O3-type NaNi 1/3 Fe 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 is considered as one of the most promising cathode candidates for sodium-ion batteries due to its high specific density and low cost. However, rapid capacity degradation and sluggish diffusion kinetics , caused by structural distortions and irreversible phase transitions, present significant challenges to its commercial application. In this study, we design a series of O3-NaNi 1/3-x Fe 1/3 Mn 1/3 Al x O 2 cathodes with varying Al 3+ doping concentrations, synthesized through a one-step liquid-phase modified precursor method followed by post-calcination. Notably, an optimal level of Al 3+ substitution at the transition metal sites significantly enhances the structural stability during long cycling. However, excessive Al doping at the Na-site hampers sodium-ions diffusion, thereby limiting the rate performance. The optimal performance is achieved with the O3-NaNi 1/3-0.005 Fe 1/3 Mn 1/3 Al 0.005 O 2 cathode, which exhibits remarkable overall electrochemical performance including a high specific capacity of 151 mAh g -1 at 1 C, superior cycle stability with 85 % capacity retention after 150 cycles in a half cell, and improved rate performance (74 mAh g -1 at 10 C). This work provides valuable insights into the behavior of inactive element substitution, offering a pathway for the development of long-cycle life O3-type oxide cathodes and contributing to novel materials design strategies.

High-capacity O3-type layered sodium oxides are considered one of the most promising cathode materials for the next generation of Na-ion batteries (NIBs). However, these cathodes usually suffer from low high-rate capacity and poor cycling stability due to structure deformation, native air sensitivity, and interfacial side reactions. Herein, a multi-site substituted strategy is employed to enhance the stability of O3-type NaNi 0.5 Mn 0.5 O 2 . Simulations indicate that the Ti substitution decreases the charge density of Ni ions and improves the antioxidative capability of the material. In addition, the synergistic effect of K + and Ti 4+ significantly reduces the formation energy of Na + vacancy and delivers an ultra-low lattice strain during the repeated Na + extraction/insertion. In situ characterizations verify that the complicated phase transformation is mitigated during the charge/discharge process, resulting in greatly improved structure stability. The co-substituted cathode delivers a high-rate capacity of 97 mAh g −1 at 5 C and excellent capacity retention of 81% after 400 cycles at 0.5 C. The full cell paired with commercial hard carbon anode also exhibits high capacity and long cycling life. This dual-ion substitution strategy will provide a universal approach for the new rational design of high-capacity cathode materials for NIBs.

O3-type layered oxides are promising cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, their application is limited by tortuous Na+ diffusion channels and complex phase transitions. In this study, a high-rate, low-volume-strain O3-Na0.9Cu0.05Fe0.15Ni0.25Mn0.55O2 (CFNM) cathode is synthesized using a Cu and Fe doping strategy. Multiple characterization techniques and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that co-doping modulates the TM-O (transition metal-oxygen) and Na-O bond interactions, expanding Na+ diffusion channels and reducing diffusion energy barriers; the co-doping also promotes electron localization within the TM layers, alters the Na+ deintercalation sequence, and mitigates structural degradation, thereby facilitating rapid and reversible O3-P3 phase transitions without monoclinic phase transitions. The lattice parameter changes exhibit characteristics similar to those of a solid solution, featuring a minimal volume change of 1.1%. Consequently, CFNM delivers a specific capacity of 85.5 mA h g-1 at 10 C and retains 85.2% capacity after 500 cycles at 5 C. Additionally, the full cell assembled with hard carbon (HC) achieves an energy density of 322.8 Wh kg-1 and retains 76.4% capacity after 200 cycles at 1 C. Excellent air stability further demonstrates the practical applicability of CFNM. This study provides new insights into the development of high-performance cathode materials for SIBs.

