Efficient enhancement on crystallization and electrochemical performance of LiMn2O4 by recalcination treatment

Jiabin Hao,Siqi Hao,Mu Xie

Spinel LiMn 2 O 4 cathode material was obtained by a recalcination treatment, which exhibits excellent crystallization and electrochemical performance. A series of test and analysis results revealed that the performance enhancement of as-prepared sample is related to the crystal structure, morphology and electrochemical properties. Owing to the recalcination treatment, the spinel LiMn 2 O 4 presents a truncated-octahedral morphology with selective growth of the (110) and (100) crystal planes, which would effectively inhibit manganese dissolution. Moreover, the optimized sample exhibits a better crystallinity and electrochemical reversibility than that of pristine sample, which can provide a faster Li ion de-intercalation/intercalation kinetics. Hence, the spinel LiMn 2 O 4 cathode material delivers a high initial discharge capacity of 112.3 mAh·g −1 with a good capacity retention of 90.3% after 500 cycles and an excellent rate performance. This study constructed a facile and meaningful method to prepare spinel LiMn 2 O 4 cathode material, which may facilitate the development of lithium-ion batteries.

Precisely size-controlled nanoporous LiMn2O4 for enhanced lithium extraction via hybrid capacitive deionization

Lu Zhao,Hong-mei Zhang,Panpan Zhang,Zhi-Yuan Guo,Lei Wang,Jing Wang,Zhi-Yong Ji

Hybrid capacitive deionization (HCDI) employing LiMn 2 O 4 (LMO) electrodes is a promising approach for Li + extraction from brines, where rational structural engineering of LMO is essential for performance improvement. In this study, we developed a co-precipitation-calcination strategy to synthesize nanoporous LMO (NLMO), in which calcination temperature control enables controlled particle growth and structural optimization. The optimized NLMO, benefiting from its tailored particle size, crystallinity, and porous structure, exhibits markedly enhanced Li + adsorption. With a large specific surface area of 80.15 m 2  g −1 , it provides abundant active sites and thus achieves an adsorption capacity of 29.31 mg g −1 at 1.0 V. In addition, the downsized particle dimension shortens Li + diffusion paths, boosting the adsorption rate to 1.46 mg g −1  min −1 . Notably, the porous structure buffers volume expansion during cycling, enabling the electrode to maintain structural stability. As a result, the NLMO electrode maintains 83.04 % of its capacity even after 1000 consecutive charge–discharge cycles. In addition, a high separation factor of 233.63 was achieved for Li + /Mg 2+ in brine with a Mg 2+ /Li + ratio of 20. Application studies further confirm that the electrode effectively recovers high-purity Li + from simulated salt lakes (Baqiancuo, Silver Peak, Uyuni, and Dong Taijinar) and actual low-grade oil and gas field produced water. These results demonstrate that the optimized NLMO demonstrates significant potential as a high-performance electrode for selective Li + extraction from different raw solutions.

Facile solid-state combustion synthesis of Al–Ni dual-doped LiMn2O4 cathode materials

Wang Shimin,Xiang Mingwu,Lu Yao,Guo Junming,Su Changwei,Bai Hongli,Liu Xiaofang

A series of aluminum and nickel (Al–Ni) co-doped LiAl 0.15 Ni x Mn 1.85− x O 4 composites are prepared through a facile solid-state combustion method. All the as-obtained materials show a spinel structure and analogous spherical morphology with uniform particle distribution. Moreover, the synergistic merits of Al and Ni dual substitutions endow the spinel LiMn 2 O 4 with an elevated Mn average valence state of 3.59 and relatively alleviative Jahn–Teller distortion. Among these samples, the LiAl 0.15 Ni 0.03 Mn 1.82 O 4 (LANMO-0.03) cathode exhibits an optimal electrochemical performance with the discharge capacities of 103.3 mAh g −1 and 102 mAh g −1 at 1 C and 5 C in the first cycle, and the capacity retentions are 72.0% and 68.6% after 1000 cycles, respectively. Even at 1 C and high temperature of 55 °C, an excellent capacity retention remained to be 76.6% after 200 cycles. Furthermore, the LANMO-0.03 has good Li + diffusion capability during charge/discharge, the D Li + value of the LANMO-0.03 (1.65 × 10 –11 cm 2 ∙s −1 ) is higher than that of the LiAl 0.15 Mn 1.85 O 4 (LAMO) (8.12 × 10 –12 cm 2 ∙s −1 ), and the charge transfer resistances of the LAMO and LANMO-0.03 samples are almost the same at 150 Ω before cycling but decrease to 130 Ω and 95 Ω after 1000 cycles at 1 C, respectively. These results demonstrate that the Al–Ni co-doped strategy can enhance the structural stability and provide stable Li + diffusion channel during the long cycles even at elevated temperature. Meanwhile, the facile solid-state combustion approach can also be extended to the preparation of other dual cation-doped electrode materials.

