FeNi@CNS nanocomposite as an efficient electrochemical catalyst for N2-to-NH3 conversion under ambient conditions

Tayiba Ilyas,Fazal Raziq,Nasir Ilyas,Liuxin Yang,Sharafat Ali,Amir Zada,Syedul Hasnain Bakhtiar,Yong Wang,Huahai Shen,Liang Qiao

The electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) has emerged as a promising renewable energy source and a feasible strategy as an alternative to Haber-Bosch ammonia (NH 3 ) synthesis. However, finding an efficient and cost-effective robust catalyst to activate and cleave the extremely strong triple bond in nitrogen (N 2 ) for electrocatalytic NRR is still a challenge. Herein, a FeNi@CNS nanocomposite as an efficient catalyst for N 2 fixation under ambient conditions is designed. This FeNi@CNS nanocomposite was prepared by a simple water bath process and post-calcination. The FeNi@CNS is demonstrated to be a highly efficient NRR catalyst, which exhibits better NRR performance with exceptional Faradaic efficiency of 9.83% and an NH 3 yield of 16.52 μg h −1 cm −2 in 0.1 M Na 2 SO 4 aqueous solution. Besides, high stability and reproducibility with consecutive 6 cycles for two hours are also demonstrated throughout the NRR electrocatalytic process for 12 h. Meanwhile, the FeNi@CNS catalyst encourages N 2 adsorption and activation as well as effectively suppressing competitive HER. Therefore, this earth-abundant FeNi@CNS catalyst with a subtle balance of activity and stability has excellent potential in NRR industrial applications.

FeNi/NiFe2O4 hybrids confined in N-doped carbon sponge derived from Hofmann-type MOFs for oxygen electrocatalysis

Haoquan Wang,Shan Su,Tao Yu,Chunfeng Meng,Hu Zhou,Wenjia Zhao,Shitan Yan,Ting Bian,Aihua Yuan

Rational design of metal/metal oxide hybrids embedded in heteroatom-doped carbon is a desired strategy to improve the kinetics of oxygen reduction (ORR)/evolution (OER) reactions. Herein, we present an elaborate method for preparing FeNi-based bimetallic alloy/oxide hybrids implanted in spongy-like N-doped carbon (S-FeNi/NiFe 2 O 4 @NC) via introducing FeNi Hofmann-type metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as pyrolysis precursors. Impressively, the evenly distributed FeNi alloys coexisting with oxides are directly derived from bimetallic nodes in the MOFs, which are expected to boost the intrinsic electrocatalytic activity by multi-compositional synergism. Meanwhile, spongy-like N-doped carbon matrix would be effective for achieving rich metal active sites and rapid mass/electron transport. Accordingly, the obtained S-FeNi/NiFe 2 O 4 @NC-800 shows an extraordinary electrochemical activity with an ORR/OER potential gap of 0.76 V. In addition, the catalyst emerges outstanding stability with potential losses that are only half those of commercial reference catalysts for both ORR and OER after 10,000 cycles. Importantly, zinc-air battery assembled with S-FeNi/NiFe 2 O 4 @NC-800 delivers a high peak power density of 129 mW cm −2 and an excellent specific capacity of 837 mA h g −1 .

A rational design of FeNi alloy nanoparticles and carbonate-decorated perovskite as a highly active and coke-resistant anode for solid oxide fuel cells

Shuo Zhai,Heping Xie,Bin Chen,Meng Ni

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are a kind of clean and efficient device to convert chemical energy in fuels into electricity. However, since anodes with high catalytic activity and carbon tolerance are still underdeveloped, the consequent serious performance degradation of the cells under operational conditions significantly confines their commercial applications. Here we propose a new strategy to remove carbon deposition by in-situ formation of alkali metal carbonate on the anode surface. A multi-phase composite anode, which is composed of an orthorhombic single perovskite main phase, a Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) layered perovskite second phase, and an in-situ exsolved FeNi alloy minor phase, is developed by one-step reduction of La 0.65 Li 0.05 Sr 0.3 Fe 0.8 Ni 0.2 O 3-δ (LLSFN 0.05 ) at a high temperature. The deficiencies of the RP phase and A-site caused by Li dopant would increase oxygen bulk diffusion, and FeNi nanoparticles would boost the catalytic activity. Moreover, when dealing with carbon fuel, lithium carbonate can be synthesized on the anode surface, serving as a good oxygen ion conductor and an efficient catalyst for coke removal by gasification. A single cell with our reduced LLSFN 0.05 anode exhibited maximum power densities of 596, 467, and 424 mW cm −2 at 750 ℃ with H 2 , CO, and wet C 2 H 6 as the fuel, respectively. In addition, the cells could have a long-term stable operation for over 80 h using CO as the fuel at 200 mA cm −2 . This study provides a new material design strategy to develop a highly active and coke-resistant anode.

