N-induced compressive strain in Ni-MoO2 heterostructure with micro-nano array for improving high-current-output urea-assisted water electrolysis performance

Guangfu Qian,Tian Lu,Yunpeng Wang,Haotian Xu,Xinyu Cao,Zehan Xie,Changzhou Chen,Douyong Min

Developing high-performance catalysts is significant for hydrogen production from urea electrolysis, but is still an enormous challenge. Herein, we construct an N-induced compressive strain of Ni-MoO 2 heterostructure with a micro-nano array structure supported on nickel foam (N-Ni-MoO 2 /NF) to dramatically boost the urea electrolysis performance. In 1.0 M KOH + 0.5 M urea condition, N-Ni-MoO 2 /NF shows low potentials for urea oxidation and hydrogen evolution reaction (UOR: E 10/500/1000  = 1.351/1.415/1.439 V; HER: E − 10/ − 500/ − 1000  =  − 49/−242/−284 mV). Furthermore, it can obtain 1.753 V at the high-current-output of 500 mA cm −2 for urea electrolysis and stably operate for 100 h. The good UOR/HER activity and stability of N-Ni-MoO 2 /NF are owing to the triaxial compressive strain of Ni and MoO 2 , and the heterostructure between Ni and MoO 2 , which tune the electronic structure of N-Ni-MoO 2 /NF and optimize the adsorption/desorption energy of hydrogen/urea species. Besides, the micro-nano array structure accelerates the diffusion of gas/liquid and affords more active sites to improve UOR/HER performance. Therefore, this work not only fabricates a good catalyst for urea electrolysis but also provides a promising avenue for designing high-performance non-precious-metal catalytic materials at high-current-output.

A sandwich-type electrochemical immunosensor based on Au@Pd nanodendrite functionalized MoO2 nanosheet for highly sensitive detection of HBsAg

Qingshan Yang,Ping Wang,Enhui Ma,Haoxuan Yu,Kaiwei Zhou,Chunyuan Tang,Jie Ren,Yueyun Li,Qing Liu,Yunhui Dong

In this work, a sandwich-type electrochemical immunosensor was fabricated to the effective detection of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). The designed electrochemical immunosensor was based on Au core and Pd shell nanodendrites loaded on amino functionalized molybdenum dioxide nanosheets (Au@Pd NDS/NH 2 –MoO 2 NSs) as the secondary antibody (Ab 2 ) label and silver nanoparticles were loaded by electrodeposited (D-Ag NPs) on the surface of electrode as the platform. Because of the synergistic effect and abundant catalytic activity sites provided by surface dendrite structure, Au@Pd NDs were more effective than single gold and palladium nanoparticles in catalytic reduction of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ). MoO 2 had the good catalytic capacity for reduction of H 2 O 2 and favourable electrical conductivity . Hence, the obtained Au@Pd NDS/NH 2 –MoO 2 NSs were more effective than Au@Pd NDs and NH 2 –MoO 2 NSs in catalytic reduction of hydrogen peroxide attribute to a synergistic effect. Also, Ag NPs with admirable electrical conductivity and biocompatibility were used as sensing platforms and primary antibodies (Ab 1 ) carriers, which can accelerate the electron transfer and improve the sensitivity of the immunosensor. Here, the proposed electrochemical immunosensor offered a wide linear interval from 10 fg mL −1 to 100 ng mL −1 and the lower limit of detection of 3.3 fg mL −1 (S/N = 3) for detection of HBsAg under optimal experimental conditions. Furthermore, the accuracy of the actual serum sample analysis was satisfactory, which showed that the electrochemical immunosensor possessed a good application prospect in clinical detection.

Super P and MoO2/MoS2 co-doped gradient nanofiber membrane as multi-functional separator for lithium–sulfur batteries

Liang Xin,Zhao Dong-Qing,Huang Qian-Qian,Liang Sheng,Wang Li-Li,Hu Lei,Liu Ling-Li,Hu Kun-Hong,Deng Chong-Hai,Cheng Sheng,Zhu Er-Tao,Deng Hua-Xia

