Magnesium hydride (MgH₂) is deemed to a prospective high-capacity solid-state hydrogen storage material. However, slow kinetics and high desorption temperature severely limit its practical application. In this study, V₂O₃/C nanospheres composed of two-dimensional nanosheets were especially synthesized and employed as catalysts to enhance the hydrogen storage performance of MgH₂. The initial dehydrogenation temperature of the MgH₂-V₂O₃/C system was reduced to 200.4°C, with a dehydrogenation capacity of 6.69 wt%. At 300°C, the MgH₂ with 10 wt% V₂O₃/C catalyst could release 6.3 wt% H₂ in just 7 min and could start hydrogen absorption reaction at room temperature. The dehydrogenation activation energy (Ea) of the MgH₂-10 wt% V₂O₃/C system was calculated to be 88.96 ± 4.66 kJ/mol, representing an approximate 34.8 % reduction compared to the 136.43 ± 4.32 kJ/mol of ball-milled (BM) MgH₂. Moreover, the sample demonstrated exceptional cyclic stability, remaining the hydrogen storage capacity of 99.5 % after 30 cycles. In this system, in-situ elemental vanadium serves as the catalytic active site and plays a crucial catalytic role. Additionally, the carbon material helps prevent the agglomeration of MgH₂. The combined effect of these two components significantly improves the kinetic property for the MgH₂ system.

In this study, alkali hydroxides (NaOH, LiOH, KOH) were attempted as new-type catalytic additives to improve the hydrogen storage properties of MgH 2 by ball milling . It is shown that the additives readily react with the MgH 2 to form perovskite-structured NaMgH 3 and KMgH 3 , but not the LiMgH 3 . Although the in-situ formed perovskite hydrides remain stable during hydriding/dehydriding cycles, both NaMgH 3 and KMgH 3 show predominant catalytic role on the hydriding and dehydriding of MgH 2 . In contrast, the LiOH modified MgH 2 presents much inferior sorption kinetics because of the absence of LiMgH 3 . The catalytic mechanism of perovskite hydrides can be explained by the high hydrogen mobility in the perovskite structure . This study shows that such cheap hydroxides could be used as efficient catalysts to improve the hydrogen storage properties of high-capacity metal hydrides and complex hydrides .

Synergic effects of rare earth-magnesium based hydrides (LaH 3 -MgH 2 ) on thermal dehydrogenation of potassium borohydride (KBH 4 ) are discussed in the paper. Comparing to above 675 K for the LaH 3 -MgH 2 or KBH 4 , the dehydrogenation temperature can be decreased to 346 K for the composites (LaH 3 -MgH 2 -KBH 4 ). The apparent activation energy of desorption process for the mixture is also greatly reduced. On the other hand, the products in the temperature programmed desorption process are also illustrated.

While borohydrides , such as NaBH 4 , were often used as supplements to improve hydrogen storage properties of Mg/MgH 2 systems, they have long suffered from high decomposition temperature and irreversible dehydrogenation process. Here, we report that NaBH 4 can reversibly serve as a hydrogen storage host and reactant for Mg/MgH 2 systems under mild reaction conditions with the help of Al/AlH 3 . 90 wt%MgH 2 –5 wt.%AlH 3 –5 wt.%NaBH 4 (M-5AB) has been successfully synthesized using the conventional mechanical alloying technique. The dehydrogenation activation energy and enthalpy are 20% and 9% reduced than those of pure Mg/MgH 2 . After 10 hydrogen absorption and desorption cycles, the hydrogen storage capacity of M-5AB can reach 6.35 wt%. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the transmission electron microscope (TEM) measurements revealed that the interface of additives and Mg/MgH 2 decompose to Mg 17 Al 12 , MgAlB 4 and NaH phases. The Mg 17 Al 12 and MgAlB 4 phases reduces the barrier of free energies of hydrogenated and dehydrogenated states, helping NaBH 4 to recover after rehydrogenation. These discoveries indicate that Al species can boost the decomposition and reformation of NaBH 4 , providing a wider degree of freedom for the material design of Mg-based hydrogen storage materials .

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) is considered a promising solid-state hydrogen storage material owing to its high hydrogen storage capacity and abundant Mg resources. However, its practical application is still limited by sluggish low-temperature hydrogen absorption/desorption kinetics, high dehydrogenation temperature, and insufficient cycling stability. Although NaNbO 3 -based catalysts have recently shown potential for improving the hydrogen storage performance of MgH 2 , the effect of processing-controlled NaNbO 3 morphology on catalyst dispersion, interfacial contact, and hydrogen absorption/desorption kinetics remains unclear. Herein, morphology-regulated NaNbO 3 catalysts were synthesized via a hydrothermal-calcination route by varying the hydrothermal temperature and introduced into MgH 2 through high-energy ball milling. Among the investigated samples, the composite containing 7 wt% NaNbO 3 prepared at 200°C (MgH 2 –7 wt.% NaNbO 3 -200) exhibited fast and reversible hydrogen storage performance, absorbing 5.0 wt% H 2 within 12 s at 200°C and desorbing 6.0 wt% H 2 within 6 min at 300°C. After 30 cycles, it retained 6.12 wt% H 2 , corresponding to 89.7% of its initial dehydrogenation capacity, and showed an apparent dehydrogenation activation energy of 86.96 kJ mol −1 . The enhanced performance is mainly attributed to improved MgH 2 /NaNbO 3 interfacial contact, together with a possible contribution from partially reduced Nb-containing species formed during repeated hydrogen sorption.

