydrogen-bond shielding lowers electron transfer and Mn²⁺ release in solution. Electron transfer via hydrogen bonding is crucial for humification. s In nature settings, iron minerals usually coexist with manganese in an isomorphous-replacement manner, attributable to the equal ionic radii of ferric iron and trivalent manganese. Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether abundant surface hydroxyl groups on manganese-substituted iron minerals influence humification. Herein, the abiotic humification of humic precursors with manganese-substituted iron mineral (e.g. Mn-substituted goethite) was systematically investigated for the first time, especially in the role of hydrogen bonding interactions between the mineral and humic precursors. Mn-substituted goethite possessed a greater surface hydroxyl density compared to pure goethite, resulting in a significantly accelerated humification rate. Furthermore, the introduction of a hydrogen bonding shielding agent, such as dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), into the reaction system containing humic precursors and the mineral resulted in a marked decrease in both the manganese concentration within the precursor solution and the system’s overall electron transfer capability. These results demonstrated that hydrogen bonding between the mineral and humic precursors enhanced their electron transfer rate, thereby facilitating the humification process. This research offers new insights into abiotic humification mediated by iron/manganese concomitant minerals, enriching the understanding of the global carbon cycle affected by soil geochemical processes. Dual-atom catalysts (DACs) driven by peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation have demonstrated significant potential for addressing the inherent scaling relationship limitation of reaction intermediates, but in-depth mechanistic insight into synergistic interactions between dual-metal sites remains elusive. The Fe–Mn DAC has been designed with the largest electronegativity difference among Fe-based metal pairs to enhance electron transfer and synergistic interactions. The Fe–Mn DAC exhibits exceptional catalytic performance for bisphenol A (BPA) degradation, achieving a reaction rate constant (kobs) of 1.36 min−1, and a turnover frequency to PMS concentration ratio of 34.0 L min−1 g−2, which significantly surpasses the performance of reported state-of-the-art DACs, SACs, and nanocatalysts. The log kobs value correlated well with the σ+ value (R2 = 0.80), indicating that the Fe–Mn DAC readily targets pollutants with strong electron-donating abilities. Besides, 1O2 plays a key role in the Fe–Mn DAC/PMS system for BPA degradation. Based on density functional theory calculations, Fe and Mn active sites with a large electronegativity difference effectively enhance the synergistic interactions and decouple the activation and stabilization of reaction intermediates to address the inherent scaling relationship limitation. This study provides a robust framework for the rational design of DACs to enable efficient and sustainable water treatment.

Bimetallic catalysts can effectively enhance the catalytic degradation efficiency of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), which is usually attributed to the enhancement of electron transfer, but currently, there is no clear explanation of the mechanism of how the electron transfer is enhanced. A nitrogen-doped Fe/Mn composite biochar (FeMn-NBC) was co-constructed by hydrothermal synthesis and high-temperature calcination. The FeMn-NBC activated PMS more efficiently than the monometallic one due to the enhanced electron transfer between Fe and Mn. The FeMn-NBC/PMS system activated PMS with Mn as the active center, and the high oxidation state of Mn4+promoted the acceleration of the PMS adsorption of the generation of Mn2+/Mn3+. This gaining effect accelerated the electron cycling between Fe2+/Fe3+and Mn2+/Mn3+/Mn4+, which enhanced the PMS catalysis to generate free radicals (•OH, SO4•−and •O2−) and non-radicals (1O2) for the efficient degradation of diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP). Benefiting from this gaining effect, the degradation rate of DIBP by the FeMn-NBC/PMS system was increased by 2.43 and 3.38 times compared to Fe-NBC and Mn-NBC. The bimetallic-enhanced electron transfer mechanism proposed in this study facilitated the development of efficient catalysts for more efficient and selective removal of organic pollutants.