Na-based layered transition metal oxides with an O3-type structure are considered promising cathodes for sodium-ion batteries. However, rapid capacity fading, and poor rate performance caused by serious structural changes and interfacial degradation hamper their use. In this study, a NaPO 3 surface modified O3-type layered NaNi 1/3 Fe 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 cathode is synthesized, with improved high-voltage stability through protecting layer against acid attack, which is achieved by a solid-gas reaction between the cathode particles and gaseous P 2 O 5 . The NaPO 3 nanolayer on the surface effectively stabilizes the crystal structure by inhibiting surface parasitic reactions and increasing the observed average voltage. Superior cyclic stability is exhibited by the surface-modified cathode (80.1% vs 63.6%) after 150 cycles at 1 C in the wide voltage range of 2.0 V–4.2 V (vs Na + /Na). Moreover, benefiting from the inherent ionic conduction of NaPO 3 , the surface-modified cathode presents excellent rate capability (103 mAh g −1 vs 60 mAh g −1 ) at 10 C. The outcome of this study demonstrates a practically relevant approach to develop high rate and durable sodium-ion battery technology.

Rapid capacity fading and structural collapse, along with other deep-rooted challenges in the high-voltage region, are insufficient to meet the requirements for commercial applications of O3-type layered cathodes. Hereby, rare earth metal (RE) within the IIIB group are utilized as the robust dopants for O3-NaNi 1/3 Fe 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 (NFM) to achieve the purpose of reconstructing the crystal lattice and regulating the interlayer structure. The inactive RE 3+ acts as a pillar, reinforces the TMO 6 octahedron, and broadens the Na + diffusion layer in the configuration of O-Na-O-TM (RE)-O-Na-O, giving rise to the enhanced crystal stability and accelerating the transmission of sodium ions. More impressively, the scandium incorporation is working as a “vitamin” that improves Ni/Fe redox reversibility, alleviating the irreversible P3-O3’-P3’ phase transformation and further restraining the disordered Fe migration into the neighboring Na layer, which is firmly validated by in situ X-ray diffraction coupled with the synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Consequently, the as-designed NFM-Sc exhibits impressive rate capability (82.5 mAh g −1 at 10 C) and excellent cycle stability with 80.2% capacity retention after 500 cycles at the high voltage of 4.2 V. Given this, the elaborate work may shed new insight into the operational mechanism of rare metal through strategically regulating the structure for sodium-ion batteries.

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have received widespread attention, and are regarded as one of the most promising substitutes for lithium-ion batteries in the field of large-scale energy storage. O3 type layered oxides are the mainstream SIBs cathode materials, due to their high specific capacity and low cost. However, the unsatisfied electrochemical properties like cycle stability and rate capability induced by the severe interfacial side reaction and structural failure, significantly impede practical applications. Herein, as a proof of concept, we compared O3-NaNi 1/3 Fe 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 cathode materials with spherical (s-NFM) and laminar (i-NFM) mesoscopic morphology to demonstrate the effect of morphological regulation on the electrochemical performance. Our results show that the spherical strategy could effectively reduce the side reactions and enhance the structure stability owing to the specific microspherical structure. As a result, the s-NFM cathode shows impressive electrochemical performance at 0.5C, with a discharge specific capacity of 128.6mAh g −1 and a capacity retention rate of 75.8 % after 200 cycles, which are much better than i-NFM. This study provides a new design for the development of high-performance SIB cathode materials.