Lithium–sulfur battery is one of the most promising battery systems for industrialization due to its high theoretical specific capacity and high energy density. Nonetheless, the “shuttle effect” has restrained the advancement of lithium–sulfur batteries. In this work, a gradient-structured nanofiber membrane with pure gelatin on one side and Super P-MoO 2 /MoS 2 -gelatin on the other side was created using a multi-step electrostatic spinning technique, which was applied for multi-functional separator for lithium–sulfur batteries. The pure gelatin layer facing the anode side primarily homogenizes the lithium flux, whereas the Super P-MoO 2 /MoS 2 -gelatin layer facing the cathode side primarily adsorbs polysulfides by physical and chemical adsorption and enhancing polysulfide conversion efficiency. The findings demonstrate that even after 150 cycles at 0.2C, the lithium–sulfur battery can still sustain a discharge-specific capacity of 572.3 mAh·g −1 . When used with Li||Li symmetric batteries, it has a cycle life of more than 1200 h. The commercialization of lithium–sulfur batteries is given a fresh idea by this straightforward preparation technique. Graphical abstract

Interfacial Engineering of a MoO2–CeF3 Heterostructure as a High-Performance Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Catalyst in Both Alkaline and Acidic Solutions

Jian Chen,Xiaopeng Qi,Chao Liu,Jinming Zeng,Tongxiang Liang

Exploring an efficient and pollution-free hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalyst based on the combination of rare-earth metal and nonnoble metal is of significant importance. However, successfully achieving such a goal remains highly challenging. Herein, a nanosheet comprising a MoO2–CeF3 heterojunction (MoO2–CeF3/NF) is successfully prepared via a three-step method. (1) Growth of hexahedral nickel hydroxide [Ni(OH)2] on a 3D nickel foam (NF) as the scaffold. (2) In situ hydrothermal growth of a precursor nanosheet structure on the scaffold. (3) Calcination treatment at 450 °C in the presence of hydrogen. Herein, the electron redistribution at the heterointerface of CeF3 and MoO2 is a contributing factor toward enhanced HER activity. Appropriate introduction of CeF3 can enlarge the size of nanosheets, increase numerous active sites, increase the catalytic durability of the material, and change electron distribution on the MoO2 interface; all of the above improve HER activity. Because of its interfacial nanosheet structure, MoO2–CeF3/NF demonstrates pre-eminent HER capability in both alkaline (1.0 M KOH) and acidic (0.5 M H2SO4) electrolytes, with extremely small overpotentials of 18 and 42 mV at 10 mA cm–2, respectively. This is obviously lower than the overpotential of Pt/C in alkaline media (27 mV), and it is also close to the overpotential of Pt/C in acidic media (41 mV), at the same current density. More importantly, MoO2–CeF3/NF displays a better HER activity than Pt/C at a current density of >112 mA cm–2 in both alkaline and acidic electrolytes. This work offers a novel strategy toward high-performance hydrogen production by designing a transition metal oxide and rare-earth metal heterojunction.

Interlayer-bonded Ni/MoO2 electrocatalyst for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction with stability over 6000 h at 1000 mA cm−2

Dong Anrui,Lin Gaoxin,Li Zhiheng,Wu Wen,Cao Xing,Li Wenlong,Wang Linqin,Zhao Yilong,Chen Dexin,Sun Licheng

The mechanical stability of the catalytic electrodes used for hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) is crucial for their industrial applications in anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEM-WE). This study develops a corrosion strategy to construct a self-supported electrocatalyst (Int-Ni/MoO 2 ) with high mechanical stability by anchoring the Ni/MoO 2 catalytic layer with a dense interlayer of MoO 2 nanoparticles. The Int-Ni/MoO 2 exhibits a strengthened homostructural interface between the interlayer and catalytic layer, preventing the detachment of the catalyst during ultrasonic treatment. The blade-shaped catalytic layer reduces bubble shock and potential fluctuations at high current densities up to −6000 mA cm −2 . As a result, the Int-Ni/MoO 2 electrode exhibits a low overpotential of 73.2 ± 14.2 mV and long-term stability for 6000 h at −1000 mA cm −2 in a 1 M KOH solution. The Int-Ni/MoO 2 assembled AEM-WE device demonstrates long-term stability at 1000 mA cm −2 for 1000 h with a very low degradation rate of 3.96 µV h −1 .

In-Situ Synthesis of Petal-Like MoO2@MoN/NF Heterojunction As Both an Advanced Binder-Free Anode and an Electrocatalyst for Lithium Ion Batteries and Water Splitting

