Synthesis of Au-NiOx/ultrathin graphitic C3N4 nanocomposite for electrochemical non-platinum oxidation of methanol

Han Sun,Haiping Huang,Chao Hu,Yu Yan,Yongmei Hu,Sui-Jun Liu,He-Rui Wen

The Au-NiO x /g-C 3 N 4 (graphitic C 3 N 4 ) nanocomposite is synthesized and utilized as catalyst for the electrochemical oxidation of methanol in the alkaline electrolyte . Au and Ni nanoparticles are uniformly dispersed on ultrathin g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets by in-situ synthesis with nickel nitrate and chloroauric acid as Ni and Au resource respectively. The structure, morphology and component of the prepared nanocomposites are characterized by different techniques like transmission electron microscopy , X-ray diffraction, elemental mapping image and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results prove that the nanoparticles are well-distributed and embedded in g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets. The electrochemical performance of different nanocomposite for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) is tested under alkaline conditions via electrochemical technologies. Compared to the pure g-C 3 N 4 and Au/g-C 3 N 4 , the NiO x /g-C 3 N 4 exhibits electrochemical catalytic effect toward methanol electro-oxidation with the existence of Ni. This electrochemical catalytic performance is enhanced significantly for the Au-NiO x /g-C 3 N 4 , whose oxidation peak current density is 2.32 times higher than NiO x /g-C 3 N 4 . The slope value drew from the Tafel plots shows that the Au-NiO x /g-C 3 N 4 owns the lowest Tafel slope (67.00 mV/dec). After the 7200 s stability test, the Au-NiO x /g-C 3 N 4 catalyst can still maintain a high current density . Long-term stability and good anti-poisoning ability promise Au-NiO x /g-C 3 N 4 a competitive non-Pt catalyst for the methanol oxidation.

Interfacial engineering of sputtered NiOx for enhancing efficiency and stability of inverted perovskite solar cells

Wei Zhang,Honglie Shen,Pingyuan Yan,Jingzhe Zhang

The quality of the interface between the nickel oxide (NiO x ) and the perovskite contact is essential to the efficiency and stability of the device. How to effectively suppress the reaction at the interface between NiO x and perovskite is the key to improve the interface quality. Herein, a simple and scalable interface enhancement strategy for building efficient and stable perovskite solar cells (PSCs) using 4-aminobenzoic acid (ABA) molecules to modify the sputtered NiO x surface as the hole transport layers (HTLs). Meanwhile, ABA molecules not only reduce the defect density and improve the quality of perovskite films (PVK), but also improve the carrier extraction ability of NiO x and reduce interfacial non-radiative recombination. Eventually, the optimized inverted device efficiency is increased to 19.1%, and the device stability is significantly improved under unencapsulated atmospheric conditions. This provides a reference for the commercial development of PSCs.

NiOx for interface and work function engineering in carbon-based all-inorganic perovskite solar cells

Bingjie Xu,Dongmei Liu,Chen Dong,Muhammad Awais,Wanlong Wang,Yuhao Song,Yingying Deng,Miaosen Yao,Junjie Tong,Gentian Yue,Weifeng Zhang,Furui Tan,Makhsud I. Saidaminov

Carbon-based all-inorganic perovskite solar cells (C-IPSCs) are stable, upscalable and have low CO 2 -footprint to fabricate. However, they are inefficient in converting light to electricity due to poor hole extraction at perovskite/carbon interface. Here we enable an efficient hole extraction in C-IPSCs with the aid of inorganic p-type nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiO x -NPs) at the interface and in carbon. By tailoring the work function (WF) of carbon, and reducing the energy-level misalignment at the perovskite/carbon interface, NiO x -NPs enable efficient hole transfer, reduce charge recombination and minimize energy loss. As a result, we report 15.01% and 11.02% efficiencies for CsPbI 2 Br and CsPbIBr 2 C-IPSCs, respectively, with a high open-circuit voltage of ∼1.3 V. Unencapsulated interface-modified CsPbI 2 Br devices maintained 92.8% of their initial efficiency at ambient conditions after nearly 2,000 h; and 94.6% after heating at 60 °C for 170 h. This strategy to tailor carbon interface with perovskite offers an important knob in improving C-IPSCs performance.