Ni/CeO 2 @C catalyst with abundant oxygen vacancies was prepared. • The MgH 2 + 4 wt% Ni/Ceo 2 @C composite releases 6 wt% H 2 in 50 min at 613 K. • Activation energy: 95.77 kJ/mol; Peak dehydrogenation: 593 K. • Performance enhanced by synergistic Ni/CeO 2 /C roles. A carbon-supported nickel/cerium dioxide composite catalyst (Ni/CeO 2 @C) was synthesized through a hydrothermal–calcination route and introduced into magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) at loadings of 2, 4, 6, and 8 wt%. The phase composition and microstructure of the catalyst and MgH 2 -based composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), while their hydrogen absorption–desorption behavior was evaluated at 553–613 K. Among the investigated compositions, MgH 2 + 4 wt% Ni/CeO 2 @C exhibited the most favorable overall balance of reversible hydrogen capacity, sorption kinetics, apparent thermodynamic parameters, and particle dispersion. At 613 K, the composite achieved hydrogen absorption and desorption capacities of 6.45 and 6.16 wt%, respectively, and released nearly 6.0 wt% H 2 within 50 min. At 573 K, it absorbed 5.81 wt% H 2 and released approximately 5.4 wt% H 2 within 100 min. The apparent dehydrogenation activation energy was 85.96 kJ mol −1 . Van't Hoff analysis yielded apparent absorption and desorption enthalpy changes of −81.32 and + 83.38 kJ mol −1 H 2 , respectively. After 20 consecutive absorption–desorption cycles, the composite retained approximately 94.04% of its absorption capacity and 95.41% of its desorption capacity. These results indicate that a 4 wt% Ni/CeO 2 @C loading provides a favorable combination of hydrogen-storage capacity, kinetic performance, apparent thermodynamic behavior, and preliminary cycling reversibility under the investigated conditions.

Magnesium metal and its hydride have the characteristics of high hydrogen storage capacity, which is suitable for storing hydrogen energy. In this paper, VS 2 /NC catalyst supported on nanosheet carbon was synthesized by hydrothermal method with organic matter as raw material, then the MgH 2 + x wt.% VS 2 /NC ( x = 0, 3, 6, 9) composites were prepared by ball milling with MgH 2 . The phase characterization of the composite material showed that the VS 2 and MgH 2 phases in the composite material remain stable during ball milling and subsequently, the hydrogen absorption/desorption cycle. There were V 4+ and V 2+ ions (an atomic ratio of 3.77:1) in the catalyst. At 593 K, the capacities of the composites were 5.71, 6.11, 5.62, and 5.33 wt.% H 2 , respectively. The time to reach the maximum hydrogen desorption capacity of 95% was 190, 30, 20, and 23 min, respectively. The dehydrogenation activation energy of the material with x = 6 is reduced by nearly 50 kJ/mol H 2 . The initial dehydrogenation temperature of the material decreases to 323 K. Because of the valence state transition between V ions, the band gap of the composite material is narrowed, which significantly improves the hydrogen absorption and desorption reaction kinetics.

Solid-state hydrogen storage via MgH 2 offers high volumetric density, safety, and energy efficiency but is hampered by high H 2 desorption temperatures and sluggish kinetics. Although nanostructured catalysts enhance performance, their complex synthesis and instability limit viability. We present a one-step strategy that leverages metal acetylacetonates (M(acac) n ) to address these challenges. Combined V(acac) 3 with MgH 2 enables the in situ formation of a highly dispersed V-O-Mg interfacial layer, markedly enhancing H 2 sorption kinetics, achieving an onset dehydrogenation temperature of 170 °C, low temperature H 2 desorption (5.3 wt% at 184 °C) and absorption (4.3 wt% at 24 °C), and excellent cycling stability (95.6 % retention after 100 cycles). Kinetic analysis reveals that dehydrogenation initiates via two-dimensional nucleation-growth and transitions to a temperature-dependent mechanism at high conversion (α > 0.3). Density functional theory indicates that V-induced surface reconstruction and charge redistribution lower the H 2 desorption barrier. Additionally, Zr(acac)₄ and TiO(acac)₂ show similar performance improvements, suggesting a promising pathway for optimizing MgH 2 using metal acetylacetonate-based catalysts.