Graphical This work provides in-depth investigation into the electrochemical and structural properties of O3-Na[Li 1/3 Mn 2/3 ]O 2 , a promising high-capacity anionic redox cathode material for sodium-ion batteries. Our findings also indicate that enhanced cycling stability and suppressed impedance increases can be achieved through optimized upper and lower cutoff voltages. Activating anionic redox is an effective strategy for enhancing the capacity of cathode materials in both lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries. However, the fundamental mechanisms of O3-type sodium anionic redox cathodes remain poorly understood due to the limited availability of such materials, despite their inherent advantages such as high initial sodium content and high reversible capacity. Herein, we employ multiple characterization methods to elucidate the structural and electrochemical properties of O3-Na[Li 1/3 Mn 2/3 ]O 2 , a promising sodium anionic redox cathode developed recently, with a particular focus on the effect of cutoff voltages during electrochemical aging. Our synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction results indicate that charging the material to voltages above 4.1 V induces substantial structural changes, which compromise the structural and electrochemical reversibility of the material. This is corroborated by more rapid capacity decay and increased impedance, attributed to severe degradation on both the surface and in the bulk, as evidenced by the formation of lower valence manganese compounds. Furthermore, increasing the lower cutoff voltage for the discharge process effectively suppresses surface degradation, thereby improving cycling stability. This work offers a comprehensive understanding of a pivotal sodium anionic redox cathode material, providing valuable insights that can drive the development of advanced materials for sodium-ion batteries.

In order to meet the practical application of sodium ion batteries (SIBs), a low energy consumption method is recommended to synthesize the layered NaCrO 2 cathode materials. Enabled by the larger Na + diffusion coefficients promoted by a proper high temperature, the as-synthesized O3-type NaCrO 2 material shows superior rate performance even at elevated temperatures, exhibiting 47.4 mA h g −1 at 100 C and 60°C. Opposite to the good cyclic capability at room temperature, however, the high-temperature cyclability of NaCrO 2 deteriorates due to the complex irreversible structural evolution in NaCrO 2 during cycling at elevated temperatures. This work boosts the industrial development of layered oxide cathode materials for SIBs with outstanding high-rate performance especially at high temperatures, and in the meantime deepens the understanding of the high-temperature capacity decay mechanism for layered oxide cathode materials.

Transition metal layered oxides have emerged as promising cathodes for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), yet suffer from sluggish kinetics and serious capacity attenuation due to surface side reactions, microcracks and surface residual alkalies. One effective improvement strategy typically by single surface coating is used to boost electrochemical performances. Here, a dual-surface-coated O3-NaNi 0.4 Fe 0.2 Mn 0.4 O 2 (NFM) cathode is prepared using the in-situ formed Na 3 PO 4 /P3-NFM during the thermal decomposition reaction of NH 4 H 2 PO 4 . The Na 3 PO 4 coating layer, formed by NH 4 H 2 PO 4 and the residual sodium species on the surface of O3-NFM, serves as a protective layer; while the P3-NFM, with layered structure anchored firmly on the O3-NFM surface, facilitates fast Na + diffusion kinetics. The Na 3 PO 4 /P3-NFM coatings rebuild the interface as a stable and fast path for Na + transport, enhance the interface stability, and restrain the adverse factors for interfacial side reactions, intragranular cracks and irreversible phase transformations. Consequently, the optimized cathode exhibits satisfactory rate capabilities (130.6 mAh g −1 at 1C and 90.0 mAh g −1 at 10C), and a favorable cyclability (75.6 % after 300 cycles at 1C), as well as an excellent air stability. These results promise a highly effective improvement strategy for boosting electrochemical performances of promising layered oxide cathodes for SIBs.

