Manipulation of bubbles underwater is attracting a wide range of interests due to the immense potential applications for industry, human health, etc. Inspired by superaerophilic legs of the water strider, a unique type of superaerophilic/aerophobic Janus membrane with precisely controllable geometric parameters and morphologies for unidirectional transportation of bubbles underwater is proposed and fabricated by projection micro-stereolithography (P μ SL) based 3D printing technique. The bionic Janus membranes possess different wettability on their two sides, which enables them stable and ultra-fast unidirectional bubbles transportation underwater. The superhydrophobic microholes forbid the water entering them but provide numerous gas channels, which is dominated by the superaerophilic coating (nano-SiO 2 ). Most significantly, we apply our bionic Janus membranes for the ultra-fast removal of hydrogen bubbles adhering to the copper cathode during the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The amazing performance of our 3D printed bionic Janus membranes promises applications in terms of ultra-fast unidirectional gas transportation underwater, such as fast gas–liquid separation, bubble collection, gas removal for chemical reaction, and so on.

ABSTRACT The practical use of solar-driven interfacial evaporation is hampered by high cost, low photothermal conversion efficiency, and poor stability. Herein, a one-dimensional Fe/C constructed photothermal membrane is rationally developed to replace precious metals via the combination of Fe plasmon resonance with carbon molecular thermal vibration. The membrane exhibits excellent light absorbance (95.72%) and water evaporation rate (2.60 kg·m -2 ·h -1 ) leading to photothermal conversion efficiency up to 95.65% under 1 sun illumination. Janus Fe/C membrane with superhydrophobic and hydrophilic structure is further prepared by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coating to improve long-term stability. The evaporation rate can be maintained at over 90% after 80 h illumination for real seawater treatment with metal ion removal efficiency >99%. It also shows high evaporation performance and stability for organic solvents such as IPA, and NMP. Thus, the 1D Fe/C constructed Janus membrane is a promising candidate for energy-saving solar-driven interfacial solvent evaporation including seawater desalination, wastewater treatment, and organic solvent purification.

Membrane distillation technology is an important method for desalination, but it is susceptible to membrane contamination and wetting. In this study, PVDF membrane bottom surface was protected with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-modified nonwoven fabric, and the membrane surface was hydrophilically modified with polymers formed from 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (NVP) and vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) to prepare the Janus membrane with hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces. By peeling off the PDMS-coated nonwoven fabric, part of the PDMS chains were transferred to the bottom surface of the PVDF membrane, which significantly improved the hydrophobicity of the bottom surface, and the hydrophobic contact angle of the membrane reached 152.0°. Since the casting liquid was put into a solidification bath containing hydrophilic modifier for simultaneous phase conversion into film and hydrophilic modification, the PVP-VTES was firmly anchored to the surface of the PVDF membrane through silane coupling, which resulted in excellent superhydrophilic stability of the membrane surface, and the hydrophilic contact angle reached 0°. Finally, the Janus membrane showed excellent performance in the separation of brine in DCMD. The membrane could reach a maximum flux of 43.0 kg·m −2 ·h −1 and a salt rejection rate of 99.9 % in the separation of 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. In the separation of complex salt solution, after three cycles of experiments, the salt rejection effect remained unchanged while the flux was still stable and maintained at 31.2 kg·m −2 ·h −1 . In the separation of 15 wt% NaCl solution, the membrane flux was maintained at 22.9 kg·m −2 ·h −1 after three cycles of experiment, and the salt rejection rate was still at 99.9 %. Therefore, this Janus membrane has high permeated flux and better anti-fouling properties, and it is an effective material for treating complex salt and high salinity wastewater.

Conventional special wettable membranes for the separation of the surfactant-stabilized oil/water emulsions primarily rely on the “size-sieving” mechanism, which enhances efficiency by reducing the pore size, leading to a trade-off between separation flux and efficiency. Inspired by spider silk, we developed a novel Janus membrane (JPSPP) capable of high demulsification capacity and constant separation flux. This membrane combines a superhydrophobic PS@PDMS membrane (PPM) with spindle-knotted structures on a negatively charged superhydrophilic PAN@SAS membrane (PSM) through electrospinning. The synergy of electrostatic force generated by charged surfaces, the Laplace pressure created by spindle-knotted geometry, and the wettability gradient resulting from asymmetric wettability enhance the demulsification capacity. The high and constant separation flux was achieved as Laplace pressure drives rapid coalescence of demulsified oil droplets towards the top of the spindle-knotted structures, facilitating oil detachment and efficient water permeation downward. As a result, the JPSPP membrane achieved a separation efficiency exceeding 99.9 %, with a constant separation flux of up to 1952.27 L m −2 h −1 , representing a 3–4 folds improvement compared to the pure PAN membranes (PM). The separation performance of the JPSPP still maintains excellent separation performance with efficiency above 98.3 % and a slight attenuation in flux after twenty filtration cycles. The research proposes groundbreaking solutions that significantly enhance the demulsification efficiency and maintain a constant separation flux for oil/water emulsions, with the potential to profoundly impact multiple industries including food processing, energy production, and the petroleum industry, etc.

