This study proposed a novel strategy to control nitrogen oxides (NOx) precursors by directing nitrogen to adhere to the fuel-N→NH 3 →N 2 pathway. The research aimed to illuminate the regulatory effects of CaO, Fe 2 O 3 , and their mixtures on NO and N 2 O precursors (NH 3 , HCN, and HNCO) during sludge pyrolysis, further sought to establish scientific correlations with varying temperatures and differentiate their impact. The findings indicated that unlike NH 3 , HNCO is generated from the cleavage of amides, sharing its origin with HCN. Notably, the sensitivities of three conditioners to different functional groups result in distinct impacts on precursor emissions. CaO interacted with –OH and N-H functional groups, releasing NH 3 . Fe 2 O 3 , being more responsive to C-H and C-C groups, contributed to HNCO emission. At 750 °C, a CaO-Fe 2 O 3 mixture created Ca x Fe y O z , which selectively reacted with N-H and C≡N, facilitating the conversion of HNCO and HCN to NH 3 . While temperature is a crucial factor in the performance of CaO, its impact on Fe 2 O 3 is primarily confined to transformation of heterocyclic and nitrile . Below 350 °C, Fe 2 O 3 favored the evolution of nitrogen into heterocyclic compounds within tar. Conversely, above 490 °C, it inhibited the formation of nitrile in char, promoting the dehydrogenation of tar into unsaturated aromatic structures. The CaO-Fe 2 O 3 mixtures exhibited a superposition of individual effects from CaO and Fe 2 O 3 , with Ca x Fe y O z stimulating N 2 emission. Importantly, among three conditioners, Fe 2 O 3 showed the most significant abatement effect on NOx precursors, primarily through nitrogen fixation in char, nitrogen enrichment in tar, and precursor oxidation. This research contributes innovative perspectives on nitrogen regulation in nitrogen-rich fuels, the utilization of NH 3 , and effective NO and N 2 O control.

The effects of various factors on the NO removal activity in the (NH 4 ) 2 SO 3 solution were investigated to explore more details and characteristics of the related reactions using full infrared sensor flue gas analyzer (FISFGA). It was found that the conversion yield of NO (9.0%–29.0%) was obviously improved with the increase of gas–liquid contact area, NO residence time and (NH 4 ) 2 SO 3 concentration as well as the adding of CuSO 4 . However, it was mainly limited by gas–liquid mass transfer rate and slightly inhibited by the gas velocity. Moreover, the FISFGA analysis revealed that two nitric oxide (NO) conversion route with different reduction product of N 2 O and N 2 existed simultaneously upon the existence form of SO 3 2− . It was confirmed by the calculations and the experiments of pH factor that the NO reduction steps were based on the following equation: (1) NO + HSO 3 − ⇋ N 2 O + SO 4 2− + H + ; (2) NO + SO 3 2− ⇋ N 2 + SO 4 2− . In this system, Eq. (1) with N 2 O product was the major pathway, but the ratio of Eqs. (2) to (1) was intensified in the presence of CuSO 4 . It is believed that the suitable additives could promote the NO reduction to N 2 furtherly.

Microplastics and antibiotics are emerging contaminants that can elicit considerable adverse effects on carbon and nitrogen cycles and greenhouse gas emissions. The effect of the combined occurrence of antibiotics and different types of microplastics on soil ecosystem is poorly understood. We investigated the effects of oxytetracycline (OTC), polylactic acid (PLA) microplastics, and polyethylene (PE) microplastics alone and in combination on plant root growth traits, soil extracellular enzymatic activity, and nitrous oxide (N 2 O) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions from the soil. Plant root growth traits including root area, root surface area, root volume and root branches were negatively affected by all treatments; soil extracellular enzymatic activity was also negatively affected by all treatments expect for the cellobiohydrolase. The results showed that CO 2 emission increased in all treatments, with a maximum increase of 505 % in the PLA treatment; however, N 2 O emissions increased in the OTC treatment by 44 % but decreased in all other treatments as compared to the control. Furthermore, partial least squares path modeling analysis suggested that soil extracellular enzymes significantly influenced soil N 2 O and CO 2 emissions ( P < 0.05) and had a strong correlation with root growth traits ( P < 0.05). We thus concluded that changes in soil extracellular enzymatic activities and plant root growth traits, which were affected by different microplastic and antibiotic treatments, influenced soil CO 2 and N 2 O gas emissions.

