PBA@PPy derived N-doped mesoporous carbon nanocages embedded with FeCo alloy nanoparticles for enhanced performance of oxygen reduction reaction

Yusheng Li,Yun Feng,Li Li,Keyan Wu,Xiangjie Bo,Jianbo Jia,Liande Zhu

Due to the obstacle of sluggish kinetics on cathode of fuel cells and metal–air batteries, developing low-cost and durable electrocatalysts to replace the platinum-based catalysts still remains a grand challenge. Here, we describe a simple self-template approach to synthesize N-doped mesoporous carbon nanocages (FeCo@NC) embedded with FeCo alloy nanoparticles as oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalyst. The resulting heterostructure is derived from corresponding PBA@PPy composites, which are pre-prepared by polymerization of polypyrrole (PPy) layer on Prussian blue analogue (PBA) nanocubes. The FeCo alloy nanoparticles with an average particle size of ∼10 nm are well dispersed and confined within the shell of carbon nanocages. Benefiting from the mesoporous structure and the synergetic interaction of binary metals, the optimized FeCo@NC-3-800 electrocatalyst exhibits comparable ORR performances (0.83 V for half-wave potential (E 1/2 ), 5.323 mA cm −2 for limiting current density (J k )), superior durability and excellent methanol tolerance to the commercial Pt/C (20 wt%). This work provides an appropriate strategy for general, efficient and practical synthesis of more promising non-precious metal electrocatalyst with high ORR activity.

S-doping Fe–Ce composites derived from PBA to accelerate Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle in the Fenton-like process

Jinli Qiu,Huifang Chan,Wenting Zheng,Yao Feng,Fuqiang Liu

The design of metal–organic framework-derived metal oxides/sulfides is an effective approach for water remediation. A series of Fe–Ce composites (Fe–Ce–S–N) with cluster-like morphology were prepared with prussian blue analogue (PBA) as the precursor in a hydrothermal process. S doping promoted the conversion of Fe(III) to Fe(II), which greatly improved the performance of the Fenton-like reaction. The optimized Fe–Ce–S–N catalyst exhibited superior catalytic activity towards sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) degradation (18.63 mgSMZ gcat−1 min−1), showing the largest k value (0.1862 min−1), which was 2.1 and 8.1 times higher than that of Fe–Ce–S–H and Fe–Ce–N, respectively. Moreover, the Fe–Ce–S–N catalyst displayed a remarkable reusability, stability and adaptability in Fenton-like systems. Overall, this work provides new insights into extending novel PBA-derived catalysts to significantly improve heterogeneous Fenton-like performances.

Enriching and Smart Releasing Curcumin via Phenylboronic Acid-Anchored Bioinspired Hydrogel for Diabetic Wound Healing

Bangjiao Zhao,Shuangli Zhu,YuWei Liu,Jiayi Zhu,Huitong Luo,Maocai Li,Hao Wang,Qi Feng,Xiaodong Cao

Diabetic wounds suffer from bacterial infections, reactive oxygen species, and inflammatory reactions. Curcumin (Cur) is a natural diketone with antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant activities, but poor water solubility and toxicity at high local concentration. Herein, inspired by the oxygen transport process of red blood cells via the dynamic interaction of hemoglobin and oxygen, phenylboronic acid (PBA)-anchored hydrogel (GOHA-PBA) is utilized to achieve active enrichment and smart release of Cur, which can reverse the inflammatory microenvironment and promote wound healing. First, PBA-modified gelatin (Gel-PBA) and oxidized hyaluronic acid (OHA) crosslink and form GOHA-PBA by borate ester reaction and Schiff base reaction. GOHA-PBA possesses excellent curcumin loading efficiency with 130 000 times than that in water and forms Cur-laden GOHA-PBA (GOHA-Cur). GOHA-Cur has injectability, self-healing, and self-adaptive properties, which are conducive to surgical procedure. GOHA-Cur owns reversible adhesion properties, facilitating it be peeled off and remove harmful substances, including excess glucose, acids, bacteria, and ROS at the wounds. GOHA-Cur can pH and glucose responsively release Cur; hence, it shows excellent antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory effects in vitro. Animal experiments show that GOHA-Cur can inhibit inflammation and promote wound regeneration. This study can provide a valuable concept for Cur delivery and diabetic wound healing.

