Screening of hierarchical porous UiO-67 for efficient removal of glyphosate from aqueous solution

Fei Fang,Quankun Lv,Peng Li,Yue Tao,Yan Zhang,Yi Zhou,Xuede Li,Jie Li

Defect engineering is essential for improving the adsorption performance of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Herein, hierarchical porous UiO-67(Zr) and analogs with controlled levels of defects were successfully obtained and applied to chemoselectively capture glyphosate (GP) from water. The obtained defective UiO-67 was stable at different pH values. The removal performance of defective UiO-67(Zr) was evaluated systematically as a function of different modulators, water chemistry and interfering ions. The maximum adsorption capacity of defective UiO-67(Zr) reached 322.58 mg/g, superior to most MOFs-based adsorbents. The defective UiO-67(Zr) also showed high selectivity for GP adsorption at high concentrations of humic acids (3 times) and interfering anions (100 times). In addition, the defective UiO-67(Zr) has shown good recovery performance and can effectively remove GP from a variety of contaminated water samples and multi-pollutant systems. The results of batch experiments and microscopic spectral characterization (XPS and FTIR) revealed that GP adsorption was mainly guided by electrostatic action, coordination, pore-filling and hydrogen bonding . These findings verified that the fabrication of defect sites played an important role in promoting the adsorption performance of MOFs. Our work provides a clue to the design of defective MOFs with high adsorption performance.

Synergistic effects of glyphosate and multiwall carbon nanotubes on Arabidopsis thaliana physiology and metabolism

Mingjing Ke,Yizhi Ye,Zhenyan Zhang,Michael Gillings,Qian Qu,Nuohan Xu,Lusheng Xu,Tao Lu,Jiade Wang,Haifeng Qian

Agricultural chemicals have the potential to become pollutants that adversely affect plant growth. Interactions between these compounds are likely, but potential synergies are under-researched. Multiwall carbon nanotubes are increasingly finding novel uses in agriculture, as delivery mechanisms and as slow-release fertilizers. There is potential for nanotubes to interact with other agricultural chemicals in unpredictable ways. To investigate this possibility, we examined interactions with glyphosate, a widely used herbicide that is also attracting increasing concern over its potential for non-target effects. Here we examined potential synergistic effects on hydroponically grown Arabidopsis thaliana . Single treatments did not affect plant growth significantly, or did only mildly. However, combined treatment significantly affected both plant root and shoot growth. High-level content of malondialdehyde and up-regulated of metabolic antioxidant molecules in plant indicated that combined group caused the strong oxidative damage, while the decreased of antioxidant enzyme activities indicated an imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS)and the antioxidant defense system due to the continuously generated ROS. Besides, several intermediate metabolites of unsaturated fatty acids synthesis pathways were up-regulated in combined treatment, which clarified that combined group changed membrane components. The increase of intermediate metabolites in combined group also reflected more energy consumption in the repairment of the disrupt of combined treatment. The synergistic effect observed was attributed to the accumulation of glyphosate resulting from permeability and transportability of the carbon nanotubes. Overall, the risk of nanotube-herbicide interaction suggests a caution use of nanotubes in agricultural applications.

Employing a fluorescent and colorimetric picolyl-functionalized rhodamine for the detection of glyphosate pesticide

Jianping Guan,Jiao Yang,Yue Zhang,Xiaoxue Zhang,Huajuan Deng,Juan Xu,Jinyi Wang,Mao-Sen Yuan

The ongoing poisoning of agricultural products has pushed the security problem to become an important issue. Among them, exceeding the standard rate of pesticide residues is the main factor influencing the quality and security of agricultural products. Monitoring pesticide residues and developing simple, yet ultrasensitive detection systems for pesticide residues are urgently needed. In this study, we successfully developed a novel rhodamine derivative as fluorescent and colorimetric chemosensor R-G for the rapid, selective and ultrasensitive detection of glyphosate pesticide residue in aqueous solution. Through a Cu 2+ -indicator displacement strategy, glyphosate can displace an indicator ( R-G ) from a Cu 2+ -indicator complex due to its strong affinity to bind with Cu 2+ to give a turn-on fluorescence and distinct color change. Moreover, a test strip was also fabricated to achieve a facile detection of glyphosate pesticide. To demonstrate the possibility of practical applications, glyphosate was detected on the surface of cabbage and in a spiked soil sample. The detection limit of 4.1 nM and the response time of 2 min indicate that the method is enough sensitive and rapid to detect the glyphosate residue at or below levels that pose a health risk.

