The previous work has demonstrated that tetrabutylammonium chloride (TBAC) has an obvious enhancement effect on electrochemically mediated regeneration of MEA monoamine solution. Building upon this finding, this study expands the TBAC-assisted strategy from a monoamine system to an MEA/DEA mixed-amine system, systematically investigating the influence of key parameters on the regeneration performance of electrochemically mediated MEA/DEA mixed amine solutions with TBAC additive. By optimizing the amine type, MEA/DEA ratio, and Cu 2+ concentration, an efficient TBAC/MEA/DEA ternary system is constructed. The results show that under optimal conditions with an MEA/DEA mass ratio of 1:2 and a Cu 2+ concentration of 0.10 mol·mol −1 amine, the system achieves a desorption energy consumption as low as 14.55 kJ·mol −1 CO 2 , which is 16.9% lower than that of the TBAC-free MEA/DEA system. Characterization analysis confirms that CO 2 is released through the decomposition of carbamate, and the introduction of DEA alters the electrode reaction behavior, thereby facilitating the redox process. The result is the formation of columnar crystals on the cathode and a flower-like structure on the anode. This study provides a practical pathway for low-carbon capture in industrial sectors.

To address the high energy consumption, insufficient thermal stability, and lack of systematic optimization strategies of conventional aqueous alkanolamine CO 2 absorbents, this study developed a blended monoethanolamine/ethylene glycol (EG) absorbent system by replacing water with EG. The CO 2 absorption performance was systematically investigated. Validated kinetic and thermodynamic models were integrated into a robust coupled model to simulate absorption behavior. Based on the coupled model, two optimization strategies for the CO 2 absorption process were proposed: determining the optimal absorption temperature to maximize absorption capacity under fixed CO 2 partial pressure and absorption time; identifying the optimal temperature to minimize absorption time under fixed CO 2 partial pressure and absorption capacity. The research results indicate that both optimization strategies exhibit significant optimization effects under a variety of absorption conditions. This study provides a vital theoretical framework and experimental foundation for the design of industrial CO 2 capture absorbents and the optimization of process parameters.

To achieve high-performance anion exchange membranes (AEMs) with superior conductivity and stability, a series of novel poly(biphenyl piperidinium) (PBP-n-Pip) membranes are synthesized by tethering cationic groups to the backbone utilizing flexible hydrophobic alkyl spacers with various lengths. All of the membranes exhibit excellent film-forming ability and tensile strength (42.34–53.49 MPa). Well-defined microphase separation is confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The PBP-6-Pip membrane exhibits the conductivity of 117.1 mS cm −1 at 80 °C due to the most excellent microphase-separated morphology and highest water uptake. The long-term alkali resistance of AEMs can be improved by extending the length of the flexible alkyl chains appropriately. After immersion in 2 M NaOH at 80 °C for 1500 h, the initial conductivity of PBP-6-Pip with intermediate spacer chains and PBP-8-Pip with longer spacer chains both remains above 84%. Furthermore, the PBP-6-Pip membrane with the highest conductivity achieves a peak power density of 307 mW cm −2 at 80 °C in the H 2 /O 2 single fuel cell. A long-term life test of this MEA shows a voltage decay rate of 2.87 mV/h over 40 h of operation under 0.2 A cm −2 at 60 °C.

To get a more accurate mass transfer coefficient model of CO2 into aqueous monoethanolamine (MEA)/N,N-dimethylethanolamine (DMEA) solution in a packed column, the Henry’s law constant, equilibrium CO2 solubility, volumetric overall mass transfer coefficient (KGav), overall gas-phase mass transfer coefficient (KG), and effective gas–liquid interfacial area (av) were comprehensively studied. The Henry’s law constant was obtained using a jacketed stirred glass reactor, and the equilibrium CO2 solubility was investigated using a bubbling absorption reactor. Additionally, the mass transfer performance was measured and evaluated experimentally in a packed column with DX-Type structured packing in terms of KGav, KG, and av. These experiments were conducted under the MEA/DMEA concentration of 6 kmol·m–3 with ratio of 5:1. The dynamic changes of solubility, species concentration, and absorption heat of solution were analyzed under different CO2 loadings. The experimental results showed that the relationship of successive absorption without synergistic effect from the perspective of equilibrium state for the MEA/DMEA solution and the blended MEA/DMEA solution can reduce the CO2 absorption heat compared to that of MEA solution. Furthermore, a predicted model of KGav, which should be suitable for different solution systems with DX-Type structured packings in a packed column, was also proposed and developed based on the KG model and av model in this work.

