In general, majority of MOFs are powder, which limit their applications. In this study, the highly stable Zr-based MOF-808 and its thiol-modified MOF-808-SH were selected as precursors, and then they were wrapped by sodium alginate hydrogel via a dripping strategy. Based on these, MOF/hydrogel composite beads (Alg-MOF-808, Alg-MOF-808-SH) with 3D network structure were prepared successfully. Due to its excellent adsorption properties and easy recovery, they were employed as effective environmental functional materials for the adsorption of Hg (II). The adsorption capacities of Hg (II) were 170.52 mg‧g −1 and 221.73 mg‧g −1 respectively and they can achieve adsorption equilibrium in a short time. The adsorption stability of Alg-MOF-808-SH was studied at different pH as well. In addition, the removal efficiency of composite beads for Hg (II) was almost unaffected by other coexisting ions, displaying good adsorption selectivity. Furthermore, the removal efficiency only decreased by 10.4% after 5 cycles, indicating that the as-prepared materials have high recycling efficiency. The results demonstrated that the MOF/hydrogel composite beads have a certain application potential for mercury removal in actual wastewater.

Catechin is a natural flavonoid with antioxidant, anticarcinogenic and anti-inflammatory properties. They can be used to treat or prevent human health problems. However, excessive intake of catechin can also be harmful to the human body. It is crucial to find a method for quantitative detection of catechin. The carboxyl-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes were intercalated into the MXene layers to form a composite material with excellent electrical conductivity, and then MOF-808 with adsorption sites was further loaded on MXene/MWCNTs-COOH to synthesize MXene/MWCNTs-COOH/MOF-808 with excellent catalytic properties. Based on this, an electrochemical sensor was constructed for the detection of catechin. The CA sensor constructed in this work exhibited excellent analytical performance, good linear range (0.5–21.53 μM) and low detection limit (0.05 μM). It was also used for the detection of CA in green tea and beverages, which exhibited good recoveries (99.46–99.71 % and 96.46 % ~ 101.33 %) and the relative standard deviations (1.33–2.55 % and 0.07 % ~ 1.57 %).

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are representative phosphate ester substrates, whose efficient hydrolysis critically depends on cooperative Lewis and Brønsted acid catalysis as observed in natural hydrolases. However, most artificial catalysts primarily emphasize Lewis acidic metal centers while the regulatory role of Brønsted acidity in hydrolysis nanozymes has rarely been systematically investigated or mechanistically validated. Here, we report a hydroxyl-modified metal-organic framework nanozyme (MOF-808-OH), in which the catalytic microenvironment is engineered by introducing hydroxyl groups into the organic linkers of MOF-808 to enhance Brønsted acidity. As a result, MOF-808-OH exhibits a 1.9-fold increase in phosphate ester hydrolysis activity compared with pristine MOF-808. Combined experimental investigations and density functional theory calculations reveal that strengthened Brønsted acid sites facilitate substrate activation and transition-state stabilization during P-O bond cleavage. Benefiting from this enhanced catalytic efficiency, MOF-808-OH enables reliable colorimetric quantification of p -nitrophenyl phosphate ( p -NPP) with a linear range of 5-1000 μg mL −1 and a limit of detection of 2.5 μg mL −1 . Furthermore, the hydrolyzed phosphate can be subsequently captured via Ca 2+ -induced precipitation, offering a feasible route for downstream phosphorus utilization. This work demonstrates the key role of Brønsted acidity in hydrolysis nanozymes, which differs from traditional studies that only focus on Lewis acid sites. The establishment of structure-activity relationship provides a new and transferable design principle for high-performance MOF-based hydrolytic nanozymes.

Highly effective extraction of uranium from seawater calls for the development of adsorbents with both high capacity and selectivity. Defective Zr-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are potential candidates for uranium sequestration due to their high surface area and tunable active sites. In this work, MOF-808 samples with adjustable missing linker defects were successfully prepared by manipulating the concentration of the carboxylic acid modulator. Impressively, MOF-808 with the highest defect density, namely M808-4, showed excellent selectivity towards uranium in comparison with coexisting competitive ions in seawater. Moreover, M808-4 exhibited remarkable uranium extraction performance in real seawater with an uptake capacity of 5.83 mg/g in 28 d, which is 10.41 times higher than that for vanadium. The results indicated that the abundant Zr unsaturated active sites formed by defect inducing strategy are the key to the efficient capture of uranyl ions. This study highlighted the advantages of defect engineering in MOF based materials for highly selective uranium extraction from seawater.

