Aerobic oxidative desulfurization (AODS) offers a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to conventional diesel desulfurization techniques. However, despite its potential, the development of catalysts with both high activity and stability remains a critical challenge in this field. Here we present the synthesis of polyoxometalate (POM) derived Co,N-codoped MoO x nanoclusters on graphene sheets for boosting the AODS reactions, which combines the characteristics of sub-nanometer size of POMs and excellent stability of metal oxides. Through experimental characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we demonstrate that the MoO x nanoclusters can effectively activate O 2 by electron transfer, while the doped Co and N elements further optimize the electronic structure of Mo sites, resulting in a significant enhancement in catalytic activity. The optimized catalyst exhibits an impressive turnover frequency of 67.88 h −1 in the oxidation of dibenzothiophene (DBT), facilitating the rapid conversion of various thiophenes under mild conditions. The catalyst also demonstrates prominent durability in seven cycles of reuse with consistent catalytic performance and unchanged chemical structure. More importantly, the catalyst achieves deep AODS of real diesel, showcasing its potential for practical applications.

Wounds infected with drug-resistant bacteria are hard to treat, which remains a serious problem in clinical practice. An innovative strategy for treating wound infections is thus imperative. Herein, we describe the construction of a nanocomposite from biocompatible poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/polyethylene glycol (PEG) hydrogel loaded biodegradable MoOx nanoparticles (NPs) and photosensitizer methylene blue (MB), denoted as MoOx@MB-hy. By incorporating MoOx@MB NPs, the nanocomposite hydrogel can act as a photoactivated wound dressing for near-infrared-II 1064 nm and 660 nm laser synergetic photothermal–photodynamic therapy (PTT–PDT). The key to PTT-induced heat becomes the most controllable release of MB from MoOx@MB-hy to produce more 1O2 under 660 nm irradiation. Importantly, MoOx@MB-hy can consume glutathione (GSH) and trap bacteria nearer to the distance limit of ROS damage to achieve a self-migration-enhanced accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), thereby conquering the intrinsic shortcomings of short diffusion distance and lifetime of ROS. Consequently, MoOx@MB-hy has high antibacterial efficiencies of 99.28% and 99.16% against Ampr E. coli and B. subtilis within 15 min. Moreover, the light-activated strategy can rapidly promote healing in wounds infected by drug-resistant bacteria. This work paves a way to design a novel nanocomposite hydrogel dressing for safe and highly-efficient antibacterial therapy.

There is an urgent need to develop photosensitive nanoenzymes with better phototherapeutic efficiency through simple processes. By exploiting semiconductor catalysis and defect chemistry principles, herein, a MnMoO x composite semiconductor nanoenzyme was developed to achieve a fully integrated theranostic nanoenzyme for highly efficient photo/chemo-enzyme-dynamic eradication of deep tumors. Relative to iron oxides, manganese oxides offer ideal catalytic performance under near-neutral conditions, which helps to broaden the suitable pH range of the MnMoO x nanoenzyme for antitumor therapy. Furthermore, with the assistance of glutathione depletion, Mn 4+ /Mo 6+ was successfully converted to Mn 2+ /Mo 5+ , inhibiting the scavenging of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and promoting cycling. Therefore, MnMoO x has favorable catalase (CAT)-like activity and oxidase (OXD)-like activity in the tumor microenvironment (TME) for promoting the “H 2 O 2 O 2 O 2 − ” and “H 2 O 2 OH” cascade reactions. The abundant oxygen vacancy defects also promote the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window of MnMoO x , which significantly enhanced its photothermal therapy (PTT) effect and catalytic activity. In detail, ROS production was significantly enhanced due to the adsorption of water and oxygen molecules by the rich oxygen vacancies of MnMoO x . MnMoO x also exhibited excellent multi-modal imaging activity (including computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and photoacoustic (PA)), which can be exploited to better guide the administration of medication.

The rational design of high-performance non-noble metal electrocatalysts at large current densities is important for the development of sustainable energy conversion devices such as alkaline water electrolyzers. However, improving the intrinsic activity of those non-noble metal electrocatalysts remains a great challenge. Therefore, Ni 2 P/MoO x decorated three-dimensional (3D) NiFeP nanosheets (NiFeP@Ni 2 P/MoO x ) with abundant interfaces were synthesized using facile hydrothermal and phosphorization methods. NiFeP@Ni 2 P/MoO x exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at a high current density of −1000 mA cm −2 with a low overpotential of 390 mV. Surprisingly, it can operate steadily at a large current density of −500 mA cm −2 for 300 h, indicating its long-term durability under high current densities. The boosted electrocatalytic activity and stability can be ascribed to the as-fabricated heterostructures via interface engineering, leading to modifying the electronic structure, improving the active area, and enhancing the stability. Besides, the 3D nanostructure is also beneficial for exposing abundant accessible active sites. Therefore, this research proposes a considerable route for fabricating non-noble metal electrocatalysts by interface engineering and 3D nanostructure applied in large-scale hydrogen production facilities.

