Supramolecular polymer gels reinforced by cellulose nanofibers and laponite for lost circulation control of fractured oil and gas reservoirs

Li-Yao Dai,Jin-Sheng Sun,Kai-He Lv,Ying-Rui Bai,Bo Liao,Dong-Qing Yang,Chao-Zheng Liu,Mei-Chun Li

Fractures in geological formations, which are commonly encountered during oil and gas exploration, pose significant challenges by facilitating fluid loss and reducing wellbore stability. Polymer gels hold significant promise as lost circulation materials due to their excellent deformability under pressure and self-adaptability. However, conventional gels face certain limitations, such as poor retention of gel-forming suspensions in fractures, low structural strength, and instability at high temperatures. These issues result in low pressure-bearing capacity and, consequently, reduced effectiveness in sealing formation fractures. This study presents the synthesis of a supramolecular polymer gel (SPG) composed of acrylamide (AM), 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS), divinylbenzene (DVB), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (CNFs), and laponite via in situ radical polymerization. Due to the synergistic effects of hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions, the supramolecular polymer gel-forming suspension exhibits high retention capacity in fractures. The as-synthesized gels demonstrate remarkable temperature resistance and high mechanical strength, attributed to covalent bonding, multiple hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic interactions, along with the high aspect ratio and modulus of CNFs and laponite. This study broadens the application scope of CNFs, laponite, and SPGs, offering a novel approach for the efficient development of unconventional oil and gas resources.

Functionalized 3D-printed GelMA/Laponite hydrogel scaffold promotes BMSCs recruitment through osteoimmunomodulatory enhance osteogenic via AMPK/mTOR signaling pathway

Linquan Zhou,Chengcheng Zhang,Tengbin Shi,Dingwei Wu,Huina Chen,Jiaxin Han,Dehui Chen,Jinxin Lin,Wenge Liu

The migration and differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) play crucial roles in bone repair processes. However, conventional scaffolds often lack of effectively inducing and recruiting BMSCs. In our study, we present a novel approach by introducing a 3D-bioprinted scaffold composed of hydrogels, with the addition of laponite to the GelMA solution, aimed at enhancing scaffold performance. Both in vivo and in vitro experiments have confirmed the outstanding biocompatibility of the scaffold. Furthermore, for the first time, Apt19s has been chemically modified onto the surface of the hydrogel scaffold, resulting in a remarkable enhancement in the migration and adhesion of BMSCs. Moreover, the scaffold has demonstrated robust osteogenic differentiation capability in both in vivo and in vitro environments. Additionally, the hydrogel scaffold has shown the ability to induce the polarization of macrophages from M1 to M2, thereby facilitating the osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs via the bone immune pathway. Through RNA-seq analysis, it has been revealed that macrophages regulate the osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs through the AMPK/mTOR signaling pathway. In summary, the functionalized GelMA/Laponite scaffold offers a cost-effective approach for tailored in situ bone regeneration.

Influences of Reservoir Conditions on the Performance of Cellulose Nanofiber/Laponite-Reinforced Supramolecular Polymer Gel-Based Lost Circulation Materials

Liyao Dai,Jinsheng Sun,Kaihe Lv,Yingrui Bai,Jianlong Wang,Chaozheng Liu,Mei-Chun Li

Lost circulation during drilling has significantly hindered the safe and efficient development of oil and gas resources. Supramolecular polymer gel–based lost circulation materials have shown significant potential for application due to their unique molecular structures and superior performance. Herein, a high–performance supramolecular polymer gel was developed, and the influence of reservoir conditions on the performance of the supramolecular polymer gel was investigated in detail. The results identified an optimal formulation for the preparation of supramolecular polymer gel comprising 15 wt% acrylamide, 3 wt% 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid, 2.6 wt% divinylbenzene, 5 wt% polyvinyl alcohol, 0.30 wt% cellulose nanofibers, and 3 wt% laponite. The performance of the gel-forming suspension and the resulting supramolecular polymer gel was influenced by various factors, including temperature, density, pH, and the intrusion of drilling fluid, saltwater, and crude oil. Nevertheless, the supramolecular polymer gels consistently exhibited high strength under diverse environmental conditions, as confirmed by rheological measurements. Moreover, the gels exhibited strong plugging performance across various fracture widths and in permeable formations, with maximum breakthrough pressures exceeding 6 MPa. These findings establish a theoretical foundation and practical approach for the field application of supramolecular polymer gels in complex geological formations, demonstrating their effectiveness in controlling lost circulation under challenging downhole conditions.

