Hydrogen-rich syngas was produced from co-gasification of CS and CG. • 4Ce-8Ni/C-CaO markedly enhanced H 2 formation and syngas quality. • The maximum H 2 content reached 59.71 mol%. • Ce promoted Ni dispersion, oxygen vacancy formation, and coke resistance. The catalytic co-gasification of agricultural residues and coal-derived solid wastes offers an industrially promising route for converting low-value carbon resources into hydrogen-rich syngas. In this study, a Ce-Ni/C-CaO composite catalyst was prepared by impregnation and applied to the steam-assisted co-gasification of corn stover (CS) and coal gangue (CG) in a two-stage fixed-bed system. The effects of metal loading, feedstock ratio, temperature, and steam flow rate were investigated, the structure-performance relationship of the catalyst was further examined using XRD, SEM/BET, TEM/STEM-EDS, XPS, H 2 -TPR and O 2 -TG analyses. Under the optimal conditions of CS:CG = 5:5, pyrolysis at 850 ℃, reforming at 900 ℃, and a steam flow rate of 1 mL/min, the 4Ce/8Ni-C/CaO catalyst achieved an H 2 content of 59.71 mol% and a total gas yield of 19.13 mmol/g and an H 2 /CO ratio of 5.22. Characterization results indicated that the Ce species regulated the distribution of surface oxygen species, enhanced oxygen mobility, promoted the Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ redox cycle, and influenced the evolution of catalyst pore structure during the reaction. The development of a carbon-based catalyst for selective transformation of renewable lignin to value-added chemicals is a fascinating chemical upgrade route. In this study, the highly efficient Ni/C catalysts derived from waste biomass tar was fabricated for selective hydrogenation-transalkylation (HTTA) of guaiacol to 1-methyl-1,2-cyclohexanediol. Carbonization temperatures and activators can be used to regulate the contents of oxygen-containing functional groups on carbon surface, which further affect the catalytic performance. Results showed that the Ni/C-K-800 catalyst with KOH as activator and 800 ℃ as carbonization temperature exhibited the excellent catalytic performance (about 100 % conversion) for the guaiacol transformation at 220 ℃, 2 MPa H 2 for 2 h, and the final product could be stably controlled at 1-methyl-1,2-cyclohexanediol. Main reaction pathway of guaiacol over Ni/C catalyst was proposed: 1) conversion of guaiacol to 1-methyl-1,2-cyclohexanediol through transalkylation and hydrogenation of benzene ring; 2) transform of 1-methyl-1,2-cyclohexanediol to cyclohexanol through direct hydrogenolysis. Furthermore, biomass tar-derived carbon support has good resistance towards carbon accumulation on Ni metals. These findings can provide a basis for designing green and efficient catalyst derived from biomass tar for biomass upgrading.

The synthesis or decomposition of complex substances through the combination of metals and enzymes is desirable but still a huge challenge. A kind of yolk-shell structured Co/C@SiO 2 @Ni/C nanocomposites were prepared by the polyhedral ZIF-67@SiO 2 composite as a precursor through the extended stöber method and subsequent carbonization treatment. The SiO 2 as an intermediate protective layer stabilized the morphology and structure of the carbonized products. The metallic nickel nanoparticles were uniformly distributed on the surface of Co/C@SiO 2 @Ni/C for highly specific absorption of His-tagged organophosphohydrolase (OpdA) from cell lysates via affinity, and therefore an integrated nanocatalyst (INC) named OpdA@Co/C@SiO 2 @Ni/C was successfully prepared. The prepared INC was applied to achieve a one-pot chemoenzymatic cascade degradation of organophosphates (OPs) to p -aminophenol (PAP) within 30 min. In addition, the INC proved to be a simple and high-sensitivity nanocatalyst for the detection of methyl-parathion with a low limit of detection (0.30 μM). The INC exhibited improved pH stability, thermal stability, SDS resistance, and storage stability compared to that of free enzymes. When OpdA@Co/C@SiO 2 @Ni/C was reused for 7 cycles, the cascade degradation efficiency of methyl-parathion could retain more than 60 %. This study provides a strategy for constructing a multifunctional nanocatalyst, and further demonstrated its potential in biocatalysis, accurate detection of OPs and remediation of environmental pollution.