A series of MoO x -promoted Ir/BN catalysts were tested for liquid phase selective hydrogenation of crotonaldehyde. The MoO x -promotion could significantly improve the reactivity up to 5-fold. Such improvement was mainly due to the formation of Ir-MoO x interfacial sites in the promoted catalyst, which accelerated the adsorption and activation of crotonaldehyde molecule as evidenced by a much lower activation energy (18.9 kJ mol −1 on the 0.3Mo-3Ir/BN versus 38.4 kJ mol −1 on the 3Ir/BN). The kinetic results revealed negative reaction order of crotonaldehyde (up to -1.1) and high reaction order of H 2 (up to 2.2), indicating the high coverage of crotonaldehyde on the catalyst surface suppressed the adsorption of H 2 due to its low solubility in the liquid phase. Therefore, the adsorption and activation of H 2 on the catalyst might be the rate determining step. However, the preferred adsorption of crotonaldehyde on the Ir-MoO x interface alleviated the suppression of H 2 adsorption, which was another reason for the higher activity.

Electrochemical water splitting represents a sustainable pathway for hydrogen production. However, its widespread application is hindered by the high cost of platinum-based catalysts required for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the substantial energy input associated with the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The urea oxidation reaction (UOR), with a theoretical potential as low as 0.37 V vs. RHE, presents an energetically favourable alternative. Nevertheless, its practical implementation is challenged by a complex six-electron transfer process, necessitating highly active catalysts. While state-of-the-art Ru- or Mo-based catalysts often depend on intricate synthetic routes or the construction of crystalline heterostructures, this study introduces a distinct strategy: the fabrication of Ru-doped amorphous molybdenum oxide (Ru-MoO x /NF) via a facile one-step electrodeposition method. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal strong electronic interactions between Ru and the amorphous framework termed “electron-amorphous synergy” which effectively tunes the electronic structure and markedly enhances catalytic activity toward both HER and UOR. Remarkably, when employed in a dual-electrode urea-assisted electrolytic system, the catalyst achieves a current density of 10 mA cm -2 at an exceptionally low cell voltage of 1.323 V and maintains stable performance over 30 hours at this current density, surpassing numerous previously reported bifunctional catalysts. This work highlights the great potential of manipulating the amorphous structure through atomic doping as a simple yet effective strategy, distinct from crystalline heterointerface engineering, for designing high-performance bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Hierarchical hybrid heterostructures are regarded to be promising materials for highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts and high-performance supercapacitors due to their intriguing morphological features and remarkable electrochemical properties . Herein, we demonstrate the rational construct of cost-effective MoO x @NiS 2 hybrid nanostructures as bifunctional electrocatalysts and the electrode material of supercapacitor . Microstructural analysis shows that the hybrid is a kind of hierarchical heterostructure composed of open and porous NiS 2 nanowrinkles in situ grown on non-stoichiometric MoO x nanorods , which greatly improves the conductivity, and effectively maximized the electrochemical surface area. As expected, the MoO x @NiS 2 hybrid show remarkable electrocatalytic performance in alkaline media , such as overpotentials of 101 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and 278 mV at 20 mA cm −2 for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and a low cell voltage of 1.62 V to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Moreover, the hybrid nanostructures present a high specific capacitance 1050 A/g at 1 A/g with ultra-long stability in 6 M KOH. The strategy proposed here introduces a new perspective about the development of efficient earth-abundant bifunctional elecrocatalysts and electrode materials for superior energy conversion and storage devices.