Fabrication of a bionic asymmetric wettable Cu-doped chitosan-laponite-PCL wound dressing with rapid healing and antibacterial effect

Zini Liu,Xueqi Chen,Chen Li

Asymmetrical dressings, which are composed of a compact top layer and a porous bottom layer, are commonly used to mimic the characteristics and structure of the epidermis and dermis layers, and overcome the flaws of traditional dressings such as wound dryness and bacterial penetration. Herein, a bio-inspired double-layer asymmetric wettable wound dressing was prepared by low-temperature 3D printing coupled with electrospinning technology. The hydrophobic top layer of poly(caprolactone)(PCL) film produced by electrospinning was used to simulate the compact and air-permeable epidermis. The hydrophilic bottom layer of the dressing, a scaffold composed of chitosan and copper ions doped Laponite (Cu@CS-Lap) was used to kill bacteria and speed up wound healing. Additionally, the composite dressings also showed excellent cytocompatibility and antibacterial properties in vitro experiments. The migratory area of Cu-doped group human umbilical vein endothelial cells increased by about 48.19% compared to the control group, as revealed by the results of the cell scratch experiment. Furthermore, in vivo experiments in rats showed that wound closure at the 0.5Cu@CS5-PCL dressing reached 98.24% after 12 days, indicating the enormous potential of asymmetric double dressings in boosting wound healing.

A high-performance adsorbent of 2D Laponite in-situ coated on 3D diatomite for advanced adsorption of cationic dye

Dai Nan,Feng Li,Zhao Li,Song Dan,Dai XingJian,Liu XiaoYing,Zhang YuXin

A one-step hydrothermal method was used to synthesize two-dimensional layered Laponite nanosheets (Laponite@diatomite) in situ on the three-dimensional biological template diatomite. The cationic dye removal ability of Laponite@diatomite with different diatomite content was studied. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), Fourier transformed-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and N 2 adsorption-desorption technology were used to characterize synthetic materials. The effects of pH, initial concentration, dynamics, and thermodynamics behavior on the adsorption performance were further studied. La@D-0.1 had the highest adsorption efficiency, and the adsorption rate of methylene blue (MB) solution (450 mg L −1 ) reached 76.7% in the initial 5 min. At the time of adsorption equilibrium (1 h), methylene blue adsorption rate reached 86.4%. The adsorption behavior of La@D-0.1 on MB was characterized by Langumuir isotherm and with better fitting to the quasi-second-order kinetic model curve. By calculating the adsorption process’s thermodynamic parameters, we were able to illustrate that the adsorption process was exothermic. This work provides a novel idea for the synthesis of an economical and ideal, cationic dye nano-adsorbent and provides a potential application for the purification of actual dye wastewater.

Hydrophobic-associated polymer-based laponite nanolayered silicate composite as filtrate reducer for water-based drilling fluid at high temperature

Haokun Shen,Kaihe Lv,Xianbin Huang,Jingping Liu,Yingrui Bai,Jintang Wang,Jinsheng Sun

Wellbore instability caused by water invasion is the main problem in oil and gas drilling operation. This study reports the utilization of a hydrophobic-associated polymer-based laponite nanolayered silicate composite as a filtrate reducer in water-based drilling fluids (WDFs). The thermal performance and micromorphology of the composite were analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis, transmission electron microscope, and field emission scanning electron microscopy. The results indicated that the composite possessed a “bean pod” structure and a good thermal stability. The rheological properties of the composite solution were evaluated. The results showed that the hydrophobic association interaction of the composite is weak but existent, and the crosslink network structure is variable. The applied performances of WDFs containing the composite were also evaluated. Evaluation results showed that the composite could improve the properties of the thermal stability, salt tolerance, and fluid loss control of WDFs. The particle size distribution of WDFs and the micrographs of filter cakes explained the improving. The composite was expected to be applied as an efficient filtrate reducer for developing high performance drilling fluids. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2020 , 137 , 48608.