Addition of PBA-CC cathode in a FCDI system enabling flexible regulation of degradation of tetracycline and synergistic ionic byproduct removal

Tian Zhao,Minghao Yu,Kexin Kang,Xiaoyan Wang,Jiayuan Zhang,Junjun Ma,Jianrui Niu,Situ Mu,Jing Zhang,Chun Liu

This study successfully developed a novel dual-cathode flow electrode capacitive deionization (DC-FCDI)/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) coupled system for simultaneous tetracycline (TC) degradation and removal of PMS reaction byproduct ions. The system integrates a high-performance Prussian blue analogue-modified carbon cloth (PBA-CC) as a dedicated inner-circuit reaction cathode with external flowing electrodes responsible for continuous ion migration and desalination. The PBA-CC plays a pivotal role in the coupled system by providing abundant redox-active Fe/Co sites and nitrogen-containing functional groups, which enable efficient PMS activation through mixed-valence Fe(II)/Fe(III) and Co(II)/Co(III) cycling under the applied electric field. Besides, the PBA-CC also facilitates localized electron transfer and transient cation accumulation at the electrode/influent interface, thereby enhancing PMS utilization efficiency and alleviating the competition between pollutant degradation and ion removal. Mechanistic studies, via quenching experiments and EPR tests, identified SO₄• − , •OH, O₂• − , and 1 O₂ as key reactive oxygen species. Crucially, the system exhibited excellent long-term operational stability over five cycles, maintaining high removal rates for both TC (72.3%) and ions (40.7%). In summary, this innovative DC-FCDI/PMS system offers a highly effective, stable, and energy-efficient solution for simultaneous organic pollutant degradation and byproduct ion desalination, presenting a promising advance in sustainable water treatment technologies.

Three-dimension structural Co-Fe-P/Cu3P derived from the Prussian blue analogue (PBA) grown on nanorods for oxygen evolution reaction

Qian Zhao,Lei Liu,Ying Du,Sisi Jiang,Tingshun Jiang

Rational design of non-noble metal electrocatalyst with high stability and activity for OER is desirable for the production of renewable energy to solve the environmental crisis. Starting from Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) with special advantages, the trimetallic hollow structural Co-Fe-P/Cu 3 P/CF covered with extended nanosheets grown on nanorods was synthesized via ion exchange and calcination approaches in this study. The overpotential of the prepared electrode was only 205 mV at a current density of 100 mA cm − 2 , and it can maintain the stable catalytic activity for at least 60 h. The prominent electric performance is mainly attributed to the construction of the unique morphology, in which the rod-shaped structure can promote the transportation of the reactants, and the hollow structure as well as the nanosheets outside can expand the specific surface area. The electronic interaction between multiple metals can also improve the conductivity of the catalyst. The characterization analysis of the post electrode after long-term oxygen evolution reaction imply that the surface of the catalytic electrode was partially oxidized to the corresponding oxide, which can generate the new active sites to maintain the high catalytic activity together with the residual phosphide. Our research might provide a new reference for the deep exploration of PBA-based materials applied in electrochemical energy conversion and storage.

Baroplastics with Ultrahigh Strength and Modulus via Hydrogen-Bonding Interactions with Agar

Jia-Ning Qiao,Qian-Cheng Yang,Yue Li,Zhi lv,Jian-Hua Tang,Jun Lei,Zhong-Ming Li

For the traditional processing of polymers, a high temperature, generally above 200 °C, is needed to melt the polymers. The high temperature not only causes a large amount of energy consumption but also thermal degradation of the polymers. In this work, we have prepared a representative baroplastic poly(n-butyl acrylate)@polystyrene (PBA@PS) core–shell polymer, which can be processed at a much lower temperature multiple times to overcome the above-mentioned problems. To address their poor mechanical property issue, such as weak strength and low modulus, we introduced stronger hydrogen bonds of agar into PBA@PS matrix. The results show that the PBA@PS/agar composites possess significantly improved strength and ultrahigh modulus, much higher than that of previously reported core–shell baroplastics. The tensile strength and Young’s modulus are as high as 8.4 and 350.6 MPa, respectively, which are enhanced by 265 and 4702% compared with the pure PBA@PS baroplastic. The reinforcement results from the hydrogen bonds of agar. In addition, the baroplastics can be repeatedly processed at 100 °C at the same condition with a small loss of mechanical properties. This work provides a way to strengthen the baroplastics and thus increases their application potential.