NH3 has attracted increasing attention as a fundamental material and promising hydrogen carrier. The uptake of NH3 from NH3-containing exhausted gas presents economic and environmental issues. In this study, [MEA][SCN] was paired with glycerol, acetamide, formamide, phenol (PhOH), ethylene glycol, urea, glycerolformal, or 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone to construct deep eutectic solvents (DESs) for effective NH3 absorption and NH3/CO2 separation investigation. All of the [MEA][SCN]-based DESs exhibited good NH3 absorption and separation performance. Notably, [MEA][SCN]-PhOH (1:1) realized an atmospheric capacity of 0.2459 g of NH3·g–1 DES and NH3/CO2 selectivity of 194.53 at 303.15 K. Based on the experimental data, a new process for NH3 recovery from melamine tail gas using [MEA][SCN]-PhOH (1:1) (DES-M) was developed and simulated from operational parameters optimization, heat exchange network design, and economic evaluation. DES-M can recycle NH3 with purity of 99.6% and save 82.01% utility costs compared to the water scrubbing method. The heat integration network design in DES-M reduces 66.94% low-pressure steam and 9.00% separation costs. Specially, the optimized DES-M can exceed 59% after-tax rate of return using renewable energy.

Despite being a mature technology, the large-scale deployment of amine-based solvents for post-combustion carbon capture is limited by their high energy demand for regeneration, slow absorption-desorption kinetics, and susceptibility to degradation, underscoring the need for more efficient and viable solutions. This study developed an innovative hybrid absorption system that synergistically integrated monoethanolamine (MEA) with imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) and zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) to overcome these limitations. Through systematic optimization of MEA-IL binary blends and the subsequent incorporation of ZIFs, the optimal types and concentrations of ILs and ZIFs were identified, along with key process parameters. The resulting selected formulation, 30 wt% MEA blended with 0.15 g/mL [BMIM][Br] and 0.125 g/mL ZIF-67, delivered substantial performance gains compared to 30 wt% MEA benchmark. The maximum absorption rate and capacity increased by 106.4% and 76.3%, respectively, while the desorption rate and capacity were enhanced by 51.1% and 63.4%. 13 C and 1 H NMR spectroscopy provided clear evidence of the chemical transformations during absorption, enabling the proposal and confirmation of a novel synergistic mechanism in which ILs and ZIFs complementarily enhance the capture process. Moreover, the developed composite system retained over 80% of its initial capacity over six consecutive cycles and showed reliable performance in scale-up experiments up to 40× the baseline, confirming its robustness for industrial implementation. This work elucidates the synergistic mechanisms underlying the MEA-IL-ZIF system and demonstrates its potential as a scalable, energy-efficient, and durable solution for industrial CO 2 capture.

Cardiovascular toxicity is a key safety indicator that has to be evaluated in the process of new drug development. To enable high-throughput and multiparametric assessment of cardiomyocyte function, we developed a 32-well high-throughput microelectrode array (MEA) platform integrated with electrical stimulation. Electrode surface modification with PEDOT:PSS-MWCNT nanocomposites significantly enhanced electrochemical performance and signal acquisition fidelity, reducing electrode impedance by 37-fold compared to unmodified Au electrodes. Notably, the built-in electrical stimulation effectively promoted electrophysiological and structural maturation of human iPSC-cardiomyocytes, demonstrated by a 15.47% increase in sarcomere length and 1.73-fold upregulation of connexin-43 expression. The platform's utility was further validated through cardiotoxicity assessment of two representative ion channel modulators, E-4031 (a selective hERG channel blocker) and verapamil (a clinically used calcium channel blocker). Collectively, this study presents an integrated platform that combines functional monitoring with cellular maturation enhancement, offering a powerful tool for cardiotoxicity screening and disease modeling.

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts based on M-N-C materials often exhibit promising activity in aqueous electrochemical tests but suffer from rapid degradation under practical fuel cell operation. This discrepancy can originate from different reaction environments, where conventional measurements fail to reproduce the high flux of reactive oxygen species (ROS) present at the triple-phase boundary in membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs). Here, we establish an operando protocol that quantitatively bridges this gap by determining the concentration of H2O2 and derived ROS under realistic fuel cell conditions and then reproducing such oxidative environments in aqueous media via H2O2 injection. Using CoCe-NC as model catalysts, in which Co sites act as stable ROS generators and Ce sites serve as radical scavengers, we demonstrate that atomic-scale proximity between ROS generation and scavenging sites critically governs radical mitigation efficiency and catalyst stability. By tuning inter-site distances, we show that enhanced durability arises from accelerated and localized ROS removal rather than intrinsic stabilization of the carbon matrix. This work establishes a generalizable framework for quantifying and reproducing realistic oxidative environments, enabling mechanistic investigation of ROS-driven degradation that is inaccessible by conventional methods, and providing guidance for the rational design of durable PGM-free ORR catalysts.

