In the study, CuS/Fe 2 O 3 /Mn 2 O 3 magnetic nanocomposite was successfully synthesized and the properties were investigated via a series of characterization. Subsequently, the magnetic nanocomposite was applied to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation. The results showed that the CuS/Fe 2 O 3 /Mn 2 O 3 magnetic nanocomposite possessed higher catalytic performance for ciprofloxacin degradation than bare CuS and Fe 2 O 3 /Mn 2 O 3 composite. The degradation process of CIP was suitable for the pseudo-first-order kinetic model and the highest rate was reached 0.10083 min −1 . And under the optimized conditions (catalyst = 0.6 g·L −1 , PMS = 0.6 g·L −1 , pH = 5.84, C 0 = 0.2 g·L −1 and t = 120 min), the efficiency of 88% and 48.6% were corresponding to degradation and mineralization of ciprofloxacin, respectively. In addition, the key factors of degradation process such as catalyst dosage, PMS concentration, initial pH value and common anions were investigated. And the results indicated that the degradation efficiency of ciprofloxacin was reduced, which affected by the common anions in order of Cl − > SO 4 2− > NO 3 − > HCO 3 − > Humic acid. Besides, several intermediates of ciprofloxacin were detected and the plausible degradation pathways were proposed. In addition, the underlying reaction mechanism was proposed. Meanwhile, the results of free radical quenching experiment and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra indicated that both OH and SO 4 − radicals were existed in the reaction system and the OH radicals had a conquer role in the degradation progress. Moreover, the stability and reusability of CuS/Fe 2 O 3 /Mn 2 O 3 magnetic nanocomposite were evaluated, which the degradation efficiency still reached 72% after five times used. Ultimately, the as-constructed CuS/Fe 2 O 3 /Mn 2 O 3 magnetic nanocomposite might be a candidate to the removal of refractory pollutants in environmental remediation.

The treatment of semi-coking wastewater generated during the semicoke production process has long been a bottleneck restricting the development of the coal chemical industry. The Fenton reaction is recognized as one of the most effective strategies for addressing water pollution; however, the susceptibility to mineralization and poor reusability of highly active catalysts has limited their practical application. Herein, a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) doped with oleic acid modified Mn 2 O 3 @Mn 5 O 8 (Mn 2 O 3 @Mn 5 O 8 -OA) composite fiber membrane was prepared via melt-blown spinning and blending using a melt-blown pilot setup. This composite was employed to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of semi-coking wastewater, achieving a maximum chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency of 72.4%. Material characterization confirmed successful catalyst immobilization and enhanced surface properties. Theoretical calculations provided molecular-level insights into the adsorption behavior of phenol and its degradation intermediates. The TPU-based membrane significantly improved catalyst stability and reusability while maintaining high catalytic activity, offering an effective strategy for advanced oxidation processes in complex wastewater treatment.

Unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine (UDMH) is difficult to efficiently degrade and mineralize using traditional wastewater treatment processes, leading to the accumulation of toxic nitrogenous intermediates. In this study, a microwave-assisted catalytic degradation system based on manganese oxides was developed for effective UDMH treatment. Experiments were integrated with DFT calculations to systematically compare the structure–activity relationships of MnO2 and Mn2O3. DFT calculations show that the metallic character of Mn2O3 affords high electron mobility that favors rapid reduction of intermediates, whereas semiconducting MnO2 exhibits superior overall catalytic performance; the latter's lower oxygen-vacancy formation energy (2.10 eV vs. 2.41 eV) markedly decreases the barrier for the *OH → *O → *OOH sequence, intensifying oxidative pathways. DFT results, corroborated by XPS and XRD analyses, reveal that both oxides generate ˙OH via dynamic Mn4+/Mn3+/Mn2+ redox cycling and surface hydroxyl enrichment. However, MnO2, exhibiting higher surface ˙OH density and lower UDMH adsorption energy, leverages microwave-induced hot spots to sustain ˙OH production, achieving >90% COD removal. Mn2O3 suffers from structural deactivation that constrains long-term stability. The microwave-enhanced mechanism of Mn-based catalysis was elucidated by the three-scale analysis—electronic structure, surface adsorption and catalytic reaction. This study provides a theoretical basis for the design of manganese-based catalysts and supports their applications in the microwave-assisted treatment of nitrogen-containing wastewater.

Chemical looping methane oxidative coupling is a promising method to directly convert methane to C 2 products but is limited by the trade-off between CH 4 conversion and C 2 selectivity. Here, we develop a series of TiO 2 doped Na 2 WO 4 /Mn 2 O 3 /SiO 2 for chemical looping methane oxidative coupling and investigate the underline mechanism for the enhanced performance. The results show that 5 wt% TiO 2 doped Na 2 WO 4 /Mn 2 O 3 /SiO 2 exhibited 31.2% CH 4 conversion, which is 1.68 times as large as that of Na 2 WO 4 /Mn 2 O 3 /SiO 2 , without significantly decreasing C 2 selectivity (~70.3%). Pulse experiments show that TiO 2 improves the bulk oxygen diffusion, providing more surface oxygen to convert methane, thus leading to enhanced CH 4 conversion. O 1 s spectra manifests that the active oxygen content on the surface was not significantly increased by TiO 2 dopant , thus TiO 2 dopant has little effect on C 2 selectivity. Therefore, 5 wt% TiO 2 doped Na 2 WO 4 /Mn 2 O 3 /SiO 2 shows high chemical looping methane oxidative coupling performance. The explored mechanism in this work can be extended to design more oxygen carriers to enhance the chemical looping reactions.

