Emerging contaminants (ECs) have been frequently detected in the aquatic environment and have adverse effect on the environment. In our present study, four ECs (800 μgL −1 oxytetracycline (OTC) and tetracycline (TC); 400 μgL −1 sulfadiazine (SD) and sulfamethazine (SMT)) spiked into the secondary wastewater effluent (SWE) were treated by novel UV/pre-magnetized Fe 0 /PS process (UV/pre-Fe 0 /PS). TC, OTC and SMT could be completely removed within 30 min and 98.4% SD could be removed within 60 min, while less than 10%, 20% and 60% ECs could be removed by Fe 0 /PS, pre-Fe 0 /PS and UV process within 60 min. Synergetic factor values (6.1–12.3) in UV/pre-Fe 0 /PS were much larger than in UV/Fe 0 /PS (2.3–5.4) to remove various ECs, achieving 0.7 – 2.2 times enhancement in degradation rate constants and 45%–86% reduction in treatment costs. EPR spectra and scavenging tests by tert-butyl alcohol and methanol confirmed that not only faster and more SO 4 − and OH radicals were produced but also their contributions to SMT removal were enhanced. Optimization of dosage of Fe 0 (0 – 0.4 mM) and dosage of PS (0 – 0.4 mM) indicated that 0.2 mM Fe 0 and 0.2 mM PS was the optimal dosage. Meanwhile, this process not only could enhance 0.7–15.8 times degradation rate constant but also could reduce about 14.3–97.9% costs to remove various ECs compared with US/Fe 0 /PS, ozonation, VUV/UV/Fe 3+ and UV/H 2 O 2 process. Moreover, it could enhance 1.4 times of degradation rate constant and reduce about 62% cost to remove SMT in another SWE, indicating the applicability in different wastewaters. Therefore, UV/pre-Fe 0 /PS process is promising and cost-effective to remove ECs in SWEs.

In this study, nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) was used to enhance UV/Fe 0 /H 2 O 2 process for highly salty wastewater at neutral pH. The addition of Fe 0 could not accelerate the UV/H 2 O 2 process for salty wastewater treatment at neutral pH due to the precipitation of Fe ions. While NTA added into UV/Fe 0 /H 2 O 2 process which could form complex with Fe ion, the tartrazine removal could increase from 45.7% to 84.7% within 60 min. The k -value of the UV/Fe 0 -NTA/H 2 O 2 system to remove tartrazine is also 2.2 times higher than that in UV/Fe 0 /H 2 O 2 system. Meanwhile, the UV/Fe 0 -NTA/H 2 O 2 process could obtain good performance for salt wastewater treatment under a wide salt concentration level of 0–0.2 M. It can also expand the application range of pH to neutral pH. SEM and XPS characterization showed that the corrosion rate of Fe 0 in salty system was faster, and the presence of NTA could accelerate the recirculation of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ on the Fe 0 surface. EPR spectroscopic analysis and scavenge experiments showed that • OH was the main reactive radical for the removal of tartrazine in the UV/Fe 0 -NTA/H 2 O 2 system. In addition, the k -value for removing tartrazine in various types of salt systems in the UV/Fe 0 -NTA/H 2 O 2 system was 3.2–4.2 times that of the UV/Fe 0 /H 2 O 2 system. It demonstrated UV/Fe 0 -NTA/H 2 O 2 processes fits to different types of salt system. Therefore, this study will provide a new method for the treatment of saline wastewater at neutral pH.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a persistent emerging contaminant that has attracted increasing attention due to its recalcitrance and toxicity. This study demonstrates the efficacy of a zero-valent iron (Fe 0 ) mediated biogas upgrading system for simultaneous PFOA degradation and methane production, with PET microplastics playing a secondary role in the degradation process. At a PFOA dosage of 0.3 mg/L, defluorination efficiencies ranging from 21.22% to 31.98% were achieved after five biogas upgrading cycles (approximately 25 days), accompanied by enhanced CO 2 methanation performance (ultimate CH 4 content >95%). At a PFOA concentration of 10 mg/L, analysis of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) revealed a significant decrease in protein content within the reactors. Molecular docking models and reactive oxygen species (ROS) analyses suggested that the binding of PFOA to specific amino acid residues mitigated its cytotoxicity. The microbial community in the Fe 0 -mediated reactor was dominated by Methanosaeta , a strictly acetoclastic methanogen. Furthermore, metagenomic analysis indicated the upregulation of key genes associated with methanogenesis and fluoride transport under Fe 0 mediation. Characterization of infrared spectrum and fluorinated metabolic intermediates suggested that PFOA degradation proceeded primarily via stepwise decarboxylation pathways. This study not only confirms the roles of Fe 0 and PET microplastics in PFOA removal but also reveals the synergistic metabolic coupling between defluorination and methanogenesis, therby elucidating the mechanisms of Fe 0 -enhanced PFOA degradation.

