Fabrication of Li4SiO4@Li2TiO3 core-shell tritium breeding materials with controlled thickness and improved moisture stability via a shrinkage matching process

Ruichong Chen,Leiqing Tang,Yi Zuo,Jianqi Qi,Wei Feng,Haomin Wang,Zhangyi Huang,Tiecheng Lu

In this study, a shrinkage matching process was developed to achieve synchronous shrinkage of Li 4 SiO 4 and Li 2 TiO 3 during sintering, enabling the successful fabrication of a core-shell structured tritium breeder material with a Li 4 SiO 4 core and Li 2 TiO 3 shell to address the hygroscopicity of Li 4 SiO 4 . The shell thickness of the Li 4 SiO 4 @Li 2 TiO 3 core-shell breeding materials can be controlled in the range of 0–235 μm, and their moisture stability was systematically investigated at 10 % RH, 50 % RH, and 80 % RH. Results showed that increasing shell thickness significantly enhanced phase and mechanical stability in humid environments, although excessively thick shells reduced overall Li content. To understand these improvements, the moisture stabilization mechanism of this core-shell breeding ceramics was comprehensively analyzed. Notably, the core-shell pebbles with a shell thickness of 146 μm exhibited a satisfactory crushing load (80.5 N) and a suitable Li content (16.87 wt%), and maintained superior moisture stability after storage at 80 % RH for 14 days. This novel concept, preparation route, and elucidated mechanism of utilizing Li 2 TiO 3 shell to enhance the moisture stability of Li 4 SiO 4 matrix provide a new strategy for performance enhancement of advanced tritium breeding materials.

Na-doped Li4SiO4 as an efficient sorbent for low-concentration CO2 capture at high temperature: Superior adsorption and rapid kinetics mechanism

Yuanqiong Mu,Mei Zhang,Min Guo

Lithium silicate (Li 4 SiO 4 ) sorbent has garnered attention in CO 2 capture due to its high theoretical adsorption capacity and fast kinetics. However, its adsorption capacity and kinetics were hindered by low CO 2 concentration. Improving adsorption performance of Li 4 SiO 4 at low CO 2 concentration has become the key to industrial application. In this work, high-activity Na-doped Li 4 SiO 4 with controllable active substance Li 3 NaSiO 4 was achieved. The influences of raw materials ratios on the CO 2 adsorption performance were systematically investigated. When R Li/Si =4.05:1 and R Na/Si =0.15:1, the sample exhibited the highest adsorption capacity of 32.28 wt% with an equilibrium time of 29 min, and a superior stable capacity of 31.09 wt% in 15 cycles. Importantly, the double exponential fitting revealed that LiNaCO 3 accelerated the ion diffusion rate and real-time adsorption processes showed Li 3 NaSiO 4 expedited surface chemical reaction rate. Based on these, a novel Na 2 CO 3 eutectic doping mechanism was proposed. The active substance Li 3 NaSiO 4 , generated through Na doping, along with its product formed from the reaction with CO 2 , molten LiNaCO 3 , acted synergistically to improve adsorption performance by accelerating surface chemical reaction rate and ion diffusion rate. Compared with other doped Li 4 SiO 4 , the sorbent prepared in this work demonstrated competitive adsorption performance, providing theoretical and technical support for the large-scale production of high-activity Li 4 SiO 4 .

Generative shaping and material-forming (GSM) enables structure engineering of complex-shaped Li4SiO4 ceramics based on 3D printing of ceramic/polymer precursors

Fang Su,Zhenbin Su,Yu Liu,Xiao Lin,Jiwei Cao,Zhiyuan Liu,Pei Wang,Changyong Liu,Zhangwei Chen

