Cost-effective, earth-abundant and high electroactive bi-functional electrocatalyst for ORR (oxygen reduction reaction) and OER (oxygen evolution reaction) is desirable for developing sustainable energy systems such as fuel cells, electrolyzers and metal-air batteries . In this work, Ag nanoparticles were first deposited on h-BN sheets via a simple complexation-reduction method, by using carbon nanotube as the conductive material . The structure, morphology and composition of obtained Ag-BN/C catalyst were characterized by XRD (X-ray diffraction), SEM (scanning electron microscopy), EDX (energy-dispersive X-ray), Raman, TEM (transmission electron microscopy) and XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy). These tests confirmed the presence of Ag on the h-BN support and tightly binding together by carbon nanotubes. Ag-BN/C shows improved ORR electrocatalytic activity which is comparable to that of Pt/C catalyst. The as-prepared catalyst also exhibits excellent OER catalytic activity. The long-time running and the tolerance to methanol studies show that the Ag-BN/C catalyst possesses high stability properties in alkaline medium. This investigation may provide technical and theoretical validation for application in fuel cells.

In this work, S-doped AuPbPt alloy nanowire-networks (NWNs) are synthesized by conformal growth of Pt onto S-doped AuPb NWNs as templates, which are obtained by NaBH4 reduction of an extended network of 2 nm Au nanoclusters resulting from Pb2+ ion-directed self-assembly. The contents of Pb and S in the S-doped AuPb NWNs are optimized in order to create the appropriate content of PtS in the resulting S-doped AuPbPt alloy NWNs because Pb in both AuPb3 and PbS is involved with the formation of PtS and PbPtx during the conversion of S-doped AuPb NWNs to S-doped AuPbPt alloy NWNs. Moreover, the formation of an optimal content of PtS in the resulting S-doped AuPbPt alloy NWNs remarkably downshifts the d-band center of Pt, on the basis of results from X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and then improves the resistance of active Pt sites against oxidation and in turn renders the Pt surfaces more catalytically active for the ORR and more structurally stable. Furthermore, the as-prepared S-doped AuPbPt alloy NWNs indeed exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activity towards both the ORR (e.g., Eonset = 1.047 V and E1/2 = 0.921 V) and HER (Eonset = −2 mV and overpotential of 12 mV at 10 mA cm−2) in acidic media with excellent durability because of the presence of an optimal amount of PtS, based on the results of control experiments and DFT calculations.

Due to the unique characteristics like large specific surface area of Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDs) and its well-defined hollow Metal-Organic Framework (MOF), it is widely used in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), oxygen reduction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction(OER). Herein, we prepare N-doped C hollow metal organic frame structure materials , which are used as a template, WS 2 nanocrystals are grown and encapsulated in MOF with interfacial W–N coupling centers. During the pyrolysis, after carbonizing, ZIF-67 becomes Co, N-doped C materials, and the growth of WS 2 is effectively suppressed, creating multi-functional groups W–N/C@Co 9 S 8 @WS 2 materials. The synthesized material is employed as a counter electrode (CE) for dye-sensitized solar cells, its high power conversion efficiency (PCE) (7.38%) based DSSC under AM 1.5G irradiation was much more than that of Pt (7.06%). Such excellent electrocatalytic performance was resulted from the unique frame pore structure , the synergistic effect of WS 2 , Co 9 S 8 and W–N multi-functional groups. Besides, W–N/C-4@Co 9 S 8 @WS 2 shows E 1/2 ≈0.84 V and a little Tafel slope of 44 mVdec −1 when employed as electrocatalysts for ORR and potential ≈ 1.79 V to achieve the current density of 10 mA cm −2 , which are lower than that of Pt/C ≈ 1.91 V catalysts in 0.1 M KOH.

Rising energy demand has forced to look for new ways to convert energy. Graphene quantum dots (GQD) has received extensive attention in many fields due to their low toxicity, abundant active sites, sound water solubility and photoluminescence stability. Here, a fluorine-nitrogen co-doped GQD (C-GQD) is synthesized for efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts. The incorporation of fluorine and nitrogen atoms changed the electronic structure of the carbon atom, resulting into synergistic enhancement of catalytic performance toward ORR. Electrochemical studies of the ORR showed that the initial potentials of C-GQD were positively shifted by 200 mV and 170 mV compared with those of GQD and N-GQD, respectively, and the half-wave potentials were positively shifted by 200 mV and 180 mV, which were comparable to that of 20% Pt/C. The CV curves underwent only slight fluctuations after 10,000 cycle tests. The obtained results provide important insights into the use of metal-free catalysts with GQDs as carriers as promising electrocatalysts for proton exchange membrane fuel cells with low cost and easy preparation procedures. In the pursuit of a technological breakthrough in zinc-air batteries, it is critical to find economical, durable, and high-performance catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) to accelerate the slow reaction kinetics. Herein, a one-pot method was employed to synthesize the polymer within a mixed solvent of CHCl3 and CH3OH (v/v = 2:1). The resulting polymer can be well-dispersed in deionized water to form an aqueous metal–organic gel (MOG). Testing has revealed that Co-MOG exhibits dual catalytic properties for both the OER and ORR, a characteristic that is notably rare in original MOG materials. Furthermore, it demonstrates exceptional long-term charge–discharge cycling stability in zinc-air batteries, outperforming several reported Co-based catalysts for the OER and ORR. X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the CoN3 configuration serves as the catalytically active site of the material. In conclusion, this work supports the application of MOGs as unique bifunctional electrocatalysts for the OER and ORR in metal-air batteries.

