Developing cost-effective and efficient hydrogen/oxygen evolution reaction (HER/OER) electrocatalysts that can work stably at industrial-level current densities is of paramount importance for the scalable implementation of water electrolysis. Herein, a monolithic chainmail electrode is fabricated by embedding self-phosphorized graphitic carbon-encapsulated Co2P nanoparticles within a hierarchically porous carbon membrane matrix (Co2P@CTF) via the direct carbonization of a Co2+-cross-coupled soybean protein framework. While formulating the soybean protein framework into a hierarchically porous, mechanically strong, and conductive carbon membrane, the endogenous N and P sources enable the heteroatom doping of the carbon matrix while simultaneously yielding graphitic carbon-encapsulated Co2P nanoparticles. Such an integrated Co2P@CTF monolithic electrode exhibits remarkable alkaline water splitting performance with low overpotentials of 177.5 and 388.4 mV at 100 mA cm−2 for the HER and OER, respectively, with excellent stability for the HER even at 1000 mA cm−2 over 100 h and for the OER at 100 mA cm−2 for >50 h. An electrolyzer assembled using Co2P@CTF requires a cell voltage of 1.69 V at 10 mA cm−2 with a high solar-to-hydrogen (STH) conversion efficiency of 16.8% when powered using a commercial silicon solar cell. This work opens a new avenue for scalable fabrication of monolithic chainmail electrodes with desirable functionalities for sustainable electrochemical energy conversion.

Electrochemical water splitting is considered a sustainable route for the hydrogen industry. In this work, Mo 2 C/MoC heterostructure supported on N -doped carbon (Mo 2 C/MoC@NC) was prepared via a carbonization strategy. For the product (Mo 2 C/MoC@NC-1-2) fabricated with a g-C 3 N 4 / ammonium molybdate tetrahydrate molar ratio of 1:2 at 700 °C under 10%CH 4 /H 2 atmosphere, a high stability and good HER activity with a η 10 of 113 mV in 1M KOH were achieved. To further enhance the catalytic performance of the synthesized Mo 2 C/MoC@NC, the phosphating strategy was proposed for the preparation of Mo 2 C/MoC/MoP heterostructure supported on N-doped carbon (Mo 2 C/MoC/MoP@NC). When the precursor Mo 2 C/MoC@NC-1-2 was phosphated at 650 °C with a heating rate of 5 °C min −1 and kept for 0 min, the as-synthesized Mo 2 C/MoC/MoP@NC-650-0 exhibits good HER catalytic activity with a pretty low η 10 of 78 mV, a j 0 of 0.398 mA cm −2 , and a Tafel slope of 52 mV dec −1 in 1M KOH. This good activity of HER can be ascribed to the N-doped carbon as substrate and the construction of transition metal-based heterostructures.

Developing highly-efficient and stable Pt-based catalysts towards alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) offers a promising strategy for future renewable energy. In this work, radio-frequency (RF) cold plasma-prepared N-doped MWCNTs were adopted to support Pt nanoparticles (NPs) (Pt/NCNTs) via pretreating MWCNTs with RF nitrogen plasma and combining with traditional thermal reduction method. The as-synthesized Pt/NCNT featured an ultra-small size of Pt NPs (1.5 nm) and plentiful doped nitrogen, exhibiting ultra-low overpotential of 28 mV@10 mA cm −2 and ultra-high mass activity of 3.2 A mg Pt −1 @100 mA in 1 M KOH solution, which are superior to those of commercial 20 wt% Pt/C catalyst. This is because RF plasma can realize fast, high-efficient and specific N-doping structure of MWCNTs. The lone electron pairs of N species (mainly pyri-N and pyrr-N) on MWCNTs surface transfer to the empty orbitals of Pt NPs, forming a strong coordination effect between Pt and nitrogen, thereby boosting the alkaline HER catalytic performance.

The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is critical for sustainable hydrogen production via water splitting. High-entropy alloys (HEAs) have emerged as promising catalysts due to their tunable electronic properties and compositional diversity. While numerous methods exist for synthesizing HEAs, systematic comparisons of these approaches are lacking, and the mechanistic role of support surface engineering in regulating catalytic performance remains underexplored. In this study, three synthesis methods—fast-moving bed heating (FH), carbothermal shock (CTS), and slow heating (SH)—were compared to fabricate HEA nanoparticles on CNTs. The FH method, leveraging its dynamic temperature gradient and ultrafast heating rate, achieved rapid synthesis of highly dispersed HEA nanoparticles with suppressed aggregation. Based on FH method, nitrogen doping via NH 3 calcination further tailored the electronic structure and active-site distribution of CNTs, significantly enhancing HER activity. The optimized FeCoNiMnZn/N-CNTs prepared by FH achieved an overpotential of 184 mV at 10 mA/cm². Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that nitrogen incorporation induces near-ideal hydrogen adsorption free energy (ΔG H⁎ ), accelerating H adsorption/desorption kinetics. This work not only advances the rational selection of synthesis protocols for HEA catalysts but also underscores the transformative potential of support surface engineering in optimizing catalytic behavior for clean energy technologies.