The promotion of Fenton process in organic wastewater treatment has been hindered by the disposal of large amounts of iron sludge derived from the excess addition of ferrous salt. The operation of the Fenton reaction could be maintained using trace level Fe II through the effective acceleration reaction of active hydrogen. However, the H 2 which is the precursor of active hydrogen is insoluble in water. Herein, the composite catalyst Pd/MOF-808(Zr) was introduced into the H 2 -Fenton system to enhance the adsorption and activation of this reducing gas. In this novel improved Fenton system called MHACF-MOF-808(Zr), the hydroxyl radical would be unceasingly produced based on the unceasingly recycling of FeII/FeIII at normal temperature and pressure. 15 mg L −1 sulfamethazine could be thoroughly degraded during 2 h reaction process in the initial condition of 60 mL min −1 H 2 , 20 μmol L −1 Fe II , pH 3, 20 mmol L −1 H 2 O 2 and 2 g L −1 Pd/MOF-808(Zr). And so did 10 mg L −1 2,4-Dichlorophenol. The activity and stability of Pd/MOF-808(Zr) could be maintained after at least 6 consecutive reaction cycles. It provides new insight for improving the inherent shortcoming of the Fenton reaction which will generate large amounts of iron sludge.

Carbon capture is widely recognized as a pivotal technology for alleviating the accelerating impacts of global warming. Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) that embed metal organic frameworks (MOFs) offer a compelling route to high-performance separations, and MOF-808 stands out among them because of its outstanding chemical stability and environmentally friendly synthesis. In this study, the defect density of MOF-808 was tuned by varying the formic acid modulator: Higher modulator loading produced MOF-808 with higher linker defect density. After synthesis, MOF-808 was washed with either water or ethanol and then incorporated into PEBAX matrix through a drying-free process that ensured uniform dispersion. Washing with ethanol altered the pore coordination environment of MOF-808, partially replacing formate with ethoxide. Introducing an appropriate amount of formic acid created additional open metal sites and increased both CO 2 permeability and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity; however, excessive formic acid produced too many defects, causing severe pore blockage and consequently lowering the CO 2 permeability. The drying-free method, by preventing MOF aggregation and ensuring homogeneous dispersion, led to a 38 % increase in CO 2 /N 2 selectivity compared with the conventional drying method. The ethoxide substitution induced by ethanol washing occupied part of the pore volume, leading to a reduction in CO 2 permeability. The optimized MOF-808/PEBAX MMM achieved a CO 2 permeability of 150 Barrer and a CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 76.4, both markedly higher than those of the pristine polymer. These results highlight a sustainable, scalable strategy for producing high-efficiency membranes for post-combustion CO 2 capture.

The Zr-based metal–organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) exhibit remarkable catalytic efficacy in the detoxification of nerve agents and their simulants. However, their practical military applications remain limited due to the poor processability inherent to their powder morphology. In this study, we fabricated a flexible hierarchical FeCoOx@PAN@MOF-808-IMDC composite fiber membrane with synergistic catalytic effects through a two-step fabrication strategy: (1) in situ growth of MOF-808 on electrospun FeCoOx@PAN fibers, followed by (2) postsynthetic modification with 4,5-imidazoledicarboxylic acid (IMDC) ligands. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that IMDC grafting reduces both the adsorption energy of DMNP on Zr clusters and the activation barrier for bond cleavage, leading to significantly accelerated reaction rates. Consequently, the optimized FeCoOx@PAN@MOF-808-IMDC exhibits exceptional DMNP hydrolysis performance, achieving complete conversion within 1 min and an ultrafast half-life of 6 s, along with high durability. This work effectively addresses the application limitations of powdered Zr-MOFs in protective systems and provides a viable pathway for integrating MOF materials into protective equipment for nerve agent detoxification.

Light-responsive proton conductors represent an attractive research direction owing to their potential in intelligent devices and responsive sensing applications. Herein, we present a cooperative functionalization strategy to construct an MOF-based light-regulated proton-conducting material, MOF-808-AZOA-IL, by integrating azobenzene-4,4′-dicarboxylic acid (AZOA) and an ionic liquid (IL) into the MOF-808 framework. AZOA serves as a photoactive unit to endow light responsiveness, while the IL molecules form a continuous proton-conducting network, enhancing the concentration and mobility of protons. This synergy results in a proton-conduction on/off ratio up to ∼2000 of MOF-808-AZOA-IL, with excellent stability over repeated UV light on/off cycles. This work demonstrates that the incorporation of AZOA and IL synergistically enhances the light-regulated proton conduction of MOF-808, offering a reliable strategy for designing advanced stimuli-responsive proton-conductive systems.