Electrochemical energy and substance conversion devices involve complex electrode processes characterized by multiple charge transfer steps, competing pathways, and various intermediates. Such complexity makes it challenging to enhance the electrocatalytic activity. The prevailing strategy typically focuses on optimizing the geometric and electronic structures of the electrocatalysts to align the adsorption energies of reaction intermediates with the peak of the activity Volcano curve. In this study, we demonstrate that surface decoration can effectively shape the micro reaction environment for the model system of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on Pt electrodes. By applying a partial hydrophobic I* adlayer on the Pt surface, we can shift the equilibrium of OH* reduction and weaken H2O* adsorption, which significantly enhances ORR kinetics. With in situ scan tunneling microscopy (STM) and theoretical calculations, our study reveals the formation of isolated Pt2 surface units situated in a hydrophobic valley surrounded by adsorbed iodine atoms. This minimalist Pt2 active unit exhibits significantly greater activity for the ORR compared to an extended Pt surface. Our results overturn the previous consensus that the I* adlayer always poisons the electrocatalytic reaction. Our systematic studies also reveal that whether I* acts as a poison or a promoter, as well as the extent of its promotional effect, depends on its coverage. This finding could pave the way for developing highly efficient catalysts with potential applications in fuel cell technology and metal air batteries and extension to other electrochemical conversion reactions such as ammonia synthesis and CO2 reduction.

The development of highly efficient and stable bifunctional catalysts is of crucial importance for advancing the large-scale application of zinc-air batteries (ZABs). This present study introduces a composite catalyst composed of cobalt-based sulfides supported on nitrogen-doped graphene (Co@NG-S2), synthesized through a two-step sulfurization strategy. The first sulfurization stage was successful in achieving co-doping of sulfur (S) and nitrogen (N) while enhancing the conductivity and activity of the graphene support. The second sulfurization step promoted the uniform distribution of cobalt-based sulfides and strengthened their interfacial coupling with graphene, thereby significantly improving their bifunctional catalytic performance. Electrochemical characterization revealed that Co@NG-S2 exhibited an oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) onset potential of 0.868 V and a half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.798 V (vs. RHE). For the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), Co@NG-S2 demonstrated a low overpotential of merely 430 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm -2 , thereby demonstrating exceptional ORR/OER bifunctional activity. In addition, a liquid ZAB assembled with this catalyst achieved a peak power density of 110 mW cm -2 and exhibited cycling stability exceeding 200 hours. This study proposes a novel strategy for the synthesis of high-performance transition metal sulfide-carbon-based catalysts, demonstrating considerable promise for future applications.

Effectively improving catalytic activity of nitrogen (N)-doped carbon catalysts in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is very important but still facing with challenges. Herein, we proposed a “solvent effect” strategy to prepare a high active N-doped carbon catalyst with trace iron (N-C-Fe-ethanol, 0.10 at.% Fe) via pyrolysis of polyaniline (PANI)-iron (Fe) coordination polymer washed with ethanol. Electrochemical results show that N-C-Fe-ethanol catalyst exhibits a remarkable 109 mV positive shift of half-wave potential compared with that of catalyst unwashed PANI-Fe coordination polymer, and its limiting current density (3.61 mA-cm -2 ) is closer to that of Pt/C catalyst in acid media. It was demonstrated that the surface structure of PANI-Fe coordination polymer could be tuned via removing some nitrogen-containing groups such as –N + = groups and other small molecules on its surface, which helped to generate a high ratio of graphitic N in the pyrolysis process. This work develops a new path for improving the ORR activity of N-doped carbon catalysts.