A dual quantum dots-based ratio fluorescent probe for detecting Glyphosate in agricultural products

Qian Xiang,Wei Geng,Xiaoqi Guo,Yongjie Liu,Sunan Liu,Xiaojuan Jin,Yajuan Chang,Tongze Lin,Ling Zhu,Yunsu Ma

Glyphosate (Gly) is one of the most widely used herbicides globally. It is essential to conduct quantitative monitoring of Gly in the environment to avoid unnecessary exposure. In this study, we present the development of a novel ratiometric fluorescent probe based on blue carbon dots (bCDs) and red quantum dots (rQDs) for the sensitive and selective detection of Gly in agricultural products. The fluorescence of rQDs is rapidly quenched upon interaction with Gly by intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), serving as the detection signal, while the fluorescence of bCDs remains constant, acting as an internal reference. By measuring the ratio of the fluorescence intensities of bCDs and rQDs ( I 440 / I 640 ), quantitative detection of Gly was achieved. The probe demonstrated a detection limit (LOD) as low as 0.11 μM, with a strong linear response over a concentration range of 0.5 to 200 μM. The developed method was successfully applied to detect Gly residues in real agricultural products (potatoes, gingers and apples), yielding satisfactory recovery rates and demonstrating high resistance to interference from other compounds. This study provides a reliable, efficient, and practical tool for environmental monitoring and food safety assessments.

Visible-light photocatalytic degradation of glyphosate over BiVO4 prepared by different co-precipitation methods

Rui Huo,Xue-Ling Yang,You-Qin Liu,Yue-Hua Xu

Visible-light-driven bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 ) photocatalysts were prepared by the co-precipitation method. The BiVO 4 samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction, UV–visible diffuse reflectance, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), photocurrent, and as well as electron microscopy (SEM, TEM). The photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared BiVO 4 samples was tested through the photocatalytic oxidation of glyphosate under visible light irradiation. The dark yellow amorphous BiVO 4 powder was prepared by the HAc method after drying at 70   °C, but the bright yellow monoclinic BiVO 4 was obtained after keeping at room temperature in the air for several days. The dependence of the room temperature crystallization on moisture can explain the low crystallization temperature found in this work. The BiVO 4 sample calcined at 400   °C by the HAc method showed the highest photocatalytic activity for glyphosate degradation under visible light irradiation because of its high charge separation efficiency proven by EIS and photocurrent.

Uptake, Translocation, Metabolism, and Distribution of Glyphosate in Nontarget Tea Plant (Camellia sinensis L.)

Mengmeng Tong,Wanjun Gao,Weiting Jiao,Jie Zhou,Yeyun Li,Lili He,Ruyan Hou

The uptake, translocation, metabolism, and distribution behavior of glyphosate in nontarget tea plant were investigated. The negative effects appeared to grown tea saplings when the nutrient solution contained glyphosate above 200 mg L–1. Glyphosate was highest in the roots of the tea plant, where it was also metabolized to aminomethyl phosphonic acid (AMPA). The glyphosate and AMPA in the roots were transported through the xylem or phloem to the stems and leaves. The amount of AMPA in the entire tea plant was less than 6.0% of the amount of glyphosate. The glyphosate level in fresh tea shoots was less than that in mature leaves at each day. These results indicated that free glyphosate in the soil can be continuously absorbed by, metabolized in, and transported from the roots of the tea tree into edible leaves, and therefore, free glyphosate residues in the soil should be controlled to produce teas free of glyphosate.

Mechanism of glyphosate removal by biochar supported nano-zero-valent iron in aqueous solutions

Xianying Jiang,Zhuozhi Ouyang,Zhengfang Zhang,Chen Yang,Xiaoqin Li,Zhi Dang,Pingxiao Wu

