Interfacial Engineering of PA1012 Composites With Balanced Toughness and Strength Using POE Ionomer and Al2O3-PA

Jiaqi Guo,Qiuyue Wang,Yanxia Cao,Yanyu Yang,Jianfeng Wang,Wanjie Wang

Polyamide 1012 (PA1012) composites with balanced strength and toughness were fabricated by blending with lanthanum-neutralized polyolefin elastomer (POE) ionomers and nano-alumina grafted with nylon short chains (Al 2 O 3 -PA). Al 2 O 3 -PA was synthesized based on in situ polymerization, while POE ionomers with different glutamic acid/maleic anhydride mole ratios were prepared through melt-blending. The multiple interactions between La 3+ -carboxyl/amide groups and dynamic networks formed by chain entanglement of Al 2 O 3 -PA with PA1012 and POE ionomers significantly improved PA1012's mechanical properties. Compared with pure PA1012, the impact toughness (92.0 kJ/m 2 ) of PA1012/POE ionomer/Al 2 O 3 -PA composites was 14 times higher while the tensile strength (53.4 MPa) retained 86.1% of its value. Rheological characterization showed decreased melt viscosity, helping with processing challenges in rubber-toughened plastics. The toughening mechanism was attributed to matrix yielding, elastomer particle deformation, and dynamic network destruction. This work provides an efficient strategy for designing high-performance polyamide composites with balanced mechanical properties and enlarging their applications in automotive, electronics and military fields. Highlights Preparation of POE ionomer and Al 2 O 3 -PA. Investigating synergistic interactions of POE ionomer with Al 2 O 3 -PA. Enhanced improvement in mechanical performance of PA1012 composites. Exhibiting a dynamic network based on rheological measurements.

Research on HV-PA-based composite microgel coatings for the temporary protection of unearthed bronze ware

Hengrui Hu,Junying Chen,Xia Huang,Jiachang Chen

Limited research exists on the temporary protection of unearthed bronzes during transportation to museum environments. An eco-friendly protective coating for bronzes featuring corrosion inhibition, reinforcement, and nondestructive peeling was developed. The HV-PA+ L -Arg composite microgel was prepared by mixing polyvinyl alcohol/polyethylene glycol diacrylate microgel (PA) with l -arginine-containing pre-crosslinking solution (HV) followed by centrifugation. Results from colorimetric analysis showed that the composite microgel did not alter the appearance of bronzes. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed a corrosion inhibition efficiency of up to 95.72 %. The corrosion inhibition mechanism was analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, density functional theory, and molecular dynamics simulation. Compression and tensile tests quantified the reinforcement of HV-PA-based composite microgels before and after cross-linking, demonstrating that compressive strength increased by approximately 2.70-fold and tensile strength by 2.27-fold. Reinforcement mechanisms were analyzed using rheological tests and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The nondestructive stripping performance of the HV-PA+ L -Arg composite microgel was characterized by scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and Raman. Nondestructive stripping, achievable via ethanol spraying and ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, offers dual options for flexible removal of the protective coating, ensuring subsequent restoration or reprocessing of bronze relics.

Boric acid-functionalized PANI-ABA/PA hydrogel-based flexible pH sensor for real-time sweat monitoring

