As a promising strategy, Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) is applied to improve the efficiency of metal–semiconductor photocatalysts. However, current research have focused on maximizing the LSPR effect in a single structure, rather than the simultaneous consideration of the synergy between integrated structural characteristics and LSPR effect. Here we designed an integrated structure of Cu 2 O@Au/Cu 2 O heterostructure particles (HPs), which were provided with both the core–shell heterostructure (Cu 2 O@Au) and the inter-embedded heterostructure (Au/Cu 2 O). Cu 2 O@Au/Cu 2 O HPs showed much enhanced photocatalytic performance than pure Cu 2 O and other heterostructures with single structural characteristics. Experimental characterization and theoretical simulation confirm that the integrated heterostructure follows the three-in-one synergy, which include the LSPR effect of Au nanoparticles, the light scattering based on core–shell heterostructure, and the effective charge separation based on inter-embedded heterostructure. The concept of integrated heterostructure cooperated with LSPR effect provides a new strategy to design future catalysts.

Early screening for colorectal cancer (CRC) is crucial for reducing its mortality. This study developed a amplification-free, highly sensitive sensing system based on localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) technology integrated with a multi-channel microfluidic chip platform for the in situ detection of the key CRC biomarker microRNA-451 (miRNA-451) using gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), achieving a limit of detection (LOD) of 19.2 fM. The core of this system is a multi-channel microfluidic chip serving as the detection substrate, where single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) probes are immobilized on the AuNPs surfaces to construct the sensor. In the presence of the target miRNA-451, it hybridizes specifically with two types of ssDNA probes, inducing the formation of AuNPs dimers and consequently causing a red shift in their LSPR scattering spectra. Unlike conventional methods, this study employed a precise single-nanoparticle tracking strategy, quantifying the target by statistically analyzing the proportion of AuNPs exhibiting significant spectral red shifts within the same field of view (FOV). This approach effectively mitigates spatial sampling errors arising from FOV inconsistencies. Furthermore, the system decouples the "hybridization" and "detection" functions, significantly enhancing detection efficiency and accuracy. This work provides a robust technical platform for the amplification-free and highly sensitive detection of miRNA-451.

Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) fiber-optic sensors based on silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) offer great potential for label-free biosensing due to their high sensitivity and real-time detection capabilities. However, their application is hindered by susceptibility to oxidation and poor self-assembly caused by surface ligands. In this work, a high-performance LSPR fiber-optic biosensor was constructed based on PS-b-P4VP diblock copolymer (BCP) templated self-assembly combined with a competitive ligand exchange strategy. Compact citrate ligands were used to completely replace bulky tannate ligands on the AgNP surface, which significantly optimized the self-assembled morphology and sensing performance. The effects of self-assembly time, BCP concentration, solution pH and AgNP diameter on the plasmonic sensing performance were systematically investigated and optimized. Finite element simulation was carried out to reveal the regulatory mechanism of interparticle plasmon coupling and near-field enhancement for sensing sensitivity. Under the optimal conditions, the sensor achieved a high refractive index sensitivity of 590 nm/RIU and a nanoparticle surface coverage of 18.3%. The sensor also showed favorable storage stability in aqueous solution. For the label-free detection of human IgG, the sensor presented a linear response in the range of 0–10 μg/mL with a low detection limit of 0.1 μg/mL. This work provides an effective and universal strategy for the fabrication of high-stability and high-sensitivity AgNP-based LSPR fiber sensors, and promotes their application in the field of rapid biochemical detection.

Compared with traditional photocatalytic materials, hollow nanofibers can show greatly improved photocatalytic efficiency due to their large specific surface area and more surface-active sites. In this work, one-dimensional (1D) hollow ZnGa2O4/ZnO nanofibers were successfully prepared by coaxial electrospinning technology first, and then the effect of Ag photodeposition on the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) was studied. It is found that Ag can improve the light absorption of the Ag@ZnGa2O4/ZnO architecture, and meanwhile an S-scheme heterojunction forms between ZnGa2O4 and ZnO, which can synergistically increase the amounts and reduce the recombination of photogenerated carriers, thereby improving the photocatalytic degradation performance. By optimizing the ratio of different mass fractions of Ag, the maximum degradation rate can reach 0.0708 min−1, which is 22 times that of the TC-HCl self-degradation rate. This work not only provides a new idea for the preparation of a 1D hollow nanofiber heterojunction photocatalyst, but has also prepared an effective catalyst for photocatalytic degradation of TC-HCl.