Ni–Fe PBA hollow nanocubes as efficient electrode materials for highly sensitive detection of guanine and hydrogen peroxide in human whole saliva

Qiangqiang Niu,Cancan Bao,Xiaowei Cao,Chang Liu,Hui Wang,Wenbo Lu

A sensor for the determination of guanine (G) and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) is developed based on Ni–Fe Prussian blue analogues hollow nanocubes (Ni–Fe PBA HNCs) for the first time. As a remarkable redox probe towards G and H 2 O 2 oxidation , Ni–Fe PBA HNCs exhibit a series of predominant sensing performances as follows: lower limit of detection, broader linear range and higher selectivity due to the homogeneous hollow structure, high specific surface and the enhanced electron transfer ability of Ni–Fe PBA HNCs. As a G sensor, it exhibits a wide linear range (0.05–4.0 mM) and a low detection limit of 0.0104 μM (S/N = 3). As a H 2 O 2 sensor, the Ni–Fe PBA HNCs show superior sensing performances with a low detection limit of 0.291 μM (S/N = 3) and a wide detection range of 0.1–20 mM. By cause of these advantages, the real-time detection of G and H 2 O 2 in human saliva are triumphantly accomplishment, indicating the applicability of Ni–Fe PBA HNCs.

Novel Core–Shell PS-co-PBA@SiO2 Nanoparticles Coated on PP Separator as “Thermal Shutdown Switch” for High Safety Lithium-Ion Batteries

Haiyang Liao,Haiyan Zhang,Gai Qin,Haoqun Hong,Zhenghui Li,Yingxi Lin,Liuqing Li

Thermal runaway is a hazardous behavior of lithium-ion batteries under extreme conditions and is mainly cause for restraint of its commercial applications in development of high-power and high-rate lithium-ion batteries. In this paper, a new dual-functions coating layer fabricated from polystyrene-poly(butyl acrylate) copolymer encapsulated silica nanoparticles as “thermal shutdown switch” with a reasonable shutdown temperature of ≈80 °C is designed and coated on polypropylene separator. The shell polymer owing to its self-adhesion upon glass transition temperature ( T g ) can retard off the Li + conduction between the electrodes, thus prevents cell from thermal runaway, the core nanoparticles protect the separator from significantly thermal shrinkage when the cell temperature keeps going up. Moreover, the coated separator has no negative affection on the normal electrochemical performance of the batteries, thereby implying that this coating layer provides a simple and effective approach to control the safety of commercial lithium-ion batteries by internal self-protecting.

Hierarchical MXene@PBA nanohybrids towards high-efficiency flame retardancy and smoke suppression of robust yet tough polymer nanocomposites at ultra-low additions

Richeng Lian,Qingyao Gao,Zexuan Zhao,Mingyu Ou,Xinliang Liu,Lei Liu,Xilei Chen,Chuanmei Jiao

Developing efficient flame-retardant MXene-based polymeric materials with enhanced mechanical properties has been a huge challenge. Herein, Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) were used to modify the surface of MXene nanosheets via an electrostatic self-assembly method to construct hierarchical MXene-based nanohybrids (MXene@PBA). Then, MXene@PBA was incorporated into the epoxy matrix to fabricate high-performance epoxy nanocomposites (EP-MXene@PBA). The study indicates that hierarchical MXene@PBA exhibits excellent dispersion performance in the epoxy matrix. Notably, MXene@PBA results in high-efficiency flame retardancy and smoke suppression for epoxy nanocomposites at ultra-low additions. What is very surprising is that only 1.0 wt% MXene@PBA can easily enhance the UL-94 rating of EP-1.0%MXene@PBA to V0. Meanwhile, the peak heat release rate (pHRR), total smoke production (TSP), and peak CO production rate (pCO) are remarkably reduced by 36.70%, 34.28%, and 43.48%, compared to those of the pristine epoxy resin, respectively. Furthermore, the 1.0 wt% MXene@PBA nanohybrids can enhance the flexural and impact strengths of EP-1.0%MXene@PBA. This work provides a feasible strategy for the creation of multifunctional MXene derivatives and their polymeric nanocomposites and holds great promise for many industrial applications.