Tuning Hole Accumulation of Metal Oxides Promotes the Oxygen Evolution Rate

Peikun Zhang,Wei Wang,Hui Wang,Yanbo Li,Chunhua Cui

Although much is known about the increased rate of a catalyst required for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the hole accumulation behaviors of the catalyst on both photo- and dark electrodes remain uncovered. We present a rational tuning of the hole-accumulation and hole-transfer ability of a catalyst by in situ deposition of IrOx on NiOx islands on model Si electrodes and we demonstrate a distinct hole accumulation behavior during the OER through electrochemical methods, in situ UV–vis and Raman spectroelectrochemistry. We find that the NiOx islands with <10% coverage on an n++-Si dark electrode demonstrate a 6-fold higher capacity of hole accumulation relative to that on an n-Si photoanode under illumination. A further in situ targeted deposition of soluble hexahydroxyiridate on the NiOx leads to the formation of NiOx/IrOx junctions, where the IrOx further depletes the extracted holes by NiOx from the n-Si photoanode decreasing the overpotential by ∼260 mV at 20 mA cm–2, yet the IrOx promotes the hole accumulation at the NiOx/IrOx on the dark electrodes presenting a similar decrease of the overpotential. In contrast to the dark-holes, an extremely lower charging level of photogenerated holes of the same catalyst at the identical current density reasoned a seemingly higher reactivity to drive the OER, and reasonably demonstrated a stronger oxidation/corrosion to the Si electrode.

How to Construct Efficient Planar Inverted Aqueous-Based Perovskite Solar Cells Using NiOx Hole Transport Layers?

Zhongjun Dai,Xiaofeng He,Zezhuan Jiang,Haimao Zhu,Han Jiang,Qianqian Zhang,Zirui Peng,Yu Tan,Ahmed Mourtada Elseman,Qunliang Song

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) fabricated by using conventional organic solvents face severe toxicity and environmental challenges. Aqueous processing will offer a promising green alternative. The regular aqueous-based PSCs (A-PSCs) have demonstrated photovoltaic performance comparable to that of their organic solvent-based counterparts. Nevertheless, the planar inverted A-PSCs (PIA–PSCs) exhibit substantially inferior performance or even failure when using nickel oxide (NiOx) as a hole transport layer. One of the reasons is that the “island-like” growth of lead nitrate (Pb(NO3)2) crystals on the NiOx substrates is due to their mismatched physicochemical properties, which ultimately results in a perovskite film with a discontinuous morphology. Thus, we investigate the influence of temperature-modulated (TeMo) NiOx substrates on Pb(NO3)2 crystallization and reveal that the surface free energy and surface potential distribution of substrates critically govern precursor solution wettability and crystallization kinetics. Through TeMo, high-quality aqueous-based Pb(NO3)2 precursor films and then perovskite films were finally achieved. The satisfactory PIA–PSC achieved a champion efficiency of 18.34%, which is among the highest reported for PIA–PSCs. Besides, unencapsulated devices also demonstrated excellent thermal and environmental stability. This work provides a novel and practical approach to develop high-performance, eco-friendly planar inverted aqueous-based PSCs.

Controlled NiOx Defect Engineering to Harnessing Redox Reactions in Perovskite Photovoltaic Cells via Atomic Layer Deposition

Xuteng Yu,Chang Liu,Chi Li,Can Wang,Yuheng Li,Lusheng Liang,Wei Yu,Yao Wang,Chunming Liu,Yanrui Liu,Gaoyuan Yang,Wanqiang Fu,Qin Zhou,Shui-Yang Lien,Yunyu Wang,Peng Gao

Albeit the undesirable attributes of NiOx, such as low conductivity, unmanageable defects, and redox reactions occurring at the perovskite/NiOx interface, which impede the progress in inverted perovskite solar cells (i-PSCs), it is the most favorable choice of technology for industrialization of PSCs. In this study, we propose a novel Ni vacancy defect modulate approach to leverage the conformal growth and surface self-limiting reaction characteristics of the atomic layer deposition (ALD)-fabricated NiOx by varying the O2 plasma injection time (tOE) to induce self-doping. Consequently, NiOx thin films with enhanced conductivity, an appropriate Ni3+/Ni2+ ratio, stable surface states, and ultrathinness are realized as hole-transporting layers (HTLs) in p-i-n PSCs. As a result of these improvements, ALD-NiOx-based devices exhibit the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.86% and a fill factor (FF) of 81.86%. Notably, the optimal interfacial defects effectively suppressed the severe reaction between the perovskite and NiOx. This suppression is evidenced by the lowest decay rate observed in a harsh environment, lasting for 500 consecutive hours. The proposed approach introduces the possibility of a hierarchical distribution of defects and offers feasibility for the fabrication of large-area, uniform, and high-quality films.