The optical fiber sensor, which exploits surface plasmon resonance (SPR), finds extensive application in biological detection owing to its miniaturized and real-time measurement capabilities. Nevertheless, SPR sensors alone exhibit limited sensitivity when detecting small biological molecules. This paper presents a novel gold nanoparticle (AuNPs)/two-dimensional metal–organic framework (2D MOF Cu-TCPP)/Au/D-shaped fiber SPR sensor for dopamine detection. The composite structure of AuNPs/2D MOF/Au was designed to facilitate the coupling of SPR and local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), resulting in a substantial enhancement of the intensity of the surface electric field. A 104.61 % increase in sensitivity and a 73.87 % increase in figure of merit (FOM) were achieved by optimizing the optimal deposition concentration of AuNPs/2D MOF . The finite element method was utilized in COMSOL software to demonstrate that the coupling of SPR and LSPR can significantly enhance the sensitivity value (10,000 nm/RIU). Additionally, the sensitization mechanism of the sensor is elucidated by the energy band theory. Moreover, probe DNA was utilized as a linker to capture dopamine molecules, achieving a low limit of detection (LOD) of 1.07 ± 0.07*10 −14 M. These results demonstrated that the proposed sensor enables accurate and highly sensitive detection of dopamine molecules.

Synergistic surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates, leveraging the combined strengths of electromagnetic enhancement (EM) and chemical enhancement (CM), have been extensively explored in the literature. In this study, we introduce a distinctive approach to fabricating core@shell structures, specifically employing silver nanowire @ zeolite imidazole framework-8 (AgNW@ZIF-8) as synergistic SERS substrates. Notably, these substrates offer meticulous control over shell thickness through a straightforward post-synthesis procedure. Utilizing Ag nanowires as the plasmonic core, selected for their broader localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption range compared to nanoparticles , we encapsulate them within ZIF-8, a metal-organic framework (MOF) recognized for its proficient charge transfer (CT) properties. Our investigation encompasses the SERS performance across various Raman-active molecules, considering their diverse sizes and distinct frontier molecular orbitals (FMO) energy levels. Additionally, we systematically explore the influence of alterations in shell thickness on SERS outcomes and scrutinize the impact of probe orientation. This comprehensive study not only advances the understanding of synergistic effects intrinsic to MOFs-metal SERS substrates but also provides valuable insights for the rational design of highly sensitive substrates tailored for practical applications.

As promising photocatalysts, nano-sized Cu2O particles suffer from severe charge recombination and insufficient light absorption, resulting in their unsatisfactory photocatalytic performance. Herein, we have designed a core–shell structured Au nanorod@octahedron Cu2O with preferentially edge-loaded Au nanoparticles (Au(R)@Cu2O–Au(P)) for an efficient photocatalytic degradation reaction. A “push–pull” synergetic effect of Au(R) and Au(P) was found to improve the transfer and separation of charge carriers from the bulk to the surface of Cu2O. Furthermore, the light beyond Cu2O particles’ absorption range can penetrate the shell (Cu2O) and for being utilized by the Au(R) core via its localized surface plasmon resonance effect (LSPR) to inject hot electrons into the conduction band of Cu2O for photocatalytic reactions. Moreover, the investigation of the size effect of Au(R)@Cu2O–Au(P) reveals that both the short charge transfer distance and the more efficient charge transfer have contributed to its enhanced photocatalytic activity.

Mercury is one of the most dangerous heavy metals due to its extreme toxicity to both humans and the biosphere. In this work, an in-situ and ultrasensitive method for the detection of mercury (II) ions (Hg 2+ ) using the dark-field microspectroscopy-based localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) nanosensor is demonstrated. In our homemade high-throughput microfluidic chip, the fixed nanorods and the free small gold nanospheres combine to form the core-satellite structures with the help of T- Hg 2+ -T chemical coordination. Such a process results in a spectral red shift due to plasmonic coupling, which allows us to reach a picomolar detection limit and a linear response range from 10 pM to 10 µM. In addition, our LSPR nanosensor has excellent selectivity and no interference for the detection of Hg 2+ , which was evaluated by monitoring responses to different heavy metal ions (Pb 2+ , Cd 2+ , Cr 2+ , Ni 2+ , and Cu 2+ ) and their mixed samples. Our sensor platform's effectiveness offers a practical method for detecting traces of Hg 2+ in real-life water samples.

