Constructing Ru-O-TM Bridge in NiFe-LDH Enables High Current Hydrazine-assisted H2 Production

Yin Zhu,Yanxu Chen,Yafei Feng,Xiangmin Meng,Jing Xia,Genqiang Zhang

Hydrazine oxidation-assisted water splitting is a critical technology to tackle the high energy consumption in large-scale H 2 production. Ru-based electrocatalysts hold promise for synergetic hydrogen reduction (HER) and hydrazine oxidation (HzOR) catalysis but are hindered by excessive superficial adsorption of reactant intermediate. Herein, this work designs Ru cluster anchoring on NiFe-LDH (denoted as Ru c /NiFe-LDH), which effectively enhances the intermediate adsorption capacity of Ru by constructing Ru─O─Ni/Fe bridges. Notably, it achieves an industrial current density of 1 A cm −2 at an unprecedentedly low voltage of 0.43 V, saving 3.94 kWh m −3 H2 in energy, and exhibits remarkable stability over 120 h at a high current density of 5 A cm −2 . Advanced characterizations and theoretical calculation reveal that the presence of Ru─O─Ni/Fe bridges widens the d-band width (W d ) of the Ru cluster, leading to a lower d-band center and higher electron occupation on antibonding orbitals, thereby facilitating moderate adsorption energy and enhanced catalytic activity of Ru.

Jie Yang,Lixia Ma,Yuqi Zhang,Xuqian Zhao,Shouren Zhang,Luo Huang,Yunpeng Fang,Xiaojie Zhou,Jianghao Kang,Ruibin Jiang

The design of low-cost and highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is challengeable, which limits the commercial application of rechargeable zinc-air battery. Herein, an efficient ORR and OER bifunctional electrocatalyst (NiFe-LDH/F x −FeN 4 /C) is composed of nickel/iron-based heterostructures sparsely grown on carbon black (CB) with single FeN 4 sites. The NiFe-LDH/F x − FeN 4 /C electrocatalysts are prepared through the pyrolysis of hemin chloride adsorbed on CB, followed by in-situ hydrothermal growth of NiFe-LDH/F x heterostructures. The NiFe-LDH/F x heterostructures are composed of NiFe-LDH, (NH 4 ) 3 FeF 6 , and NiF 2 . The elevated valence states of Fe and Ni in heterostructures significantly increase the OER activity. The mesopores and large pores of the NiFe-LDH/F x − FeN 4 /C facilitate the exposure of active sites and enhance mass transfer. These features contribute to the outstanding bifunctional activity of NiFe-LDH/F x − FeN 4 /C, achieving a half-wave potential of 0.906 V for the ORR, an OER overpotential of 246 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , and an extremely small voltage gap of 0.57 V. Additionally, the NiFe-LDH/F x − FeN 4 /C-based RZAB also exhibits a peak power density of 209 mW cm −2 and charging/discharging cycling stability for 445 h. This work establishes a novel strategy for the preparation of highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts through in-situ growth and heterostructure engineering.

Boosting lattice oxygen reactivity via WO coordination and electronic structure modulation in NiFe-LDH electrocatalysts

Yawen Xu,Ye Li,Yizhi Du,Jinlong Zhang,Siyi Li,Chao Zhang,Xiaoli Ren,Zhiqiang Xu,Bing Xue,Fangfei Li

In this work, a W O bond-enriched NiFe layered double hydroxide composite (NiFe-LDH@NWT) was synthesized as a high-performance electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media. The incorporation of W O bonds effectively modulates the local electronic environment and surface charge distribution of the NiFe-LDH, thereby enhancing its intrinsic activity and interfacial reactivity. Electrochemical measurements reveal that NiFe-LDH@NWT delivers low overpotentials of 236 mV at current densities of 100 mA cm −2 , respectively, with a small Tafel slope of 33.53 mV dec −1 , indicating favorable reaction kinetics. In addition, the electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) reaches 7.82 mF cm −2 , confirming the increased density of accessible active sites upon W O bond integration. Notably, the catalyst maintains excellent operational stability for over 1000 h at a current density of 100 mA cm −2 . These findings highlight a promising strategy to tailor the physicochemical properties of LDH-based catalysts, providing valuable insights into the rational design of stable and efficient OER systems for water-splitting applications.