Lithium polyacrylate-coated LiMn2O4 cathode materials with excellent performance for lithium ion batteries

Zhang Qingtang,Xie Xiaolong,Fan Weifeng,Wang Xiaomei

A novel facile approach to coat LiMn 2 O 4 by lithium polyacrylate (PAALi) is demonstrated. The PAALi-coated LiMn 2 O 4 (LMO@2%PAALi) and LiMn 2 O 4 (LMO) are characterized by charge–discharge tests, X-ray diffraction (XRD), PAALi dissolving experiment, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetry (TG), and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES). XRD and FTIR analyses indicate that there are no clear differences between LMO@2%PAALi and LMO. PAALi dissolving experiment indicates that PAALi is indissolvable in LiPF 6 -EC/DMC/EMC electrolyte. TEM results reveal that LiMn 2 O 4 particles are coated by PAALi. ICP-OES results indicate that this stable PAALi coating can prevent the Mn ions dissolving from active LiMn 2 O 4 materials and then the stability of LiMn 2 O 4 crystals in electrolyte are greatly enhanced. These unique features ensure that LMO@2%PAALi possesses much better rate performance, higher discharge capacity, better cycling performance, and lower charge transfer resistance over LMO. The discharge capacity of LMO@2%PAALi at 0.2 C reaches up to 127.2 mAh g −1 at room temperature.

Surface coating of LiMn2O4 spinel via in situ hydrolysis route: effect of the solution

Yao Jinhan,Shen Chaoqi,Zhang Pinjie,Gregory Duncan H.,Wang Lianbang

Thin SiO 2 shell consisting of nano-SiO 2 particles can be deposited on to LiMn 2 O 4 through the facile hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) as a solution in either methanol or ethanol. The structure and surface morphologies of the modified and pristine materials were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The choice of solvent (methanol vs. ethanol) for TEOS hydrolysis has a profound effect on the physical and electrochemical properties of the resultant SiO 2 -coated LiMn 2 O 4 . Coated LiMn 2 O 4 demonstrated an improved cycling ability compared to the uncoated counterpart. Moreover, samples coated using a TEOS–methanol solution showed better cycling ability in extended potential windows and at an elevated temperature than that coated using ethanol.

Preparation of long cycle lifespan spinel LiMn2O4 cathode material by a dual-modified strategy

Ying Ji,Nian Wang,Yujiao Guo,Junming Guo,Mingwu Xiang,Xiaofang Liu,Wei Bai,Hongli Bai

Spinel LiMn 2 O 4 has been identified as a cathode material with extensive application potential for Li-ion batteries. However, during cycling, the Jahn−Teller effect and Mn dissolution have a substantial impact on its specific capacity and cycle span. Herein, combining Fe and Cr elements co-doping with single crystal truncated octahedron morphology is proposed to solve these problems. The Fe−Cr co-doping markedly restrains the Jahn−Teller effect, and promotes the development of crystal and selective growth of crystal surfaces in spinel LiMn 2 O 4 . The high exposure (111) surfaces of the truncated octahedron reduce the dissolution of Mn, and a tiny proportion of (110) and (100) surfaces increase the diffusion channels of Li + . HAADF-STEM characterization indicates that the Fe and Cr elements largely replace the Mn atoms at the octahedral 16d site. Because of these advantages, the optimal LiFe 0.05 Cr 0.08 Mn 1.95- x O 4 (LFCMO-8) delivers excellent electrochemical performance with 119.6 mAh·g −1 discharge capacity and 78.1% capacity retention after 500 cycles at 1 C. At comparatively higher current densities of 20 C and 30 C, the superior capacity retention ratios of 79.8% and 87.3% are still achieved after 2000 cycles. Even at 40 C, the LFCMO-8 sample can still reach 98.8% capacity retention rate after 2000 cycles. After 1000 cycles at 5 C, the LFCMO-8 sample still maintained a capacity retention of 45.4% at high temperature (55 °C). ICP-OES test combined with a V-shaped tube device indicates that the Mn dissolution of LCFMO-8 only accounted for 11.8% of LiFe 0.05 Mn 1.95 O 4 (LFMO). This study serves as a meaningful reference for the preparation of high-performance LiMn 2 O 4 cathode materials.