Commercial Pt/C is the best electrocatalyst for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution due to its high activity and fast electron transfer kinetics. However, the poor stability under high current density and high cost limits its large-scale application. Here, we managed to fabricate a stable catalyst where MoOx stabilized Pt nanoparticles is supported on Ketjen Black via impregnation–annealing method. This catalyst exhibited a low overpotential of 4 mV (@10 mA cm−2) and 29 mV (@100 mA cm−2) and considerable long-term stability for 100 h toward acid hydrogen evolution reaction, outperforming commercial 20 wt% Pt/C. The excellent catalytic performances can be assigned to the existence of amorphous MoOx which can transport electrons to Pt nanoparticles and prevent Pt nanoparticles from agglomeration. This work provided a simple synthesis strategy to synthesize an amorphous MoOx protected Pt nanoparticles catalyst with good activity and stability, which can be an alternative to commercial Pt/C for acid hydrogen evolution reaction.

Achieving both high efficiency and long-term stability remains a key challenge for organic and perovskite solar cells (OSCs/PSCs), hindered by defects and suboptimal electronic properties in solution-processed transition metal oxide hole transport layers (HTLs). Here, we present a universal valence-engineering strategy for Mo-based HTLs via Fe 3+ doping in ammonium tetramolybdate hydrolysis solutions and low-temperature annealing. Fe incorporation modulates oxygen vacancies and the Mo 6+ /Mo 5+ ratio, yielding Fe-doped molybdenum oxide (FMo) HTLs with improved conductivity, higher work function, and reduced trap density. Devices employing FMo HTLs exhibit superior power conversion efficiencies of 20.50% (OSC) and 26.05% (PSC), along with exceptional stability, outperforming conventional solution-processed and vacuum-deposited counterparts. The strategy is compatible with various active layer systems and is scalable to large-area devices, highlighting its potential for industrial photovoltaic manufacturing.

Red mud supported Ni (Ni/RM) catalysts have been explored to the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of palmitic acid, however, the decarbonylation (DCO)/decarboxylation (DCO 2 ) is dominant. Therefore, the modification the oxophilic nature of catalysts can significantly impact their path of HDO and selectivity to aim products. Herein, MoO x -decorated Ni-Mo/RM catalysts with a hierarchical flower-like micro/nanostructure were prepared and applied in the HDO of palmitic acid. The effect of MoO x addition was investigated to control the path of HDO, resulting in the changing of carbon number distribution of the product. Combined with several comprehensive structural characterizations and catalytic HDO test, it is shown that the surface defective MoO x species and FeO x species near the metallic sites could significantly facilitate the C-O bond weakening, generated more direct deoxygenation product (hexadecane). Whereas the excessive Mo loading leads to clear altering of surface chemistry (i.e., decrease of specific surface area, pore volume and Mo 0 species, increase of reduction temperature and CO 2 adsorption, uneven dispersion, and agglomeration of Ni species), resulting in the decrease of palmitic acid conversion. As the main oxide in RM, Fe 2 O 3 , Al 2 O 3 and SiO 2 were used as supports to load Ni-Mo bimetals respectively to explore the contribution of different components in RM to the distribution of hydrodeoxygenation products of palmitic acid.

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) hole injection layer plays an important role in planar Si/PEDOT:PSS heterojunction solar cells (HSCs). Herein, a MoO x mixed aqueous PEDOT:PSS cosolvent is developed and is applied into a Si/PEDOT:PSS solar cell preparation via a time-saving one-step spin-coating method. With an optimal concentration of MoO x dopants, the power conversion efficiency of the device exhibits from 10.26% up to 13.82% with all inherent photovoltaic parameters enhanced. The detailed characterization and analytical results indicate that an advanced electronic property is produced by MoO x dopants and interface optimization caused by synergistic effects from Mo 5+ and Mo 6+ species with PEDOT:PSS, which enhances its interface work function and promotes hole transportation capacity. The result paves a path for exploring efficient Si/PEDOT:PSS HSCs with suitable functional material and a simple solution-processable method.

Monometallic (V/TiO 2 and Mo/TiO 2 ) and bimetallic (V-Mo/TiO 2 ) catalysts were prepared for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO x with NH 3 at low temperatures (100–300 °C). The effect of MoO x on the dispersion of vanadia with different V 2 O 5 loadings was investigated on the basis of X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), N 2 adsorption–desorption, Raman spectroscopy, ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), H 2 temperature-programmed reduction (H 2 -TPR) and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). As the molybdenum precursor, NH 4 Mo 7 O 24 increased the solution acidity and promoted polymerization of VO x in liquid phase. At a low vanadia loading, polymerization of VO x , the adsorption rate of NH 3 and transformation of active intermediate species NH 2 were enhanced by adding MoO x , while at a high vanadia loading, the steric hindrance became dominant leading to the formation of crystalline V 2 O 5 and MoO 3 and caused decline in SCR activity.
