Study on the design of biphasic TiO2/Ag3PO4 nanofiber semiconductor photocatalysts and its photocatalytic performance for RHB and MO

Ding Huihui,Shi Huimin,Wang Tao,Zhang Hengyang,Li Shuang,Zhang Xinshui

In the photocatalytic process, mixed-phase TiO 2 tends to have more carrier transport channels compared with single-phase TiO 2 , which can further accelerate the separation of photogenerated carriers. In this study, biphasic TiO 2 nanofibers containing both rutile and anatase phases were synthesized by electrostatic spinning technique. Subsequently, a variety of biphasic TiO 2 /Ag 3 PO 4 nanofiber photocatalytic materials with different ratios were prepared by combining the in situ growth process. The test results confirm that not only heterojunctions are formed between the components of the composites, but also the optical properties are improved. When the content of Ag 3 PO 4 was 25 wt%, the composite showed excellent photocatalytic activity for both rhodamine B (RHB) and methyl orange (MO). In addition, the main active substances and stability of the composite were investigated by doing active agent capture experiments and stability tests, and a reasonable photocatalytic mechanism was proposed on the basis of the relevant test results.

Peptide-Modified Mo Polyoxometalate Nanoparticles Suppress Zn2+-Induced Aβ Aggregation

Yanan Liu,Jing Sun,Youcong Gong,Hui Zhou,Xu Chen,Xufeng Zhu,Yingyu Zhao,Yayu Wen,Xiuying Qin,Jie Liu

Graphical Peptide@POMs nanoparticles with Aβ-targeting peptides are used for Alzheimer's disease treatment in mice. First, synthetic peptide-modified Mo-POM nanoparticles are synthesized. Then, the assembled Peptide@POMs nanoparticles can effectively inhibit Zn 2+ -induced Aβ40 aggregation, penetrate the blood-brain barrier, and bind to Aβ. In addition, Peptide@POMs nanoparticles protect neurons from Aβ40-mediated neurotoxicity. The abnormal metabolism of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptide, as one of the main components of senile plaques, plays a vital role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Our previous work showed that polyoxometalates (POMs) that inhibited the formation of Aβ aggregates were promising for AD therapy. Here, peptide-modified Mo polyoxometalate (Mo-POMs) nanoparticles were synthesized by the self-assembly of Aβ target peptide and Mo-POMs based on our previous work. Importantly, after modifying with the Aβ target peptide, the Mo polyoxometalate (Mo-POMs) nanoparticles exhibited enhanced blood-brain barrier (BBB) penetration and high binding affinity with Aβ species. The interactions between the Peptide@Mo-POMs nanoparticle and Aβ in the presence of Zn 2+ were comprehensively studied using physicochemical methods (spectroscopy, ThT fluorescence, turbidity tests). Peptide@Mo-POMs could suppress Aβ aggregation, disaggregate Aβ fibrils, and suppress Zn 2+ -induced Aβ aggregation. In addition, in vitro cell experiments revealed that Peptide@Mo-POMs could target and be well absorbed by PC12 cells, leading to the inhibition of intracellular Aβ aggregation and reduced Aβ aggregates-induced cytotoxicity. The blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability of Peptide@Mo-POMs was also revealed by the Transwell experiment. This study gives a mechanistic understanding into how Peptide@Mo-POMs can work through a synergistic interaction with metal ions and Aβ, and provides new insights into the design and synthesis of POMs as Aβ inhibitors in the treatment of AD.

Effect of Pore Structure on the Performance of Mo-Ni Catalysts for Petroleum Resin Hydrogenation

Niu Tong,Shi Zhengyang,Sun Jinchang,Zhang Qianwen

The modification of petroleum resin (PR) by catalytic hydrogenation is an upgrading technology for producing high-value-added hydrogenated petroleum resin (HPR) from of pyrolysis petroleum by-product. This research employed alumina supports with different pore size distributions to prepare supported Mo-Ni type catalysts and investigated their catalytic hydrogenation performance on C 9 petroleum resin. Catalysts prepared with bimodal pore alumina (BPA) supports effectively overcome the limitations of internal diffusion and increase the quantity of active sites, thus increasing the catalytic activity for hydrogenation. The experimental results demonstrated that MoNi/BPA achieved a hydrogenation degree of 99.94% for HC 9 PR, with the hydrogenated product having a Pt–Co colour of 2.37 Hazen. After 140 h of reaction, the hydrogenation degree of HC 9 PR remained at 96.51%, and the Pt–Co colour value was lower than 40 Hazen. This investigation confirms that solving the mass transfer issues of petroleum resin molecules in the pores of supported catalysts is key to designing efficient hydrogenation catalysts for petroleum resin. Addition of h-BN for enhanced machinability and high mechanical strength of AlN/Mo composites

