The design of efficient, stable, and non-noble metal-based bifunctional electrocatalysts remains a great challenge. The synergistic effect can adjust the local electronic structure to improve the catalytic performance. In this work, an Fe Prussian blue analog was grown in situ on the surface of NiCo precursor nanoneedles at room temperature, and then one-dimensional unique NiCoP@FeP hierarchical nanocomposites were constructed by subsequent phosphating. The optimized NiCoP@FeP with strong electronic interactions showed a low overpotential of 268 mV at 50 mA cm−2 for the OER and 75 mV at 10 mA cm−2 for the HER. Moreover, for water splitting, the bifunctional catalyst required only a low cell voltage of 1.58 V to reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2 with excellent durability. This work provides a new synthesis strategy to construct non-noble metal heterostructure bifunctional electrocatalysts using the Prussian blue analog in the future.

Constructing core–shell structures is an encouraging method to increase the energy storage ability of supercapacitors. In this study, a tree-like NiCoP@NiCoS/CC (CC: carbon cloth) composite was synthesized, with NiCoP nanowires serving as a conductive skeleton for stable electron transport and structural support. NiCoS nanosheets coated the nanowires, forming a conductive network that increased the atom utilization and area for electrochemical reactions. The number of NiCoS electrodeposition cycles was varied to optimize the electrochemical performance. Electrochemical test results revealed optimal performance with 10 deposition cycles (2372.6 F g–1 at 1 A g–1). An asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) was assembled using NiCoP@NiCoS/CC as the positive electrode and activated carbon as the negative electrode. The device delivered a power density of 800 W kg–1 at 1.6 V and an energy density of 55.42 Wh kg–1, with only 23.7% capacity loss after 10,000 cycles. These results underscore the potential of NiCoP@NiCoS/CC electrodes for advancing core–shell heterostructures in next-generation wearable energy storage devices.

We have reported the synthesis of hierarchical whisker-on-sheet (HWS) NiCoP anchored on Ni foam with adjustable surface structure for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The HWS NiCoP was obtained by controllable phosphidation of HWS Ni–Co-carbonates hydroxide precursor grown on Ni foam (NF). The experimental parameters were optimally tuned to understand the formation process of the precursor and to regulate the microstructure of the materials. The test results indicated that the HWS NiCoP/NF can produce a current density of 10 mA cm−2 (η10) at a low overpotential of 59 mV and a current density of 100 mA cm−2 (η100) at an overpotential of 220 mV for HER. Notably, upon surface activation with KOH, the HER performance of HWS NiCoP/NF could be dramatically enhanced with η10 and η100 values of 42 mV and 141 mV, respectively. The HWS NiCoP/NF showed a superior performance to NiCoP displaying other morphologies (sheets and wires etc.) The good performance of HWS NiCoP/NF should be attributed to their special whisker-on-sheet structures that are favourable for effective contact with the electrolyte. Also, hydrated metals can be formed on surface after the alkali treatment step, which is beneficial to moderate the bonding to hydrogen and thus, improve the HER activity. The present study will be indicative toward the construction of highly-efficient HER catalysts by regulating the structure of the materials.

Supercapacitance electrode materials with rapid charging/discharging performance are considerably useful in practical applications for time saving. However, the supercapacitance performance of the electrode materials is sharply degraded with the increase in current density. To achieve fast energy storage for portable devices, bimetallic nickel cobalt phosphides (NiCoPs), composed of special fingerprint-like nanosheets (NSs), are developed as electrode materials, which exhibit a high specific supercapacitance under large charging/discharging current density. The NiCoP NSs are assembled using entangled nanowires with a wide pore size distribution through hydrothermal and phosphorization reactions. The influence of phosphorization temperature on the morphologies, chemical compositions, and supercapacitance performance of NiCoP compounds is investigated. Electrochemical tests show that the fingerprint-like NiCoP NSs deliver a high specific capacitance of 2360, 1900, and 900 F g −1 at 1, 20, and 50 A g −1 , respectively, indicating outstanding capacity retentions of 81% (1–20 A g −1 ) and 38% (1–50 A g −1 ) at large charging/discharging current density. The assembled asymmetric supercapacitor of NiCoP//activate carbon presents an energy density of 156 Wh kg −1 at 1331 W kg −1 and maintains 67.5 Wh kg −1 at 27000 W kg −1 in aqueous KOH electrolyte. The bimetallic NiCoPs with a tunable fingerprint-like structure can enhance conductivity, provide nanoporous channels, and facilitate fast electrochemical reactions , which are remarkably beneficial for rapid energy storage and conversion applications.