A concentrated solar reaction device has been designed for the solar-driven photothermal CO2 reverse water–gas shift reaction, in which solar-to-chemical conversion efficiency would be up to 26% via a concentrated solar panel. Meanwhile, a special photothermal Ni–C–In catalyst (Ni/C–In2O3) with interstitial C, the In3Ni2 intermetallic compound, and disordered Ni clusters has been synthesized. As a result, the SO2-tolerant Ni/C–In2O3 catalyst exhibits an outstanding solar-driven photothermal catalytic performance (near thermodynamic limitation) with 100% CO selectivity and a 20.96 mmol gcat–1 h–1 CO production rate for solar-driven CO2 hydrogenation under concentrated solar irradiation (around 1521.9 mW/cm2) even sunlight without external heating. The incorporation of interstitial C and exposed Ni clusters in the Ni–C–In intermetallic catalyst could strengthen intensive solar light absorption. Moreover, quasi in situ XPS and DFT theoretical calculation results validate that asymmetric interaction between interstitial C and the Ni-cluster not only effectually regulates the electronic structure of the Ni–C–In intermetallic catalyst but also greatly optimizes the activation of H2 and CO2 molecules and the energy barriers of key reaction dynamics (HCOO* formation and dehydrogenation) in the RWGS reaction. Accordingly, this study provides a promising strategy for the electronic structure modification of photothermal functional catalysts with C modification to boost CO2 hydrogenation, putting forward an important step toward practical solar-to-fuel production with concentrated natural sunlight.

The electrochemical conversion of glycerol into dihydroxyacetone (DHA) under mild conditions efficiently addresses glycerol surplus, enhancing its economic value. However, DHA production efficiency remains constrained by steric hindrance from secondary hydroxyl groups and sluggish glycerol electro-oxidation reaction (GOR) kinetics in weakly alkaline conditions. Herein, lignin-derived carbon-supported MnO–Ni heterojunction catalyst (MnO–Ni/C) is synthesized via self-assembly precipitation and in situ pyrolysis. The optimized MnO–Ni/C catalyst requires a low potential of 1.58 V to achieve 10 mA cm −2 , 270 mV lower than the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). It attains a 53.37% DHA selectivity with a high production rate of 864.75 mmol m −2 h −1 at 1.8 V. MnO–Ni/C heterostructures modulate the local electronic structure of Ni sites, optimizing glycerol adsorption configuration and enhancing selective adsorption of secondary hydroxyl groups and oxygen active species near the electrode surface. These synergistic effects significantly improve GOR kinetics and DHA production efficiency.

Rechargeable systems based on sulfur cathodes have attracted considerable interest as promising candidates for advanced energy storage owing to their exceptionally large theoretical energy density. However, widespread implementation of these batteries is still hindered by several intrinsic challenges. In particular, soluble lithium polysulfide intermediates tend to dissolve into the electrolyte and migrate between electrodes, which leads to active material loss and severe capacity decay. In addition, the redox conversion reactions involving these sulfur species proceed relatively slowly, resulting in poor reaction kinetics and reduced electrochemical efficiency. In this work, a nickel@carbon (Ni@C) composite was synthesized from a nickel-based metal–organic framework (Ni-MOF) constructed using 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (BDC) obtained from recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic. The synthesized composite was later integrated with a carbon membrane containing both nitrogen and sulfur dopants, which had been derived from recycled corrugated paper. The obtained free-standing Ni@C/NSCM membrane provides effective physical confinement and strong chemical adsorption toward polysulfide intermediates while simultaneously facilitating their rapid redox conversion. In addition, the synergistic effect between N/S heteroatom dopants and the embedded Ni@C nanoparticles enhances electronic transport and promotes reaction kinetics. By employing operando impedance measurements together with distribution-of-relaxation-times evaluation, the device utilizing the Ni@C/NSCM cathode exhibits considerably reduced polarization resistance relative to the cell based on the untreated NSCM framework. This observation verifies that the embedded nickel nanostructures provide a catalytic role during the electrochemical reactions. Consequently, the Ni@C/NSCM/Li2S6 cathode with a sulfur loading of 3.84 mg delivers 980.1 mAh g–1 at 0.2 C and retains 96.5% of its capacity after 200 cycles. Remarkably, even with 8.0 mg of sulfur, the cell still maintains 92.8% capacity retention at 0.1 C. Overall, the present study offers an environmentally friendly approach for transforming discarded plastic and biomass resources into efficient binder-free electrode materials.