Multi-structured and ligand-modified NiFe LDH with self-optimization for efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Zi-Ye Liu,Jiu-Jiu Ge,Ji-Ming Hu

Nickel foam (NF) self-supported NiFe LDH electrodes have been widely studied for their excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance. However, the performance of electrodes synthesized via conventional electrodeposition or hydrothermal methods are still unsatisfactory owing to their insufficient specific surface area and suboptimal activity. In this study, we report NF-supported NiFe LDH electrodes directly derived from NF-supported-bimetallic MOF-74(NiFe). The as-prepared NiFe LDH exhibited a hierarchical structure and inherited the molecular level porosity of the MOF-74 precursor. The as-prepared electrode underwent self-optimization during the OER process, significantly increasing the electrochemical active surface area and providing numerous catalytic sites. In addition, the 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalate (DHTP) ligand released from MOF-74 during its dissociation chemically modified NiFe LDH. This ligand promoted the formation of Ni(III) and resisted Cl− corrosion. Thus, LDH-MOF74@NF outperformed almost all previously reported NiFe LDH@NF electrodes, exhibiting excellent OER performance and high durability in KOH and KOH/NaCl solutions with overpotentials of 244 mV and 254 mV at 100 mA cm−2, respectively.

Solvent-engineered crystalline-amorphous NiFe LDH electrocatalysts with industrial-grade stability for enhanced water oxidation

Huan Ye,Jinghan Zhang,Qiming Chen,Chuanshun Feng,Zhouyang Quan,Guoen Zhang,Xiaobin Fan,Jijie Zhang,Yang Li

Oxygen-vacancy-rich amorphous layered double hydroxides (LDHs) exhibit high oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity due to unsaturated ligand structures modulating the electronic states of active metals. However, high crystallinity ensures stability limits the development of such amorphous catalysts is prevailing consensus, and the fundamental understanding of constructing amorphous/crystalline coexisting LDHs as viable non-precious anode alternatives remains insufficient. Herein, a crystalline/amorphous coexisting NiFe LDH (a/c-NiFe LDH) electrocatalyst was synthesized at room temperature via a facile solvent adjustment strategy. Adding isopropanol modulates nucleation kinetics, tailors the catalyst’s morphology, and confers exceptional resistance to mechanical degradation during the oxygen evolution process. Crucially, solvent conditioning induces an interspersed amorphous structure within the crystalline LDH framework, regulating electron transfer pathways. Simultaneously, abundant oxygen vacancies optimize the electronic structure near unsaturated metal ligands, synergistically enhancing OER performance. Benefiting from these features, the a/c-NiFe LDH catalyst achieves a remarkably low Tafel slope of 29.6 mV dec −1 , surpassing that of commercial IrO 2 (80.5 mV dec −1 ) and exhibiting the lowest reconstruction potential. Furthermore, it demonstrates outstanding stability exceeding 130 h at an industrial-grade current density of 1 A cm −2 in an anion-exchange membrane water electrolyzer. This work provides a novel design of homologous crystalline/amorphous heterojunction OER electrodes and offers effective guidance for industrial applications.

Improving the Catalytic Efficiency of NiFe-LDH/ATO by Air Plasma Treatment for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Lei Chong,Li Wenzheng,Wang Gongwei,Zhuang Lin,Lu Juntao,Xiao Li

Developing efficient catalysts toward the oxygen evolution reaction(OER) is important for water splitting and rechargeable metal-air batteries. Although NiFe oxides are considered as potentially applicable catalysts in the alkaline media, there are still a limited numbers of researches working on membrane electrode assembly(MEA) fed with pure water due to their poor electrical conductivity. In this work, antimony doped tin oxide(ATO) has been employed as conductive supports where NiFe layered double hydroxide uniformly dispersed[named NiFe-LDH(layered double hydroxide)/ATO]. The catalysts have been synthesized by a one-step co-precipitation method, and then NiFe-LDH/ATO-air plasma was obtained through mild air plasma treatment. According to XPS analysis, binding energies of Ni 2 p and Fe 2 p were shifted negatively. Moreover, a new signal of low oxygen coordination appeared on O 1 s spectrum after air plasma treatment. These XPS results indicated that oxygen vacancies(O v ) were generated after air plasma treatment. Electrochemical measurement indicated that the vacancy-rich NiFe-LDH/ATO-air plasma exhibited better performance than NiFe-LDH/ATO not only in 1 mol/L KOH solutions but also in an alkaline polymer electrolyte water electrolyzer(APEWE) fed with deionized water. This work provides a feasible way to design practical catalysts used in electrochemical energy conversion systems by choosing corrosion resistance supports and defect engineering.