Yunzi Li,Fei Chen,Xiaoyu Li,Qiang Shen,Lianmeng Zhang

Ceramic/metal composites, as high-temperature structural materials, have limited applications because of their poor machinability . AlN/Mo/Mo 2 B machinable composites were fabricated by adding h-BN to AlN/Mo composites by plasma-activated sintering at various temperatures and at an axial pressure of 30 MPa under argon atmosphere. The sample sintered at 1500 °C exhibited excellent machinability for cemented carbide tools, with a bending strength of approximately 500 MPa and a Vickers hardness value of 9.34 GPa. The effects of sintering temperature on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and machinability were investigated, and the reactions introduced by adding h-BN were studied. These reactions reinforced the composite and newly introduced a Mo 2 B phase, which showed better ability to deflect cracks and prevent them from moving deep inside the composite, thus improving its machinability. This research provides a possible solution for improving the machinability of ceramic/metal composites without sacrificing the strength .

Simultaneously Enhanced Charge Separation and Transfer in Cocatalyst-Free Hematite Photoanode by Mo/Sn Codoping

Jingran Xiao,Borui Du,SiYuan Hu,Jun Zhong,Xingyu Chen,Yanghong Zhang,Dongren Cai,Shu-Feng Zhou,Guowu Zhan

It is well-known that sluggish surface charge transfer on a cocatalyst-free hematite photoanode limits its solar conversion efficiency in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Here, Mo is used as a codopant synergistically with Sn in α-Fe2O3 to solve this problem. Besides causing a slight narrowing of bandgap, morphological change, and even sublimation loss of α-Fe2O3, Mo doping also imports low-valent Fe due to charge compensation with MoV/VI as indicated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Bader charge computation, which increases the densities of donor and surfaces states. Although rate law analysis demonstrates slight retardation of surface reaction kinetics, strongly inhibited charge recombination in surface states by Mo doping still contributes to improving the photocurrent density and reducing the onset potential of α-Fe2O3 and Sn–Fe2O3 photoanodes. An optimized Mo/Sn–Fe2O3 photoanode can realize a low onset potential of 0.68 V vs a reversible hydrogen electrode (VRHE) and a photocurrent density of 1.97 mA cm–2 at 1.23 VRHE, enhanced by 58% and 20 times compared to Sn–Fe2O3 and α-Fe2O3, respectively. It is demonstrated that Mo doping promotes charge transfer which differs from most traditional n-type dopants that facilitate charge separation but inhibit charge transfer. This report expands the n-type dopant family of α-Fe2O3 for efficient PEC water splitting.

Dual-Metal MOFs with High Proportion of Mo-Coordinated Zr–O Clusters for Promoting N2 Fixation

Xinyu Mao,Yu Chen,Shihao Li,Yang Yang,Chen Tao,Jiafu Shi,Zhongyi Jiang

Activation of the N≡N bond is of importance in photocatalytic nitrogen (N2) fixation, which strongly relies on the precise construction of catalytic active sites. Herein, we reported a dual-metal photocatalyst of Mo/UN(Zr) with a high proportion of Mo-coordinated Zr–O clusters (Zr–O–Mo dual-metal active sites) for photocatalytic N2 fixation, which was synthesized though post-modification to the defects of UN(Zr) by Mo. By contrast with the dual-metal photocatalyst of UN(Zr–Mo) synthesized via the co-mixing method, Mo/UN(Zr) possesses a higher proportion of Zr–O–Mo dual-metal active sites that is crucial for activating and polarizing N≡N bond as evidenced by in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The synergistic effect of Zr–O–Mo dual-metal active sites resulted in a lower potential activation energy barrier for N2 activation which promoted the photocatalytic N2 fixation efficiency. The optimum photocatalytic N2 fixation rate of Mo/UN(Zr) was 255.7 μmol g–1 h–1 by adjusting the loading amount of Mo, which was enhanced about 2.5 times and 1.6 times compared with UN(Zr) and UN(Zr–Mo) photocatalyst, respectively. Our study will afford valuable guidance for designing efficient photocatalysts for photocatalytic N2 fixation.