The Janus membranes with asymmetric wettability can gate oil or water transport spontaneously and directionally to facilitate the liquids transport for oil/water emulsions separation without extra energy consumption, which have attracted wide attention. However, this single-functioned either oil or water removal Janus membranes can only separate one type of emulsions and cannot meet the requirements in complex environments. Herein, a bi-functional Janus mesh membrane with selective directional oil- and water-transport integration induced by direction-directed dual asymmetric wettability is demonstrated for energetic-efficient on-demand separation of oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsion. An ingenious double single-side asymmetric modification strategy is proposed to make a homogenous mesh membrane with special Janus interface, where one surface features oleophobicity and hydrophilicity while the other shows superhydrophobicity and oleophilicity. This direction-directed wettability imbalance gives rise to the selective directional both water and oil transport property, namely , one surface directionally transports oil and block water. In contrast, the other surface suspends the oil and directionally transports water across the membrane. According to this property, this multifunctional Janus mesh membrane achieves high-performance on-demand oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions separation without extra energy consumption.

Vapor-driven smart Janus materials have made significant advancements in intelligent monitoring, control, and interaction, etc. Nevertheless, the development of ultrafast response single-layer Janus membrane, along with a deep exploration of the smart response mechanisms, remains a long-term endeavor. Here, the successful synthesis of a high-crystallinity single-layer Covalent organic framework (COF) Janus membrane is reported by morphology control. This kind of membrane displays superior mechanical properties and specific surface area, along with excellent responsiveness to CH 2 Cl 2 vapor. The analysis of the underlying mechanisms reveals that the vapor-induced breathing effect of the COF and the stress mismatch of the Janus structure play a crucial role in its smart deformation performance. It is believed that this COF Janus membrane holds promise for complex tasks in various fields.

Thermally driven membrane distillation (TDMD) has emerged as a promising seawater desalination technology to address the freshwater shortage and energy crisis. However, the conventional “bulk-heating” technologies results in serious temperature polarization phenomenon, hindering efficient utilization of the energy. Here, an innovative hydroxylated CNTs-engineered polyvinylidene fluoride (H-CNT@PVDF) membrane is proposed which imparts an efficient, localized photo-/electro-thermal self-heating effect. To prevent the heat loss from the self-heating layer to bulk water, a transparent silica aerogel microspheres (SAM) layer is deposited on the H-CNT layer, achieving excellent self-insulating effect. The innovative SAM@H-CNT@PVDF Janus membrane achieves a 486% increase in MD flux compared with the conventional membrane. Although SAM layer only account for 3.8% of the membrane, the thermal resistance increases, unexpectedly, by more than 600%, which allows most of the heat to be concentrated at the H-CNT layer and used for seawater evaporation. The overall energy-to-water efficiency reach 94.5%, outperforming state-of-the-art MD devices. Additionally, the SAM layer demonstrates excellent anti-electrooxidation effect with the current degradation decreasing from 75.6% to 21.1%, ensuring long-term working for the membrane. The membrane represents a significant advancement in MD technology and holds substantial promise for ultra-low energy seawater desalination, offering a promising solution to water-energy nexus.

Accurately monitoring blood glucose in real-time is highly required for diabetes. Utilizing membrane to realize fast separation of a trace of blood is significant for accurately testing blood glucose. In this work, we designed a Janus membrane with thin film composite structure by electrospinning polyurethane (PU) on Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 -coated nylon mesh. This Janus membrane exhibited directional liquid transport performance and liquid wastage reduction during separation through optimizing the surface wettability , pore parameters and asymmetric structures of membrane. When a trace of water with volume as small as 3 μL was dipped on the hydrophobic side with pore size of around 1.1 μm, this water droplet could easily penetrate through the Janus membrane within 2.9 s under only gravity and liquid wastage reduction was achieved at the same time (D 2 /D 1 = 1.27), suggesting an excellent liquid transportation performance. The blood glucose meter integrated with this Janus membrane could efficiently remove red blood cells from 10 μL blood within 7.2 s. As a result, the sensitivity of the blood glucose meter increased by 4.5%.