Shipboard CO 2 capture (SCC) systems using MEA/[TBA][Br] solvent lack experimental studies and efficient data-driven optimization frameworks that minimize regeneration energy while maintaining high CO 2 capture rates. This study conducts cyclic experiments and develops a deep neural network (DNN)-based framework to optimize operating conditions for shipboard-relevant carbon capture. In the first stage, 70 experimental samples are collected under varying [TBA][Br] concentration, desorber temperature, and liquid-to-gas (L/G) ratio to train a surrogate DNN model. This model is used to formulate an optimization problem, from which an optimal operating zone is identified. In the second stage, 28 additional experiments are performed within this operating zone, and the full 98-sample dataset is used to train a refined DNN model, featuring three hidden layers with hyperparameters tuned via grid search and evaluated using an 80−20 training-test split. Optimization using the refined DNN identifies the optimal condition at [TBA][Br] concentration of 2.96 wt%, a desorber temperature of 120 C, and an L/G ratio of 1.73 kg/kg, corresponding to more than 90% CO 2 capture and a regeneration energy of 2.94 GJ/t CO 2 . This optimal performance corresponds to an 11.40%–34.87% reduction in regeneration energy compared to baseline MEA in this study and MEA-based SCC systems from the literature. The refined DNN demonstrates strong predictive capability, achieving MAPE values of 1.27% (training) and 1.41% (test) for CO 2 capture rate, and 0.83% (training) and 1.04% (test) for regeneration energy. Sensitivity analysis highlights the influence of all three variables: [TBA][Br] addition reduces sensible and vaporization heat requirements, higher L/G ratios improve CO 2 capture rates, and elevated desorber temperatures simultaneously enhance CO 2 capture rates and lower regeneration energy. Moreover, ATR-FTIR analysis over 15 cycles confirms solvent chemical stability with no evidence of chemical degradation. This work demonstrates an effective machine learning-enabled optimization strategy for SCC with MEA/[TBA][Br] solvent and offers insights into developing energy-efficient SCC systems and a framework extendable to other CO 2 emission sources.

ChCl-MEA DES was used to absorb CO 2 from gasification syngas consisting of CO 2 , CO, CH 4 , and H 2 . This study investigated the effect of water addition on CO 2 absorption capabilities of ChCl-MEA DES with different mole ratios of ChCl to MEA, and different absorption temperatures. It was found that water addition had a positive effect on CO 2 solubility of ChCl-MEA DES, with the maximum obtained value of 0.5 mol-CO 2 /mol-DES for aqueous ChCl-MEA DES with 75%vol water at absorption temperature of 40 °C and pressure of 9 bar. In general, water addition increases CO 2 solubility and absorption rate of ChCl-MEA DES. ChCl-MEA DES 1:5 mol ratio was able to benefit from water addition up to 75%vol water content. While ChCl-MEA 1:10 had its CO 2 solubility increase with water addition up to 50%vol, after which, it declined. Investigation into water addition at different absorption temperatures revealed that water addition at 40 °C produced the most significant CO 2 solubility enhancement compared to water addition at 20 °C and 60 °C. This might be caused by the tradeoff between the effects of high temperature in decreasing ChCl-MEA DES viscosity and lowering its CO 2 solubility. Highest CO 2 /CO selectivity for ChCl-MEA DES 1:5 was found to be around 34.6, CO 2 /CH 4 was 26.7, and CO 2 /H 2 was 4. Water addition was found to have slight reducing effect on the CO 2 selectivity of ChCl-MEA DES.

In order to establish an accurate kinetic model for the aqueous amine blends, monoethanolamine (MEA), 2-(ethylamino) ethanol (EAE), and 3-(diethylamino)-1-propanol (3DEA1P) have been chosen as a typical CO 2 absorption trisolvents. The reaction kinetics of aqueous amine blends with carbon dioxide have been investigated first combining experiments and molecular simulations. The stopped-flow technology has been used to obtain the observed reaction rate constant of the overall reactions over the temperature range of 293 to 313 K and at different amine concentrations. A theoretical kinetic model, based on the first-principles quantum-mechanical simulations, has been put forward to interpret the reactions between CO 2 and the aqueous trisolvent amine blends systems. The proposed model, based on the zwitterion mechanism and the base-catalyzed mechanism, shows good prediction with an acceptable absolute average deviation (AAD) of 6.32%, and has been found to be satisfactory in determining the kinetics of the involved complicated reactions.

The fuel cells have outstanding advantages in the new energy application, but the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) of fuel cells is difficult to produce at low-cost and large-scale, which restricts their applications. To simplify the preparation of MEA, for the first time, we successfully develop a novel impregnation-reduction method combined with galvanic replacement to grow Ag/Pt bimetallic nanocatalyst onto a Nafion membrane (Nafion-Ag/Pt membrane), and the deposited Ag/Pt catalyst is very stable, which can be directly used as a novel ultra-thin catalyst layer in MEA. This novel method possesses mild conditions, simple procedure, good repeatability and practicability in a large-scale production. Moreover, a very low Pt loading amount of Nafion-Ag/Pt membrane can be achieved by regulating experimental conditions, which brings excellent Pt utilization. Therefore, the MEA made from Nafion-Ag/Pt membrane exhibits a Pt mass specific power (1.519 W mgPt−1) that is 12.3 times higher than that of a conventional MEA. These results demonstrate that this novel impregnation-reduction method can reduce the cost of fuel cells by reducing the difficulty of MEA preparation and the Pt loading amount of MEA and simultaneously enhancing its performance, which shows great potential in fuel cell application.