Electrochemical Determination of Acetaminophen with a FeNi Nanoparticle Reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO) Nanocomposite and Differential Pulse Voltammetry (DPV)

Yu Yan,Si Zeng,Fang Xu,Yongmei Hu,Haiping Huang

Acetaminophen (AP) is one of the most commonly used antipyretics. Accurate and efficient determination of its concentration is of great significance to human health. In this work, FeNi alloy nanoparticles and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) were compounded by an ultrasonic method to obtain FeNi/rGO nanocomposites. The nanocomposites were analyzed by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), and cyclic voltammetry (CV). Due to the catalytic activity of FeNi alloy nanoparticles and the synergy between the high specific surface area and conductivity of reduced graphene oxice (rGO), a FeNi/rGO nanocomposite showed excellent electrocatalysis for acetaminophen determination. With differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) as the analytical method, the linear range for acetaminophen is from 1 to 100 and 100 to 3,000 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) equal to 0.3 μM. Moreover, the sensor also has good reproducibility and selectivity with high recoveries in practical analysis.

FeNi/C/TiO2 composites derived from [Fe(pz)Ni(CN)4] Hofmann framework and MXene for efficient electromagnetic absorption

Gang Li,Ruiyang Tan,Xiangcheng Lu,Xinyu Zhang,Chengcheng Zhang,Bohong Gao,Yuting Zhou,Ke Chen,Ping Chen,Xinyi Wang

Chemical composition and morphological optimization are both effective strategies for constructing excellent electromagnetic wave absorption (EMWA) materials. While efficient EMWA materials derived from both metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and MXenes have been extensively studied, composites derived from the Hofmann framework with MXene have not been reported. In this study, we employed a Hofmann framework ([Fe(pz)Ni(CN) 4 ], pz = pyrazine) and MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) to create new MXene@Hofmann (MH1 and MH2) composites, using a simple co-precipitation method with two different contents of [Fe(pz)Ni(CN) 4 ]. The FeNi/C/TiO 2 composites with a multi-layered structure inherited from MXene were prepared by annealing the MXene@Hofmann composites at 500, 600, and 700 °C, resulting in the formation of MH1-500/600/700 and MH2-500/600/700 composites. Their compositions, morphologies, electromagnetic parameters, and EMWA performances were characterized. For the composites with a high [Fe(pz)Ni(CN) 4 ] content, MH2-600 has a minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) value of −30.63 dB at a thickness of only 1.8 mm and the broadest effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 3.90 GHz at 2.0 mm, while MH2-700 exhibits superior EMWA performance with an RL min value of −34.34 dB at 1.9 mm and an EAB value of 4.96 GHz at 2.1 mm. Their impressive EMWA performance might be attributed to the synergistic dielectric loss and magnetic loss and also the impedance matching from the reasonable ratio of the magnetic and dielectric components. This work demonstrates an effective strategy for constructing EMWA materials from the Hofmann framework and MXene.

Bifunctional hierarchical NiCoP@FeNi LDH nanosheet array electrocatalyst for industrial-scale high-current-density water splitting

Liming Yang,Tao Yang,Enhui Wang,Xiangtao Yu,Kang Wang,Zhentao Du,Sheng Cao,Kuo-Chih Chou,Xinmei Hou

Aiming to design and prepare non-noble metal electrocatalysts for hydrogen production at high current density (HCD), NiCoP@FeNi LDH hierarchical nanosheets were deposited on nickel foam progressively using a hydrothermal-phosphorization-electrodeposition process. For hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), NiCoP@FeNi LDH/NF requires only 195 and 230 mV overpotentials to reach 1000 mA cm −2 , respectively. For overall water splitting, only 1.70 V is required at 1000 mA cm −2 . This is the largest value for non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts reported so far at HCD. The hierarchical structure exhibits good electron transport capability and the porous-macroporous structure enhances the gas release rate, resulting in enhanced hydrogen production at HCD. Especially, the synergistic effect of NiCoP and FeNi LDH contributes to the adsorption-desorption equilibrium of intermediate radicals during the reaction process and ultimately enhances the catalytic activity. This work provides useful direction for industrial-scale hydrogen production applications at HCD.