Synergistic lattice–interface stabilization in multi-cation doped LiMn2O4 for advanced Lithium-ion batteries

Yuhu Li,Yukun Pan,Jiacheng Guo,Sijie Yang,Yudong Yang,Haogang Xu,Hao Cai,Tao Liu,Jielin Liang,Caifang Cao

Despite extensive efforts to enhance the electrochemical performance of spinel LiMn 2 O 4 (LMO), the intrinsic Jahn-Teller effect and Mn dissolution still limit its high-rate and long-cycle applications. Here, we propose a multi-cation synergistic regulation strategy using Ni-Co-Al co-doping to simultaneously stabilize the bulk lattice and interface of LMO. The three dopants play complementary roles: Ni 2+ elevates the average Mn valence and activates redox couples, Co 3+ enhances electronic and ionic conductivity, while Al 3+ strengthens the Mn O framework through high-bond-energy Al O interactions. Structural and interfacial analyses reveal that the co-doping increases the Mn 4+ fraction from 41.51% to 52.12% and reduces residual alkali species on the surface, thereby mitigating side reactions and suppressing lattice distortion. The optimized sample (LNCAMO-3) demonstrates a high discharge capacity of 103.98 mAh g −1 with 87.11% retention after 200 cycles at 1C, and maintains 85.34 mAh g −1 even at 10C. More importantly, electrochemical kinetics analyses (CV, EIS and GITT) confirm accelerated Li + diffusion and reduced charge-transfer resistance, attributed to the cooperative lattice–interface stabilization effect. This work establishes a mechanistic understanding of multi-cation synergy in spinel cathodes and offers a general design principle for developing high-rate, long-life LiMn 2 O 4 -based materials.

Electrochemical lithium extraction from high Na/Li brine using LiMn2O4-Zn mixed-ion battery

Ying Hu,Yanan Wei,Qian Zhang,Xinyu Xu,Wenmeihui Zhao,Rongmei Liu,Guixiang Qian,Zhongliang Tian,Xiangwan Lai,Chao Yang

The extraction of lithium from high Na/Li ratio salt lakes brine remains challenging due to the similar physicochemical properties of Li⁺ and Na⁺. In this work, a LiMn 2 O 4 (LMO)-Zn mixed-ion battery system was constructed for electrochemical lithium extraction from high Na/Li brine. The electrochemical behavior and lithium extraction performance of the system under different Na⁺ concentrations, temperatures, and current densities were systematically investigated. The results demonstrated that the LMO-Zn system maintained stable electrochemical performance in 0.1 M LiCl + 4.0 M NaCl electrolyte. At discharge rates from 0.1 C to 0.75 C, the discharge potential only slightly decreased from 2.03 V to 1.94 V, indicating favorable rate capability and electrode stability. The titanium felt current collector exhibited an initial discharge capacity of 124.3 mAh g⁻¹ and a charge capacity of 139.5 mAh g⁻¹ . ICP analysis revealed that the Li⁺ concentration in the ZnCl 2 solution increased from 0 to 2.75 mg L⁻¹ after electrochemical cycling, while the Li⁺ concentration in the Li/Na mixed solution decreased from 10 to 6.87 mg L⁻¹ , confirming effective lithium extraction and enrichment behavior. Furthermore, XRD, XPS, SEM, and GITT analyses demonstrated the good reversibility and structural stability of the LMO electrode during cycling. This work provides a promising strategy for lithium extraction from high Na/Li ratio salt lakes brine.

Enhanced cycle ability of spinel LiMn2O4 by controlling the phase purity and structural strain

Jinhan Yao,Chaoqi Shen,Pinjie Zhang,Duncan H. Gregory,Lianbang Wang

By applying the annealing step during the solid-state synthesis, well-crystallized spinel LiMn 2 O 4 with high phase purity was fabricated. The sensitive effect of heating procedure on the structural and electrochemical properties of LiMn 2 O 4 product was investigated. It was found that preheat-treatment-calcinations-annealing process can effectively eliminate the impurity phase. The post-annealing process also leads to a better crystalline and suitable strain for the LiMn 2 O 4 product, which contributes to the enhanced cycling performance.