Manipulation of Ion Migration in Inverted Perovskite Solar Cell with Rubidium-Doped NiOx Hole Transport Layer

Jingyuan Zheng,Junyu Nie,Zhirui Chen,Cheng Mu,Yi Wang

Ion migration is considered a dominant factor responsible for the poor stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Alkali metal doping into the hole transport layer (HTL) has emerged as an effective strategy for regulating ion migration, yet the detailed landscape in PSC devices is still poorly clarified. Here, we systematically investigate the influence of Rb+ doping in NiOx HTLs on ion migration in inverted PSCs using a custom-built circuit-switched transient photoelectric technique (cs-TPT). By decoupling the electronic and ionic contributions to photovoltage output, we provide direct evidence that ion migration can be effectively suppressed with increasing Rb+ concentration. Combining the well-established band alignment regulation of Rb+ doping and the model of polarization-induced trap states, we attribute this suppression to a reduced driving force for ion accumulation at the perovskite/HTL interface. More importantly, the suppressed ion migration occurs independently of the photovoltaic performance, which remains largely unchanged across all tested devices, providing a mechanistic framework for understanding ion migration in inverted PSCs.

ALD-Deposited Hydroxyl-Rich NiOx to Enhance SAM Anchoring for Stable and Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells

Fengming Guo,Xuteng Yu,Yuheng Li,Yong Chen,Chi Li,Chunming Liu,Peng Gao

The interface between nickel oxide (NiOx) and self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) often suffers from limited adsorption strength, poor energy-level alignment, and inadequate defect passivation, which hinder device performance and stability. To address these issues, we introduce a hybrid hole selective layer (HSL) combining atomic layer deposition (ALD)-fabricated NiOxwith full-aromatic SAM molecules, creating a highly stable and efficient interface. ALD NiOx, enriched with hydroxyl groups, provides robust adsorption sites for the SAM molecule MeO-PhPACz, ensuring a strong, stable interaction. This hybrid HSL enhances energy-level alignment, hole selectivity, and defect passivation at the NiOx/perovskite interface. Devices utilizing this approach demonstrate significant performance improvements, achieving a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 21.74%, with reduced voltage losses and minimal hysteresis. Furthermore, operational stability tests reveal enhanced durability under elevated humidity and temperature conditions. These findings highlight the potential of ALD NiOxand SAM hybrid HSL to overcome existing barriers, advancing the commercial viability of PSC technologies.

Efficient Inverted Planar Perovskite Solar Cells Using Ultraviolet/Ozone-Treated NiOx as the Hole Transport Layer

Tun Wang,Dong Ding,Hao Zheng,Xin Wang,Jiayuan Wang,Hong Liu,Wenzhong Shen

Nickel oxide (NiO x ) has exhibited great potential as a hole transport layer (HTL) for fabricating efficient and stable perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, it has been greatly limited by its fabrication and manipulation process. In this work, a simple processing method on an ultrathin electrochemical mesoporous NiO x film manipulated by controllable ultraviolet/ozone (UVO) treatmentis employed; the duration of UVO treatment on the NiO x film significantly affects the photovoltaic properties of the PSCs. When the exposure duration increases, the wettability, electrical conductivity, nonstoichiometry, and valence band energy of the NiO x film are improved with varying degrees. Besides, the perovskite grain size, recombination resistance at the perovskite/NiO x interface, and build-in potential of the device also increase, resulting in higher short-circuit current density ( J SC ) and open-circuit voltage ( V OC ). Combining these factors together, an optimal exposure time of UVO treatment on the NiO x film has been achieved at 5 min, which results in a significantly high performance with an efficiency of 19.67%, large V OC (>1.1 V), and J SC (>23 mA cm −2 ). Furthermore, the experimental results are coincide well with simulation results on the different corresponding subjects. Hopefully, this work could facilitate material manipulation toward scalable, high efficiency, and stable solar cells.