Zero-valent iron (Fe 0 ) is widely packed in filters for Cr(VI) removal, but it suffers from ferrochrome precipitate passivation. In this study, a mixed Fe 0 and biochar (BC) system was established and investigated for promoted Fe 0 corrosion and enhanced Cr(VI) removal through iron‑carbon micro-electrolysis (IC-ME) by batch and column experiments with Fe 0 and BC as controls. Due to electrochemical reaction between Fe 0 and BC, there was an enhancement in iron corrosion and subsequent formation of secondary minerals on Fe 0 surface. These minerals included magnetite, lepidocrocite, and goethite, which facilitated Cr(VI) adsorption and reduction. The Fe 0 -BC system therefore obtained a higher Cr(VI) removal rate of 86.3 % within 6 h than those of the BC (7.9 %) and Fe 0 (12.5 %) systems. Chromium species distribution showed that 76.2 % of removed Cr(VI) was converted to Cr(III). The resultant Cr(III) of 68.4 % was immobilized on Fe 0 and BC surfaces due to precipitation and sequestration. The optimal Fe/BC mass ratio was 2:1 for galvanic reaction and Cr(VI) removal. The removal of Cr(VI) by Fe 0 -BC exhibited a pH-dependency, with acidic conditions favoring higher removal rates. Additionally, the column experiment result revealed that Cr(VI) removal capacity of 4.0 mg Cr(VI)/(g Fe 0 ) and operational lifespan of 1851 PV in the Fe 0 -BC column were 6.7 and 3.9-fold greater than those in the Fe 0 column, further confirming that galvanic reaction could effectively alleviate Fe 0 surface passivation. These results indicated that mixed Fe 0 and BC as an effective medium in filter tanks could form IC-ME to enhance Cr(VI) reduction and immobilization during water treatment.

Iron sludge produced numerously from drinking water treatment plants can be recycled to create catalyst for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. In this study, iron sludge-derived catalysts were synthesized via one-step pyrolysis process by self-reduction in argon atmosphere. The crystallite structures and catalytic performance of these catalysts were strongly dependent on the pyrolytic temperature. The product carbonized at 900 °C (Fe 0 /Fe 3 C) exhibited a superior catalytic behavior with 99% ciprofloxacin (CIP, 10 mg/L) degradation in 20 min due to the synergistic effect of Fe 0 and graphitic carbon. The influences of reaction parameters on the CIP degradation were further investigated and the Fe 0 /Fe 3 C-PMS process had a wide efficient pH range from 3 to 9. The catalyst also exhibited excellent magnetic property and could be easily separated with external magnetic field. Radical quenching study and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests indicated that sulfate radical (SO 4 − ), hydroxyl radical ( OH), superoxide radical (O 2 − ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) contributed to the degradation of CIP. This study extended the application of Fe 0 /Fe 3 C to catalytic oxidation of other typical refractory organic contaminants and confirmed its excellent catalytic activity . Overall, this study provided a cost-effective iron sludge reuse method to develop an environment-friendly catalyst for decontamination of organics pollutants, and also to relieve detrimental influences on aqueous environment by discharging the iron sludge.