A Localized High-Concentration Water/Organic Hybrid Electrolyte for 2.5 V Li4Ti5O12/LiMn2O4 Batteries

Dezhong Liu,Xiang Li,Rundi Xiong,Ruiqi Ning,Chunbo Xu,Jintao Meng,Yunhui Huang,Lixia Yuan

The “solvent-in-salt” electrolytes for an aqueous system, including “water-in-salt” electrolytes and “bisolvent-in-salt” electrolytes, have shown significantly improved electrochemical stability toward low-voltage anodes and high-voltage cathodes. However, the heavy use of salt raises concerns of high cost, high viscosity, inferior wettability, and poor low-temperature performance. Herein, a “localized bisolvent-in-salt electrolyte” is proposed by introducing 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl-2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether (TTE) as the diluent to the high-concentration water/sulfolane hybrid (BSiS-SL) electrolytes, forming a ternary solvent-based electrolyte, Li(H2O)0.9SL1.3·TTE1.3 (HS-TTE). The introduction of TTE dilutes the compact ionic clusters, while the original primary Li+ solvation structure remains, and in the meantime, boosts the formation of a robust solid electrolyte interphase. As a result, a wide electrochemically stable window of 4.4 V is achieved. In comparison with the bisolvent BSiS-SL system, the trisolvent HS-TTE electrolyte exhibits a low salt concentration of 2.1 mol kg–1, resulting in drastically reduced viscosity, superb separator wettability, and largely improved low-temperature performance. The constructed 2.5 V Li4Ti5O12/LiMn2O4 cell shows an excellent capacity retention of 80.7% after 800 cycles, and the cell can even work at −30 °C. With these extraordinary advantages, the fundamental designing strategy of the HS-TTE electrolyte developed in this work can promote the practical applications of solvent-in-salt electrolytes.

ZnO-coated LiMn2O4 cathode material for lithium-ion batteries synthesized by a combustion method

Li Qi-Ling,Xu Wang-Qiong,Bai Hong-Li,Guo Jun-Ming,Su Chang-Wei

ZnO-coated LiMn 2 O 4 cathode materials were prepared by a combustion method using glucose as fuel. The phase structures, size of particles, morphology, and electrochemical performance of pristine and ZnO-coated LiMn 2 O 4 powders are studied in detail by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), galvanostatic charge-discharge test, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). XRD patterns indicated that surface-modified ZnO have no obvious effect on the bulk structure of the LiMn 2 O 4 . TEM and XPS proved ZnO formation on the surface of the LiMn 2 O 4 particles. Galvanostatic charge/discharge test and rate performance showed that the ZnO coating could improve the capacity and cycling performance of LiMn 2 O 4 . The 2 wt% ZnO-coated LiMn 2 O 4 sample exhibited an initial discharge capacity of 112.8 mAh g −1 with a capacity retention of 84.1 % after 500 cycles at 0.5 C. Besides, a good rate capability at different current densities from 0.5 to 5.0 C can be acquired. CV and EIS measurements showed that the ZnO coating effectively reduced the impacts of polarization and charge transfer resistance upon cycling.

Multiphase combustion synthesis and enhanced performance of LiMn2O4 nanoparticles using CNTs as a fuel

Xiaolong Xie,Xiaomei Wang,Qingtang Zhang,Fuling Tang

LiMn2O4 nanoparticles were successfully prepared using suitable dosage carbon nanotubles (CNTs) as a fuel through multiphase combustion synthesis. The effects of CNTs on the structure and electrochemical performance of LiMn2O4 were investigated. Rate performance test demonstrates that CNTs dosage greatly affect the electrochemical behaviour of LiMn2O4 and LiMn2O4 prepared by choosing suitable CNTs dosage (7%) as a fuel (C7%-LMO) shows high rate charge–discharge capability. X-ray diffraction results indicate that C7%-LMO has the smallest distortion degree in the crystal, compared to LiMn2O4 prepared without CNTs (C0%-LMO) and LiMn2O4 prepared with 10% CNTs (C10%-LMO). SEM results reveal that the average particle size of C7%-LMO is about 100 nm, which is the smallest among the three samples (C0%-LMO, C7%-LMO and C10%-LMO). This unique microscopic features guarantee C7%-LMO possesses the highest discharge capacity, the best cycling performance and the lowest charge transfer resistance among the three samples.