Solution-processed Sr-doped NiOx as hole transport layer for efficient and stable perovskite solar cells

Jiankai Zhang,Wujian Mao,Xian Hou,Jiaji Duan,Jianping Zhou,Sumei Huang,Wei Ou-Yang,Xuehua Zhang,Zhuo Sun,Xiaohong Chen

Nickel oxide (NiO x ) hole transport layer (HTL)-based planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted much attention due to high power conversion efficiency (PCE) and simple processing. In this work, smooth and compact Sr-doped NiO x films with different Sr doping concentration were successfully prepared through a simple low temperature sol-gel method. The 1 at.% Sr-doped NiO x HTL-based PSCs exhibited the best performance with PCE of 20.07%, which is greatly higher than PCE of reference NiO x based PSCs (15.73%). Furthermore, the unencapsulated PSCs based on Sr:NiO x HTL still retains over 60% of the original PCE value aging for 100 days under ambient air, showing better stability. The superior performance of Sr-doped NiO x based PSCs is attributed to better electrical conductivity, crystallinity of perovskite film and energy level matching with perovskite layer, which can greatly improve hole transport and extraction abilities and reduce carrier recombination, resulting in high PCE and better stability.

Revealing the unexpected interfacial promotion effect of Cu3P on NiOx/black phosphorus for (photo-)electrocatalytic urea oxidation

Man Zhao,Zimei Fu,Wei Wen,Yuhong Chang,Wenxiang Wang,Meng Bai,Xiaoli Li,Li Zhang,Junming Zhang,He Xiao,Jianfeng Jia

Up to now, nickel-based materials have been considered as the most promising catalysts for urea oxidation reaction (UOR). However, the inevitable self-oxidation from Ni 2+ to Ni 3+ severely limited their activity during UOR. To trigger the UOR occurred before self-oxidation of Ni species by altering reaction pathways, here synergistic dual-site of Cu 3 P-NiO x on black phosphorus (BP) nanosheets is constructed by a facile self-designed electrosynthesis method, where exfoliation of bulky BP into nanosheets and formation of multivalent Ni or Cu precursor are both obtained during electrosynthesis process. The best Cu 3 P-NiO x /BP shows the potential of 1.378 V under light irradiation at 10 mA cm −2 (without IR compensation), 187 mV lower than that in oxygen evolution reaction. This UOR activity of Cu 3 P-NiO x /BP is superior to Cu 3 P/BP or NiO x /BP, which is attributed to synergistic dual-site constructure of Cu 3 P-NiO x . In-situ and ex-situ characterizations suggest that in-situ generated Cu 3 P promotes adsorption and activation of urea molecules, and takes synergistic effect with NiO x , which makes urea oxidation undergoes a direct complete oxidation process. Moreover, with application of light illumination, excited photoelectrocatalytic effect by Cu 3 P further greatly enhances the activity for UOR. This study provides insights to the designing principles for optimizing reaction pathways toward small nucleophile molecule oxidation and effective strategies to develop efficient UOR photoelectrocatalysts.

Cation-size mismatch and interface stabilization for efficient NiOx-based inverted perovskite solar cells with 21.9% efficiency

Yousheng Wang,Hui Ju,Tahmineh Mahmoudi,Chong Liu,Cuiling Zhang,Shaohang Wu,Yuzhao Yang,Zhen Wang,Jinlong Hu,Ye Cao,Fei Guo,Yoon-Bong Hahn,Yaohua Mai

Stabilization of perovskite phases and interfaces in stacked perovskite photovoltaics are critical for their efficiency, operational stability and perovskite solar modules (PSMs). Herein, A-site cation-size mismatch processed perovskite-composition films with less crystal defects are formed by incorporating larger cations formamidinium and methylammonium with smaller cations, i.e., potassium and cesium . The interface stabilization can be achieved by inserting Poly[bis(4-phenyl) (2,4,6-trimethylphenyl) amine], mesoporous alumina , phenethyammonium ligands and atomic-layer-deposition tin oxides at desired interfaces in inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Thus, the interface defects, non-radiative recombination and ion migration can be remarkably suppressed, resulting in improvement of interface contacts and hole/electron transport. As a result, both cation-size mismatch and interface stabilization (CM-IS) strategies enable hysteresis-free, reproducible 21.9% and 16.9% efficient NiO x -based inverted PSCs and PSMs. Moreover, a high V oc of 1.16 V and 8.05 V can be obtained in large-area PSCs (1 cm 2 ) and PSMs (11.2 cm 2 ) with 7 subcells connected in series. Additionally, the measured T 85 lifetime (the time as a function of PCEs decrease to 85% of its initial value) of unencapsulated PSCs under continuous AM 1.5G light illumination is approximately 1000 h.