Nano FeNi-OH/Co(OH)2/NF p-n heterojunction for efficient oxygen evolution reaction and electrocatalytic urea oxidation: Built-In electric field regulated charge distribution and mechanism exploration

Yulan Song,Cuilan Tang,Tao Wang,Yansong Liu,Xiaoshan He,Chunping Xie,Guo Chen,Chengfu Deng,Zhibing He,Jinglin Huang

Constructing electronic structures with abundant surface/interface structures and effective regulation of catalytic active centers is an effective strategy to improve electrocatalytic performance, but designing efficient bifunctional non-noble metal oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR) electrocatalysts remains challenging. Studies have shown that p-n heterojunctions can effectively regulate the electronic structure of catalytic active sites while having abundant surface/interface structure, which plays an important role in improving the native catalytic activity. Herein, FeNi-OH/Co(OH) 2 /NF p-n heterojunction structure was constructed by a simple electrochemical deposition method, and the effects of content, deposition time, and number of cycles on catalytic performance were investigated. The results show that Fe(0.02 M)Ni(0.07 M)–OH(100 s)/Co(OH) 2 (5)/NF composite material has the best OER and UOR catalytic performance. For OER, the electrocatalyst only requires an overpotential of 271 mV to obtain a current density of 50 mA cm −2 , and an applied voltage of 1.56 V to obtain a total water decomposition of 10 mA cm −2 (FeNi-OH/Co(OH) 2 /NF||Pt). For UOR, a voltage of only 1.314 V ( vs. RHE) is required to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , and an applied voltage of 1.44 V can achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Experimental, in situ measurements and theoretical results indicate that the improvement in catalytic activity is mainly due to the potential difference between FeNi-OH and Co(OH) 2 , which induces self-driven charge transfer at the interface, promoting the adsorption of reactant molecules, optimizing reaction barriers, accelerating chemical bond cleavage, and thus promoting catalytic reactions.

Electrochemical synergy between FeNi nanoalloy@tungsten carbide on N-doped graphitized carbon layers as an excellent electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction

Baoli Wang,Yijing Ai,Yucen Yao,Meng Jiang,Lijun Yan,Shiguan Xu,Wei Sun

Reasonable construction of non-noble metal-based catalysts as a substitute to precious metal-based catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water splitting has been a challenge. Herein, ultrasmall core-shell-structured FeNi encapsulated within tungsten carbide (WC) stabilized in a thin N-doped graphitized carbon layer (NCL) was proposed through a unique one-step encapsulation strategy combined with a high temperature carbonization procedure and tested as an OER catalyst. Physicochemical characterizations of the newly prepared material demonstrate that metal nanoparticles are embedded in the carbon layers of FeNi@WC-NCL, which possess a highly porous structure and large specific surface area. By modulating the electronic effects of both the FeNi alloy and WC, the optimal NiFe@WC-NCL catalyst presents excellent performance with an onset potential of 1.38 V (vs. RHE) and an overpotential of only 279 mV (vs. RHE) at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 towards OER. Moreover, NiFe@WC-NCL exhibits excellent durability after 2000 cycles with a slight overpotential decrease of only 11 mV. Both the property and stability of the proposed catalyst surpass the benchmark RuO 2 catalyst, providing great potential as an alternative to precious metal catalysts for the OER.

Construction of an FeNi-Mo2C@SiO2 monolith electrocatalyst with an increased number of active sites and enhanced intrinsic activity toward water oxidation

Huanyu Chen,Jia-Qi Bai,Yuxue Wei,Jingshuai Chen,Song Sun,Chang-Jie Mao

The exploration of high-efficiency and Earth-abundant electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a tremendous challenge. Herein, an ultrafine FeNi–Mo2C composite immobilized on the surface of SiO2 support is fabricated through annealing a mixture of Fe, Ni and Mo precursors and SiO2 nanospheres. The electronic structure of the FeNi alloy is tuned by combining with Mo2C, forming a hybrid architecture with enhanced intrinsic activity of active sites. The introduced SiO2 nanospheres reduce the nanoparticle size of the FeNi–Mo2C composite, further increasing the population of the surface electrochemically active sites. Benefiting from the compositional and structural merits, the FeNi-Mo2C@SiO2 electrocatalyst exhibits excellent OER behavior with a small overpotential of 180 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2, an ultra-small Tafel slope of 11.0 mV dec−1, and good stability in alkaline media. The outstanding OER performance is attributed to the increased number and enhanced intrinsic activity of active sites due to the synergistic effect of each component. This study provides a promising way to design and develop an advanced electrocatalyst towards water oxidation.