Meihui Gao,Xianjing Zhang,Shiqi Li,He Gao,Xinyu Li,Dongyuan Xu,Longbin Xu

Background Wearable pH sensors have emerged as promising tools for real-time health monitoring, particularly for sports and clinical applications, due to their ability to monitor key physiological indicators such as sweat pH. Sweat analysis provides valuable insights into metabolic processes and physical exertion. However, the development of flexible, stable, and highly sensitive sensors for accurate sweat pH detection remains a challenge. Conductive polymer such as polyaniline (PANI), have gained attention due to their unique properties, but further improvements in mechanical flexibility and sensor performance are needed to fully realize their potential for wearable biosensing applications. Results We present a boric acid-functionalized PANI-ABA/PA hydrogel, synthesized via electrochemical deposition, where boric acid plays a crucial role in crosslinking the rigid PANI material into a flexible, porous grid structure. This crosslinking improves the mechanical properties of the hydrogel while enhancing its ion-exchange capacity, leading to greater sensitivity and selectivity for H + ions. PANI-ABA/PA hydrogel exhibits super-Nernstian behavior (77.80 mV pH −1 ) across the physiological pH range (3.00–10.00), with rapid response times, minimal temperature drift, and excellent repeatability. Moreover, the hydrogel exhibits outstanding antifouling properties, ensuring consistent performance even in dynamic environments. Real-time human subject testing confirms the sensor's ability to accurately monitor sweat pH during physical activity, providing reliable and real-time data. These results highlight the promising potential of the PANI-based hydrogel for wearable biosensors in health monitoring. Significance and novelty This study highlights the role of boric acid in facilitating the formation of a crosslinked PANI-based grid structure, which improves the sensor's performance in wearable applications. Enhanced sensitivity, stability, and mechanical flexibility make this smart wearable sensor a promising candidate for continuous, non-invasive health monitoring. It opens new opportunities for real-time athletic performance tracking, personalized healthcare, and disease diagnostics, positioning it as a leading technology for future wearable health-monitoring systems.

Scalable Layer-Controlled Oxidation of Bi2O2Se for Self-Rectifying Memristor Arrays With sub-pA Sneak Currents

Yingjie Zhao,Zhefeng Lou,Jiaming Hu,Zishun Li,Lanxin Xu,Zhe Chen,Zhuokai Xu,Tao Wang,Mengqi Wu,Haoting Ying,Minghao An,Wenbin Li,Xiao Lin,Xiaorui Zheng

Smart memristors with innovative properties are crucial for the advancement of next-generation information storage and bioinspired neuromorphic computing. However, the presence of significant sneak currents in large-scale memristor arrays results in operational errors and heat accumulation, hindering their practical utility. This study successfully synthesizes a quasi-free-standing Bi 2 O 2 Se single-crystalline film and achieves layer-controlled oxidation by developing large-scale UV-assisted intercalative oxidation, resulting β-Bi 2 SeO 5 /Bi 2 O 2 Se heterostructures. The resulting β-Bi 2 SeO 5 /Bi 2 O 2 Se memristor demonstrates remarkable self-rectifying resistive switching performance (over 10 5 for ON/OFF and rectification ratios, as well as nonlinearity) in both nanoscale (through conductive atomic force microscopy) and microscale (through memristor array) regimes. Furthermore, the potential for scalable production of self-rectifying β-Bi 2 SeO 5 /Bi 2 O 2 Se memristor, achieving sub-pA sneak currents to minimize cross-talk effects in high-density memristor arrays is demonstrated. The memristors also exhibit ultrafast resistive switching (sub-100 ns) and low power consumption (1.2 pJ) as characterized by pulse-mode testing. The findings suggest a synergetic effect of interfacial Schottky barriers and oxygen vacancy migration as the self-rectifying switching mechanism, elucidated through controllable β-Bi 2 SeO 5 thickness modulation and theoretical ab initio calculations.

US/PA/MR multimodal imaging-guided multifunctional genetically engineered bio-targeted synergistic agent for tumor therapy

Ren Li,Wang Yaotai,Tang Yu,Wang Fang,Du Yan,Ou Xia,Lin Li,Zhang Zhong,Ding Yan,Wu Meixian,Zhou Yijun,Zhang Mingyang,Wang Qi,Zou Jianzhong