In this study, mesoporous carbon (MC) supported nano Fe 0 was prepared from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) using MnCO 3 as template, which was used as the catalyst to activate persulfate (PS) for the removal of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) from aqueous solution. The nano Fe 0 was immobilized on MC by liquid phase reduction to overcome the drawbacks of nano Fe 0 for persulfate (PS) activation, including being easily aggregated and oxidized. The experimental results showed that the nano Fe 0 /MC + PS system achieved 92.1% of TC removal, while the MC + PS system and nano Fe 0 + PS systems showed 78.5% and 33.7% of TC removal, respectively. High removal efficiency in the nano Fe 0 /MC + PS system could be attributed to the superior PS activation capability due to the synergistic effects of nano Fe 0 and MC. In order to better understand the removal mechanism, the effects of nano Fe 0 loading amount ( c ), dosage (m), PS/TC mole ratio ( R m ) and initial pH on TC removal were evaluated in the nano Fe 0 /MC + PS system. The results showed that the removal efficiency of TC was enhanced with the increase of nano Fe 0 loading amount and dosage, while slightly decrease with the increase of PS/TC mole ratio. The maximum removal of TC was 97.7% under the optimal conditions: c = 20%, m = 0.8 g/L, R m = 50/1 and pH = 5. According to the results of radical scavengers’ studies and intermediates analysis, SO 4 − , which was produced from catalytic activation of PS by nano Fe 0 and Fe 2+ on the surface of Fe 0 /MC, plays a significant role for TC degradation in the nano Fe 0 /MC + PS system. The Fe 0 /MC + PS system exhibited a superior oxidation process for the removal of TC from aqueous solution with excellent stability and reusability of Fe 0 /MC.

Significant concerns have been raised over the removal of antibiotics, such as tetracyclines(TC) in aquatic environments. Herein, we synthesized a new type of heterogeneous catalyst by supporting Fe 0 nanopartciles(FeNPs) onto carbon coated ZIF-8 (C@ZIF-8). The carbon layer formed by glucose was beneficial to maintain the morphology and porous structure of ZIF-8, which can also appropriately improve the hydrophobicity of ZIF-8 for enriching the TC. The as-prepared FeNPs-C@ZIF-8 catalyst featured an extreme large specific surface area(1122.16 m 2 /g), and the supported FeNPs with an average diameter of 6.13 nm exhibited a high dispersity on the supporting matrix of C@ZIF-8. For the removal of tetracycline, the large specific surface area of FeNPs-C@ZIF-8 allowed for an easy access of tetracycline to the FeNPs, while the highly dispersed FeNPs served as actived sites for the efficient degradation of tetracycline. A synergistic effect between adsorption and catalytic degradation of FeNPs(5%, mass fraction)-C@ZIF-8 was proven to be responsible for the high-performance removal of tetracycline with the removal efficiency high up to 93.02% at pH 5, 25 °C. The FeNPs-C@ZIF-8 was capable of recycling after activation with supplementary Fe 0 , which still maintained a high removal efficiency of 75.52% in the 5th cycle within 20 min.

Incorporating Fe 0 into
the porosity of silicon-based
materials can overcome the shortcomings of nanozero-valent iron (nZVI),
such as aggregation, passivation, and secondary release of reduction
products. The mass transfer resistance due to iron oxidation expansion
and consequent pore blockage during uranium reductive coprecipitation
remains unclear. The present work employed amino-functionalized mesoporous
silica (NH 2 –SGB) as the support to precisely regulate
the spatial occupancy rate of Fe 0 in the pores, and synthesized
a series of Fe 0 @NH 2 –SGB ( x -PV, x = 0.00, 0.33, 0.50, and 0.67) composites.
Batch experiments and structural characterization results illustrated
that Fe 0 @NH 2 –SGB (0.33-PV) achieved 97.0%
U(VI) removal and an equilibrium immobilization capacity of 48.3 mg·g –1 from 10 mg·L –1 initial U(VI)
solution at pH 5.0 with 0.2 g·L –1 added, and
a Langmuir-fitted theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 449.43
mg·g –1 at room temperature, which is better
than that of 0.50-PV and 0.67-PV. The reserved redundant pore of Fe 0 @NH 2 –SGB (0.33-PV) can effectively accommodate
the iron–uranium coprecipitation products, maintain the unobstructed
mass transfer channels, and avoid the orifice blockage effect, resulting
in an effective utilization rate of Fe 0 to 98.2%, which
exceeded that of 0.67-PV (46.7%), the uranium fixation product achieved
a spatial fit of up to 89.1% pore volume and realized confined encapsulation
in the pore. Mechanistic analysis revealed that the immobilization
of U(VI) first took place on the surface of the sample via selective
trapping by −NH 2 groups. Subsequently, the Fe 0 and Fe(II) in the pores efficiently reduced U(VI) to U(IV)
and achieved stable self-sealing immobilization. Meanwhile, continuous
30-day static desorption tests and acid stress tests showed uranium
leaching rates consistently below 0.5%, confirming the long-term stabilization
effect of the confinement encapsulation strategy. It provides a novel
material design strategy for the rational design of confined nanomaterials
and the long-term immobilization of uranium in contaminated groundwater.