Janus membrane (JM) with opposite wettability has great potential in separation of oil-in-water (O/W) and water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions. In this work, we have reported a simple, low cost nanocasting/NIPS strategy for preparation of the superhydrophobic and underwater oleophobic surface of JM for the first time. Poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and polyethylenimine (PEI) blend membranes were fabricated on PDMS modified non-woven fabric by non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) process. Then the as-prepared membranes were further modified with hydrophilic nano-SiO 2 to improve the hydrophilicity of the top surface. Peel off PDMS modified non-woven fabric, parts of PDMS chains were imprinted to the membrane bottom surface with micro-nano three-dimensional microstructures, resulting in superhydrophobic property. The as-prepared JM exhibits an asymmetric wettability with the water contact angle of 35.3° and 151.8° of the opposite surfaces. By changing the orientation of the membrane, oil or water can be filtered respectively. The as-prepared JM shows excellent separation performance for both O/W emulsion and W/O emulsion, the separation efficiency reached 99.72 % and 99.68 %, respectively, as well as good long-term stability. This work is expected to yield a new way to fabricate the superhydrophobic surface of JM.

Due to the prominent membrane interface effect micro-oil or micro-water droplets are easily fused with water or oil and are difficult to separate. The size of underwater/underoil droplets varies greatly, it needs a functional membrane for separating various oil–water mixtures. A novel bionic Janus membrane with a superhydrophobic spindle knots structure was prepared by a one-step dual-axis electrospinning technique. The Janus membrane relying on liquid unidirectional permeation achieves the separation of various oil–water mixtures including light/heavy oils-water, oil-in-water, and water-in-oil emulsions. Accordingly, it can be designed as an underoil diode water collector without any leakage. Importantly, the spindle knots absorb, transport and coalesce the micro-oil droplets into large oil droplets during separating oil-in-water emulsion, whereas it can repel water adhesion and allow oil spreading during separating water-in-oil emulsion. Thus, the spindle knots endow the ultra-high interface oil–water mixture, various emulsions separation efficiency (interface oil: >99.8 %, oil-in-water emulsion: 99.5 %, water-in-oil emulsion: 99.2 %), and excellent antifouling properties of Janus membranes for underwater oil and underoil water. This bionic Janus membrane presents a wide application in smart oil–water separation equipment, biomedical microreactors, and flotation filtration devices.

Oil/water separation, especially for those surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions, is required to protect our ecological environment from destruction. Janus membranes with a function of deemulsification appear as a kind of efficient materials for the separation of O/W emulsions because of a precise adjustment of the surface nature for the hydrophilic and hydrophobic layers. However, existing strategies of membrane preparation suffer from complicated multisteps, leading to uncontrolled thickness of the hydrophilic deemulsification layer. Herein, we present a facile and tunable method to prepare a series of Janus membranes consisting of negatively or positively charged carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and hydrophobic microfiltration membranes by vacuum filtration. The thickness of the hydrophilic CNT coating is thus well-controlled by engineering the amount of CNTs deposited on the substrate membrane. The prepared Janus membranes are effective for the separation of both heavy oil and light oil from O/W emulsions through deemulsification owing to the charge-screening effect. It is very interesting that those membranes displaying a combination of water contact angle and underwater oil contact angle both above 90° have a unique oil delivery behavior and thus high separation performance of oil from O/W emulsions. Such Janus membranes can retrieve 89% of oil in 40 min from the 1,2-dichloroethane/water emulsions with the droplet size of 19 μm. This easy-to-prepare and easy-to-tune strategy provides feasibilities for practical applications of Janus membranes to the deemulsification and separation of O/W emulsions.

Membrane wetting and fouling issues are two major obstacles which hinder the practical application of membrane distillation (MD). In this study, a sequential electrospray method was introduced to impart a dual-layered superhydrophilic/superhydrophobic Janus skin onto a commercial polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) substrate. The bottom superhydrophobic layer was obtained by incorporating octaphenylsilsesquioxane (POSS) nanoparticles into PVDF carriers to construct a POSS@PVDF multiscale rough surface via electrospraying. At the same time, the top hierarchical-structured hydrophilic coating was composed of PAN beaded nanofilaments, rendering an intriguing in-air hydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity which benefited from the loose packing state of the interconnected beads and nanofibers. Further, this Janus skin exhibited good integrity and strong adhesion with the substrate, and due to its underlying superhydrophobicity and slightly decreased pore size, the hierarchical Janus membrane possessed a greatly enhanced liquid entry pressure of water (LEPw). Once applied in the MD process, with soybean-oil-in-saline-water emulsions as feed, this Janus membrane exhibited stable and excellent desalination performance with a high flux and nearly perfect salt rejection, whereas both the commercial and superhydrophobic membranes failed from oil contaminating. This suggests the remarkable simultaneous anti-wetting and anti-fouling property of Janus membranes, which possess great potential in water reclamation for challenging hypersaline oily wastewaters.