The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is critical for sustainable hydrogen production via water electrolysis, but its practical application is hindered by high energy barriers and the cost of noble metal catalysts. This study presents a highly efficient NiCoP nanocrystal catalyst supported on nitrogen and sulfur co-doped reduced graphene oxide (NSrGO). The NiCoP/NSrGO catalyst combines optimized electronic structure via cationic alloying with the enhanced dispersion of active sites and superior conductivity provided by the NSrGO substrate. The resulting catalyst demonstrates excellent HER performance, achieving current densities of 10 mA cm-2 with overpotentials of 115 mV, 236 mV, and 283 mV in acidic, alkaline, and alkalized seawater electrolytes, respectively. The results of density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that alloying can effectively balance hydrogen adsorption desorption and improve water dissociation kinetics. Additionally, the catalyst maintains long-term stability in seawater electrolysis, making it a promising candidate for scalable hydrogen production.

The design of ultra-stable cathode materials of Li-O 2 batteries with excellent catalytic performance is very important and desirable. However, some problems such as sluggish electrochemical reaction kinetics and unwanted side reactions still remain challenging. Carbon materials own hierarchical porous structure which facilitates mass transport and accommodates discharge products but are not stable enough as cathode of Li-O 2 batteries. Here in, we fabricated a unique NiCo bimetallic phosphide combined with carbon nanotube heterostructure (abbreviated as NiCoP/CNT) by hydrothermal method. Density functional theory (abbreviated as DFT) calculation demonstrates that bimetallic phosphide NiCoP/CNT delivered much better electrical conductivity, greater adsorption to reactants, and more electron transfer with discharge products Li 2 O 2 , compared to monometallic phosphides CoP and Ni 2 P. Therefore, NiCoP/CNT based cathode displayed low overpotential of 0.87 V at current of 100 mA g −1 with a fixed specific capacity of 1000 mAh g −1 and run steadily over 150 cycles under high current of 500 mA g −1 with a fixed specific capacity of 1000 mAh g −1 . Furthermore, Ex-situ X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and in-situ differential electrochemical mass spectroscopy proved the existence of intermediate products Li 2-x O 2 . This approach provides a reference for designing and synthesis of bimetallic cathode in Li-O 2 batteries.

Facing the current energy crisis, developing new green energy and advancing high-quality energy development are crucial, as multimetal sulfide semiconductors have great potential in photoenergy conversion. This study prepared a carbon-containing bimetallic phosphide (NiCoP@C) cocatalyst from a CoNi-based MOF, which was combined with ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS) hollow nanoflowers to enhance electrical conductivity and photocatalytic hydrogen production of the composite. XPS shows electron cloud density of ZIS increases in the composite via interfacial electronic reconstruction. FESEM reveals NiCoP@C nanoparticles are evenly anchored on surface and interlayer gaps of ZIS, forming a hierarchical heterostructure with more active sites. Performance tests show Z-NiCoP@C has a photocurrent density of 129.58 μA cm −2 (vs. 34 μA cm −2 of unmodified ZIS). Under 10 W visible light with 10% TEOA as a sacrificial agent, 10-h cumulative H 2 yield of the composite is 19.52 mmol g −1 , with a H 2 evolution rate of 1.95 mmol g −1 h −1 , 7.8-fold that of pristine ZIS (0.25 mmol g −1 h −1 ).

Transition-metal phosphides (TMPs) are promising electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but their industrial-scale application is limited by sluggish water dissociation kinetics and insufficient active site exposure under alkaline conditions. Herein, we demonstrate orbital hybridization engineering in Ni5P4/NiCoP-1 heterostructures fabricated via controlled phosphorization and magnetically modulated electrodeposition (MME). COMSOL simulations, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the heterointerface activates covalent Ni/Co–P bonding through optimized d–p orbital hybridization, leading to favorable electron density redistribution and an upshifted d-band center (ΔE = 0.061 eV). These electronic modifications synergistically enhance OH– adsorption energetics and accelerate water dissociation kinetics. Simultaneously, the strengthened metal–phosphorus bonds endow exceptional corrosion resistance under chloride-rich seawater conditions. As a result, Ni5P4/NiCoP-1 achieves excellent HER performance, requiring ultralow overpotentials of 266 and 325 mV to achieve a current density of 1000 mA cm–2 in 1.0 M KOH and seawater at pH 14, respectively, while maintaining stable operation for 200 h. In a two-electrode electrolyzer, the system requires only 1.62 V to reach 100 mA cm–2 in urea-assisted alkaline seawater, surpassing most reported TMP-based catalysts. The practical applicability is further verified by successfully powering a hydrogen-powered prototype vehicle. This work not only provides mechanistic insights into interfacial electronic structure modulation via d–p orbital hybridization but also establishes MME as a universal approach for high-rate hydrogen production from alkaline freshwater and seawater.