Yan Sun,Yinlong Zhou,Yaping Zhu,Yuhua Shen,Anjian Xie

The design and synthesis of a heterostructure as well as binder-free electrodes or electrocatalysts with a porous nanostructure for enhancing electrochemical performance of lithium ion batteries and water splitting are still significant challenges to scientists. Here, for the first time, an in-situ synthesis of the porous petal-like MoN nanolayer-coated MoO2 heterojunction (MoO2@MoN) on commercial nickel foam (NF) by a localized nitrided transformation method as both a binder-free electrode for LIBs and an electrocatalyst for water splitting was performed. The in-situ formation of the MoN nanolayer could create a MoO2@MoN heterostructure, therefore enhancing the electronic conductivity and the electron/ion transfer. The XRD and XPS measurements confirmed the wonderful reversibility of the MoN layer during lithiation/delithiation cycling, which effectively promoted the long-life cycling performance (1190.1 mA h g–1 after 500 cycles at the current density of 0.5 A g–1). Meanwhile, the MoO2@MoN/NF/LiFePO4 full cell displayed stable capacity after 100 cycles. Moreover, the product also showed the improved electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution and oxygen evolution. The excellent results suggest that our work opens a simple in-situ heterojunction formation pathway for the synthesis of other multifunctional materials applied in energy conversion and storage.

Optimization of Interfacial Electrons and Compressive-Tensile Strains at Lignin-Derived Carbon-Supported Multiphase Ni/Cu/MoO2 Interfaces for Boosting Large Current-Density HER

Xinyu Cao,Liancen Li,Guangfu Qian,Qizhi Xie,Yuxuan Xie,Jiawei Li,Yunpeng Wang,Minsheng Lu,Jinli Chen,Panagiotis Tsiakaras

Developing efficient pH-universal hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts is critically needed yet challenged by pH-dependent. Here, a lignin-derived carbon-supported Ni/Cu/MoO 2 heterostructure (Ni/Cu/MoO 2 @LC) through multiphase interfaces design is engineered, which displays excellent electrochemical activity, featuring low potentials of −14.4/−201.5 (acidic), −44.5/−615.7 (neutral), and −28.2/−242.3 mV (alkaline) at −10/−1000 mA cm −2 . Theoretical and experimental analysis show that the Ni/Cu/MoO 2 @LC multiphase interfaces produce a synergistic coupling of compressive-tensile strains and interfacial electron transfer effect. This synergistic effect triggers electron redistribution, tailors the electronic configuration through d -band center optimization, and balances intermediate adsorption/desorption energetics. Additionally, lignin-derived carbon self-supported micro-nano-array structure enhances gas-liquid transport and corrosion resistance, allowing Ni/Cu/MoO 2 @LC to operate stably for at least 120 h, at −500 mA cm −2 in various pH solutions. Thus, this study provides a new idea for the design of cost-effective pH-universal HER electrocatalysts and a new approach for applying lignin-derived carbon in electrocatalysis.

Hierarchically Structured P-Doped MoS2/MoO2 Ultrathin Nanosheets on N-Doped Carbon Hemispheres for Sensitive Dopamine Detection

Li Xu,Pingyue Hu,Liwen Tan,Junchun Guo,Sheng Li,Xiaoli Xiong

Dopamine (DA) is a key neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, and abnormal concentrations are associated with a variety of diseases. In this study, a novel electrochemical sensor is constructed based on ultrathin P-doped MoS2/MoO2 nanosheets supported on bowl-shaped N-doped carbon hemispheres (N-BCH@P-MoS2/MoO2). The unique hierarchical structure combines the high specific surface area of N-BCH with the enhanced electrocatalytic activity of P-doped MoS2/MoO2, resulting in significant improvements in the performance for DA detection. The electronic structure of the catalyst is further modulated by the codoping of N and P, which increases the electrical conductivity and the number of active centers. The results show that the N-BCH@P-MoS2/MoO2 exhibits excellent sensitivity and selectivity for DA detection, capable of achieving a detection limit as low as 0.12 μM within a broad concentration range (3–100 μM) (S/N = 3). Furthermore, electrocatalysts have been employed in the detection of DA in human serum, indicating significant promise for clinical diagnosis.

Highly uniform nitrogen-doped carbon decorated MoO2 nanopopcorns as anode for high-performance lithium/sodium-ion storage

Peilin Zhang,Shouzhi Guo,Jinzhe Liu,Chencheng Zhou,Shuo Li,Yun Yang,Jing Wu,Di Yu,Luyang Chen

Molybdenum dioxides (MoO 2 ) featuring low cost and high theoretical capacity endow them competitive anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs)/sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, the low electrical conductivity and severe volume expansion occurring during the ion insertion/extraction process hamper their practical application. Herein, a novel dual-annealing design has been developed for the synthesis of highly uniform MoO 2 nanopopcorns decorated with nitrogen-doped carbon shell (MoO 2 /NC). Owing to the unique structural characteristics and vital amorphous NC component, the MoO 2 /NC nanopopcorn hybrid composite exhibits stabilized charge storage capacity of 1073 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles for LIBs, while 301 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles for SIBs at 0.5 A g −1 . Furthermore, when the current density increases to 5 A g −1 , the specific capacity could still maintain 630 mAh g −1 and 174 mAh g −1 for LIBs and SIBs, respectively, which disclose the outstanding rate capability of MoO 2 /NC nanopopcorn anode.