Focused ultrasound ablation surgery (FUAS) is a minimally invasive treatment option that has been utilized in various tumors. However, its clinical advancement has been hindered by issues such as low safety and efficiency, single image guidance mode, and postoperative tumor residue. To address these limitations, this study aimed to develop a novel multi-functional gas-producing engineering bacteria biological targeting cooperative system. Pulse-focused ultrasound (PFUS) could adjust the ratio of thermal effect to non-thermal effect by adjusting the duty cycle, and improve the safety and effectiveness of treatment. The genetic modification of Escherichia coli ( E.coli ) involved the insertion of an acoustic reporter gene to encode gas vesicles (GVs), resulting in gas-producing E.coli (GVs -E.coli ) capable of targeting tumor anoxia. GVs -E.coli colonized and proliferated within the tumor while the GVs facilitated ultrasound imaging and cooperative PFUS. Additionally, multifunctional cationic polyethyleneimine (PEI)-poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles (PEI-PLGA/EPI/PFH@Fe 3 O 4 ) containing superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO, Fe 3 O 4 ), perfluorohexane (PFH), and epirubicin (EPI) were developed. These nanoparticles offered synergistic PFUS, supplementary chemotherapy, and multimodal imaging capabilities.GVs -E.coli effectively directed the PEI-PLGA/EPI/PFH@Fe 3 O 4 to accumulate within the tumor target area by means of electrostatic adsorption, resulting in a synergistic therapeutic impact on tumor eradication. In conclusion, GVs -E.coli -mediated multi-functional nanoparticles can synergize with PFUS and chemotherapy to effectively treat tumors, overcoming the limitations of current FUAS therapy and improving safety and efficacy. This approach presents a promising new strategy for tumor therapy. Graphical

Highly enhanced toughness and thermal oxygen aging resistance of PA 6 via novel designed macromolecular antioxidants

Lulu He,Jinfen Lou,Xiang Nie,Min He,Qiao Fan,Jifei Yang,Yufei Liu,Shuhao Qin,Jie Yu

Polyamide 6 (PA6) is widely utilized, yet it confronts challenges such as susceptibility to thermal oxidative aging and high sensitivity to notch impact during usage. In addressing these issues, two novel toughening macromolecular antioxidants, 3-(3,5-di- tert -butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propionic acid 2-acrylamidoethyl ester styrene copolymer (PAS) and 3-(3,5-di- tert -butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propionic acid 2-acrylamidoethyl- N -phenylmaleimide copolymer (PAN), were synthesized via free radical copolymerization. Upon incorporation into PA6, their effects on PA6 performance were investigated. Relative to pure PA6, PA6/PAN and PA6/PAS exhibited significant improvements in fracture elongation, with increases of 136.91 % and 313.83 % respectively, along with notch impact strength enhancements of 18.55 % and 24.89 % respectively. This enhancement can be attributed to PAN and PAS reducing the hydrogen bond density between PA6 molecular chains. Subsequent long-term accelerated thermal aging tests conducted at 150 °C, as well as performance testing of samples before and after aging, revealed that the aging of PA6/PAN and PA6/PAS could be delayed by 4–12 days. The exceptional anti-thermal oxidative aging ability and toughening effect of these two macromolecular antioxidants in PA6 showcase promising prospects for its expanded applications.

Highly permeable PA@GO loose nanofiltration membranes enabled by hierarchical transport channels for efficient dye removal