With the development of the economy, energy shortages and the greenhouse effect gradually become problems facing humanity. Hydrogen energy is clean energy and is expected to become the most vital low-carbon energy in the future. At present, industrial hydrogen production mainly uses precious metals such as Pt. Therefore, it is of great significance to design a low-cost hydrogen evolution catalyst comparable in terms of hydrogen production performance and stability. In this work, porous Co3O4 with a hollow structure was prepared using the MOF template method, and VS2 nanosheets were uniformly attached and grown hydrothermally on it, thereby constructing a unique morphology of TS-Co3O4@VS2. The test results show that the catalyst can achieve a hydrogen evolution overpotential as low as 175.29 mV and a low Tafel slope (57.0 mV dec−1) and can work stably for 500 cycles at a current density of 100 mA cm−2 without noticeable performance degradation. Compared with other similar materials, this material significantly improves the kinetic process of the HER, reduces the reaction energy barrier for hydrogen evolution, and improves the operational stability of the catalyst. We believe that this material can provide a reference for the design of transition metal disulfide catalysts.

Water dissociation, hydrogen adsorption and hydrogen desorption are three important processes for the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline solution. According to the previous report that V–O species can promote the dissociation of water in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), we wondered if introduction of V–O species to hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalyst could also enhance water dissociation, and consequently improve the HER performance. To check this assumption, novel Ni/V 2 O 3 composite was prepared. The obtained electrode exhibits excellent performance including much lower overpotential (44 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ) and Tafel slope value (38 mV dec −1 ) compared to pure Ni and V 2 O 3 electrodes. In addition, the performance of Ni/V 2 O 3 is comparable to commercial Pt/C electrode. V 2 O 3 was proved to increase the Electrochemical Active Surface Area (ECSA) of Ni/V 2 O 3 , which is an important reason for the increased HER performance of Ni/V 2 O 3 . Besides that, according to the combined results of Temperature-Programed Reduction (TPR) measurement, CO 2 Adsorption, Contact Angle test and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation, it is believed that introduction of V 2 O 3 can promote the process of water dissociation as expected, as well as the hydrogen adsorption-desorption, and bubble separation, all of which together improves the HER performance of non-noble metal Ni.

Sepiolite converted into hierarchical porous carbon. • Ru nanoparticles anchored via C-O-Ru bonds. • 38 mV overpotential at 10 mA cm −2 . • SMSI tunes Ru electronic structure. • DFT confirms optimal ΔGH and adsorption. Ruthenium metal has been widely utilized as an efficient catalyst for hydrogen production electrocatalytic water splitting. However, its high cost and low atomic utilization efficiency are regarded as significant limitations for practical applications. In this study, Ru nanoparticles with sizes ranging from 2 to 10 nm were grown in situ onto the modified surface of sepiolite, a cheap mineral with limited electrical conductivity, via a low-cost synthetic strategy under mild conditions. The novelly synthesized catalyst shows a specific surface area of 422.1 m 2 /g with a pore volume of 0.213 cm 3 /g, and the multi-level pore structure of carbonized modified sepiolite is maintained. XPS and FTIR results indicate that abundant C-O-Ru functional groups. The synthesized composite exhibits excellent HER performance in acidic electrolytes, with an overpotential of 38 mV (at 10 mA/cm 2 current density), even lower than commercial platinum–carbon catalysts (39 mV). And stability of the catalyst is maintained after a 50-hour cycle, with a high-frequency region of the Nyquist diagram and minimal impedance arc diameter. Theoretical calculations also demonstrate that the synthesized catalyst exhibits considerable water adsorption capability (−0.925 eV) while maintaining a near-optimal ΔG H* value (−0.14 eV), which is favor of the Volmer step and efficient hydrogen desorption. The development of efficient and durable non-precious metal catalysts is pivotal for advancing clean energy technologies. In this study, a phosphorus-doped cobalt-molybdenum-based composite micrometer arrays (CoP@MMoO 4 , M = Ni, Fe) were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal and phosphatization strategy. Unlike conventional approaches, the designed phosphatization process not only introduces phosphorus doping but also modulates the material’s microstructure and electronic properties, significantly enhancing the binding energy of active site. The optimized micrometer arrays facilitate effective electron transfer for excellent electrocatalytic performance. Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the enhancement of intrinsic activity for micrometer arrays is attributed to the improved electrical conductivity and the strong interaction between O radical and P/Co. The optimized CoP@NiMoO 4 exhibits exceptional catalytic performance, with a low overpotential of 70.97 mV for HER and 204 mV for OER at 10 mA cm −2 , along with remarkable stability over 24 h. These findings highlight the pivotal role of phosphorus in engineering cobalt-molybdenum composites, offering a novel pathway for designing high-performance electrocatalysts for efficient HER and OER.

