Aerobic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a promising alternative route to produce renewable biodegradable plastics, which has stimulated intense interest in recent years. Supported gold catalysts have shown great potential for this reaction, but the selectivity and stability need to be improved. In addition, the requirement for base additives makes the process less effective and sustainable. Herein, highly active and selective Au–Ag bimetallic nanoclusters supported on MgAl-hydrotalcite (HT) were developed for HMF oxidation to FDCA under base-free reaction conditions using molecular oxygen as the oxidant. The presence of small amounts of Ag (0.034–0.065 wt%) in Au25 clusters greatly enhanced the catalytic reaction rates and selectivity for HMF tandem oxidative steps, leading to both high conversion of HMF (>97%) and high yield of FDCA (>95%). Besides, the catalyst stability was also enhanced by the addition of Ag. The characterization results suggested that the substitution of Ag atoms modified the electronic structure of Au while likely maintaining the primary geometry. Thus, a significant synergistic effect could be observed over trace Ag modified Au–Ag bimetallic nanoclusters. The present work provides new insight into the alloying effect, and helps understand highly efficient Au-based catalysts for aerobic oxidation of biomass derived molecules under base-free conditions.

It is highly desirable to develop a heterogeneous catalyst that is both efficient and recyclable for the simultaneous acquisition of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and furfural from lignocellulose feedstock. Herein, a series of (x)SnCl2-PTA/β catalysts (x = 10, 15, 20, and 25 wt %) were prepared and characterized using ICP-AES, XRD, SEM, N2 adsorption–desorption, XPS, NH3-TPD, and Py-FTIR techniques. It was found that (20)SnCl2-PTA/β catalyst having a suitable acid density, acid ratio, and texture structure contributed to the furan compound formation from carbohydrate components of wheat straw. Under optimal conditions, up to 71% of furfural and 30% of HMF were simultaneously obtained from wheat straw in a water/tetrahydrofuran biphasic system, while the byproducts formed were identified as soluble C4–C15 molecules and insoluble humins. More importantly, the (20)SnCl2-PTA/β catalyst was still capable of providing moderate furan compounds yields after four cycles, and its catalytic performance could be partially restored by simple reimpregnation.

Surfactant-assisted synthesis regulates Zn 2+ vacancies in Zn 2 In 2 S 5 for selective HMF oxidation. • Unsaturated Zn sites enhance charge separation and O 2 activation in photocatalytic biomass conversion. MIL-derived ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheet network synthesized via MOF templating. Photocatalytic conversion of biomass into value-added chemicals constitutes a promising green and sustainable approach for carbon-neutral resource utilization. Defect engineering has been widely recognized as an effective strategy to modulate the electronic structure and surface redox properties of semiconductor photocatalysts, thereby boosting their catalytic performance. Herein, we report a one-pot hydrothermal synthesis protocol that enables the generation of Zn vacancies on the surface of Zn 2 In 2 S 5 (ZIS) via the introduction of different surfactants, affording a cost-effective and scalable modification strategy. The optimal catalyst, denoted as Z V IS-1, which is rich in Zn 2+ vacancies, exhibits exceptional performance in the visible-light-driven aerobic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF). Specifically, Z V IS-1 achieves an HMF conversion of 72.2% and a DFF yield of 65.9% under optimized reaction conditions, corresponding to a 4.0-fold enhancement compared to pristine ZIS (16.5% DFF yield). The DFF formation rate over Z V IS-1 reaches 2108 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 , which is among the highest values reported for sulfide-based photocatalysts in this reaction system. Comprehensive characterization and mechanistic studies reveal that the introduced Zn 2+ vacancies not only promote the separation and migration of photogenerated charge carriers, but also serve as active sites for O 2 activation and HMF adsorption, effectively mitigating the intrinsic limitation of insufficient surface reactivity of pristine ZIS. This work provides new insights into the rational design of defect-engineered semiconductor photocatalysts for efficient and sustainable biomass valorization. Zn-vacancy-engineered Zn 2 In 2 S 5 nanoflowers achieve selective photocatalytic oxidation of HMF to DFF with enhanced charge separation and oxygen activation capability. Chronic administration of glucocorticoids are being linked to an increased risk of osteoporosis. 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) is a natural compound that possesses various biological activities, including osteogenic regulation. In this research, we sought to investigate the potential of 5-HMF to exert protective effects against glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis. In cellular investigations, we deployed Western Blot (WB), Real-Time Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and Alizarin S-red (ARS) staining to scrutinize the expression of osteogenic differentiation markers within MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblasts and BMSCs. We used dexamethasone to establish a mouse model for glucocorticoid-Induced osteoporosis and administered 5-HMF to evaluate its influence on bone density and architecture through the use of micro-CT and histological analysis. In addition, we employed network pharmacology to elucidate the potential pathways and targets of 5-HMF. Finally, we explored the effect of AKT knockout on the treatment of 5-HMF. We found that 5-HMF significantly enhanced VEGFR2 phosphorylation, reestablishing angiogenesis and activating the PI3K/AKT pathway in vitro and in vivo. 5-HMF also inhibited Dexamethasone -induced apoptosis by regulating Bax and Bcl-2 expression. MK2206, an AKT inhibitor, abrogated 5-HMF’s protective properties against GCs. These results indicate that 5-HMF counteracts the negative effects of GCs on osteoblasts and has good bone-promoting differentiation effects.