Catalytic depolymerization of the dealkaline lignin over Co–Mo–S catalysts in supercritical ethanol

Guojun Hao,Hongying Liu,Zhibing Chang,Kechen Song,Xin Yang,Han Ma,Wenjing Wang

In this work, lignin depolymerization was examined over CoMo sulfide catalysts supported on different carriers in supercritical ethanol system. The temperature, time, MoS 2 and carrier effects on the lignin depolymerization were investigated. 95.76% liquefaction yield with negligible char was achieved over Co–Mo–S/ZrO 2 at 340 °C for 150 min. The liquid product was mainly composed of C 4 –C 8 alcohols, C 4 –C 10 esters and C 7 –C 10 aromatic compounds . The synergistic effect of active sites and acid-base sites on support played an important role in lignin depolymerization. Furthermore, the Co–Mo–S/ZrO 2 catalyst is reusable with 8% loss in liquefaction yield after 5 cyclic runs. We believe that acid/base carriers or additives that can promote the medium to generate abundant free radicals or ions to replace external hydrogen pressure are one of the prospects for the design of depolymerization lignin catalysts.

Precious-Metal-Free Mo-MXene Catalyst Enabling Facile Ammonia Synthesis Via Dual Sites Bridged by H-Spillover

Yanliang Zhou,Lili Liang,Congying Wang,Fuxiang Sun,Lirong Zheng,Haifeng Qi,Bin Wang,Xiuyun Wang,Chak-tong Au,Junjie Wang,Lilong Jiang,Hideo Hosono

To date, NH3 synthesis under mild conditions is largely confined to precious Ru catalysts, while nonprecious metal (NPM) catalysts are confronted with the challenge of low catalytic activity due to the inverse relationship between the N2 dissociation barrier and NHx (x = 1–3) desorption energy. Herein, we demonstrate NPM (Co, Ni, and Re)-mediated Mo2CTx MXene (where Tx denotes the OH group) to achieve efficient NH3 synthesis under mild conditions. In particular, the NH3 synthesis rate over Re/Mo2CTx and Ni/Mo2CTx can reach 22.4 and 21.5 mmol g–1 h–1 at 400 °C and 1 MPa, respectively, higher than that of NPM-based catalysts and Cs–Ru/MgO ever reported. Experimental and theoretical studies reveal that Mo4+ over Mo2CTx has a strong ability for N2 activation; thus, the rate-determining step is shifted from conventional N2 dissociation to NH2* formation. NPM is mainly responsible for H2 activation, and the high reactivity of spillover hydrogen and electron transfer from NPM to the N-rich Mo2CTx surface can efficiently facilitate nitrogen hydrogenation and the subsequent desorption of NH3. With the synergistic effect of the dual active sites bridged by H-spillover, the NPM-mediated Mo2CTx catalysts circumvent the major obstacle, making NH3 synthesis under mild conditions efficient.

Unraveling the role of CH3S* intermediates for efficient methane and hydrogen sulfide reforming over Mo/Al2O3 catalysts

Jundao Wu,Zeai Huang,Zhen He,Rustem Zairov,Xiaoting He,Yue Huang,Mengyao Fu,Chengdong Yuan,Oleg G. Sinyashin,Ying Zhou

The catalytic methane(CH 4 ) and hydrogen sulfide(H 2 S) reforming (H 2 SMR) represents a promising approach for producing high-value sulfur-carbon compounds and hydrogen without generating the greenhouse gas of CO 2 . Despite its significant potential, the mechanistic understanding of interactions between CH 4 and H 2 S remains contentious, posing substantial challenges for catalyst development. In this study, we employed a Mo/Al 2 O 3 catalyst to elucidate synergistic conversion pathways between CH 4 and H 2 S during H 2 SMR. At 1173 K with a reaction duration of 0.5 h, conversion rates of CH 4 and H 2 S reached 63.7 % and 59.2 %, respectively, accompanied by H 2 and CS 2 production rates of 688.8 μmol g −1  min −1 and 444.3 μmol g −1  min −1 , respectively. Notably, the catalyst exhibited stable performance over 5 h without significant deactivation, in contrast to pure methane cracking reactions where CH 4 conversion rapidly declined from 43.6 % to 14.3 %. Through in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) combined with alternating CH 4 /H 2 S exposure experiments, we successfully tracked the synergistic conversion pathway on the Mo/Al 2 O 3 catalyst. These investigations revealed that the formation of CH 3 S intermediates serves as a critical step facilitating CS 2 generation. This mechanistic insight not only advances fundamental understanding of H 2 SMR reaction pathways but also provides a rational foundation for designing optimized catalysts with enhanced stability and extended operational lifetimes. The identification of this intermediate-driven mechanism addresses previous controversies regarding CH 4 -H 2 S interactions and offers strategic guidance for developing efficient sulfur-resistant catalytic systems.