Noble metals offer a wide range of potential catalysis applications, particularly in fuel cells and supercapacitors. The decoration strategy is a promising efficient strategy to address the limited structural flexibility and enhance the performance of noble metal electrode materials. Herein, we report a facile method to synthesize the nanocomposites with Pt nanoclusters (NCs) decorated on the surface of 2H-MoS2 nanosheets (Pt NCs@2H-MoS2). Fortunately, Pt NCs@2H-MoS2 demonstrates excellent catalytic activity and stability toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline solutions, along with satisfactory electrochemical characteristics for supercapacitors (SCs). Specifically, a low overpotential of 61.2 mV at 10 A g–1 and 98% retention after 10 h can be achieved for the HER, which is comparable to the commercial Pt/C catalysts. When used as electrode materials for supercapacitors, a high specific capacitance of 284 F g–1 can be achieved at a scan rate of 5 mV s–1 in 1 M KOH. Consequently, these results demonstrate that the noble metal-decorated transition metal materials strategy offers significant potential for economically and sustainably electrochemical applications.

The escalating global energy crisis has intensified research efforts toward developing heterogeneous structures capable of addressing the sluggish kinetics of the hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction in electrocatalysis. In this study, a novel strategy for the design of highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts was proposed. Uniform Ni nanolayers were successfully deposited on Nb 2 CT x /CNT hybrid supports through a combination of CVD and magnetron sputtering techniques. The resulting Ni/Nb 2 CT x /CNT@NF catalyst demonstrated exceptional electrocatalytic performance in 1 M KOH. For HER, it achieved remarkably low overpotentials of 41 mV@10 mA cm −2 and 196 mV@100 mA cm −2 . Similarly, for OER, the catalyst exhibited outstanding activity with overpotentials of 299 mV@20 mA cm −2 and 337 mV@50 mA cm −2 . Furthermore, the catalyst maintained stable performance at 20 mA cm −2 for 48 h without significant degradation, highlighting its excellent long-term stability. The superior catalytic performance can be attributed to several key factors: (1) The uniform distribution of Ni nanolayers enhances intrinsic conductivity and increases the density of active sites; (2) The incorporation of CNTs expands the reaction interface, facilitating charge and mass transfer; and (3) The electronic interaction between Nb 2 CT x and Ni further optimizes the catalytic kinetics.

Hyperbranched transition metal phosphides (TMPs) nanocrystals are an interesting class of materials, which can be used as an efficient catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, big challenge remains for the preparation of ternary hyperbranched TMPs, and relationship between their HER performances and the splitting degree is also not well understood. Here, hyperbranched Co-Ni-P nanocrystals with different splitting degrees were prepared via a novel strategy, and their alkaline HER performances were studied. During the synthesis process, hyperbranched Co 2 P nanocrystals were used as template, and Ni precursors were injected into the reaction solution at different holding stage. When the Ni precursor was injected earlier, the podgy particles with low splitting degree would be obtained. Conversely, delaying the injection of Ni precursor would lead to high splitting degree. The formation process of ternary phase was also studied. After Ni precursor was injected, a Co-Ni-P amorphous layer was formed on the surface of the Co 2 P particles, and then the Ni atoms diffused into the Co 2 P phase to form Co-Ni-P nanocrystals. Electrochemical performances tests show that the splitting degree has great impact on HER performances. The higher splitting degree usually leads to larger electrochemical surface area, and higher catalytic activity can be achieved. The sheaf-like Co-Ni-P nanocrystals demonstrate a small overpotential of 119 mV at current density of 10 mA cm −2 , and good durability over 23 h in 1 M KOH solution. We believe that this work can help understand the relationship between the HER performances of hyperbranched TMPs nanocrystals and their splitting degree, and provide a synthetic strategy for the preparation of highly efficient TMPs catalysts.