The surface acidity and electron transfer performance of manganese oxide catalysts significantly affected its performance of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. In this work, Mn 2 O 3 catalyst was prepared by the precipitation method. The C-hybridization Mn 2 O 3 (Mn 2 O 3 -D) catalyst prepared with disodium oxalate as a precipitant had more Mn 3+ and Lewis acid sites on the surface, promoting the binding of PMS on the catalyst surface, which exhibited the best performance in inducing PMS activation to degrade bisphenol A (BPA). Quenching experiments and in situ electron spin resonance (ESR) results indicated that radicals and singlet oxygen were not the main reactive oxygen species (ROSs) in the advanced oxidation process. The chemical probe experiment of phenylmethylsulfone (PMSO) showed that the ≡ Mn-OOSO 3 - metastable intermediate formed by the binding of PMS with Mn sites on the catalyst surface was important active species for contaminants degradation. Contaminants combined with intermediates on the catalyst surface to form the electron transfer channels, which were directly degraded through oxygen-atom-transfer pathway and single-electron-transfer pathway. And the hybridization of C promoted the electron transfer during this process. This work further elucidated the reaction mechanism of PMS activation by manganese oxides, and proposed new ideas for the design of MnO x catalysts for efficient activation of PMS.

Exploiting high-quality cathode materials and optimizing their electrochemical performance for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) is of prominent significance for the advancement of charge storage devices. Herein, a novel zeolitic imidazolate framework assisted synthesis method has been proposed for the first time to prepare C and N co-doped Mn 2 O 3 /Co 3 O 4 cathode (C/N-Mn 2 O 3 /Co 3 O 4 ) with unique hollow hexahedron structure. Theoretical, simulative, and experimental results all reveal that primarily benefiting from synergistic effects, the drawbacks of low structural stability and electrical conductivity for Mn 2 O 3 , and the shortcomings of inferior electrochemical activity and cycling stability for amorphous Co x O y (A-Co x O y ), could be effectively compensated. In addition, the unique hollow hexahedron structure could provide abundant active sites and electron transfer paths, which is conducive to the enhancement of electrochemical activity and kinetics. The zinc battery utilizing C/N-Mn 2 O 3 /Co 3 O 4 as cathode exhibits a high specific capacity of 355.9 mAh·g −1 at 0.1 A·g −1 , which is much higher than that of A-Co x O y . After dozens of cycling at different current densities, the specific capacity could be retained, indicating superior rate performance. Moreover, the specific capacity presents no decrease during initial 600 repeated charge/discharge cycles, suggesting admirable cycling stability. Additionally, the electrochemical kinetics and energy density of the AZIBs are also distinctly improved.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are considered highly promising next-generation energy storage technologies due to their intrinsic safety, low cost, and high theoretical capacity. Among the potential cathode materials for AZIBs, manganese oxide stands out because of its high theoretical specific capacity, diverse crystal structures, and abundant crustal availability. However, drawbacks of manganese oxide including irreversible phase transitions, low ionic conductivity, and unavoidable Mn 3+ dissolution often result in low capacity and poor cycling stability. Herein, a novel dual-phase material, Mn 2 O 3 /(Co,Mn)(Co,Mn) 2 O 4 (MO/CMO), featuring a meso porous structure and stable phase interface, was facilely synthesized via one-step thermal decomposition of Co 2+ -doped MnCO 3 precursors. The meso pores provide additional active sites, facilitating faster reaction kinetics, while the phase interface effectively suppresses spontaneous Mn 3+ dissolution, resulting in excellent cycling stability. Specifically, the MO/CMO-10 cathode in aqueous electrolyte cell exhibits a high initial specific capacity of 253 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 , and enhanced cycling stability of 98 mAh g −1 after 2200 cycles at 1.0 A g −1 and an ultra-long cycle life of 63 mAh g −1 over 6800 cycles at 2.0 A g −1 . When assembled in flexible quasi-solid-state ZIBs, the cell maintains a high specific capacity of up to 124 mAh g −1 after 980 cycles at 1.0 A g −1 . Remarkably, the pouch cell sustains stable output even under harsh conditions, indicating promising potential for wearable applications.

Solid-state lithium metal batteries (LMBs) receive increasing attentions worldwide due to their safety and high energy density . Herein, the practical application of conversion reaction-type transition metal oxides (TMOs, Fe 2 O 3 , Mn 2 O 3 or CuO) as Li-free cathodes for solid-state LMBs is demonstrated for the first time, employing poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), lithium garnet Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 or Li 1.5 Al 0.5 Ge 1.5 (PO 3 ) 4 solid-state electrolytes (SSEs). The cathodes embody good interfacial compatibility with the SSEs, ensuring the excellent electrochemical performance of the TMOs/SSEs/Li solid-state cells. The as-prepared Fe 2 O 3 /PEO/Li cell measured at 60 °C delivers a high discharge capacity of 990 mAh g −1 at 10 mA g −1 , which is comparable to the Fe 2 O 3 liquid cell. When cycling at 200 mA g −1 , a stable capacity of 733 mAh g −1 is achieved at the 1,100 th cycle for the Fe 2 O 3 /PEO/Li cell, while the Fe 2 O 3 liquid cell only sustains 860 cycles until failure. In order to further demonstrate the application feasibility, stable cycling of the Fe 2 O 3 /PEO/Li cells with high mass loading of 2.83 mg cm −2 and thus high areal capacity of 1.67 mAh cm −2 or with limited Li usage (150% in excess) is preliminarily achieved. In addition, the Fe 2 O 3 /PEO/Li pouch cells are assembled, which exhibit satisfied electrochemical performance. Moreover, poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF)-based solid polymer electrolye is employed to make the Fe 2 O 3 solid-state cell work at 30 °C successfully. These results convince the great promise of TMOs in future high-energy-density solid-state LMBs.