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) is one of the promising solid-state hydrogen storage materials because of its high capacity, abundant resource and excellent reversibility. However, the high dehydrogenation temperatures and sluggish kinetics restrict its practical application. It was found that doping catalysts could significantly improve the hydrogen storage properties of MgH 2 . The solid solution Ce 0.8 Mn 0.1 Zr 0.1 O 2 (denoted as CeMnZr) with abundant oxygen vacancy was synthesized and its catalytic influence on the hydrogen sorption properties of MgH 2 have been investigated. CeMnZr modified MgH 2 composite showed a reduced initial decomposition temperature, almost 62 K lower than the pristine MgH 2 . At 473 K, MgH 2 -CeMnZr composite had an absorption capacity of 4.08 wt% hydrogen within 3,500 s, which was about twice better than the pure MgH 2 at same condition. MgH 2 -CeMnZr sample could desorb 2.56 wt% of H 2 within 3,500 s at 573 K compared to low desorption rate and 0.85 wt% H 2 by as-milled MgH 2 . The activation energy (Ea) for CeMnZr codoped MgH 2 sample is about 50kJ·mol −1 lower than the milled MgH 2 . Based on the characteration analysis, the in-situ generated MgO and CeH 2.51 species as well as abundant oxygen vacancy is believed to play synergistic catalytic effects in enhancing the hydrogen storage properties of MgH 2 .

Nano-confinement (NC) of Mg/MgH2 in suitable host materials is a promising strategy for simultaneously tuning the thermodynamics and kinetics of Mg-based hydride materials. In the present study, the fabrication of multifunctional host materials for NC of MgH2 was firstly attempted with the aim of improving the hydrogen sorption properties of MgH2. The NC of MgH2 in the mesoporous structure of a Ni-based metal–organic-framework (denoted as MgH2@Ni-MOF) was successfully conducted via a combination of solvothermal method and wet impregnation method followed by hydrogenation at relatively lower temperatures. Structural inspections through X-ray diffraction and high resolution transmission electron microscopy demonstrate the in situ formation of Mg2NiH4 around the MgH2 nanocrystals (∼3 nm), due to the reaction between Ni ions from the Ni-MOF and Mg ions from the dibutyl-magnesium (MgBu2) precursor in a hydrogen atmosphere. Hydrogen sorption tests reveal that the thermodynamics (−65.7 ± 2.1 and 69.7 ± 2.7 kJ mol−1 H2 for ab-/desorption, respectively) and kinetics (41.5 ± 3.7 and 144.7 ± 7.8 kJ mol−1 H2 for ab-/desorption, respectively) of Mg/MgH2 in the MgH2@Ni-MOF composite have been significantly improved. Meanwhile, the Ni-MOF scaffold acts as an “aggregation blocker” to impede the growth and agglomeration of Mg/MgH2 nanocrystals during hydriding/dehydriding cycles, leading to outstanding hydrogen cycling stability. The improvement in thermodynamics and kinetics of MgH2@Ni-MOF has been attributed to the synergistic “nanosize effect” of nanoconfined Mg/MgH2 and catalytic effects from in situ formed Mg2Ni/Mg2NiH4.

Introduction of reactive additives into MgH 2 is a promising strategy for improving the hydrogen storage performances, but the inevitable formation of inert by-products degrades the effective capacity. In this work, a dual-functional additive, amorphous VB 2 nanoparticles , is introduced into MgH 2 by ball milling , which significantly lowers the working temperatures by over 120 °C without a huge capacity loss. VB 2 reacts with MgH 2 to in-situ form V and MgB 2 during ball milling and dehydrogenation , in which V remains unchanged during cycling and MgB 2 is hydrogen-storage-active that can absorb hydrogen. In addition, V acts as an active catalyst, which provides nucleation sites and decreases the apparent activation energy . Therefore, both the products from this VB 2 additive can make contributions to the hydrogen storage performances, showing a dual-functional effect.

Magnesium hydride is considered to be one of the most desirable hydrogen storage materials due to its high weight capacity (7.6 wt% H2) and low price. However, its relatively high operating temperatures and slow dynamics have always hampered its commercial applications. In this paper, nano-nickel particle coated nitrogen-doped carbon spheres (Ni@NCS) were synthesized by a chemical reduction method and then introduced into Mg to form an MgH2–Ni@NCS composite via hydriding combustion and subsequent high-energy ball milling processes. The results showed that the MgH2–Ni@NCS composite possessed high hydrogen storage capacity and fast absorbing/desorbing kinetics, absorbing 5.7 wt% H2 and desorbing 4.3 wt% H2 within 8 min at 623 K. Moreover, the capacity shows negligible degradation after 10 cycles, indicating that the MgH2–Ni@NCS composite has good cycling stability. Even at relatively low temperature (373 K), the MgH2–Ni@NCS composite still absorbed 4.2 wt% H2 within 60 min compared to 0.9 wt% H2 for milled MgH2. The improvement in hydrogen storage properties is ascribed to the in situ formed Mg2NiH4 induced dehydrogenation of MgH2 and effective prevention of the agglomeration of magnesium during the hydriding/dehydriding reaction by the carbon material.
