Efficient depolymerization of sodium lignosulfonate assisted by sulfur migration

Xiaoyu Lin,Wenbin Ding,Gaojie Shi,Bochao Yan,Suping Zhang

Lignosulfonate (LS), as the most abundant technical lignin, is hard to depolymerize due to highly condensed structure. To overcome the limitation, in this work, NiMoO 4 /Al 2 O 3 catalyst with regulated acidity/hydrogenation activity was developed for highly efficient LS depolymerization . Results show that the performance of NiMoO 4 /Al 2 O 3 was improved by sulfur migration. Meanwhile Ni Mo alloy contributed to the good stability during LS depolymerization . The NiMoO 4 /Al 2 O 3 was favor for the intermediate compounds production by the cleavage of C O and C C bonds, which intermediate compounds were eventually hydrogenated to monomers by highly active MoS 2 . Also, NiMoO 4 /Al 2 O 3 and sulfonic groups play a synergistic role in the sulfur migration (only 39.1% bio-oil yield obtained by MoS 2 /Al 2 O 3 ). After reacting at 300 °C for 4 h, 81.7% of bio-oil yield with 95% desulfurization rate were obtained. Thus, it was demonstrated that an inexpensive catalyst was developed which can efficiently catalyze the depolymerization of lignosulfonate.

Superhydrophilic carbon-modified NiMoO4 for highly efficient overall water splitting

Yaqi Guo,Weiling Fan,Yuanyuan Li,Yang Zhu,Shanshan Li,Xing Gao,Ailing Fan

The development of affordable and efficient alternatives to precious metal-based electrocatalysts remains a key challenge for water electrolysis. In this study, carbon-modified NiMoO 4 /NF nanorods were prepared via a hydrothermal method combined with low-temperature vacuum carbonization. In 1 M KOH, the catalyst exhibits overpotentials of 34 mV and 142 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), 161 mV and 364 mV for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at 10 and 50 mA cm −2 , respectively. Moreover, the catalyst requires low overall water splitting (OWS) potential of 1.53 V to achieve 10 mA cm −2 . Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that carbon incorporation reduces water adsorption energy, optimizes the adsorption of H* intermediates on Mo sites, and enhances the synergistic interaction between Ni and Mo elements. This work demonstrates that low-temperature carbonization offers a viable route for fabricating a carbon-modified bifunctional electrocatalyst.

Hierarchical Heterojunction NiMoO4/MnS Nanoarrays for High-Performance Asymmetric Supercapacitors

Yang Yang,Huiting Rao,Yuwen Ma,Chao Sun,Chaomeng Bu,Xianfu Li

In this paper, the successful fabrication of NiMoO4/MnS composite electrodes was in situ growth on nickel foam (NF) substrates via a two-step hydrothermal methods. The in situ growth strategy effectively maintains integrity of the structure while eliminating interfacial contact resistance, significantly enhancing the material’s electrical conductivity. This structural design strategically integrates the high theoretically capacitance of NiMoO4 with the superior conductive properties of MnS, creating abundant electrochemical active sites and synergistic effects. Consequently, the NiMoO4/MnS/NF electrode achieves a remarkable 9225.6 mF cm–2 areal capacitance at a current density of 4 mA cm–2, significantly surpassing the performances of individual NiMoO4/NF (2667.6 mF cm–2) and MnS/NF (492.8 mF cm–2) electrodes. Furthermore, the assembled asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device delivers a high energy density of 0.26 mWh cm–2 at a power density of 3 mW cm–2. This study not only provides an innovative design concept for constructing heterogeneous transition metal composite materials but also establishes a scalable application foundation for developing future high-efficiency energy storage technologies.

Chengxiang Huang,Xinhang Li,Zhou Jiang,Detian Meng,Yanni Wang,Meiqi Liu,Xinyan Zhou,Fuxi Liu,Boning Xu,Xu Zou,Wei Zhang,Weitao Zheng

Binary transition metal oxides (BTMOs) stand out as a focal point due to their distinctive electrochemical properties. However, they encounter challenges like low conductivity and limited active sites. To tackle these obstacles, we have meticulously designed a CoMoO 4 -NiMoO 4 (CMNM) heterostructure featuring significant compressive-tensile strain. This design facilitates the robust integration of CoMoO 4 (CM) and NiMoO 4 (NM), initiating interfacial polarization, and establishing a built-in electric field (BIEF) that significantly enhances electron transfer between the phases. Moreover, the strain serves as a driving force for the electric field, promoting the rearrangement of interface electrons and further boosting interfacial polarization. This avant-garde approach propels the CMNM electrode to achieve a remarkable specific capacity of 530.45 C g −1 at 1 A g −1 , maintaining 327 C g −1 even at 10 A g −1 , thus showcasing a superior rate capability. Furthermore, an asymmetric supercapacitor employing CMNM as the positive and FeOOH as the negative achieves a high energy density of 78.9 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 927.02 W kg −1 . Our methodology, leveraging heterostructures coupled with the interfacial strain tactics, paves a novel avenue for high-performance supercapacitors.