An efficient and selective production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from carbohydrates is achieved in the presence of mesoporous AlSiO catalysts in a THF/H2O–NaCl biphasic system. These mesoporous AlSiO catalysts are prepared by a facile sol–gel method and have tunable acidity. Their acidic sites are characterized and quantified by NH3-TPD, microcalorimetry of NH3 adsorption and Py-FTIR, then correlated with the catalytic isomerization and dehydration of glucose to HMF. The detailed studies show that the AlSiO-20 catalyst with a Si/Al ratio of 18 is favorable for HMF production due to its inherently high surface area, high amounts of acid sites and a suitable Brønsted/Lewis acid ratio. Over the AlSiO-20 catalyst, an HMF yield of 63.1% is obtained at 160 °C for 1.5 h in the biphasic THF/H2O–NaCl medium with 10 wt% glucose in water. Further conducting the amplification experiment 30 times, the HMF yield still reaches 60.2% and the yield has no obvious decline after four catalytic cycles; this is the best result for an amplification experiment of HMF from glucose over a heterogeneous catalyst so far. After separation, HMF can be used for the production of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) and as high as 95% FDCA yield is obtained over the Pt/C catalyst. Furthermore, the AlSiO catalyst demonstrates excellent activity in the conversion of disaccharides, polysaccharides and even lignocellulosic biomass, indicating it would be a promising catalyst for the conversion of glucose and glucose-based carbohydrates to HMF in industry applications.

Electrochemical oxidation is a promising method to convert 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) with high selectivity at room temperature. Developing catalysts with high current densities is crucial for the industrial application of HMF electrooxidation reaction (HMFOR). Herein, we demonstrate that the current densities exhibited by the LSV curves are falsely high and propose to evaluate catalyst activity using anodic peak current density rather than overpotential for the comparison of actual efficiency. Besides, the reduction of Ni 3+ to Ni 2+ accompanied by proton coupled electron transfer (PCET) process of HMF dehydrogenation is confirmed as the rate-determining step affecting the conversion efficiency of HMF rather than Ni 2+ electrooxidated to Ni 3+ . Theoretical calculations reveal differences in the hydrogen transfer energy barriers of PCET process. Furthermore, Ni(OH) 2 /NF with appropriate Cr doping shows superb activity with actual current densities of over 230 mA cm −2 at HMF concentrations of 10 mM and over 360 mA cm −2 at 20 mM (the ever highest current densities for HMFOR), and obtain a yield of more than 98% of FDCA.

Electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF) is regarded as a green synthesis strategy for generating high quality bio-based chemicals. However, simultaneously regulating both the hydrogen (H) coverage and the adsorption behavior of HMF presents a significant challenge, particularly in unraveling the intricate structure–activity relationship and achieving a selective target product. Here, we enhance the availability of hydrogen (H*) and modulate surface electronic interactions with 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to facilitate selective electrochemical hydrogenation (ECH) of HMF by introducing palladium as an auxiliary component. Pd–Cu dual sites synergistically enhanced H* supply and HMF activation while suppressing the competing hydrogen evolution reaction. The optimized electrocatalyst exhibits notable catalytic performance, attaining a selectivity of 99.3% and a faradaic efficiency of 97.5% for BHMF at a potential of −1.15 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that Pd doping is crucial for enhancing the adsorption of H* and HMF* intermediates, thereby promoting the hydrogenation of HMF through the Langmuir–Hinshelwood (L–H) mechanism under neutral conditions. This work establishes a catalyst design paradigm where atomic-level dopant engineering regulates multistep protonation kinetics, offering fundamental insights into biomass electrorefining.

A simple hydrothermal carbonization method was used to synthesize sulfonated carbon catalysts from glucose in reflux conditions. The concentration of sulfuric acid played a specific role in preparing sulfonated hydrothermal carbon microsphere (SHCS) and sulfonated hydrothermal carbon (SHC) catalysts. All of the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analyses, and the influence of different reaction conditions on 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) production from fructose was investigated in microwave conditions. The effect of microwave input power and energy efficiency on HMF formation was determined to understand the role of sulfonated carbon catalysts in a water medium. Results showed that the catalyst with a moderate sulfur content and spherical stacking was beneficial to enhance the heat-transfer efficiency on the catalyst surface during microwave-assisted heating, thus effectively enhancing the energy efficiency of the fructose dehydration reaction. The optimum reaction condition for HMF production was obtained at microwave input power 60 W, reaction temperature 186 °C, and reaction time 10 min. At this condition, the HMF yield and the energy efficiency were 88.3 mol % and 0.147 mmol kJ–1, respectively. Furthermore, the prepared catalyst showed good recyclability, wherein a simple reactivation process could rapidly recover the catalyst activity with 1 M sulfuric acid solution. This work provides a way to design a potential microwave-responsive catalyst that improves the energy efficiency and HMF yield for the fructose–HMF conversion process.