LAPONITE® nanoplatform functionalized with histidine modified oligomeric hyaluronic acid as an effective vehicle for the anticancer drug methotrexate

Jinyu Li,Yue Yang,Yibin Yu,Qi Li,Guoxin Tan,Yuanyuan Wang,Wei Liu,Weisan Pan

The synthetic clay material, LAPONITE® (LAP), having a nanodisk structure together with a negatively charged surface, has been used for effective drug encapsulation by virtue of its interlayer space. In this research effort, the LAP nanodisk was used for the first time to encapsulate the antifolic methotrexate (MTX); the MTX-loaded LAP nanodisks (LAP/MTX) demonstrated a high drug loading efficiency of 80.39%. An efficient and reliable tumor-targeting device that rests on the synthesized oligomeric hyaluronic acid-L-histidine (oHA–His) was then encapsulated in the MTX-loaded LAP disks (forming LAP/MTX/oHA–His nanohybrids). The drug released from the LAP/MTX/oHA–His nanohybrids was pH-dependent and matched the first-order kinetics that describes the diffusion mechanism. In vitro biological evaluation manifested that the MTX-loaded LAP nanocarriers, particularly the LAP/MTX/oHA–His nanohybrids that have targetability and lysosomal antineoplastic activity, can be effectively internalized by the MCF-7 cell line, and can exhibit a more prominent anticancer cytotoxicity than free MTX. In vivo studies with mice indicated that the LAP/MTX/oHA–His nanohybrids demonstrated much higher antitumor efficiency compared to the LAP/MTX nanohybrids and pure MTX. Taken together, the LAP/oHA–His, CD44 receptor targeting and pH-sensitive multifunctional nanohybrids conferred the MTX with excellent cytocompatibility, dispersion stability, sustained pH-responsive release properties, and improved anticancer activity, and may be further developed as a potential active nanoplatform for various anticancer drugs.

Urchin-like FeOOH nanowire arrays on hierarchical Laponite@diatomite scaffolds enable synergistic radical/non-radical peroxymonosulfate activation via confined microreactor

Nan Dai,Chuan Jing,Dong Liu,Yuxin Zhang

A novel multidimensional mineral composite catalyst, FeOOH@Laponite@Diatomite (FeOOH@La@D), was synthesized by loading FeOOH onto Laponite@diatomite (La@D). The sea-urchin-like structure of FeOOH@La@D provides a large specific surface area and numerous active sites. It has a good adsorption performance for methylene blue (MB) and congo red (CR), with adsorption capacities of 630.3 mg/g and 257.1 mg/g, respectively. The synergistic effect of FeOOH and Laponite enhanced peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation performance, achieving 99 % methyl orange (MO) removal within 20 min. Quenching experiments and EPR spectra indicate that SO 4 ●- and 1 O 2 are the dominant active species. Electrochemical and XPS results support electron transfer and Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ cycling. Combining response surface methodology with random forest models, pH value and dosage are identified as key factors. This work provides candidate materials and a theoretical basis for designing environmentally friendly non-homogeneous catalysts for wastewater treatment.

Centrifugal Force Regularized Laponite@Graphene Hybrid Membranes with Ordered Interlayer Mass Transfer Channels and High Structural Stability for High-Rate Supercapacitors

Xianqiang Peng,Tingting Zhang,Jie Zheng,Xingbin Lv,Hualian Zhang,Jia-Qi Hu,Wen Tian,Shuai Tan,Junyi Ji

Development of graphene-based membrane electrodes with high electron and charge transfer capability can meet the increasing requirement for high-rate energy storage devices. Herein, we demonstrate a novel spin regularization strategy to prepare regularized graphene oxide (GO) membranes with uniform interlayer spacing for high-performance electrodes. The outer stretching forces on the radial direction together with the inner electrostatic interaction can form smoother GO flakes and 2D interlayer channels. The positively/negatively charged laponites embedded between the interlayer or at the edges of the GO flakes can enhance the stability of the channel structure, thus further promoting the mass transfer efficiency. Moreover, the membranes with ordered and stable laminar structures reveal high mechanical strength and water stability. Therefore, the as-prepared 2L@GO-10 membrane with regular interlayer channels exhibits a high gravimetric capacitance (406.5 F g–1 at 0.5 A g–1) and rate capability (53% capacitance retention from 0.5 to 100 A g–1) as well as robust cyclic stability (95% retention after 20,000 cycles). Additionally, the multiple membrane stacked electrode also exhibits high energy storage capacity.