Lignocellulose (LC), a distinctive biomass fibrous material, exhibits unique potential in catalysis due to its inherent structural properties and rich functional group. In this study, an efficient and environmentally friendly catalyst (LT-Fe 0 ) was successfully fabricated by immobilizing zero-valent iron (Fe 0 ) onto plant tannin-functionalized lignocellulose (LT). The as-prepared LT-Fe 0 exhibited remarkable catalytic activity toward ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation in aqueous solutions, achieving a removal efficiency of 93.21% under optimum conditions ([C 0 ] = 50 mg L −1 , [LT-Fe 0 ] = 0.5 g L −1 , T = 25 °C and pH = 3.0). The catalyst demonstrated effective anti-interference capability against some typical co-existing factors. Moreover, LT-Fe 0 retained 90.12% of its initial removal efficiency after six regeneration cycles. This excellent performance was attributed to the protective role of the LT matrix, which effectively reduced the agglomeration and oxidation of Fe 0 active sites. Radical quenching experiments confirmed that hydroxyl radicals (•OH) were the predominant reactive oxygen species responsible for CIP degradation. Based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis, possible degradation pathways of CIP over LT-Fe 0 were proposed. Furthermore, toxicological assessment revealed that the degradation process substantially reduced the toxicity of CIP and its intermediates. This work provides a novel route for lignocellulose valorization and offers a practical solution for mitigating CIP contamination in specific aquatic environments.

Biomass derived N-doped carbon-encapsulated nano zero-valent iron (NC@Fe 0 ) was successfully used to activate hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) for efficient oxidation of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA). The as-prepared NC@Fe 0 exhibited high H 2 O 2 activation performance, with a TBBPA removal efficiency of 95.9 % and an oxidation rate constant of 0.031 min −1 . The quenching experiments and electrochemical tests showed that the overall contributions of nonradical pathways were over 83.0 %, via synergistic production of singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and an electron transfer process (ETP). Specifically, the N group on NC@Fe 0 greatly enhanced 1 O 2 production, while formation of surface complexes (OVs-H 2 O 2 ) was responsible for the ETP mechanism. High Performance Liquid Chromatography Quadrupole Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer (HPLC-Q-TOF MS/MS) and Toxicity Estimation Software Tool (T.E.S.T) clearly demonstrated that products were mainly generated via debromination and β -scission, where the products were less toxic than the parent. During practical wastewater, in both lake water and domestic wastewaters, NC@Fe 0 /H 2 O 2 removed over 91.0 % of TBBPA. This study highlighted the considerable contribution of nonradicals in contaminant removal and enriched our understandings of a green activator for future environmental remediations.

This study demonstrated a fast and efficient treatment of highly salty wastewater in a hydroxylamine (HA) enhanced Fe 0 /H 2 O 2 system. The apparent rate constant ( k ) in Fe 0 -HA/H 2 O 2 system could achieve 7.9 times higher than that in Fe 0 /H 2 O 2 system using tartrazine as the target pollutant and Na 2 SO 4 as the model salt. The value of k for removing tartrazine in the salty system by Fe 0 -HA/H 2 O 2 process even 12.7 times higher than that in the conventional system which was attributed to the faster Fe 0 corrosion rate in the salty system. Meanwhile, Fe 0 -HA/H 2 O 2 process could obtain remarkable performance for highly salty wastewater treatment at wide salt concentration levels (0–0.2 M) and could also widen the application of pH to neutral pH. The characterizations by SEM and XPS, the intensity of DMPO–OH adduct signals and detection of Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ ions in different systems confirmed the good performance was owing to the faster Fe 0 corrosion rate in the salty system and acceleration of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ recycle owing the addition of HA inducing fast catalysis of H 2 O 2 and generation of hydroxyl radicals. Moreover, the value of k for removing tartrazine in various types of salty system by Fe 0 -HA/H 2 O 2 process was 2.9–30.8 times larger than Fe 0 /H 2 O 2 process demonstrating the good suitability of Fe 0 -HA/H 2 O 2 process at various types of salty system. Therefore, this study will shed lights on the reactivity of the Fe 0 -HA/H 2 O 2 system and provide an alternative pathway for removal of salty wastewater.