3D multiporous Co,N co-doped MoO2/MoC nanorods hybrids as improved electrode materials for highly sensitive simultaneous determination of acetaminophen and 4-aminophenol

Yuanyuan Dong,Min Zhou,Lei Zhang

3D multiporous Co, N co-doped MoO 2 /MoC (3D Co,N-MoO 2 /MoC) nanorods hybrids were successfully synthesized via carburizing core-shell ZIF-67-cladded MoO 3 nanorods precursor at high temperature. As-fabricated Co,N-MoO 2 /MoC nanorods coated glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) was demonstrated to possess superior electrocatalytic activity for the electro-oxidation of acetaminophen (AC) and 4-aminophenol (4-AP). Such excellent electrochemical performance was largely attributed to the synergistic effect of the unique multiporous structure, the optimal component and abundant active sites of the nanorods. The corresponding electrode reaction mechanisms were studied in detail in this article. Under optimal conditions, the linear detection ranges were 0.05–200.0 μmol/L for AC and 0.05–140.0 μmol/L for 4-AP, respectively, with the low detection limits of 0.013 μmol/L and 0.012 μmol/L. Furthermore, the 3D Co,N-MoO 2 /MoC/GCE revealed excellent sensitivity, good reproducibility, stability and anti-interference ability. The developed electrode was evaluated towards the detecting AC and 4-AP in biological fluids, environment water and pharmaceutical formulations with satisfactory recovery, which had a broad application prospect.

MoO2 Nanoclusters Embedded in Hierarchical Nitrogen Doped Carbon Nanoflower as Electrocatalytic Mediators in Aqueous Zinc–Tellurium Batteries: Enhancing Electrochemical Kinetics of Tellurium Redox Reaction

Honghai Wang,Wenyue Yang,Huiting Xu,Meng Li,Huibin Liu,Siqi Gong,Fan Zhao,Chunli Li,Junjie Qi,Wenchao Peng,Jiapeng Liu

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are considered to be one of the most promising devices for large-scale energy storage systems owing to their high theoretical capacity, environmental friendliness, and safety. However, the ionic intercalation or surface redox mechanisms in conventional cathode materials generally result in unsatisfactory capacities. Conversion-type aqueous zinc–tellurium (Zn–Te) batteries have recently gained widespread attention owing to their high theoretical specific capacities. However, it remains an enormous challenge to improve the slow kinetics of the aqueous Zn–Te batteries. Here, MoO 2 nanoclusters embedded in hierarchical nitrogen-doped carbon nanoflower (MoO 2 /NC) hosts are successfully synthesized and loaded with Te in aqueous Zn–Te batteries. Benefitting from the highly dispersed MoO 2 nanoclusters and hierarchical nanoflower structure with a large specific surface area, the electrochemical kinetics of the Te redox reaction are significantly improved. As a result, the Te-MoO 2 /NC electrode exhibits superior cycling stability and a high specific capacity of 493 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 . Meanwhile, the conversion mechanism is systematically explored using a variety of ex situ characterization methods. Therefore, this study provides a novel approach for enhancing the kinetics of the Te redox reaction in aqueous Zn–Te batteries.

Enhanced electrochemical performance of an electrospun carbon/MoO2 composite nanofiber membrane as self-standing anodes for lithium-ion batteries

Jun Xiang,Zhipeng Wu,Xueke Zhang,Shanshan Yao

A flexible carbon nanofiber membrane (NFM) containing uniformly dispersed MoO 2 nanoparticles is facilely fabricated via electrospinning and subsequent controlled reduction-carbonization. This NFM is used directly as a binder-free anode in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The self-standing carbon/MoO 2 (C/MoO 2 ) NFM electrode has a good capacity retention, a satisfactory rate capability and a high reversible capacity of 811 mAh g –1 after 100 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g –1 , which is superior to most other MoO 2 -based anodes. The superior electrochemical properties of the resultant C/MoO 2 NFM are attributed to the cooperative effects from the excellent conductivity of the carbon nanofiber matrix, the high electrochemical performance of MoO 2 , the unique one-dimensional nanofiber structure and the three-dimensional porous network structure. The present C/MoO 2 NFM may be an attractive candidate as an anode material for LIBs.