A template-assisted approach was employed to synthesize a MOF-on-MOF derived catalyst for the selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) to produce 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). Characterization revealed that the catalyst forms a cobalt–manganese metal oxide composite phase with a hierarchical porous structure and uniformly distributed Co/Mn active sites. The oxygen vacancies work together with the Lewis acid sites to gradually oxidize the hydroxyl and aldehyde groups in 5-HMF. In the context of reaction conditions that have been identified as optimal (140 °C, 6 h, 50 mg catalyst, 5.88 mol L−1 H2O2), the yield of FDCA was 87.55%, accompanied by 5-HMF conversion rate of 98.66%. The catalyst exhibited exceptional cycling stability, sustaining an FDCA yield exceeding 75% across five cycles. Mechanism studies indicate that the Co–Mn bimetallic synergistic effect optimizes the reaction pathway through electron transfer and oxygen species activation, while the microporous structure prolongs the residence time of intermediates through confinement effect, promoting multi-step oxidation. Compared with the single-metal MOFs derived catalysts, this catalyst has significantly improved adsorption performance and oxidation efficiency, providing an efficient solution for the green synthesis of the bio-based polyester monomer FDCA.

Developing efficient and stable electrocatalysts is key to converting 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into the value-added product 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). Herein, a three-dimensional porous nanosheet-structured nickel-molybdenum-copper (NiMoCu) ternary catalyst was constructed on nickel foam via a two-step electrodeposition strategy coupled with alkaline heat treatment. Characterization (XRD, Raman, TEM, XPS) revealed the homogeneous integration of Ni, Mo, and Cu species at the nanoscale, forming multiple heterointerfaces (MoO 3 –CuO/NiOOH). Meanwhile, Cu incorporation refined the MoO 3 crystallite size to 8.2 nm and promoted the in situ formation of amorphous NiOOH containing Ni³⁺ species. Furthermore, the interfacial electron transfer effect optimized charge transport pathways, thereby promoting an efficient HMFOR process. At 1.47 V vs. RHE, this catalyst showed record HMF electrooxidation performance. The HMF conversion was 99%, FDCA selectivity was near 100%, FDCA yield was 98%, and Faradaic efficiency was 98%. After four cycles in a row, the yield dropped by less than 2%. The excellent performance of the NiMoCu catalyst comes from the synergy of its three metals. Ni³⁺ acts as the active center and drives the reaction. Mo 6+ keeps the Ni³⁺ state stable and speeds up charge movement. Cu stops the side oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The OER contribution is under 2%. This work offers a new way to design efficient and stable catalysts for the electrocatalytic conversion of HMF, a key biomass platform compound. Co-production of multi-products is one of the core principles of chemical industry, and it is also an important way to improve the atom economy. Herein, we proposed an approach to co-producing two valuable platform compounds, gluconic acid (GA) and 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF), from sucrose by successive hydrolysis, oxidation and dehydration. In the enzymatic oxidation step, only glucose was oxidized to GA, meanwhile fructose was 100% retained. In the further biphasic dehydration system, only fructose was converted into HMF, whereas GA was maintained with over 95% recovery. After three reactions, the yields of HMF and GA were respectively 42.5% and 48% when the initial feedstock of sucrose was 200 g/L. Two products were easily separated because GA was completely existed in aqueous phase, and HMF was mainly in organic phase. In the whole process, only commercial enzymes and mineral acid were used instead of self-made catalysts.

In this work, we investigated the dehydration of fructose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural using solid catalysts with microwave assistance in dimethyl sulfoxide. Five kinds of solid catalyst ZrO2, WOx/ZrO2, MoOx/ZrO2, SO42−/WOx–ZrO2 and SO42−/MoOx–ZrO2 were prepared and characterized by XRD, UV-DRS, FTIR, XPS, TEM, TPD, BET, and Raman and the surface acid amount was obtained by combining pyridine adsorption and UV spectrometry. The SO42−/WOx–ZrO2 catalyst was found be the most active catalyst, and a fructose conversion of 95.80% with 83.90% 5-HMF yield was obtained at 150 °C in a relatively short reaction time of 5 min. The value of the activation energy was comparable with previous values reported in the literature, implying that SO42−/WOx–ZrO2 was efficient for the dehydration of fructose to 5-HMF and that microwave radiation heating had a remarkable accelerating effect on the fructose conversion.