Nitrate intercalation suppresses Fe active-site dissolution in NiFe-LDH for durable industrial alkaline oxygen evolution

Zhang Yingzhen,Han Shibo,Huang Jianying,Cai Weilong,Ng Yun Hau,Chen I-Wen Peter,Lai Yuekun

The practical deployment of alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) is fundamentally limited by the instability of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts caused by continuous dissolution of active metal sites under harsh operating conditions. Herein, we report a strategy for stabilizing NiFe layered double hydroxides (NiFe-LDH) via weak Brönsted base intercalation, which tunes the interlayer spacing and interfacial electronic structure. Through the intercalation of weakly basic nitrate anions (NO 3 − ), a nitrate-modified NiFe-LDH (NiFe-NO 3 ) is constructed, which effectively suppresses Fe dissolution by stabilizing high-valence Ni/Fe species during operation. As a result, NiFe-NO 3 exhibits exceptional durability, maintaining stable operation at 1000 mA cm −2 in 30 wt% KOH at 80 °C for over 500 h with an ultralow degradation rate of 0.04 mV·h −1 (retention rate of electrochemical activity was 99.1%), representing a ∼12-fold lifetime improvement over pristine NiFe-LDH. Mechanistic studies reveal that NO 3 − intercalation induces synergistic effects including slight interlayer expansion, electronic redistribution, and regulation of interlayer Brönsted basicity, which collectively stabilize high-valence Ni/Fe species and preserve the oxyhydroxide active phase during OER. This work demonstrates that Brönsted base intercalation provides an effective strategy to suppress active-site dissolution and offers new insights for the design of durable OER catalysts for industrial alkaline water electrolysis (AWE).

NiFe-PBA seed-layer induced growth of NiFe-LDH nanosheets for efficient aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Yi Li,Yong Tang,Yujing Wang,Junyin Chen,Chun Huang,Jianwei Zhao,Lirong Qin

In this study, a single-crystalline NiFe-PBA film was first electrodeposited onto a nickel foam substrate, followed by a secondary electrodeposition step to grow NiFe-LDH nanosheets on the film. This composite structure facilitates electron transfer from NiFe-LDH to NiFe-PBA, thereby enhancing the electrical conductivity of the electrode material. Meanwhile, the high specific surface area of NiFe-LDH nanosheets provides more active sites. As a result, the fabricated aqueous zinc-ion battery achieves a specific capacity of 133.5 mAh/g at a current density of 0.3 A/g. In addition, the capacitance contribution of the NiFe-PBA electrode material was only 6%, while that of the NiFe-PBA@NiFe-LDH electrode material increased to 18% at a sweep rate of 10 mV/s. These findings demonstrate that the NiFe-PBA@NiFe-LDH composite is a promising cathode material for aqueous zinc-ion batteries, offering a novel strategy for the development of high-performance cathodes in this field.

Alkaline water electrolysis offers a promising route for large-scale hydrogen production, but its efficiency is limited by the sluggish kinetics of both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we designed a hierarchical composite electrocatalyst comprising iridium-doped nickel-cobalt phosphide nanoparticles (Ir-NiCoP/Ni5P4) encapsulated within nickel-iron layered double hydroxide nanosheets (NiFe-LDH). Oxygen vacancies (OV) were engineered on the surface via sodium borohydride reduction, yielding an optimized catalyst denoted as Ir-NiCoP/Ni5P4@NiFe-LDH-1-OV. The optimized catalyst delivers low overpotentials of 52.7 mV for HER and 197.3 mV for OER at 10 mA cm-2 and maintains remarkable stability over 100 h for overall water splitting. Moreover, the Ir-NiCoP/Ni5P4@NiFe-LDH catalyst exhibits overpotentials of 76.7 and 101.3 mV for HER and the ammonia oxidation reaction A in 1 M KOH + NH3·H2O, respectively.

Enhancing charge transfer in NiFe-LDH anodes via Ti4O7 integration for high-performance alkaline water electrolysis

Qingqing Ye,Jiahao Wang,Feifei Fang,Yinglong Yu,Jun Man,Yufeng Qin,Yanfei Wang,Meiling Dou,Feng Wang