Two consecutive experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation with red cabbage extract (RCE) rich in anthocyanins on the nitrogen (N) metabolism in beef bulls and the nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions from the soil applied with the urine of beef bulls. In Experiment 1, 8 Simmental beef bulls (body weight 387.9 ± 40.7 kg) were used as experimental animals . Two levels of RCE, i.e. 0 and 114 g dry matter per day, were supplemented to a basal ration as experimental treatments. The animals and the treatments were allocated in a 2 × 2 crossover design. In Experiment 2, the static incubation technique was used to determine the N 2 O-N emissions from the soil applied with the urine samples collected from Experiment 1. The results of Experiment 1 indicated that RCE supplementation did not affect the N excretion, N retention, and N retention rate in beef bulls ( P > 0.10). However, RCE supplementation increased the ratio of hippuric acid-N/urinary N ( P < 0.05) and tended to increase the ratio of creatinine-N/urinary N ( P = 0.081) without changing the excretion of other urinary nitrogenous components ( P > 0.10). Plasma metabolome analysis indicated that RCE supplementation upregulated 12 metabolites while downregulated 18 metabolites ( P < 0.05). The results of Experiment 2 indicated that RCE supplementation reduced the estimated urine N 2 O-N emissions by 33.1% through decreasing the ratio of N 2 O-N/urine-N ( P < 0.05). In conclusion, RCE supplementation did not affect the N retention and N excretion of beef bulls, whereas it attenuated the urine N 2 O-N emissions of beef bulls through increasing urinary hippuric acid excretions.

Valorization
of nitrous oxide (N 2 O), a potent greenhouse
gas, through cooperative reforming with light alkanes offers a promising
route toward carbon-negative hydrogen production. Here, we report
a Ru 1+n /ZnO catalyst that integrates isolated ruthenium
single atoms (Ru 1 ) with subnanometre ruthenium nanoparticles
(Ru n ), enabling cascade N 2 O valorization coupled
with propane dry reforming. The catalyst reduces noble-metal cost
by ∼70% compared with Ir-based benchmarks while delivering
markedly enhanced hydrogen production (145.1 mol H 2 kg cat –1 h –1 ) together with
stable operation for at least 72 h. Mechanistic studies reveal that
densely anchored Ru 1 sites in close proximity to Ru n electronically modulate the nanoparticles toward a more metallic
state, promoting hydrocarbon activation. Meanwhile, CH x * intermediates formed on Ru n are rapidly
consumed through reforming with O* species generated on satellite
Ru 1 via N 2 O activation, enabling an efficient
cascade reaction pathway that suppresses side reactions and enhances
hydrogen generation. This work demonstrates a cooperative single-atom–nanoparticle
catalytic strategy for greenhouse-gas valorization and efficient hydrogen
production, providing insights into the rational design of multifunctional
reforming catalysts.

Nitrous oxide is a potent greenhouse gas and ozone-depleting substance that requires precise monitoring at trace levels in the atmosphere. This paper reports a high-performance mixed potential sensor based on yttrium-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte and BaSnO 3 sensing electrode (SE) for ppb-level N 2 O detection. By introducing a carbon pore-forming agent to regulate the electrode microstructure, a porous mixed conductor BaSnO 3 -SE was successfully fabricated and the sensor performance is significantly enhanced due to extending the triple phase boundary (TPB) length and promoting N 2 O gas diffusion. The experimental results show that compared with BaSnO 3 -SE without carbon additive, the introduction of 10 wt.% carbon into BaSnO 3 -SE leads to the sensitivity increase of the sensor from 29.9 mV/decade to 57.3 mV/decade, while making the detection limit lower from 100 ppb to 25 ppb at 225°C. In addition, the sensor maintains excellent stability over 30 days, exhibits excellent selectivity for common interfering gases and has a predictable oxygen partial pressure dependence. However, humidity greatly interferences the sensor response, which is attributed to higher adsorption energy of H 2 O relative to N 2 O by DFT calculations. The mixed potential response mechanism of the sensor was rigorously confirmed by combining the Tafel curve analysis and mixed potential theoretical derivation. This study proposes a simple and effective electrode structure optimization strategy, which provides an important theoretical and experimental basis for the design of high-precision N 2 O sensors.