Xia Zhan,Rui Ge,Teng Huo,Juan Lu,Jiding Li

Graphene oxide (GO) membranes exhibit ultrafast water permeation properties, which have been employed in various membrane-based separations including nanofiltration for dye removal from textile wastewater. However, it’s still a great challenge to achieve precise control over the microstructure of GO membranes and obtain ultrathin GO membranes with exceptional separation efficiency and robust membrane structure. Herein, in-situ confined interfacial polymerization (IP) is proposed for fabricating loose polyamide (PA)@GO hybrid membranes with high permeance and dye rejection as well as robust membrane stability. A new diamine of sulfadiazine (SA) with intrinsic hydrophilic and conjugated sulfonamide groups is employed as cross-linker of GO membranes and monomer of PA in IP process, simultaneously. PA is in-situ synthesized in confined GO interlayer via IP process and intercalated into GO interlayer, which enlarges the interlayer spacing of GO membranes gradiently. The combination of hydrophilic PA nanofiltration layer on GO membrane surface and the PA intercalated GO membrane with varying interlayer spacing creates hierarchical transport channels for water molecules, which contributes to the high water permeance. Moreover, the less reactive SA monomer endows PA@GO selective layer with appropriate negative charge and loose transport channels, which contributes to both of high permeance and dye rejection due to Donnon effect and size exclusion effect. The PA@GO hybrid membrane exhibits high permeance of 75.5 L/(m 2 ·h·bar) with TB dye rejection of 99.8 %, and exhibits low NaCl rejection of 11.6 %. Moreover, PA@GO hybrid membrane shows good fouling resistance and long-term stability as well as stable separation performance under harsh conditions. Both of high permeance and dye rejection of PA@GO hybrid membrane suggests that the integration of PA nanofiltration layer and GO membrane via in-situ confined interfacial polymerization can achieve the delicate control over the interlayer channel structure and the physicochemical properties of the membrane surface of GO membranes, which offers a promising method to break through the trade-off effect between permeability and selectivity of GO membranes.

Mesoporous carbon hemispheres integrated with Fe–Gd nanoparticles for potential MR/PA imaging-guided photothermal therapy

Mengmeng Zhang,Tianze Wu,Hui Zhang,Zhenxia Chen,Yannan Yang,Yun Ling,Yaming Zhou

Asymmetric carbon has emerged as an important material to enrich morphologies as well as enhance functions for bioapplications. Here, asymmetric mesoporous carbon hemispheres (CHS) integrated with γ-Fe2O3 and GdPO4 (Fe–Gd) nanoparticles are proposed and prepared for potential imaging-guided photothermal therapy (PTT). Interestingly, Fe–Gd/CHS contributes to an almost 1.5 times enhancement in light harvesting and photothermal conversion efficiency as compared with its corresponding spherical analogue. The possible underlying mechanism is discussed in view of the unique asymmetric structure-featured carbon. Further identification of the inherited photoacoustic (PA) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging properties leads to the consequent in vivo evaluation of its imaging and PTT performances, which demonstrates its capability as a function-integrated system for potential theranostics.

High-Performance PA Nanofiltration Membrane with Coral-Reef-Like Morphology atop Polydopamine Decorated EVOH Nanofiber Scaffold

Siqi Ma,Nian Liu,Pan Cheng,Wei Hu,Xiaodan Jia,Qihao Guo,Ming Xia,Qin Cheng,Ke Liu,Dong Wang

The pursuit of highly permeable thin-film nanocomposite (TFNC) nanofiltration (NF) membranes with desirable selectivity is an eternal topic for desalination and wastewater treatment. Herein, a facile route to engineer polyamide (PA) NF membranes is reported with a coral-reef-like thin PA active layer atop a polydopamine pre-decorated ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) nanofiber scaffold (EVOH-PDA) via interfacial polymerization (IP). EVOH-PDA possesses a submicron pore size and super-hydrophilic surface, which provides abundant thin water layers covering nanofibers in the IP process resulting in the PA layer with a morphology of coral-reef-like highland surrounded by flat low-lying regions. The resultant NF membrane presents high permeance of 32.19 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 and high rejection of 96.52% to 1000 ppm Na 2 SO 4 feed solution with a stable performance against operation time and high salt concentration. This work provides a new approach to fabricating PA TFNC membranes with outstanding NF performance in liquid separation applications.