FeNi alloys embedded in porous carbon shells on a dual substrate as efficient electrocatalysts for zinc–air batteries

Han Guo,Guangxu Yao,Chuanzhen Feng,Mi Wang,Huijuan Zhang,Yu Wang

Transition metal oxygen evolution/reduction reaction (ORR/OER) catalysts applied to Zn–air batteries (ZABs) have been extensively investigated, but the problems of transition metal electrocatalysts being prone to agglomeration and deactivation at high temperatures and the insufficient stability of the existing single carbon-based catalysts still exist. Herein, we present a dual-substrate strategy that confines first FeNi alloys in N-doped porous carbon shells and then embeds them onto dual-substrate nanofibers of Ti4O7 and C (FeNi/NC@Ti4O7-CNFs) by electrostatic spinning and annealing treatments. The domain-limiting effect provided by the porous carbon shells disperses the alloys and there is a strong synergy between the alloys and the N-doped carbon shells to modify the electronic structure. Additionally, Ti4O7 has excellent stability even in strongly alkaline environments. Accordingly, abundant M–NX active sites are achieved by the triple synergistic effect of Ti4O7 and C formed dual-substrate nanofibers, N-doped porous carbon shells, and highly dispersed alloys. The prepared FeNi/NC@Ti4O7-CNFs demonstrated a lower ORR and OER potential difference (ΔE = 0.656 V) than Pt/C and RuO2. The liquid ZAB assembled with this catalyst has a cycle life of more than 320 h. This work provides a valuable strategy for developing highly active catalysts for application in advanced electrochemical energy devices.

In situ construction of FeNi2Se4-FeNi LDH heterointerfaces with electron redistribution for enhanced overall water splitting

Hanzhi Yu,Yaoyi Xie,Liming Deng,Hongjiao Huang,Junnan Song,Deshuang Yu,Linlin Li,Shengjie Peng

Developing hierarchical heterostructures as bifunctional electrocatalysts which promote renewable hydrogen production is a desirable but challenging technology in electrochemical water splitting. Herein, the interface engineering of the FeNi2Se4-FeNi LDH composite is achieved by the in situ growth of FeNi LDH nanosheets and the subsequent partial selenization treatment. Enhanced mass transfer and accelerated gas release are achieved in such a unique self-supported hierarchical heterostructure during overall water splitting. Moreover, the strong electronic interaction between FeNi2Se4 and FeNi LDH optimizes the electron redistribution of Fe and Ni sites, which significantly improves the interfacial reactivity of reactants and/or intermediates with the hybrid catalyst. Benefiting from increased active sites and enhanced intrinsic activity, the hybrid electrocatalyst requires only a potential of 205 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and a potential of 106 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) to realize 10 mA cm−2. Specifically, the optimized FeNi2Se4-FeNi LDH as a bifunctional electrode in overall water splitting delivers 10 mA cm−2 at a low cell voltage of 1.56 V driven by a solar cell. This strategy by rational design of heterostructures thus paves an efficient pathway to fabricate active and non-precious bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.

FeNi co-doped electrocatalyst synthesized via binary ligand strategy as a bifunctional catalyst for Zn-air flow battery

Juan Cui,Yiming Leng,Zhonghua Xiang

Developing low-cost and excellent performance bifunctional catalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR) and Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER) in rechargeable Zn-air batteries is of great significance. Recently, metal organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived electrocatalysts have been widely studied in ORR and OER due to their large specific surface area and tunable pore structure. However, it is still a challenge to prepare hierarchical porous structure catalysts via facile approach, which is desired in the device manner. Herein, we synthesized a MOF-derived FeNi co-doped catalyst (termed as B-FeNi-N/C-1000) using the binary ligand strategy with a large specific area and suitable hierarchical pore structures which efficiently improves mass transfer to boost the high device performance. As a result, the B-FeNi-N/C-1000 exhibits an outstanding ORR performance with a half potential of 0.9 V vs. RHE and a low potential of 1.62 V vs. RHE at 10 mA cm −2 in alkaline media, which exceeds FeNi catalyst (i.e., FeNi-N/C-1000) via single ligand method and commercial Pt/C + IrO 2 . Additionally, the B-FeNi-N/C-1000 presents a higher power density of 102 mW cm −2 and a long-term stability that only losses 2% after 95 h in the self-assembly Zn-air battery. Accordingly, this work can provide a facile method to synthesize efficient bifunctional catalyst for, but not limit to Zn-air flow batteries.