Vat photopolymerization (VPP) 3D printing of ceramics normally uses ceramic slurries directly made of the target ceramic powder . It may become challenging when the ceramic powders are difficult-to-make and thus are expensive or rarely accessible. We have previously proposed a generative shaping and material-forming (GSM) 3D printing strategy, which involves the use of low-cost multi-component inorganic ceramic precursors as powder sources. The shaping of complex structures was realized through VPP, followed by reaction sintering to form the target ceramic material. In the current study, as a step further, ceramic (Li 2 CO 3 ) and polymer (methyl polysiloxane) combined precursors were employed as an alternative material source for the first time to go through the 3D printing and reaction sintering processes, complementing the application range of the proposed GSM strategy. The slurry formulation and printability, the sinterability of the printed parts and the microstructures and mechanical performance of the sintered parts were characterized and optimized in accordance with the ingredient contents, particularly the stoichiometric ratios of Si:Li in the precursors. As a result, complex-structured Li 4 SiO 4 ceramics with high purity were fabricated based on the use of Li 2 CO 3 ceramic and Si-rich polymer as precursors. Through the advanced characterization and analysis of material phase and microstructural evolution , it was found that the fabricated complex-structured Li 4 SiO 4 ceramics based on a precursor slurry with a solid content of 40 vol%, a Si:Li ratio of 1:2.5, and a sintering temperature of 850 ℃ showed a high phase purity of 97.23% and a compressive strength of 15.24 ± 0.33 MPa, with a skeleton’s relative density of 65.31% is achieved. The results showed greatly enhanced strength at much higher porosities, which might be advantageous and beneficial to structure engineering for mechanical enhancement and the improvement of tritium release effectiveness. Compared with the previous study using multi-component ceramic powder precursors, the ceramics prepared in this study exhibited enhanced microstructural stability and higher phase purity with an advantageously lower sintering temperature. Further analysis revealed that compared with the high temperature solid-state reaction of multi-component ceramic powder precursors, the involvement of the Si-rich polymer precursor enabled the more efficient and complete synthesis of Li 4 SiO 4 as a result of the accelerated covering and cleavage of Si–O–Si bonds on the Li 2 CO 3 particles at a much lower temperature. The present work suggests that the GSM strategy using combined ceramic and polymer precursors as proposed in this study is a promising alternative method to produce high quality Li 4 SiO 4 components with complex structures.

Unveiling the long-term cycling stability mechanism of Na-doped Li4SiO4 for low-concentration CO2 capture: From microstructural evolution to desorption kinetic modeling

Yuanqiong Mu,Junkai Chong,Xuehua Shen,Mei Zhang,Zuotai Zhang,Min Guo

Lithium silicate (Li 4 SiO 4 ) adsorbents garnered considerable interest for CO 2 capture due to their high adsorption capacity and stable cycling performance. While Na 2 CO 3 doping has been shown to enhance its the adsorption capacity at low CO 2 concentrations, the resulting samples exhibited poor cycling stability. Previous research has predominantly focused on the adsorption process, often overlooking the desorption kinetics. This study addressed this gap by investigating the desorption kinetics and decay mechanisms of Na-doped Li 4 SiO 4 to develop a version with long-term cycling stability from fly ash. The Na/Si ratio and desorption conditions were optimized. Optimal cycling stability was achieved at R Na/Si  = 0.25 and a desorption temperature of 700 °C, yielding an initial adsorption capacity of 29.45 wt% and retaining 83 % of this capacity after 56 cycles. Phase analysis, desorption kinetics modeling, and examination of kinetic parameter evolution over multiple cycles uncovered the decay mechanisms in Na-doped Li 4 SiO 4 . Active phase Li 3 NaSiO 4 ′s poor reversibility contributed to performance degradation. Furthermore, molten LiNaCO 3 played a dual role during desorption: it accelerated the diffusion of Li + /Na + /CO 3 2– but hindered CO 2 diffusion. When the LiNaCO 3 content was low, the diffusion of Li + /Na + /CO 3 2– became the rate-limiting step; conversely, when the content was high, its reaction with CO 2 to form C 2 O 5 2- impeded diffusion, thus becoming the new rate-limiting step.

Enhancement of CO2 adsorption performance and widening of adsorption temperature window by co-doping different valence state metals on the Li4SiO4 (010) surface

Guangquan Luo,Jiuyu Chen,Jiaxin Wang,Baozhong Zhu,Minggao Xu,Yang Yang,Yunlan Sun