Exploring efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is critical for improving the performance of alkaline water electrolyzers (AWEs). Nickel–iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) is regarded as a promising candidate but suffers from intrinsically low electrical conductivity that restricts charge transfer during OER catalysis. Herein, we present a facile and scalable strategy to fabricate a NiFe-LDH/Ti4O7 composite OER catalyst by integrating highly conductive Magnéli-phase Ti4O7 with NiFe-LDH, serving as the anode of AWE. The resulting composite preserves the flower-like morphology of pristine NiFe-LDH while achieving a high electrical conductivity of 0.81 S cm−1. Electronic structure analysis shows that the work function difference between NiFe-LDH and Ti4O7 generates a built-in electric field at the heterointerface, driving electron transfer from NiFe-LDH to Ti4O7, which induces band gap narrowing for NiFe-LDH/Ti4O7, thereby accelerating charge transport and thus boosting OER kinetics. The optimal composite displays a high OER activity with an overpotential of 262 mV at 10 mA cm−2, outperforming pure NiFe-LDH (290 mV). When directly spray-coated onto a Zirfon membrane to form the catalyst-coated membrane (CCM), the assembled AWE operates a cell voltage of 1.66 V at a current density of 0.5 A cm−2, which is 40 mV lower than that of pure NiFe-LDH (1.70 V), and maintains stable performance for over 351 h. This work demonstrates that the integration with conductive Ti4O7 facilitates charge transfer in NiFe-LDH-based anodes, providing a strategy for the fabrication of high-performance electrodes for AWE application.

A polydopamine interlayer enables dual stabilization of NiFe-LDH for electrochemically and mechanically robust water electrolysis

Ziming Cao,Ziyan Fu,Haoyu Yin,Yunpeng Zhou,Gaoyu Wei,Xiaodong Shi,Xiao Zhang,Shun Ao,Zhongbiao Wu,Le Shi

Polydopamine (PDA)-assisted strategy develops a S-NiFe@PDA electrocatalyst with enhanced durability and activity. • PDA achieves a more stable and efficient LOM pathway and suppresses catalyst detachment under high current densities. • S-NiFe@PDA requires overpotential of only 367 mV to achieve 1.0 A cm −2 and exhibited outstanding resilience in an ADT. • S-NiFe@PDA enables stable operation at 1.0 A cm −2 for over 2100 h at room temperature in an AEMWE. Nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) electrocatalysts have emerged as promising alternatives to precious-metal materials in alkaline water electrolysis (AWE), offering structural tunability and cost-effectiveness for a decarbonized economy. However, achieving both high activity and stability under industrially relevant conditions remains a critical challenge. In this study, we developed a polydopamine (PDA)-assisted strategy to construct an interlayer between the catalyst and substrate, resulting in a robust NiFe-based electrocatalyst (S-NiFe@PDA) with enhanced durability and activity. The PDA interlayer promotes the formation of lattice oxygen vacancies with strengthened metal-oxygen bonds and highly active Ni species, facilitating a more stable and efficient lattice oxygen-mediated mechanism (LOM) pathway. Moreover, the strong adhesion and interfacial interaction provided by the PDA interlayer effectively suppress catalyst detachment under high current densities, substantially enhancing long-term durability. The optimized S-NiFe@PDA electrode required overpotential of only 367 mV to achieve current density of 1.0 A cm −2 and exhibited outstanding resilience in an accelerated durability test (ADT), with only an 8.55% increase in overpotential after 3000 cycles, demonstrating its suitability under intermittent renewable energy inputs. When integrated into an anion-exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE), the S-NiFe@PDA enabled stable operation at 1.0 A cm −2 for over 2100 h at room temperature. This work offers valuable insights into the design of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts with both high activity and industrial durability, facilitating the development of efficient water electrolysis systems. Pinning effect of lattice co enhances lattice oxygen regeneration in NiFe-LDH for oxygen evolution reaction

Xianshu Qiao,Qishuang Zhu,Guangyao Hou,Zewei Pang,Hongjun Kang

NiFe-based catalysts are widely recognized as the optimal binary-metal-based catalyst for the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water electrolysis. However, simultaneously improving the OER activity and stability of NiFe-based catalysts remains a challenge because the rapid lattice oxygen consumption of the NiFe-based catalysts leads to irrepressible Ni and Fe leaching and structural collapse. Herein, we report that lattice Co acts as a doping source to induce a pinning effect, effectively promoting lattice oxygen regeneration in NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) and thereby simultaneously improving its activity and stability. The Co-doped NiFe-LDH (Co-NiFe-LDH) exhibits high OER performance with a low overpotential of 195 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and maintains stable operation over 500 h at 50 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH. Experimental and theoretical studies show that introducing Co atoms into the NiFe-LDH catalyst reduces Ni O covalency due to enhanced electron localization between Ni 3d and O 2p orbitals. This electronic modulation simultaneously decreases the adsorption energy of OH/O species and the conversion energy from *OH to *O, thereby enhancing the lattice oxygen regeneration, which dynamically improves the O O coupling processes and maintains the structural stability of NiFe-LDH.
