To address the limited functionality of pure Hydroxyapatite (HA), cerium-doped hydroxyapatite (Ce-HA) with different Ce contents was synthesized by a hydrothermal method, and Ce-HA/PPy composites were further prepared by in situ polymerization of pyrrole. The crystal structure, micromorphology, and surface chemical properties of the materials were analyzed. Their photothermal performance, in vitro ion release behavior, and antibacterial properties were systematically studied. Ce was introduced into the HA lattice in mixed valence states (Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ ), and PPy formed a continuous surface-associated coating on Ce-HA, yielding a stable composite structure. The Ce-HA/PPy composite containing 1.0 mol% Ce exhibited the most favorable photothermal properties. This optimal performance was demonstrated by a photothermal conversion efficiency of 37.6% and good stability when irradiated with an 808 nm laser at 2 W/cm 2 The composite material exhibited antibacterial rates of up to 95.26% and 93.59% toward Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ), respectively, under laser irradiation, and its antibacterial mechanism stems from the synergistic effect between the high photothermal conversion efficiency of PPy and Ce ions. The release amount of Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ ions from the composite material is within the physiological safety range. The Ce-HA/PPy composite developed in this study exhibits promising photothermal antibacterial performance and potential for biomedical photothermal antibacterial applications.

Polylactic acid (PLA) is an excellent smart material with favorable mechanical properties and shape memory behavior, along with low cost and broad applicability. However, its relatively high deformation temperature and poor toughness limit its application in implantable medical devices. The PLA/TPU/HA blend was prepared via physical blending to reduce the glass transition temperature ( T g ) of PLA and to enhance its shape memory performance and mechanical properties. Experimental results revealed that the addition of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and hydroxyapatite (HA) reduced the T g by 7.16 ℃, improved the tensile strength by 15 MPa, and achieved a shape recovery rate of 94.1%, representing an improvement of over 10% compared to neat PLA. Furthermore, by adjusting the mixing ratios, the blends exhibited controllable deformation behavior, thus expanding their potential for biomedical applications.

Hydroxyapatite (HA) ceramics have promising applications in various fields, such as medical and waste treatment. However, traditional high-temperature sintering methods suffer from issues like element volatilization and performance degradation. Additionally, HA ceramics prepared using the cold sintering process (CSP), a low-temperature processing technique, often exhibit low density and poor mechanical properties. In this work, HA ceramics were reinforced with 35 mol% SiO 2 . The SiO 2 -HA glass-ceramic, fabricated at 250 °C under 750 MPa pressure with 35 wt% deionized water via CSP, exhibits a high relative density of 92.4 %, a relatively high Vickers hardness of 5.4 GPa, a fracture toughness of 0.62 MPa m 1/2 , and a high compressive strength of 602 MPa. The hardness value of the glass-ceramic is significantly higher than those of HA ceramics prepared by CSP and is comparable to those of well-sintered HA ceramics via conventional high-temperature sintering. Additionally, we summarize the CSP densification mechanism of SiO 2 -HA glass-ceramics, which includes the dissolution-reprecipitation and plastic deformation of SiO 2 and HA, as well as the fracture and rearrangement of HA nanorods.

In this study, hydroxyapatite (HAp)-coated-limestone was prepared using waste limestone and diammonium hydrogen phosphate. Some factors have been investigated affecting the uptake behavior, such as phosphate addition times, preparation time, contact time, pH, temperature and copper ion concentration to optimize the conditions for maximum adsorption. Kinetic model, adsorption isotherm and thermodynamic parameters such as entropy change, enthalpy change and Gibbs free energy were calculated. The results showed that the adsorption capacity of HAp-coated-limestone is gradually increasing with the increase of phosphate addition times. The adsorption capacity of HAp-coated-limestone (1D + 1P, 2D + 2P, 3D + 3P, 4D + 4P) was 68.6, 72.1, 83.5 and 92.4 mg/g at 60 min, respectively. Adsorption process of copper ions on HAp-coated-limestone is in accordance with the second-order adsorption mechanics, and the adsorption isotherm indicated that the adsorption model was close to the Langmuir model. Thermodynamic parameters showed that adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic. Both crystal form and coverage of limestone affected the specific surface of HAp-coated-limestone. Besides, the preparation cost was low and performance of adsorption was good.

