In this work, a kojic acid electrochemical sensor, based on a non-covalent molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) modified electrode, had been fabricated in the lab-on-valve system. The sensitive layer was synthesized by cyclic voltammetry using o -phenylenediamine as the functional monomer and kojic acid as the template. The template molecules were then removed from the modified electrode surface by washing with NaOH solution. Differential pulse voltammetry method using ferricyanide as probe was applied as the analytical technique, after extraction of kojic acid on the electrode. Chemical and flow parameters associated with the extraction process were investigated. The response recorded with the imprinted sensor exhibited a response in a range of 0.01–0.2 μmol L −1 with a detection limit of 3 nmol L −1 . The interference studies showed that the MIP modified electrode had excellent selectivity. Furthermore, the proposed MIP electrode exhibited good sensitivity and low sample/reagent consumption, and the sensor could be applied to the determination kojic acid in cosmetics samples.

A dual-mode lab-on-paper device based on BiVO4/FeOOH nanocomposites as an efficient generating photoelectrochemical (PEC)/colorimetric signal reporter has been successfully constructed by integration of the lab-on-paper sensing platform and PEC/colorimetric detection technologies for sensitive detection of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). Concretely, the BiVO4/FeOOH nanocomposites were in situ synthesized onto the paper-working electrode (PWE) through hydrothermal synthesis of the BiVO4layer on cellulose fibers (paper-based BiVO4) which were initially modified by Au nanoparticles for improving the conductivity of three dimensional PWE, and then the photo-electrodeposition of FeOOH onto the paper-based BiVO4to construct the paper-based BiVO4/FeOOH for the portable dual-mode lab-on-paper device. The obtained nanocomposites with an FeOOH needle-like structure deposited on the BiVO4layer exhibits enhanced PEC response activity due to its effective separation of the electron–hole pair which could further accelerate the PEC conversion efficiency during the sensing process. With the introduction of CEA targets onto the surface of nanocomposite-modified PWE assisted by the interaction with the CEA antibody from a specific recognition property, a signal-off PEC signal state with a remarkable photocurrent response decreasing trend can be achieved, realizing the quantitative detection of CEA with the PEC signal readout mode. By means of a smart origami paper folding, the colorimetric signal readout is achieved by catalyzing 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to generate blue oxidized TMB in the presence of H2O2due to the satisfied enzyme-like catalytic activity of the needle-like structure, FeOOH, thereby achieving the dual-mode signal readout system for the proposed lab-on-paper device. Under the optimal conditions, the PEC and colorimetric signals measurement were effectively carried out, and the corresponding linear ranges were 0.001–200 ng·mL−1and 0.5–100 ng·mL−1separately, with the limit of detection of 0.0008 and 0.013 ng·mL−1for each dual-mode. The prepared lab-on-paper device also presented a successful application in serum samples for the detection of CEA, providing a potential pathway for the sensitive detection of target biomarkers in clinical application.Keywords:PEC;colorimetric;lab-on-paper device;BiVO4/FeOOH;CEA

The fermentation of navel orange juice with lactic acid bacteria (LAB) has rarely been investigated. In this study, an autochthonous LAB strain isolated from navel orange, Lactiplantibacillus paraplantarum M23, was found to effectively ferment navel orange juice, producing a juice with enhanced functional activities and organoleptic quality. The viable bacterial count in the fermented orange juice remained consistently above 8.51 log CFU/mL throughout the entire 7-day fermentation period. The content of vitamin C (VC), total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and hesperidin in the fermented orange juice increased by a maximum of 28.88, 1.21, 1.13, and 1.16 times, respectively, compared to the unfermented orange juice. The fermented juice exhibited significantly higher antioxidant activity than the unfermented juice, with an increase of up to 255 % and 347 % based on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferric ion reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays, respectively. This may be attributed to the increase in VC and flavonoids, as demonstrated by Pearson's correlation analysis. Additionally, the fermented orange juice demonstrated improved α-glucosidase inhibition, anti-MRSA, and anti-glycation activities compared to the unfermented juice. Furthermore, the fermented juice notably reduced the levels of NO and ROS in Raw 264.7 cells without any negative impact on cell viability. The findings of this study may help in the development of nutritious and healthy fermented navel orange juice products, and serve as a reference for the production of fermented beverages from other fruits using autochthonous strains.

We demonstrate an ultrasensitive microRNA detection method based on an extremely simple probe with only fluorogens but without quencher groups. It avoids complex and difficult steps to accurately design the relative distance between the fluorogens and quencher groups in the probes. Furthermore, the assay could accomplish various detection limits by tuning the reaction temperature due to the different activity of exonuclease III corresponding to the diverse temperature. Specifically, 1 pM miR-21 can be detected in 40 min at 37 °C, and 10 aM (about 300 molecules in 50 μL) miR-21 could be discriminated in 7 days at 4 °C. The great specificity of the assay guarantees that the real 21 urine samples from the bladder cancer patients are successfully detected by our method.