Hierarchically heterostructured metal hydr(oxy)oxides for efficient overall water splitting

Yang Liu,Fengmei Wang,Tofik Ahmed Shifa,Jie Li,Jing Tai,Yu Zhang,Junwei Chu,Xueying Zhan,Chongxin Shan,Jun He

The design of highly efficient electrocatalysts containing non-precious metals is crucial for promoting overall water splitting in alkaline media. In particular, Janus catalysts simultaneously facilitating the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are desirable. Herein, we fabricated a unique hierarchical heterostructure via growing Ni4W6O21(OH)2·4H2O (denoted as Ni–W–O) nanosheets on NiMoO4 rods, which was indispensable for regulating the morphology of the Ni–W–O structure. This heterostructure of Ni–W–O/NiMoO4 could be utilized as an electrocatalyst to realize superior activity for overall water splitting in 1.0 M KOH. It substantially promoted overall water splitting with 1.6 V at 30 mA cm−2, outperforming numerous bifunctional electrocatalysts under the same conditions. Notably, the remarkable stability for continuously splitting water endowed this hierarchical heterostructure with potential applications on a large scale. This work emphasizes the effectively controlled growth of heterostructured non-noble-metal catalysts for energy-conversion reaction.

Carbon-supported Ni and MoO2 nanoparticles with Fe3O4 cores as a protein adsorbent

Lina Zhang,Min Zhang,Libin Liu,Yanqin Wang,Jing Zheng,Jingli Xu

Decoration of transition metal Ni nanoparticles (NPs) on magnetic supports is of special interest for histine-rich protein adsorption. Through a combination of a hydrothermal reaction, a mussel-inspired coating and a carbonization strategy, we have investigated two synthetic paths to access hierarchical nickel-based magnetic nanostructures: (1) Fe3O4 spheres are covered with hierarchical NiMoO4 nanosheets and subsequently coated with a polydopamine (PDA) layer, and Fe3O4@MoO2∩C–Ni composites are synthesized after pyrolysis in a nitrogen atmosphere, and (2) Fe3O4 spheres are coated with PDA and subsequently covered with hierarchical NiMoO4 nanosheets, and then Fe3O4@C∩MoO2–Ni composites are obtained after pyrolysis in a nitrogen atmosphere. We find that only route 1, which can be defined as a space-confined carbonization strategy, results in the formation of a high coverage of nickel NPs with tiny diameter decorated on Fe3O4 spheres. Route 2, defined as a non-space-confined carbonization strategy, leads to the formation of low density and large size Ni NPs. Detailed examination of the nickel-based magnetic composites obtained by route 1 displayed superior adsorption capacity for BHb than that of route 2. The results demonstrated that the space-confined strategy is greatly beneficial for the synthesis of Ni-based magnetic composites with high coverage, which would pave a novel way for synthesizing high density Ni-based magnetic composites.

Hierarchical Co3O4@NiMoO4 core-shell nanowires for chemiresistive sensing of xylene vapor

Qu Fengdong,Zhang Shendan,Zhang Bingxue,Zhou Xinxin,Du Shiyu,Lin Cheng-Te,Ruan Shengping,Yang Minghui

Hierarchical Co 3 O 4 @NiMoO 4 core-shell nanowires (NWs) were synthesized utilizing a two-step hydrothermal method. The NWs show a high chemiresistive response (at a temperature of 255 °C) to xylene, with an R gas /R air ratio of 24.6 at 100 ppm xylene, while the response towards toluene, benzene, ethanol, and acetone, CO, H 2 S and NO 2 is much weaker. In contrast, pure Co 3 O 4 nanowires exhibit weak responses to all the vapors/gases and poor selectivity. The new NW sensor displays an almost linear response (1–100 ppm) to xylene and a lower detection limit of 424 ppb. The remarkable gas sensing characteristics are attributed to the synergistic catalytic effect and the formation of a heterostructure between Co 3 O 4 and NiMoO 4 . Schematic presentation of a xylene vapor chemiresistive sensor based on Co3O4@NiMoO4 core-shell nanowires. The Co3O4@NiMoO4 core-shell nanowires-based sensor exhibits a high response (24.6) to 100 ppm xylene at 255 °C and high response/recovery speed (13–15 and 25–29 s).

Dual-strategy modification of NiMoO4 yields high performance bifunctional water splitting catalysts