A phosphate ion (Pi) is usually considered as an important index of eutrophication in water and can cause great harm to the water ecological environment. In this work, MOF-808(Zr/Ce) was synthesized simply for phosphate detection and removal. MOF-808(Zr/Ce) with oxidase-like activity can oxidize 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). The colorimetric sensing of phosphate was performed based on the enhancement of the oxidase-like activity of MOF-808(Zr/Ce). The linear detection range for phosphate detection was 11–581 μM, and the detection limit (LOD) was 3.7 μM. The MOF-808(Zr/Ce)/CNF (cellulose nanofibers) flexible film synthesized by the filtration method also enables the rapid identification of phosphate. Besides, the phosphate adsorption performance of MOF-808(Zr/Ce) was also investigated. The adsorption capacities are 54.9, 65.1, and 68.5 mg g−1 at 298, 308, and 318 K, respectively. The results show that MOF-808(Zr/Ce) has great potential for phosphate detection and removal.

In order to address corrosion and pollution problems of liquid acids and limitations of traditional solid acids, sulfated MOF-808-SO4catalysts were developed by creating unsaturated sites in MOF-808 for sulfate grafting with ligand defect engineering. Characterization verified framework integrity, successful sulfate coordination, and maintenance of high surface areas and tunable porosity. Temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia (NH3-TPD) establishes a clear consistent trend between defect density and the concentration as well as the strength of acid sites, indicating that a higher degree of ligand deficiency promotes the formation of more abundant and stronger acid centers. For esterification of acetic acid with n-butanol, the catalyst prepared by replacing 40 mol% of BTC with BDC achieved ≥99% conversion of acetic acid under mild conditions of 2.0 wt% catalyst loading and 1:2 alcohol/acid molar ratio at 120 °C for 6 h, outperforming conventional solid acids. This performance stems from high-density strong Brønsted acid sites strongly coordinated at defects and an open pore structure facilitating diffusion. The catalyst was easily recovered by ethanol washing and maintained stable activity over five cycles without loss of catalytic capability. This work suggests defect engineering as an effective strategy for tuning acidity and catalytic performance in MOF-based solid acids for green esterification.

High-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFCs) usually show some obvious advantages like higher energy efficiency, cheaper hydrogen purification cost and simpler heat/water management systems. Design and synthesis of high-performance high-temperature proton exchange membranes (HT-PEMs) with excellent proton conductivity meanwhile enhanced mechanical properties still remain a huge challenge in HT-PEMFCs field. Herein, we designed and prepared a new proton conductor HPW@MOF-808. Subsequently, HPW@MOF-808 has been doped into poly(terphenyl piperidine) (PTP) polymer and some exceptionally well HT-PEMs have been prepared. Thanks to the transformation from zirconium-oxygen clusters of MOF-808 to ZrP 2 O 7 , the composite membranes show higher proton conduction and greater tensile strength. The PTP-2PM has a peak power density of 861.5 mW cm -2 , making it a promising candidate for HT-PEMFCs. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that ZrP 2 O 7 has stronger hydrogen bonds interactions with the main chain, leading to a denser hydrogen bonding network within the membrane and can effectively limit the separation of the membrane backbone. Moreover, the regular arrangement of HPW help to construct an additional proton transfer channel. In this work, a novel inorganic filler for HT-PEMs is proposed, it offers a fresh approach to developing high-performance HT-PEMs.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have garnered significant attention in adsorption desulfurization due to their high density of adsorption sites and permanent porosity. However, despite the abundant adsorption sites in Zr-based MOF-808, its relatively large pore channels and volumes may limit the adsorption efficiency for smaller molecules such as thiophene. Incorporating room-temperature ionic liquids (rILs) into MOF structures offers a promising strategy to address a key limitation of rILs-their high viscosity at ambient conditions, which often restricts mass transfer rates during liquid-liquid extraction. In this study, an IL-modified MOF-808 was synthesized to assess its performance in desulfurization. Characterization results confirmed that the rILs successfully infiltrated the MOF-808 pores without changing its framework integrity. Adsorption properties for thiophene in ILs/MOF-808 composites were investigated through Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations alongside experimental adsorption measurements conducted at 298 K. Further Monte Carlo (MC) simulations demonstrated that the presence of ILs enhanced the affinity for thiophene and increased the number of accessible adsorption sites within the composite. The adsorption capacity of ILs/MOF-808–20 remained stable over four adsorption-regeneration cycles using n-octane as the solvent, providing a potentially feasible solution for deep desulfurization.