The widespread use of glyphosate and the resulting environmental residues pose a serious threat to both crops and human health. The aim of this study was to investigate the adsorption process and removal mechanism of glyphosate by modified biochar (BC). Nano-zero-valent iron (NZVI) was loaded on the palm BC through liquid-phase chemical reduction. The composite material ((BC-NZVI)) was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy , Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy , and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, revealing that it had a high specific surface area, rich oxygen-containing functional groups and complex ligands. Adsorption experiments were conducted with modified BC to study the effects of contact time (0–3750 min), initial concentration (5–40 mg/L), pH (2.00–7.00) and coexisting pollutants (0–20 mg/L). The adsorption data could be fitted well with the pseudo second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm, indicating that the adsorption of glyphosate on the BC supported NZVI was a chemical and surface process. The maximum adsorption capacity was 80 mg/g at pH = 4, twice that of the original BC. At low concentrations, there was no influence on the adsorption of coexisting pollutants, sulfamethazine , cadmium ions , or phosphate; however, it had antagonistic effect ( Rq  < 1) when the initial concentration of H 2 PO 4 + was higher than 10 mg/L. The adsorption mechanisms involved pore-filling, hydrogen-bond, electrostatic interactions and complexation. Such strong absorbability, along with being easy to obtain and inexpensive, makes (BC-NZVI) potentially suitable for the treatment of agricultural wastewater and acidic farmland soils contaminated with organic pollutants .

Glyphosate Promotes the Spread of Antibiotic Resistance Genes in the Intestine: An Overlooked Environmental Risk

Junyue Zheng,Xiangguang Chen,Jiazhen Jiang,Fengchang Wu

Glyphosate (Gly) is currently the most commonly used broad-spectrum herbicide in the world. The extensive residues of Gly and its major metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) in food and the environment make it inevitable for humans to consume them. Although Gly has been shown to disturb the homeostasis of gut microbiome by inhibiting the shikimic acid pathway of microorganisms, the potential health effects [such as the occurrence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs)] remain unclear. Furthermore, as antibiotics that also act on the intestinal microbiota, their extensive residues inevitably lead to co-exposure with Gly. For these reasons, this study used zebrafish as experimental organisms to explore the effects of Gly/AMPA and oxytetracycline (OTC) exposure alone or in combination on ARGs in the intestine. Our results indicate that Gly exposure, rather than AMPA exposure, led to a 1.67-fold increase in the relative abundance of ARGs in the zebrafish intestine. Combined exposure to Gly and OTC led to a 2.30-fold increase in the relative abundance of ARGs in the zebrafish intestine, indicating a synergistic effect, whereas the additive effect of AMPA and OTC was negligible. In conclusion, the health risk of antibiotic resistance caused by Gly through the gut microbiota is a neglected hot topic. Further studies are needed to clarify Gly-induced functional drug resistance and to assess the human relevance of these findings using more appropriate model organisms.

Synergistic Adsorption of Glyphosate and Calcium on Ferrihydrite: Molecular Insights into Herbicide Fate in Soils

Mengqi Zhang,Wei Zhao,Xuewen Li,Hongju Ma,Xionghan Feng,Peng Cai,Wenfeng Tan,Xiaoming Wang

Glyphosate and calcium ions (Ca 2+ ) commonly coexist in calcareous soils and aquatic environments, where their interfacial interactions with Fe (oxyhydr)oxide critically influence the environmental fate of glyphosate. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying their co-adsorption on mineral surfaces remain poorly understood. Here, we combined batch adsorption experiments, zeta potential analysis, in situ attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, P K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy, and surface complexation modeling to investigate the co-adsorption behavior of glyphosate and Ca 2+ on ferrihydrite and to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms. The results demonstrated a synergistic co-adsorption of glyphosate and Ca 2+ on ferrihydrite across a wide range of glyphosate concentrations (0.0-2.0 mM) and pH values (4.0-10.0), which was driven by both electrostatic interactions and the formation of ternary surface complexes. Compared with the Ca 2+ -free system at pH 5.0 in the presence of 2.0 mM glyphosate, the addition of 1.0 mM Ca 2+ increased glyphosate adsorption by approximately 20%. At pH 5.0, the Ca 2+ -induced enhancement in glyphosate adsorption followed a glyphosate/Ca 2+ stoichiometric ratio of approximately 1.5. Spectroscopic, electrochemical, and modeling analyses further revealed that, at pH 5.0, glyphosate was predominantly adsorbed on ferrihydrite via bidentate and monodentate phosphonate-mediated Fe-O-P inner-sphere complexes, whereas Ca 2+ simultaneously coordinated with the phosphonate and carboxyl groups of one glyphosate molecule, thereby forming glyphosate-bridged ternary complexes. These findings provide direct molecular-level evidence for the interfacial configuration and cooperative adsorption of glyphosate and Ca 2+ on ferrihydrite, offering mechanistic insights into glyphosate retention, mobility, and environmental behavior in Fe- and Ca-rich soils.