Cartilage damage is difficult to heal and poses a serious problem to human health as it can lead to osteoarthritis. In this work, we explore the application of biological 3D printing to manufacture new cartilage scaffolds to promote cartilage regeneration. The hydrogel made by mixing sodium alginate (SA) and gelatin (GA) has high biocompatibility, but its mechanical properties are poor. The addition of hydroxyapatite (HA) can enhance its mechanical properties. In this paper, the preparation scheme of the SA-GA-HA composite hydrogel cartilage scaffold was explored, the scaffolds prepared with different concentrations were compared, and better formulations were obtained for printing and testing. Mathematical modeling of the printing process of the bracket, simulation analysis of the printing process based on the mathematical model, and adjustment of actual printing parameters based on the results of the simulation were performed. The cartilage scaffold, which was printed using Bioplotter 3D printer, exhibited useful mechanical properties suitable for practical needs. In addition, ATDC-5 cells were seeded on the cartilage scaffolds and the cell survival rate was found to be higher after one week. The findings demonstrated that the fabricated chondrocyte scaffolds had better mechanical properties and biocompatibility, providing a new scaffold strategy for cartilage tissue regeneration.Keywords:3D bioprinting;additive manufacturing;cartilage regeneration;cartilage tissue engineering scaffold;finite element method

As clinical demand for enhanced osseous repair implants continues to increase, ceramic-based composites have attracted widespread attention owing to their superior mechanical properties and excellent biocompatibility. Hydroxyapatite (HA), although an ideal biocompatible matrix material, is limited by insufficient mechanical strength and the absence of piezoelectric activity, restricting its application in load-bearing bone repair. To address these limitations, digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing technology was used in this study to fabricate piezoelectrically active hydroxyapatite–barium titanate (HA–BT) nanocomposite scaffolds. A systematic investigation was conducted to examine the phase composition, microstructure, mechanical performance, piezoelectric properties, dielectric behavior, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility of HA–BT specimens with varying ratios. The results demonstrated that, compared to pure HA, the 60 wt% BT composite scaffold exhibited significantly enhanced properties, including a compressive strength of 106.67 MPa (a 194 % increase over that of pure HA), a density of 91.43 %, a piezoelectric constant d 33 of 6.34 pC/N, a dielectric constant ε r of 93.6, and a corrosion current density of 7.1779 × 10 −5 A/cm 2 . In addition, the scaffold exhibited favorable cellular proliferation. The key performance metrics of this composite closely matched those of human bone, providing valuable insights into the design and fabrication of high-precision, high-performance artificial bone-repair constructs.

Daminozide (DMNZD) has been found to be an important ozone-reactive N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) precursor; however, the influence of humic acid (HA) on NDMA formation from daminozide during ozonation is unclear. In this study, the impacts of HA on NDMA formation from daminozide at various oxidation conditions (ozone dosages, pH) and other water components (bicarbonate ion (HCO3−), sulfate ion (SO42−)) were investigated. In addition, its implications for water treatment plants are discussed. The results indicated that low levels of HA (≤0.6 mg L−1) facilitated NDMA formation and its molar yield was maximized at 0.1 mg L−1 HA (8.5%), while a high concentration of HA (>0.6 mg L−1) had an inhibition role. The NDMA amount increased with increasing pH and showed a peak at pH 8. With 0.1 mg L−1 HA, NDMA was raised from 3.0% to 23.1% with ozone increasing from 0.5 to 4 mg L−1; HCO3− competed with daminozide for ozone and cut down NDMA formation, whereby 160 μM HCO3− reduced NDMA conversion from 8.5% to 6.5%; however, with the increase in SO42− from 0 to 20 μM, NDMA conversion was augmented from 8.5% to 17.8%. Based on the results of LC/MS/MS and GC/MS analyses, NDMA transformation pathways with/without HA are proposed.