Shanshan Ye,Shuangxian Wu,Lihan Wen,Hao Chen,Juan Shen,Bo Jin

Nickel molybdate is considered a promising alternative to noble-metal catalysts for water splitting because its microstructure and electronic structure can be readily tuned. However, its inherent low catalytic activity limits the OER and HER performance and stability of the catalyst. This work employs a simple one step hydrothermal method to synthesize iron-doped nickel molybdate (FNMO) on a self-assembled Ti 3 C 2 /NF substrate, followed by phosphorating treatment with PH 3 gas to obtain the phosphorated product Pi/FNMO/Ti 3 C 2 /NF nanorod array catalyst. The Pi/FNMO/Ti 3 C 2 /NF catalyst exhibits superior oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity (189.8 mV @ 10 mA cm⁻ 2 , 329.8 mV @ 100 mA cm⁻ 2 ) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity (73 mV @ 10 mA cm⁻ 2 ), significantly surpassing commercial RuO 2 and Pt/C catalysts. This may be attributed to the formation of a heterojunction between FNMO and Ti 3 C 2 within the Pi/FNMO/Ti 3 C 2 /NF composite following phosphorylation, which modulates the electronic structure and reduces the overpotentials for both the OER and HER. Meanwhile, as a bifunctional catalyst, Pi/FNMO/Ti 3 C 2 /NF requires only 1.57 V to drive overall water splitting at a current density of 100 mA cm −2 and maintain stable output for 180 h with a decay rate of only 5.5%. This work demonstrates the feasibility of enhancing overall water splitting performance through the incorporation of heteroatom doping and phosphorylation modification in nickel molybdate-MXene composites, providing a useful strategy for the design of high-performance NiMoO 4 -MXene electrocatalysts for alkaline water splitting.

Synergistic Effect of NiMoO4 Nanorods with Polyaniline for Efficient Electrochemical Water Splitting

Adel Al-Salihy,Qiancheng Zhu,Jing Hu,Ce Liang,Ahmed Bahgat Radwan,Abdulwahab Salah,Ping Xu

Electrochemical water splitting has emerged as a promising solution for sustainable hydrogen production, but the development of efficient, durable, and cost-effective bifunctional electrocatalysts remains a critical challenge. In this work, we report the novel fabrication of composite materials consisting of nickel molybdate (NiMoO4) coated with polyaniline (PANI). NiMoO4 nanorods were initially synthesized on nickel foam (NF) using a hydrothermal technique and subsequently coated with PANI via UV-assisted polymerization. The resulting NiMoO4@PANI nanostructures demonstrate increased active sites for improved efficiency in electron transfer and catalytic activity. This combination enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance, achieving reduced overpotential values of 88 and 167 mV for HER and OER at 10 mA cm–2, respectively. Comprehensive electrochemical evaluations, including Tafel slope, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and electrochemical double-layer capacitance (Cdl) measurements, validate the enhancements in kinetics and charge transfer facilitated by the PANI coating. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations offer further insights into the improved catalytic efficiency, showing reduced barrier for water splitting (ΔGb = 0.45 eV), nearly negligible hydrogen adsorption energy (ΔG*H = 0.08 eV), appropriate adsorption energy of oxygen evolution (ΔG*OOH – ΔG*OH = 2.58 eV), and high density of states close to the Fermi level. The NiMoO4@PANI nanostructures exhibit excellent stability for 310 h without interruption, suggesting the potential for sustainable hydrogen production.

High-valence metal sites induced by heterostructure engineering for promoting 5-hydroxymethylfurfural electrooxidation and hydrogen generation

Ningzhao Shang,Wenjiong Li,Qingyao Wu,Huafan Li,Hongchao Wang,Chun Wang,Guoyi Bai

The electrocatalytic 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) oxidation reaction coupling with hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) serves as a promising strategy to generate both high-value-added products and clean energy, which is limited by the poor catalytic efficiency of bifunctional electrocatalysts and unclear electrocatalytic mechanism for HMF oxidation reaction. Herein, we fabricate a bifunctional NiSe 2 -NiMoO 4 heterostructure nanowire electrocatalyst for the conversion of HMF to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) and simultaneous H 2 production. As expected, the NiSe 2 -NiMoO 4 exhibits outstanding activity and selectivity toward HMF oxidation reaction. In particular, at a potential of 1.50 V, the yield of FDCA could reach 98 % with a faradaic efficiency of 96.5 %, as well as excellent stability. Density functional theory calculation results demonstrate that the NiSe 2 -NiMoO 4 heterostructure could tune the adsorption energy of HMF, facilitate high-valence active species formation, and enhance electronic conductivity. Furthermore, a two-electrode electrolyzer assembled using NiSe 2 -NiMoO 4 as a bifunctional catalyst requires 1.53 V to acquire a current density of 50 mA cm −2 , which is 201 mV lower than that of water electrolysis. This work provides new insights for designing multifunctional catalysts for biomass upgrading coupled with hydrogen evolution.

Self-supported MXene/NiMoO4 as efficient and stable electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction

Xuejiao Sun,Xiang Ji,Xiaoxuan Zhang,Dongmei Li,Zhongzhen Tian

a MXene/NiMoO 4 /NF composite electrode was successfully prepared by synthesizing nanoneedle NiMoO 4 on nickel foam (NF) via a hydrothermal method, followed by spray-coating with a MXene dispersion. The formed three-dimensional porous network provided a hierarchical catalytic interface with abundant active sites. Electrochemical tests demonstrated outstanding oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity with overpotentials of 153 mV and 241 mV at 10 and 50 mA cm −2 , respectively. The Tafel slope of 38 mV dec −1 indicated rapid reaction kinetics, with the enhanced performance attributed to the synergistic effect between MXene and NiMoO 4 and the hierarchical interface structure.