Lithium silicate (Li 4 SiO 4 ) has good stability, high theoretical carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) adsorption capacity, and low regeneration temperature. It has great potential in the field of CO 2 adsorption. However, it is difficult to achieve the theoretical value in practical applications and a narrow temperature window for adsorption. Therefore, further research in this area is urgently needed. In this study, experimental and simulation methods were used to investigate the effects of single doping and co-doping with K, Na, Be, Ca, and Al metals on the adsorption performance and adsorption temperature window of Li 4 SiO 4 . Single doping with K, Na, or Al makes CO 2 easier to be adsorbed on the Li 4 SiO 4 (010) surface by increasing the charge transfer from the Li 4 SiO 4 surface to CO 2 . Co-doping with K and Al increases the adsorption energy of CO 2 on the Li 4 SiO 4 (010) surface, enhances hybrid peaks, and broadens the temperature range for CO 2 adsorption on the Li 4 SiO 4 surface. It exhibits stable cyclic adsorption performance under low CO 2 (15% CO 2 , N 2 balance) concentration, and more electron transfer facilitates the formation of carbonate species on the Li 4 SiO 4 (010) surface at lower temperatures, thereby improving its CO 2 adsorption performance.

A High-Performance Dual-Ion Battery Enabled by Conversion-Type Manganese Silicate Anodes with Enhanced Ion Accessibility

Shu-Meng Hao,Jin Qu,Wei Chang,Yu-Jiao Zhang,Yongbing Tang,Zhong-Zhen Yu

Graphical Conversion-type ultra-small Mn 7 O 8 (SiO 4 ) nanosheet/reduced graphene oxide anodes with enhanced diffusion kinetics are constructed for Li-dual ion batteries (LDIBs) for the first time. The in situ formed Li 4 SiO 4 ionic conductor and the pseudocapacitive contribution endow them with 191 mA h g −1 at 0.5 C and 128 mA h g −1 at 2 C after 150 cycles, realizing the construction of high-performance LDIBs. Limited by the sluggish kinetics of conversion-type anodes from huge diffusion-controlled phase transformation and unsatisfactory capacities of intercalation/alloy-type anodes, the performances of lithium-based dual ion batteries (LDIBs) remain to be promoted. Herein, for the first time, ultra-small manganese silicate (MS) nanosheets anchored on reduced graphene oxides (MSR) with enhanced diffusion kinetics are constructed, realizing the construction of high performance LDIBs on the basis of conversion-type anodes. The ion diffusion rate of MSR is promoted by in situ coating Li 4 SiO 4 ionic conductor on the electrode surface during lithiation process. Simultaneously, the ion diffusion pathways are shortened by partially converting the diffusion-controlled bulk reaction to surface reaction with massive pseudocapacitive contribution. Consequently, the MSR-based LDIB exhibits superior electrochemical performances with discharge capacities of 191 mA h g −1 at 0.5 C and 128 mA h g −1 at 2 C after 150 cycles, exceeding to those of reported LDIBs and benefiting the future electrode design of LDIBs.

CO2 high-temperature sorbent (Al, Fe, Ti) CO-doped Li4SiO4 from fly ash-derived SiO2 aerogel: In-situ synthesis, enhanced capture ability and long cycle stability

Yuanqiong Mu,Tong Wang,Mei Zhang,Min Guo

Lithium silicate (Li 4 SiO 4 ), an efficient CO 2 high-temperature sorbent , has become the research hotspot in CO 2 capture due to its large theoretical adsorption capacity and fast rate. How to further reduce production cost while ensuring the adsorption performance has become the key to industrial application. In this work, using Al, Fe, Ti co-doped SiO 2 aerogel synthesized from fly ash as silicon source, Li 4 SiO 4 sorbents were achieved through solid-state calcination method. The influences of preparing conditions on the microstructure and CO 2 capture property were systematically investigated. Under the optimum conditions, the as-prepared Li 4 SiO 4 demonstrated the best CO 2 adsorption capacity of 33.24 wt% within 7.0 min. Particularly, the CO 2 capture capacity remained 23.38 wt% (>70% of the first value) after 35 cycles, indicative of long cycle stability. Moreover, the kinetic characteristics of CO 2 adsorption process could be well simulated by the double exponential model, and the diffusion process of Li + /O 2− ions was the decisive step of the whole adsorption reaction. Compared with Li 4 SiO 4 by pure reagents, the sorbent from fly ash-based aerogel exhibited competitive adsorption capacity, which provides a new cost-effective way to synthesize CO 2 high-temperature sorbent with super capture performance and good cycle stability.