Current bone repair materials struggle to integrate mechanical support, bioactivity, and antibacterial function, particularly those capable of mimicking the multiscale structure and regulating the local ionic microenvironment of natural bone. Herein, a biomimetic multilevel composite hydrogel based on a natural luffa sponge (LS) was constructed by combining a Zn2+-coordinated LS framework (Zn-WLS) with a hydroxyapatite-reinforced poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel (HA-PVA). The Zn-WLS/HA-PVA composite hydrogel exhibited substantially enhanced mechanical properties: a compressive strength of 4.2 MPa and a Young’s modulus of 14.9 MPa at 70% strain, representing approximately 10-fold and 300-fold increases over the pure HA-PVA hydrogel, respectively. It also demonstrated high fatigue resistance and strain-responsive energy dissipation with an energy dissipation density of 23.23 kJ·m–3. In simulated body fluid, the composite hydrogel enabled relatively controlled Zn2+ release and active Ca2+ uptake, rapidly inducing the formation of a bioactive bone-like calcium-deficient apatite layer (Ca/P ≈ 1.5) on its surface. In vitro biological evaluations confirmed negligible cytotoxicity toward MC3T3-E1 preosteoblasts, significantly enhanced early osteogenic differentiation, further promoted matrix mineralization and collagen deposition at the late stage of osteogenesis, and markedly upregulated the osteogenesis-associated genes Runx2, ALP, COL, and OCN, and high broad-spectrum antibacterial efficacy against both Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) (>98.5% inhibition). Through a “molecular-nano-micro-macro” multiscale synergistic strategy, this work successfully fabricates a cellulose-based composite hydrogel that integrates high strength, controllable ion exchange, osteogenesis promotion, and antibacterial function, offering a promising design strategy for bone repair scaffolds with integrated mechanical and biological functions.

The fabrication of composites with nacre-like structures through the ordered integration of ceramics and organic components represents an effective approach to developing high strength and toughness bone implant materials. Traditional preparation methods typically involve high-temperature sintering followed by the infiltration of organic substances. While these methods can achieve high strength, the uniformity and depth of organic substance penetration into the ceramic matrix were constrained by pore size, leading to an uneven distribution. Additionally, the interface bonding between the organic and ceramics was limited to physical bonding, which restricts the enhancement of fracture toughness. In this study, nacre-mimetic hydroxyapatite (HA)-Calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 )/sodium alginate (SA) layered composites were fabricated utilizing a combination of roll rolling and the sinterless characteristics of calcium phosphate bone cement (CPC). The SA contains oxygen groups that form bonds with Ca 2+ in the HA layer. The bending strength of nacre-mimetic HA-CaCO 3 /SA layered composites can achieve 9.04 MPa, which was comparable to that of human trabecular bone. Repeated roll rolling lead to a lamellar dispersion of SA in the composite, with an average thickness of 0.19 μm. The fracture toughness of the layered composite was 13.89 MPa m 1/2 , which was higher than that of cortical bone due to deflection extension path of the crack under bending stress, crack passivation, crack bifurcation and crack bridging. The layered composites exhibit excellent biocompatibility, promoting the proliferation and adhesion of osteoblasts. This characteristic was crucial for developing bone implant materials that match both the mechanical and biological properties of human bones.