Multifunctional Gd-CuS loaded UCST polymeric micelles for MR/PA imaging-guided chemo-photothermal tumor treatment

Du Yan,Liu Di,Sun Mingchen,Shu Gaofeng,Qi Jing,You Yuchan,Xu Yiting,Fan Kai,Xu Xiaoling,Jin Feiyang,Wang Jun,Shen Qiying,Zhu Luwen,Ying Xiaoying,Ji Jiansong,Wu Liming,Liu Daren,Du Yongzhong

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a life-threatening disease for which there is no effective treatment currently. Novel theranostics simultaneously having excellent imaging and therapeutic functions are highly desired in cancer therapy. Herein, we develop the sialic acid (SA) modified polymeric micelles at an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) of 43 °C (sialic acid-polyethylene glycol)-poly(acrylamide- co -acrylonitrile), SA-PEG-p(AAm- co -AN)), which further encapsulated with doxorubicin (DOX) and Gd-CuS nanoparticles (Gd-CuS NPs) for chemo-photothermal treatment of HCC guided by magnetic resonance (MR)/photoacoustic (PA) dual-mode imaging. The resultant SA-PEG-p(AAm- co -AN)/DOX/Gd-CuS (SPDG) had an excellent photothermal conversion efficiency, enabling SPDG with an instantaneous release behavior of DOX under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. This study also revealed that SPDG could actively target to HCC, which was due to that SA had a high affinity with E-selectin overexpressed at the tumor site. Moreover, benefiting from the HCC-targeted ability and NIR light-controlled on-demand delivery of DOX, SPDG showed a superior potential in MR/PA dual-mode imaging-guided chemo-photothermal treatment. Overall, our study reveals that the designed SPDG may be used as an ideal multifunctional nanoplatform for cancer theranostics.

A PA/O-NGO/PPS sandwich composite membrane prepared via multi-step interfacial polymerization for desalination

Gao Yuan,Zhou Xinghai,Zhang Maliang,Li Zhenhuan

In view of the disadvantages of concentration polarization and trade-off effects in the application of membrane in desalination field, oxide-nano graphene oxide/polyamide (O-NGO/PA) loose intermediate layer and PA ultra-thin dense layer were introduced to fabricate PA/O-NGO/polyphenylene sulfide composite membrane with sandwich structure via multi-step interfacial polymerization (MS-IP) method. The selective permeation mechanism of ultrathin layer produced by different aqueous monomers (PIP and MPD) was studied, the effect of its physicochemical structure on the relief of concentration polarization phenomenon and the breakthrough of trade-off effect was analyzed. The ultra-thin and dense PA layer mainly played the role of interception and shortened the water molecular penetration path. In the retention test of metal salt solution, compared with the rough surface, it was found that the smooth surface was more conducive to the diffusion of intercepted metal ions into the feed solution, thus alleviating the concentration polarization phenomenon. Bacteria-Instructed In Situ Aggregation of AuNPs with Enhanced Photoacoustic Signal for Bacterial Infection Bioimaging

Shi-Zhao Lu,Xiao-Yan Guo,Mei-Shuai Zou,Zi-Qin Zheng,Yu-Chuan Li,Xiao-Dong Li,Li-Li Li,Hao Wang

The emergence of drug-resistant bacteria is becoming the focus of global public health. Early-stage pathogen bioimaging will offer a unique perspective to obtain infection information in patients. A photoacoustic (PA) contrast agent based on functional peptide modified gold nanoparticles (AuNPs@P1) is developed. These nanoparticles can be specifically tailored surface peptides by bacterial overexpressed enzyme inducing in situ aggregation of the gold nanoparticles. In the meantime, the close aggregation based on the hydrogen bonding, π–π stacking, and hydrophobic interaction of the peptide residues on the surface of gold nanoparticles exhibits a typical redshifted and broadened plasmon band. In addition, this active targeting and following in situ stimuli-induced aggregation contribute to increased nanoparticle accumulation in the infected site. Finally, the dynamic aggregation of AuNPs@P1 results in dramatically enhanced photoacoustic signals for bioimaging bacterial infection in vivo with high sensitivity and specificity. It is envisioned that this PA contrast agent may provide a new approach for early detection of bacterial infection in vivo.