Aqueous ammonia can release high nitrogen inorganic substances of ammonia and has been used as soil fumigant. However, the information about how fumigation with ammonia affects the soil microbial community is still limited. In this study, a laboratory microcosm experiment was conducted to evaluated the effectiveness of ammonia fumigation in controlling root-knot nematodes (RKNs), its influence on soil microbial diversity, and its impact on nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. The results indicated that Ammonia treatment increased N2O emissions and decreased the RKNs population by 75.73%. Adding the inhibitors N-(N-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT) and Dicyandiamide (DCD) to aqueous ammonia can mitigate N2O emissions. Compared with CK treatment, Soil enzyme activities, including those of urease, nitrate reductase, and nitrite reductase, were enhanced in each treatment. The fungal Sobs index was significantly higher in CK treatment than in the other treatments, whereas bacterial alpha diversity remained unaffected. This study also indicates that soil fumigation with aqueous ammonia has the potential to regulate fungal communities and important key reactions involved in nitrogen cycling.

A novel strategy for achieving partial denitrification (PD) driven by sludge fermentation products (SFPs) based on periodate (PI) pretreatment was proposed. Results showed that PI pretreatment significantly enhanced short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) yield by promoting waste activated sludge (WAS) disintegration and substrate conversion while stimulating the activity of acidogenic bacteria. Specifically, the maximal SCFAs yield increased from 552.5 ± 16.3 to 3219.0 ± 37.4 mg COD/L with PI dosage increasing from 0 to 0.25 g/g TSS. In batch tests, PD driven by 0.05 g PI/g TSS-pretreated SFPs fermentation exhibited excellent performance, achieving higher nitrite (NO 2 − -N) accumulation (22.7 mg/L) and nitrate transformation ratio (97.26 %) compared to other PI-pretreated SFPs. Remarkably, compared with sodium acetate as the carbon source, SFPs reduced N 2 O emissions during denitrification by 35.6 %–52.7 %. Linear discriminant analysis of effect size (LEfSe) indicated that PI pretreatment selectively enriched fermentative functional bacteria. Metagenomic analysis revealed that PI pretreatment significantly upregulated the expression of key functional genes involved in hydrolytic and acidogenic pathways, while inhibiting methanogenesis-related genes. Particularly, the PI-pretreated SFPs exhibited superior multi‑carbon metabolic pathways, causing more electron flow toward nitrate reduction, thereby confirming the outstanding NO 2 − -N accumulation capacity in the PD. Furthermore, the addition of 0.05 g PI/g TSS reduced the total abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in WAS by 12.7 %, achieving effective ARGs removal. This strategy innovatively enabled both efficient WAS utilization and carbon emission reduction, providing a practical and sustainable approach for the operation of wastewater treatment plants.

PFOA has garnered heightened scrutiny for its impact on denitrification, especially given its frequent detection in secondary effluent discharged from wastewater treatment plants. However, it is still unclear what potential risk PFOA release poses to a typical advanced treatment process, especially the sulfur-based autotrophic denitrification (SAD) process. In this study, different PFOA concentration were tested to explore their impact on denitrification kinetics and microbial dynamic responses of the SAD process. The results showed that an increase PFOA concentration from 0 to 1000 μg/L resulted in a decrease in nitrate removal rate from 9.52 to 7.73 mg-N/L·h. At the same time, it increased nitrite accumulation and N 2 O emission by 6.11 and 2.03 times, respectively. The inhibitory effect of PFOA on nitrate and nitrite reductase activity in the SAD process was linked to the observed fluctuations in nitrate and nitrite levels. It is noteworthy that nitrite reductase was more vulnerable to the influence of PFOA than nitrate reductase. Furthermore, PFOA showed a significant impact on gene expression and microbial community. Metabolic function prediction revealed a notable decrease in nitrogen metabolism and an increase in sulfur metabolism under PFOA exposure. This study highlights that PFOA has a considerable inhibitory effect on SAD performance.