Ca 3 Co 4 O 9+δ (CCO) cathode has been extensively studied for its excellent thermal expansion matching with commonly used electrolytes. CCO composite cathode with different concentrations of La 0.9 Sr 0.1 Ga 0.8 Mg 0.2 O 3 (LSGM) was prepared to evaluate its performance on LSGM electrolyte in this work. The appropriate amount of LaCoO 3 generated by the in-situ reaction of CCO and LSGM under operating conditions significantly enhances the oxygen exchange ability of CCO cathodes. The composite cathode containing 60 wt. % CCO and 40 wt. % LSGM (C-LGM60) exhibits the best electrochemical performance and the lowest polarization impedance among the C-LGM series cathodes. The area-specific resistance (ASR) of C-LGM60 is 0.06 Ωcm 2 at 750 °C. The maximal power density of the electrolyte-supported cell with C-LGM60 cathode reaches 489 mWcm -2 at 800 °C. After a 10 h stabilizing, there is no observable decline of the cell during the next 40 h of discharge. These results encourage the research of using CCO cathode on LSGM electrolytes and make valuable improvements on the development of SOFC cathode.

Graphical Same but different : Two isomorphic metal−organic frameworks (MOFs) [FJU-40-H ( a ) and FJU-40-NH 2 ( b )] were used to construct core−shell materials MOF@MOF. This strategy has resulted in an N-doped porous carbon material that displays high catalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Here we propose a new strategy in which two isomorphic metal−organic frameworks (MOFs) [FJU-40-H ( a ) and FJU-40-NH 2 ( b )] are used to construct the core-shell material MOF@MOF. This strategy based on nitrogen doping and specific surface has resulted in an N-doped porous carbon (NPC) material in a one-step thermal treatment in N 2 atmosphere; this material displays high catalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The materials were analyzed by SEM, XPS, Raman, specific surface area, pore size distribution and electrochemical measurements. It was found that NPC derived from the core-shell MOF@MOF can provide excellent catalytic ORR performance exceeding that of the single MOF. The onset potential is NPC-b@a-4h (−0.068 V)>NPC-a@b-4h (−0.075 V)>NPC-a-4h (−0.109 V)>NPC-b-4h (−0.113 V). Moreover, the results also show that the performance of NPC-b@a (n=4.15) is better than that of NPC-a@b (n=3.32), which means the different nitrogen content of ligands inside and outside of the core affects the ORR properties.

The development of low-cost bifunctional catalysts with high catalytic activity and durability for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a critical step for successful commercialization of Zn-air batteries. In this study, N-doped mesoporous carbon containing dispersed FeN x species is prepared and tested as an ORR and OER bifunctional catalyst for this battery type. Physical-chemical characterization of the newly prepared material demonstrated that NaCl can be effective as a porous structure forming template during carbonization . Resulting mesoporous structure containing FeN x species provides significant number of ORR and OER active sites. The optimized catalyst displays higher limiting current density and more positive half-wave potential for ORR than commercial Pt/C, as well as lower overpotential for OER than RuO 2 in KOH electrolyte. Furthermore, the obtained carbon material used as an air cathode in a specially assembled rechargeable Zn-air cell demonstrates electrocatalytic performance superior to those of Pt/C and RuO 2 electrodes, which makes it a promising non-precious metal bifunctional catalyst for Zn-air batteries.

Transition metal oxide nanomaterials or nanocomposites containing transition metal oxides have the potential to replace traditional catalysts for electrochemical applications, photocatalysis, and energy storage. Amorphous manganese oxide catalysts were prepared via photochemical metal–organic deposition (PMOD). Through XRD, SEM-EDS, Raman spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, HRTEM-EDS, and XPS, we confirmed that amorphous manganese oxide catalysts were successfully prepared. Amorphous catalysts prepared with different photolysis times were compared in terms of their performance for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and catalyst MnOx-PMOD48 showed the best performance because of its high Mn3+ proportion and electrochemically active surface area. MnOx-PMOD48 showed better ORR/OER performance than the crystalline MnOx and MnOx/Ti4O7 catalysts from our previous work. Following our previous work on crystalline manganese oxide catalysts, we added Ti4O7 during the PMOD process with 48 h of treatment and obtained the amorphous catalyst MnOx/Ti4O7-PMOD. MnOx/Ti4O7-PMOD was supported by Ti4O7 particles, which led to improved stability. The ORR/OER catalytic activity of MnOx/Ti4O7-PMOD was better than that of crystalline catalyst MnOx/Ti4O7-300, which was the best crystalline catalyst in our previous work. We also compared lithium-oxygen batteries assembled with MnOx/Ti4O7-PMOD and MnOx/Ti4O7-300. The battery performance tests confirmed that the amorphous manganese catalyst had better ORR/OER bifunctional catalytic performance than the crystalline manganese catalyst because of its high defect state with more abundant edge active sites and more surface-exposed catalytic active sites.