Synthesis of covalently linked copolymer-laponite hybrid via one pot reaction as an ultra-high temperature suspension stabilizer for oil well cement

Yongxu Xie,Susu Xing,Xiaohua Li,Rongyao Chen,Miaomiao Hu,Jintang Guo

Under ultra-high temperature conditions in cementing engineering, sharp slurry viscosity drop, polymer additive decomposition and accelerated solid particle thermal motion collectively trigger severe instability, leading to marked density inhomogeneities and mechanical strength loss in set cement and threatening cementing operational safety. To address this problem, a novel ultra-high-temperature suspension stabilizer, PADNV-L hybrid, was fabricated via a one-pot reaction in this study. Specifically, laponite was incorporated into the long-chain thermothickening copolymer through covalent bonding interactions, and the organic-inorganic hybrid synergistic effect was harnessed to enhance the ultra-high temperature performance of the suspension stabilizer. The ¹H NMR, FTIR, XPS, and TGA characterizations confirmed the successful synthesis of the co-polymer (AMPS-DEAA-NVP) (namely PADN) and the Organic-inorganic hybrid polymeric material p(AMPS-DEAA-NVP-laponite) (namely PADNV-L hybrid).Comprehensive evaluations revealed that the cement slurry containing 0.5% PADNV-L polymer possesses superior stability at 200℃ compared to that containing 0.5% PADN polymer. Furthermore, the PADN-L modified slurry exhibited superior rheological and compressive properties compared to systems incorporating other polymer additives or lacking a suspension stabilizer. Through the combination of Zeta potential analysis on cement slurry supernatants and microstructural characterization of the cement, the suspension stabilization mechanism governing the PADNV-L hybrid in oil well cement (OWC) slurries was systematically revealed. The PADNV-L hybrid forms an adsorption layer on the surface of the cement particles upon addition. Furthermore, the organic-inorganic hybrid forms a three-dimensional spatial network structure in solution, enabling effective particle adsorption and support. The nucleation effect of nanoparticles promotes cement hydration, refines the pore structure of the cement stone, and consequently enhances its mechanical properties.

Design and characterization of oil-in-water nanoemulsion for enhanced oil recovery stabilized by amphiphilic copolymer, nonionic surfactant, and LAPONITE® RD

Yi Zhao,Fangfang Peng,Yangchuan Ke

The application of nanotechnology in the oil and gas industry has attracted widespread attention in recent years. This study aims to develop a nanoemulsion (NE) for use in enhanced oil recovery (EOR). The NE stabilized by anion amphiphilic copolymer, nonionic surfactant (Brij30) and modified LAPONITE® RD was prepared by the phase inversion composition (PIC) method. The appearance of the emulsion is translucent and the average particle size is less than 60 nm. The micromorphology and interfacial tension (IFT) are examined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and a spinning drop IFT meter, respectively. The NE possesses good stability evaluated by conductivity and particle size tests. The absolute value of the zeta potential of NE increases when modified LAPONITE® RD is added. In a core flooding experiment with an artificial sandstone core, the NE flooding increased oil recovery by 23.53% compared to water flooding.

Synthesis, Formulation, and Characterization of Doxorubicin-Loaded Laponite/Oligomeric Hyaluronic Acid-Aminophenylboronic Acid Nanohybrids and Cytological Evaluation against MCF-7 Breast Cancer Cells

Yang Yue,Li Jinyu,Chen Fen,Qiao Sen,Li Yunjian,Pan Weisan

As a synthetic clay material, laponite RDS (LR) was investigated as an effective drug carrier as a result of the special nanodisk structure together with the negative-charged surface to achieve enhanced cellular uptake and targeted delivery. In this research work, the synthesized oligomeric hyaluronic acid-aminophenylboronic acid (oHA-APBA) was entangled onto LR nanodisks to fabricate a valid targeted platform for breast cancer therapy. Briefly, through the formation of amide bonds, 3-APBA was connected to the chain of oHA with a substituted ratio of 4.0 ± 0.2% to synthesize oHA-APBA copolymer. Thereafter, doxorubicin (DOX) was inserted into the interlayer space of LR by the way of the ion exchange process, followed by an assembly with oHA-APBA as a targeted protection layer. The satisfactory drug encapsulation efficiency (> 80%) and narrow size distribution were achieved. The in vitro drug release study demonstrated the release of DOX from DOX@LR/oHA-APBA was sustained and acid dependent. In addition, after fitting the drug cumulative release of DOX@LR/oHA-APBA under different pH conditions with several kinetic models, it was identified that drug release from DOX@LR/oHA-APBA nanohybrids at pH 5.0 was mainly dependent on both diffusion and ion exchange effects. However, under the condition of pH 7.4, the drug was most efficiently released by diffusion effect. Importantly, DOX@LR/oHA-APBA showed remarkable cellular uptake and intracellular drug distribution in MCF-7 cells, which were consistent with inhibitory ability against MCF-7 cells. Hence, the high DOX loading capacity and enhanced cellular tracking can enlighten LR/oHA-APBA as an effective drug delivery carrier for breast cancer therapy.