A series of Sm-doped Co 3 O 4 catalysts for the N 2 O direct catalytic decomposition were synthesized by the sol–gel method using citric acid as a chelating agent and urea as a combustion agent. The doping of Sm significantly altered the activity of N 2 O decomposition on the Co 3 O 4 catalyst. Sm was incorporated into the Co 3 O 4 matrix, leading to the distortion of Co 3 O 4 lattice with the spinel configuration maintained. Sm-doping can effectively promote the oxygen vacancy generation, and the electron interaction between Co and Sm species occurred as the Co 3+ + Sm 2+ ↔ Co 2+ + Sm 3+ redox cycle. Combined with in situ Raman and in situ NAP-XPS results proposed that this redox cycle is the main reason that the Sm-doping accelerates the high-efficiency N 2 O decomposition.

Sustainable nitrogen cycle is an essential biogeochemical process that ensures ecosystem safety and byproduct greenhouse gas nitrous oxide reduction. Antimicrobials are always co-occurring with anthropogenic reactive nitrogen sources. However, their impacts on the ecological safety of microbial nitrogen cycle remain poorly understood. Here, a denitrifying bacterial strain Paracoccus denitrificans PD1222 was exposed to a widespread broad-spectrum antimicrobial triclocarban (TCC) at environmental concentrations. The denitrification was hindered by TCC at 25 μg L–1 and was completely inhibited once the TCC concentration exceeded 50 μg L–1. Importantly, the accumulation of N2O at 25 μg L–1 of TCC was 813 times as much as the control group without TCC, which attributed to the significantly downregulated expression of nitrous oxide reductase and the genes related to electron transfer, iron, and sulfur metabolism under TCC stress. Interestingly, combining TCC-degrading denitrifying Ochrobactrum sp. TCC-2 with strain PD1222 promoted the denitrification process and mitigated N2O emission by 2 orders of magnitude. We further consolidated the importance of complementary detoxification by introducing a TCC-hydrolyzing amidase gene tccA from strain TCC-2 into strain PD1222, which successfully protected strain PD1222 against the TCC stress. This study highlights an important link between TCC detoxification and sustainable denitrification and suggests a necessity to assess the ecological risks of antimicrobials in the context of climate change and ecosystem safety.

Nitrous oxide (N 2 O) is a potent greenhouse gas, but its chemical inertness hinders sensitive chemiresistive sensing. We demonstrate here that Au-decorated ZnO (Au-ZnO) dramatically enhances N 2 O detection. At an operating temperature of 260 ° C, the Au-ZnO sensor responds to 25 ppm N 2 O with a value of 7.6, which is a 3.8-fold enhancement over the ZnO sensor. It also exhibits high selectivity against common greenhouse gases, a lower theoretical limit of detection (0.24 ppm), a fast response time (10 s), and reliable stability. The previously elusive mechanism has been uncovered by integrating experimental characterizations and density functional theory calculations. A strong metal–support interaction, abundant oxygen vacancies at the Au-ZnO interface, and an electron-rich surface collectively switch N 2 O adsorption geometry from the O-end (physisorption on ZnO) to the N-end (weak chemisorption on Au-ZnO). This switch induces significant intramolecular charge rearrangement of N 2 O, which is crucial for enhancing the selective N 2 O sensing reaction. The abundance of reactive sites, the spillover effect, and the catalytic action of Au nanoparticles, as well as the narrowed band gap, promote N 2 O adsorption, surface reactions, and rapid charge transfer collectively. This work goes beyond the traditional oxygen-ionosorption model by showing that switching adsorption geometry and intramolecular polarization are crucial for activating inert molecules. This provides a detailed explanation of how to create high-performance N 2 O sensors.