Sensitive detection of glyphosate based on a Cu-BTC MOF/g-C3N4 nanosheet photoelectrochemical sensor

Yu Cao,Luona Wang,Chengyin Wang,Xiaoya Hu,Yunling Liu,Guoxiu Wang

A photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor based on hierarchically porous Cu-BTC/g-C 3 N 4 nanosheet (Cu-BTC/CN-NS, BTC = benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid) material was constructed for the first time. As a composite material, the hierarchically porous Cu-BTC can help to efficiently capture suitable pesticide molecules and accelerate signal transmission, while CN-NS possesses good optical performance. Under the irradiation of visible light, the Cu metal center can coordinate with the added glyphosate to form Cu-glyphosate complexes, leading to the increased steric hindrance of electron transfer and consequently resulted in an obvious decrease in photocurrent . Through this strategy, the constructed sensor can realize the detection of glyphosate from non-electroactive to electroactive. The results indicate that this photoelectrochemical sensor has a low detection limit of 1.3 × 10 −13  mol L −1 and a wide detection range (1.0 × 10 −12 –1.0 × 10 −8  mol L −1 and 1.0 × 10 −8 ∼ 1.0 × 10 −3  mol L −1 ). Furthermore, this Cu-BTC/CN-NS based sensor has the characteristics of short detection time and easy operation. It has great potential applications in photoelectrochemical analysis.

Shape memory and molecularly imprinted porous polyvinyl alcohol composite membrane to detect glyphosate in water

Wen Xin,Yajun Ren,Xiaofeng Song,Honghui Teng,Na Tian,Xiyue Wang,Junfu Wang

To develop portable materials for rapid pollutant detection, a high-porosity, good shape-memory, and molecularly imprinted composite membranes were prepared by combination of synthetic polymer (P-P-PAA), molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) and Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). The addition of P-P-PAA enhanced the porosity of the porous P-P-PAA/PVA membrane from 84.96 % to 98.41 %, which arrived at the highest, and the mechanical properties were improved to 1.65 MPa and 154.9 %. The membrane achieved shape recovery within 20 s via the external water stimuli. Compared to the imprinted PVA, the imprinted composite membrane enhanced detectability and speed for Glyphosate (GLY) which reached 50 mg/g within 30 min. Overall, this work successfully developed a shape-memory porous imprinting membrane, which not only offers a new strategy for enhancing detection efficiency but also promotes the advancement of smart membrane materials for on-site water quality monitoring.

Visual and rapid detection of glyphosate in tea using a MOF-driven fluorescent paper sensor

Hui Li,Chuang Jiang,Wanqi Jiang,Yuqing Zhang,Xiyao Liang,Yingying Feng,Yingnan Liu

To overcome the limitations of conventional enzymatic glyphosate (Glyp) detection methods, including enzyme environmental sensitivity, high cost, and limited enzyme sources, this study developed a portable paper-based fluorescence platform (Y-R membrane) based on a metal-organic framework (MOF)-driven fluorescence regulation mechanism for non-enzymatic and rapid detection of Glyp. This platform was constructed by immobilizing MnMOF and yellow carbon dots (Y-CDs) on a polyvinylidene fluoride membrane. The ZrOx-OH derived from alkaline-treated UiO-66 regulated the Mn 3+ /Mn 2+ redox reactions through its surface hydroxyl groups, triggering the red fluorescence of MnMOF. Glyp detection was achieved via competitive binding of its carboxyl groups to ZrOx-OH hydroxyls, inhibiting the redox process and inducing concentration-dependent fluorescence quenching. Coupled with RGB analysis, this platform exhibited excellent linearity (R 2  = 0.993) within 0.1–100 μg/mL range, with a detection limit of 0.06 μg/mL. The standard addition experiments demonstrated Glyp detection recoveries of 96.0 %∼103.4 % in tea samples, completing detection within 15 min. This platform enabled rapid, accurate and visual screening of Glyp residues without needing enzymatic reactions or sophisticated instruments. With its advantages of operational simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and intuitive readout, this system offered a novel competitive reaction-based sensing strategy for on-site rapid screening of Glyp in agricultural products.