Tuning structure, morphology and electronic state of electrocatalysts is essential to achieve highly efficient water splitting. Herein, we report synthesis of snap bean-like multi-dimensional core/shell Ni/NiCoP nano-heterojunctions (NHs) by adopting a solid phase transformation strategy. In the special structure, Ni nanoparticles are enclosed and strung by single phased NiCoP, forming strings of Ni/NiCoP core/shell heterojunctions, which showed improved stability and activity for both hydrogen evolution (HER) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and synchrotron-radiation-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveal that interactions at the interface of Ni/NiCoP greatly changed electronic structures, which is a key intrinsic factor to underpin the enhanced electrocatalytic performance. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate Ni/NiCoP interface provide more optimal binding strength for H adatom and H 2 O molecule for HER, strong capture of hydroxyl, high valence Ni/Co species for OER. All these peculiarities facilitate the electrocatalytic process: only 1.57 V was needed to reach the current density of 10 mA·cm −2 for the overall water splitting using Ni/NiCoP NHs as both electrodes. This work demonstrates a facile strategy for synthesis of sophisticated catalytic interface at nano level and endows nano-heterojunction catalysts with enhanced performance for catalytic applications.

Advanced materials for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are significant for future sustainable energy. On the basis of transition metal phosphides (TMPs), we developed a method to engineer well-dispersed NiCoP nanoparticles by introducing carbon nanotubes on Ni Foam (CNT/NF) as a high active electrocatalyst for HER. The obtained catalysts were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and the catalytic activity was evaluated by electrochemical technique. The as-prepared NiCoP/CNT/NF electrode exhibits efficient electrocatalytic activity towards HER with an onset overpotential of 69 mV and a small Tafel slope in 1 M KOH. These results suggest the possibility for creating binder-free CNTs supported and element doped electrode in electrochemical water splitting.

Designing transition metal phosphides (TMPs) with remarkable performance and high stability for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a significant role in the commercial application of water splitting. Bimetallic phosphide (NiCoP) exhibits favorable electrocatalytic activity; however, it still suffers from intrinsic limitations such as insufficient intrinsic activity, inferior electrical conductivity, and a tendency toward particle agglomeration. To address these issues, a CeO 2 modified NiCoP particle catalyst (referred to as CeO 2 -NiCoP/Ti 3 C 2 T x ) loaded on a few layers of Ti 3 C 2 Tx MXene was synthesized using an HCl/LiF etching and hydrothermal phosphorization method. The CeO 2 -NiCoP/Ti 3 C 2 T x catalyst exhibits significantly lower overpotentials (287 mV for OER and 147 mV for HER) to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Moreover, the catalyst demonstrates outstanding durability, with 93.6% and 84.6% retention of its activity after 27 h of OER and 25 h of HER, respectively. The favorable performance of CeO 2 -NiCoP/Ti 3 C 2 T x in HER and OER can be attributed to several advantages. Few-layer Ti 3 C 2 T x enhances the electrical conductivity of the material, and its large specific surface area prevents particle agglomeration, thus improving the material stability. The -O/-OH functional groups on the surface of Ti 3 C 2 T x endow the material with strong hydrophilicity, which facilitates the full contact between active sites and the electrolyte and accelerates the mass transfer and charge transfer kinetics. CeO 2 effectively optimizes the adsorption energy of NiCoP toward hydrogen intermediates by regulating the microelectronic structure of NiCoP, thereby boosting the HER kinetics.

Alkaline water electrolysis offers a promising route for large-scale hydrogen production, but its efficiency is limited by the sluggish kinetics of both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we designed a hierarchical composite electrocatalyst comprising iridium-doped nickel-cobalt phosphide nanoparticles (Ir-NiCoP/Ni5P4) encapsulated within nickel-iron layered double hydroxide nanosheets (NiFe-LDH). Oxygen vacancies (OV) were engineered on the surface via sodium borohydride reduction, yielding an optimized catalyst denoted as Ir-NiCoP/Ni5P4@NiFe-LDH-1-OV. The optimized catalyst delivers low overpotentials of 52.7 mV for HER and 197.3 mV for OER at 10 mA cm-2 and maintains remarkable stability over 100 h for overall water splitting. Moreover, the Ir-NiCoP/Ni5P4@NiFe-LDH catalyst exhibits overpotentials of 76.7 and 101.3 mV for HER and the ammonia oxidation reaction A in 1 M KOH + NH3·H2O, respectively.