Proton conducting oxides are attracting increasing attention due to their promising application as electrolytes in solid-state electrochemical devices for energy conversion and chemical production, including protonic ceramic fuel cells, electrolyzers and membrane reactors. BaZrO3 and Ba(Zr,Ce)O3 substituted by acceptor dopants are currently the most promising proton conductors. In principle, replacing Zr or Ce with one kind of trivalent element (e.g., Y or Yb) can generate oxygen vacancies, which are necessary for the hydration reaction to introduce charge carriers of protons. However, it is commonly recognized that substituting Zr or Ce with Y and Yb simultaneously leads to high performance of the devices, but the reason is not clear. In this work, we studied the transport properties of four different compositional classes: BaZr0.8−xCexY0.2O3−δ (BZCY20), BaZr0.8Y0.2−xYbxO3−δ (BZYYb), BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2−xYbxO3−δ (BZCYYb) and BaCe0.8Y0.2−xYbxO3−δ (BCYYb), at 600, 650 and 700 °C. For BZCY20, the ionic conductivity decreases on replacing Zr in BZY20 with x = 0.1 of Ce, increases with increasing Ce content within x = 0.1–0.5, and decreases on further increasing Ce content from x = 0.5 to 0.8. The ionic transport number increases with increasing Ce content. The ionic conductivity, partial conductivity of oxide ions and hole conductivity of BZCYYb and BCYYb increase with increasing Yb content. Since the increment of hole conductivity is larger, the ionic transport number decreases. For BZYYb, the ionic conductivity decreases and the hole conductivity increases with increasing Yb content, leading to decreasing ionic transport number. Both the high ionic conductivity and transport number are vital factors governing the performance of protonic ceramic cells (PCCs). Therefore, the improved performance of PCCs by adding both Y and Yb into the electrolyte cannot be explained from the viewpoint of electrical properties of the electrolytes. Thereby, we summarized our recent series of studies on the chemical compatibility between the electrolyte and NiO negatrode substrate, and suggested that the loss of dopant was suppressed by partly replacing Y with Yb. The high ionic conduction of the electrolyte can be maintained after co-sintering at high temperature to fabricate PCCs. This might be the real reason for the high performance of the devices using Y and Yb co-substituted electrolytes, prepared by the co-sintering method.

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have recently gained wildly interest due to the abundance of sodium, lower production costs, and better low-temperature performance compared to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Among various cathode materials of SIBs, O3-type NaNi 0.4 Fe 0.2 Mn 0.4 O 2 (NFM424) demonstrates high capacity and ease of synthesis, yet suffers from structural degradation and sluggish Na + kinetics caused by large ionic radius and strong electrostatic interactions. To overcome these issues, a configuration strategy combined with TiO 2 and Co 3 O 4 by a simple solid-state reaction method was introduced to improve structural and electrochemical stability. XRD, SEM, TEM, and various electrochemical characterizations as well as TGA/DSC tests were conducted. The resulting NaNi 0.4 Fe 0.2 Mn 0.3 Co 0.05 Ti 0.05 O 2 (NFMCT) cathode mitigated Jahn-Teller distortions and Na + /vacancy ordering while enhancing phase integrity and diffusion pathways. The obtained NFMCT maintained 93.7 mAh·g −1 after 550 cycles at 1 C, with superior rate capabilities at 2 C and 5 C. These findings deepen the understanding of configuration strategy by using multi-element oxide and highlight a practical strategy for designing high-performance SIB cathodes.

The performance of sodium-ion batteries critically depends on the cathode materials used, making it essential to explore and optimize suitable candidates. Among them, O3-structured NaNi0.33Fe0.33Mn0.33O2 has emerged as one of the most promising cathode materials due to its outstanding electrochemical properties. However, there still exists a knowledge gap regarding the detailed synthesis conditions and the comprehensive performance of the full cell using this material. In this study, we investigated the influence of synthesis temperature, time, and sodium content on the electrochemical performance and charge-discharge kinetics of O3-structured NaNi0.33Fe0.33Mn0.33O2, prepared via the PVP-gel combustion method. Through systematic analysis, we elucidated the impact of these synthesis parameters on the material’s properties and battery performance. The results revealed that the optimized conditions led to a cathode material with superior electrochemical performance, exhibiting enhanced capacity with 139 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C and 96 mAh g−1 at 10 C. Additionally, a full cell using the optimized cathode material was studied, showing promising performance. This research sheds light on the significance of synthesis parameters in tailoring the electrochemical properties of O3-structured NaNi0.33Fe0.33Mn0.33O2 for sodium-ion batteries. The insights gained from this study hold valuable implications for the further development of practical sodium-ion battery cathode materials.