Flow chemiluminescence (CL) is widely applied for detection of heavy metal ions in environment, but it is seldom used in economical, practical, or affordable settings because non- and minimally instrumented flow driving is difficult to achieve. Here, we first report a gravity and capillary force-driven flow CL (GCF-CL) lab-on-cloth device, toward development of low-cost, easy-to-use, portable, minimally-instrumented platform for determination of trivalent chromium [Cr(III)] in water, where a difference in height between two zones on cloth creates a fast flow of CL trigger solution. Wax screen-printing was used to fabricate ultra-low-cost cloth-based devices, and the light emitted from the Cr(III)-catalysed oxidation of luminol by H 2 O 2 was imaged using an inexpensive portable CCD camera. Under optical conditions, Cr(III) could be determined over the range of 0.01–100 mg/L, with a detection limit of 6.2 μg/L, an analysis time of less than 30 s per sample, and RSDs of 6.2%, 3.1% and 1.7% for 0.05, 0.5 and 5 mg/L Cr(III) (n = 5). The proposed GCF-CL lab-on-cloth was successfully applied for measuring Cr(III) in water samples, with recoveries of 100.67-111.70% and RSDs of 4.73–6.88%. Thus, the presented method should have the potential for portable field applications in environmental and public health fields.

A novel approach is developed to fabricate an ultra-thin layered flexible wearable Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) substrate named silk fibroin-anodic aluminum oxide-Au nanoparticles (SF-AAO-Au), which consists of biocompatible SF film as flexible support, ultrathin cavity AAO as template, and plasmonic Au NPs. The SF-AAO-Au sensor exhibits excellent SERS mechanical flexibility, homogeneity and sensitivity for its effective enhancement ability and highly ordered 3D periodic porous particle-in-cavity (PIC) arrays structure. The humidity-driven interface structure of biocompatible SF film provides good skin adhesion under various fitness tests and excellent mechanical flexibility as a wearable SERS sensor on natural skin (deformation within 5%). The flexible SF-AAO-Au can be developed as quantitative sweat glucose sensor in the concentration range of 10 − 7 to 10 − 3 M with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.68 × 10 − 7 M and qualitative human sweat glucose detection ability. This SF-AAO-Au substrate can be further designed as lab-on-glove SERS sensing platform for ultrasensitive (LOD ~5.7 ppt) quantitative on-site detection of agricultural residues in a wide range. The effective dual-functional SERS wearable sensor realized for the first time paves a new way to develop smart wearable and non-destructive devices in environmental safety, forensic identification and point-of-care testing (POCT) diagnosis of physiological disease.

In order to realize the one-to-one correspondence between outputs and inputs in the multiparameter detection field, a multiparameter DNA hybridization sensor with temperature and pH detection channels based on a fiber-based triple surface plasmon resonance (Triple-SPR) effect is demonstrated in this paper. Compared with previous works, the significant innovation of this paper is the independent temperature testing and pH testing channels implemented based on a single fiber optic structure, and the high-sensitivity DNA hybridization detection channel. Polydimethylsiloxane and the self-assembled materials formed by polyacrylic acid (PAA) and chitosan (CS) are used for the real-time detection of temperature and pH. With the help of these two materials, the instantaneous response of the Triple-SPR sensor to temperature and pH has been realized, and the response times (RT) are less than 1 s and 20 s, respectively. After the modification of probe DNA (pDNA), the selective detection of complementary DNA (cDNA) is achieved. The sensitivity and detection limit (DL) reaches 0.09 nm/(nmol/L) and 3.69 nmol/L, respectively. The experimental results demonstrate that an approximately one-to-one correspondence exists between inputs and outputs. The output signals can be used to provide feedback signals for achieving stable temperature and pH environments. The advantages of multi-parameter independent detection, high-sensitivity as well as fast response of the fiber-based Triple-SPR sensing technology are of great significance in the field of future multi-parameter sensing, compensated detection as well as real-time bio-monitoring.

In this work, novel dual-mode lab-on-paper devices based on in situ grown WO3/BiVO4 heterojunctions onto cellulose fibers, as signal amplification probes, were successfully fabricated by the integration of photoelectrochemical (PEC)/colorimetric analysis technologies into a paper sensing platform for the ultrasensitive detection of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP). Specifically, to achieve an impressive PEC performance of the lab-on-paper device, the WO3/BiVO4 heterojunction was in situ grown onto the surface of cellulose fibers assisted with Au nanoparticle (Au NP) functionalization for enhancing the conductivity of the working zone of the device. With the target concentration increased, more immune conjugates could be captured by the proposed paper photoelectrode, which could lead to a quantitative decrease in the photocurrent intensity, eventually realizing the accurate PEC signal readout. To meet the requirement of end-user application, a colorimetric signal readout system was designed for the lab-on-paper device based on the color reaction of 3,3′5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidized by WO3/BiVO4 nanoflowers in the presence of H2O2. Noticeably, it is the first time that the WO3/BiVO4 heterojunction is in situ grown onto cellulose fibers, which enhances the sensitivity in view of both their PEC activity and catalytic ability. By controlling the conversion process of hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity on the lab-on-paper device combined with diverse origami methods, the dual-mode PEC/colorimetric signal output for the ultrasensitive AFP detection was realized. Under optimal conditions, the proposed dual-mode lab-on-paper device could enable the sensitive PEC/colorimetric diagnosis of AFP in the linear range of 0.09–100 ng mL−1 and 5–100 ng mL−1 with the limit of detection of 0.03 and 1.47 ng mL−1, respectively.

Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV) has long infected cucurbit crops, particularly melons and watermelons, resulting in substantial economic losses. Early and accurate quantification of CGMMV are essential for managing viral outbreaks and ensuring fruit quality and safety. Conventional ELISA and RT-PCR methods are limited by several drawbacks, including low detection sensitivity, limited automation, high equipment dependency, and susceptibility to contamination, which collectively restrict their field applicability. To address these limitations, a lab-on-a-syringe platform was proposed for the on-site and sensitive detection of CGMMV based on a multi-functional piston valve combined with immunomagnetic separation. The core innovation lay in the piston valve’s ability to execute complex fluidic sequences using only a single programmable screw motor, minimizing system complexity. Specifically, a double-antibody sandwich complex was formed using immunomagnetic beads (MNBs) and HRP-conjugated antibodies, generating a fluorescent signal via HRP-catalyzed ADHP-to-resorufin conversion. The piston valve-syringe coordination enables integration of immunomagnetic capture, separation, washing, and fluorescence detection of CGMMV. Under optimized conditions, the lab-on-a-syringe platform enabled sensitive detection of CGMMV in watermelon leaf samples down to 2.77 pg/mL within 45 min, demonstrating a correlation coefficient ( R² ) of 0.985 compared with the national standard method, along with an average recovery rate of 102.94%. The proposed system constituted a promising approach for highly sensitive immunological pathogen point-of-care testing (POCT) in resource-limited settings.

Frequent nocturia-induced nighttime visits aggravate falls in seniors, requiring synthetic antidiuretic drugs that risk the dangerous syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH), thus the detection of sodium ion and uric acid alterations during treatment is obligatory for drug-safe management. Herein, we design a convolutional neural network (CNN)-enhanced smart wearable microneedle array-based colorimetric (WMNC) sensor to independently detect in vivo interstitial fluid (ISF) sodium ions and uric acid alterations. The WMNC sensor is composed of a vacuum tube-driven microneedle array patch and a built-in colorimetric sensing paper, enabling an efficient ISF extraction and rapid colorimetric assay. Furthermore, leveraging self-designed CNNs, the WMNC sensor efficiently eliminates the influence of ambient light on colorimetric outcomes, facilitating a rapid and accurate colorimetric result classification. This study provides an ISF-based rapid, intuitionistic, user-friendly, wearable point-of-care technique for the elderly suffering from nocturia in monitoring their health status for early warnings of SIADH.

In this study, an internal circulation-anoxic/aerobic (IC-A/O) process followed by ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO) system was applied for paper wastewater reclamation. The IC-AO system presented a stable and efficient performance, achieving high removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (TN) with methane production rate of 132.8 mL/d. Acute toxicity to Daphnia magna ( D. magna ) was reduced significantly (83.2%) and the spearman's rank correlation analysis indicated that the toxicity of effluents from each reactor were positively correlated with COD and TOC. Hexadecanoic acid, octadecanoic acid and benzophenone were the main toxic contributors for biological effluent. Microbial community revealed that Anaerolinea was significantly related with organic pollutants. The UF-RO system further removed pollutants and toxicity with the final effluent COD, TOC, ammonium nitrogen (NH 4 + -N) and TN of 32.6, 18.8, 0.3 and 9.2 mg/L, respectively, which proved that it was feasible for paper wastewater reuse. This study presented an efficient, practical and environmentally competitive system, and paved a foundation for the treatment and reuse of paper wastewater.

In this work, a novel paper-based electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunosensor for ultrasensitive and selective detection of corresponding antigens on living cells was developed employing AuPd nanoparticles as a signal amplifier and macroporous Au-paper working electrodes (Au-PWE) for efficient cell capture. The porous AuPd nanoparticles are chosen as label nanomaterials due to their controllable three-dimensional porosity and peroxidase like activity, large surface area, superior conductivity, and favorable catalytic activity to H2O2 which could enhance the ECL intensity for signal amplification. CdTe QDs and luminol groups as ECL probes were linked with the antibodies to recognize the corresponding antigens on the cell surface and the wide potential range between them compared to conventional antigens sensors could prevent interfacing with each other. Using this strategy, human carcinoembryonic (CEA) and alphafetoprotein (AFP) antigens on living MCF-7 cancer cells as models were quantified serially through a potential scanning way. Significantly, this strategy may be quite promising in cancer early diagnosis due to the excellent analytical performance.