Microenvironment-responsive metal-phenolic network release platform with ROS scavenging, anti-pyroptosis, and ECM regeneration for intervertebral disc degeneration

Hao Zhou,Jinpeng He,Renfeng Liu,Jun Cheng,Yuhao Yuan,Wanpu Mao,Jun Zhou,Honghui He,Qianqi Liu,Wei Tan,Cijun Shuai,Youwen Deng

Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) can be caused by aging, injury, and genetic factors. The pathological changes associated with IVDD include the excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), cellular pyroptosis, and extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation. There are currently no approved specific molecular therapies for IVDD. In this study, we developed a multifunctional and microenvironment-responsive metal-phenolic network release platform, termed TMP@Alg-PBA/PVA, which could treat (IL-1β)-induced IVDD. The metal-phenolic network (TA-Mn-PVP, TMP) released from this platform targeted mitochondria to efficiently scavenge ROS and reduce ECM degradation. Pyroptosis was suppressed through the inhibition of the IL-17/ERK signaling pathway. These findings demonstrate the versatility of the platform. And in a rat model of IVDD, TMP@Alg-PBA/PVA exhibited excellent therapeutic effects by reducing the progression of the disease. TMP@Alg-PBA/PVA, therefore, presents clinical potential for the treatment of IVDD.

NiFe PBA nanocube as both anode and cathode catalysts for enzyme-free fuel cell-based self-powered sensor to detect catechol or hydroquinone

Ying Zhang,Guoliang Zu,Han Sun,Zhenchao Li,Serge Cosnier,Aihua Liu

NiFe PBA exhibits laccase-mimic for ORR and electrocatalyze oxidation of CC and HQ. • A self-powered sensor by assembling NiFe PBA as both anode and cathode catalyst. • The sensor capable of detecting CC or HQ in simulated wastewater satisfactorily. Biofuel cells are widely applied in designing self-powered sensors (SPS) due to their rich fuel source, environmental friendliness, and advantages in operating under neutral pH and room temperatures. However, they are limited by inherent drawbacks of biological enzymes as catalysts, such as poor stability and high costs, greatly restricting their real applications. Herein we report on NiFe Prussian blue analogue (PBA) nanocubes with good mimicking laccase activity, which can not only exhibit excellent oxygen reduction reaction in the absence of electron mediators, but also efficiently electrocatalyze the oxidation of phenolic fuels. Subsequently, a dual-chamber enzyme-free fuel cell was constructed using NiFe PBA as both the anode and cathode catalysts as well as catechol (CC)/hydroquinone (HQ) as the fuel. Based on this, a SPS was developed to detect CC or HQ. The maximum power density ( P max ) of the HQ-fueled sensor is linear within 0.5 μM–5 mM HQ in three parts. Similarly, the P max for CC-fueled sensor is linear with 5 μM–5 mM CC in three parts. Moreover, the sensor has excellent selectivity and is capable of monitoring simulated wastewater. Thus, this work demonstrates an efficient enzyme-free biofuel cells based SPS using the same nanomaterial as anode and cathode catalyst. Magnetic-supported catalyst derived from red mud-based Fe-Co PBA for efficient degradation of organic pollutants by activating peroxymonosulfate under visible light

Shitong Liu,Jun Wang,Yang Liu,Baojun Yang,Chunxiao Zhao,Shichao Yu,Chenxu Wang,Guanzhou Qiu,Junwu Liu,Yingchun Fang

To alleviate the environmental pressure caused by the continuous accumulation of solid waste red mud (RM) and organic pollutants, we developed a magnetic-supported catalyst derived from RM-based Fe-Co Prussian blue analogues (RM-Co PBA-D) using RM as the iron source and carrier. Then, the catalyst was used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) under visible light for the degradation of tetracycline (TC) and rhodamine B (RhB). Due to the superior dispersion, strong visible light response, and high photo-generated carrier separation efficiency of the RM-Co PBA-D, the RM-Co PBA-D/PMS/Vis system could completely degrade both TC (10 mg/L) and RhB (20 mg/L) in 30 min, with mineralization efficiencies as high as 70.12 % and 60.59 %, respectively. Several reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as SO 4 ⋅− , ⋅OH − , ⋅O 2 − , 1 O 2 , and h + were involved in the degradation process, with SO 4 ⋅− and 1 O 2 playing a dominant role. More importantly, except for the production of ROS, the regeneration of active sites (Co 2+ /Fe 2+ ) mediated by photo-generated carriers was also a critical factor in enhancing the removal of organic pollutants. In addition, the constructed system demonstrated significant potential for practical applications, which was attributed to the stable structure and catalytic performance of the catalyst as well as the strong ability of the system to resist interference by impurity anions and detoxify organic pollutants.