Purpose The main cause of aseptic inflammation after an in vivo implantation is that Poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) and Poly(D-lactide) have a slower degradation and absorption rate, while Poly(D, L-lactide) (PDLLA) has a much faster degradation rate than PLLA because of its amorphous structure. Also, the hydrolyzate of Hydroxyapatite (HA) is alkaline, which can neutralize local tissue peracid caused by hydrolysis of Polylactic acid. Design/methodology/approach In this study, the selective laser sintering (SLS) technique was chosen to prepare bone scaffolds using nano-HA/PDLLA composite microspheres, which were prepared by the solid-in-oil-in-water (S/O/W) method. First, the SLS parameters range of bulk was determined by the result of a single-layer experiment and the optimized parameters were then obtained by the orthogonal experiment. The tensile property, hydrophobicity, biocompatibility, biological toxicity and in vitro degradation of the samples with optimized SLS parameters were characterized. Findings As a result, the samples showed a lower tensile strength because of the many holes in their interior, which was conducive to better cell adhesion and nutrient transport. In addition, the samples retained their inherent properties after SLS and the hydrophobicity was improved after adding nano-HA because of the OH group. Furthermore, the samples showed good biocompatibility with the large number of cells adhering to the material through pseudopods and there was no significant difference between the pure PDLLA and 10% HA/PDLLA in terms of biological toxicity. Finally, the degradation rate of the composites could be tailored by the amount of nano-HA. Originality/value This study combined the S/O/W and SLS technique and provides a theoretical future basis for the preparation of drug-loaded microsphere scaffolds through SLS using HA/PDLLA composites.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing technology has attracted considerable focus for preparing porous bone repair scaffolds to promote bone regeneration. Inspired by organic-inorganic components and the porous structure of natural bone, novel porous degradable scaffolds have been printed using hydroxyapatite (HA), carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS), and polydopamine (PDA). The well-designed HA/CMCS/PDA scaffolds exhibited a porous structure with 60.5 ± 4.6% porosity and 415 ± 87 μm in mode pore diameter. The weight loss percentage (WL%) of the HA/CMCS/PDA scaffolds reached about 17% during a 10-week degradation in vitro . The degradation process between the CMCS and HA induced the release of calcium ions. Using commercial product as the contrast material, the osteogenic properties of the scaffolds were assessed in vivo . The implantation and degradation of HA/CMCS/PDA scaffolds had no adverse effects on the kidney and liver of rabbits with no inflammatory response in the implantation sites. The micro-CT and histology data suggested that the HA/CMCS/PDA scaffolds could effectively stimulate new bone formation within the femoral lacuna defect region of rabbits versus blank control at 12 weeks after implantation. Surface cortical bone was generated in the defect area in the HA/CMCS/PDA group; the defect in the blank group remained obvious. HA/CMCS/PDA scaffolds had excellent biodegradability matching the formation of new bone during implantation. In conclusion, 3D-printed HA/CMCS/PDA scaffolds have remarkable potential as a new material for repairing bone defects.

The trinary hydroxyapatite@Fe 3 O 4 @N-doped carbon dots (HA@Fe 3 O 4 @N-CDs) hybrids were prepared by one-pot hydrothermal approach and utilized to detect and remove lead ion from aqueous solution. The structures and morphologies of as-obtained nanorod-like HA@Fe 3 O 4 @N-CDs hybrids were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. These HA@Fe 3 O 4 @N-CDs hybrids possess good magnetism by magnetic hysteresis test and multi-colored fluorescence by the CLSM measurement. Furthermore, the as-obtained hybrids display excellent biocompatibility by MTT assay. Importantly, the trinary magnetic HA@Fe 3 O 4 @N-CDs hybrids as a green detector and adsorbent of Pb 2+ were investigated. The influence of the different pH, the concentration of heavy metal, and the maximum adsorption capacity on removal efficiency was measured in detail. The maximum Pb 2+ adsorption capacity on HA@Fe 3 O 4 @N-CDs hybrids is 450 mg/g. The kinetic mechanism was a pseudo-second order model, and the isotherm data was fitted well by the Langmuir isotherm and Freundlich model. Hence, the nanorod-like HA@Fe 3 O 4 @N-CDs hybrids could be a multifunctional material with significant potential applications in heavy metal detection and adsorption, bone tissue regeneration, magnetic therapy, and biomedicine. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