The challenge of synergistically optimizing different mechanisms limits the further improvement of plasmon-mediated photocatalytic activities. In this work, an Au/Bi24O31Br10 composite, combining an interface ohmic contact and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), is prepared by a thermal reduction method. The LSPR effect induces the local resonance energy transfer effect and the local electric field enhancement effect, while the interface ohmic contact forms a stronger interface electric field. The novel synergistic interaction between the interface ohmic contact and LSPR drives effective charge separation and provides more active sites for the adsorption and activation of CO2 with improved photocatalytic efficiency. The optimized 0.6 wt% Au (5.7 nm) over Bi24O31Br10 nanosheets showed an apparently improved photocatalytic activity without any sacrificial reagents, specifically CO and O2 yields of 44.92 and 17.83 μmol g−1 h−1, and demonstrated superior stability (only lost 6%) after continuous reaction for 48 h, nearly 5-fold enhanced compared to Bi24O31Br10 and a great advantage compared with other bismuth-based photocatalysts.

Squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCCa), as a tumor biomarker, plays an important role in adjuvant diagnosis, treatment evaluation, and prognosis prediction for cervical cancer patients. Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) technique based on noble metal nanoparticles bypasses the disadvantages of traditional testing strategies, in terms of free-labeling, short assay time, good sensitivity, and selectivity. Herein, we develop a novel and reusable LSPR biosensor for the detection of SCCa. First, a triangle-shaped silver nanoparticle array was fabricated using the nanosphere lithography method. Next, we investigated and verified the feasibility of amino coupling method using 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA) to form a functionalized chip surface with monoclonal anti-SCCa antibodies on the silver nanoparticles for distinct detection of SCCa. Different concentrations of SCCa were successfully tested in both buffer and human serum by the ultrasensitive and specific LSPR system, with a linear quantitative detection range of 0.1–1,000 pM under optimal conditions. With appropriate regeneration solution, for example 50 mM glycine-HCl (pH 2.0), the LSPR biosensor featured effective fabrication reproducibility, which reduced both production cost and testing time. Our study represents the first application of the LSPR biosensor in cervical cancer, and demonstrates that the rapid, simple, and reusable nanochip can serve as a potential alternative for clinical serological diagnosis of SCCa in cervical cancer patients.

Covellite copper sulfide nanocrystals(CuS NCs) are typical p-type semiconductors, showing strong optical absorption in the near-infrared(NIR) region thanks to their notable localized surface plasmon resonance(LSPR) properties. However, their LSPR properties and compositions are both highly susceptible to the external environment, which severely limits their practical applications. Until now, it remains a technical challenge to improve the structural and optical stability without sacrificing the LSPR performance of CuS NCs. Herein, to solve such a challenge, CuS@SiO 2 NPs with various silica shell thicknesses(CSNs- X nm) were synthesized in a well-controlled fashion via optimizing reverse microemulsion coating protocol. Compared with the pristine CuS NCs, the as-prepared CuS@SiO 2 NPs exhibited comparable LSPR properties but much higher photostability, enabling resistance to various harsh environments( e.g. , high-power irradiation, strong reduction, and oxidation environment). Impressively, when used in solar-driven interfacial water evaporation, all the CuS@SiO 2 NPs exhibited excellent water evaporation performance with efficiencies beyond 70%(as high as 75.2% for CSN-23 nm) after 20 continuous testing cycles. Evidently, this paper is greatly helpful in better designing and fabricating high-performance plasmonic materials for practical photoelectrical, photothermal, and photocatalytic applications.

Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) are widely utilized to broaden the light absorption of the photocatalysts due to their localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). However, the photocatalytic mechanism of Au/photocatalyst heterostructure involving charges transfer and reactive sites is still in dispute. Here, we synthesized a typical system Au/graphite carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) and demonstrate that the role of Au NPs in the LSPR enhanced photocatalysis . Under visible light, the photoexcited electrons of g-C 3 N 4 would transfer to Au NPs and reduce protons into hydrogen together with hot electrons of Au NPs. The hot holes of Au NPs would flow to g-C 3 N 4 and oxidize triethanolamine . Therefore, the Au NPs play a dual role, plasma, and cocatalyst, in the LSPR enhanced photocatalyst. When λ > 420 nm, Au /g-C 3 N 4 has hydrogen production of 159.9 μmol g −1 h −1 . Our findings confirm the significance of metal plasma in photocatalytic reaction and benefit designing photocatalysts with boosting performance.