Promoting photocatalytic hydrogen production by a core–shell CdS@MoOx photocatalyst connected by an S–Mo “bridge”

Cankun Jiang,Lulu Zhang,Fan Gao,Xueyan Huang,Rui Lei,Yun Ye,Jie Yuan,Ping Liu

A CdS@MoOx core–shell nanorod photocatalyst has been constructed by a one-step in situ photodeposition method, which effectively utilizes the photoproduced-hole-induced dehydration and condensation of Mo–O–H derived from the hydrolyzed product of MoCl5, to successfully deposit a layer of MoOx on the surface of CdS NRs. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy further confirmed that S–Mo bonds serve as bridges for carrier transport between the core and the shell, significantly reducing the interface impedance and improving the carrier transmission efficiency. Due to the superior interfacial carrier separation as well as the enhanced light absorption, the optimal CdS@MoOx-0.9 nanocomposite exhibits a high hydrogen production performance (5.42 mmol g−1 h−1) under visible light irradiation (λ > 400 nm). We have experimentally shed light on the mechanism of this excellent enhancement performance in detail. Moreover, our work can broaden the range of construction and application of developing other photocatalytic materials containing transition metal oxides.

Mo-based catalysts for CH4/H2S reforming to hydrogen production: effect of hydroxyl concentration of the support

Li Ke,Zhu Yuqiu,Wang Zixuan,Chen Dingkai,Wu Wenwei,Luo Yongming,He Dedong

High concentration of H 2 S in acidic natural gas will lead to poisoning of catalysts for hydrogen production by methane steam reforming, thus limiting the further use of natural gas. Reforming CH 4 by H 2 S can be considered as an alternative route to hydrogen production from methane. This process not only achieves the removal of H 2 S but also obtains chemical raw material CS 2 and clean energy H 2 . By impregnating the Mo source on SiO 2 treated with hydrogen peroxide and then using the catalyst in the CH 4 /H 2 S reforming reaction, we surprisingly found that the conversion rate of CH 4 and H 2 S increased from 28 and 32% to 34% and 43%, respectively, after hydrogen peroxide treatment. The H 2 production rate and the yield of CS 2 increased from 20 mmolH 2 /(g Mo *min) and 52% to 30 mmolH 2 /(g Mo *min) and 65%, respectively. Combining with characterization methods such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), hydrogen temperature programmed reduction (H 2 -TPR), 1 H-based solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H MAS NMR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectra (RS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we found that the hydroxyl concentration of the support increased after hydrogen peroxide treatment, which led to the strengthening of the force between the metal and the support, which was easy to form low-level and small-size MoS 2 , exposing more active sites, and further improving the catalytic activity. This method provides a new idea for hydrogen production by CH 4 /H 2 S reforming and the development of high-performance MoS 2 -based catalysts.

Synthesis of high-performance Mo–La2O3 powder by hydrogen reduction of MoO2 originated from a self-reduction strategy

Zhuangzhi Wu,Xin Liu,Dezhi Wang

A traditional preparation process of Mo powder is generally time-consuming and leads to coarse particles. In this work, we propose a short-flow strategy, in which the intermediate product of MoO2 is prepared by a one-step self-reduction method in air instead of a mixture of decomposition and hydrogen reduction processes. And the reaction mechanism of self-reduction is investigated and the consequent sintering performance of Mo powder is also compared with the traditional one. The obtained results demonstrate that the finally synthesized Mo–La2O3 powder prepared by the self-reduction strategy are spherical with an average particle size of 2.03 μm, exhibiting an excellent sintering performance with a relative density of 95.3% and a hardness of 260.6 (HV), better than those by a traditional one (93.4% and 232.4 (HV)), which can be attributed to smaller particle size and better shapes. This work provides a new route for the synthesis of Mo–La2O3 powder, indicating a possible industrial application.
