Hydrophilic PVA-co-PE nanofiber membrane functionalized with iminodiacetic acid by solid-phase synthesis for heavy metal ions removal

Ying Lu,Zhihong Wu,Mufang Li,Qiongzhen Liu,Dong Wang

A novel hydrophilic poly(vinyl alcohol- co -ethylene) (PVA- co -PE) nanofiber membrane for heavy metal ions removal was fabricated by the solid phase synthesis of iminodiacetic acid (IDA) on nanofiber membrane surfaces. The hydrophilic PVA- co -PE nanofiber membranes were activated with cyanuric chloride . The IDA was then covalently linked to the activated PVA- co -PE nanofiber membranes. The chemical structures of activated and functionalized PVA- co -PE nanofiber membranes were confirmed with FTIR–ATR. The morphology of PVA- co -PE nanofiber membranes were characterized with SEM. The increase in the amount of IDA on functionalized PVA- co -PE nanofiber membranes significantly improved the adsorption amount of Cu 2+ . The IDA functionalized PVA- co -PE nanofiber membranes demonstrated excellent adsorption capability of Cu 2+ , Co 2+ , Zn 2+ and Ni 2+ . The adsorption of above heavy metal ions could be repeatedly regenerated by desorbing the ions adsorbed on nanofiber membranes. The novel IDA functionalized PVA- co -PE nanofiber membranes have great potential in the application of industry and drinking water treatment .

PFOS-induced placental cell growth inhibition is partially mediated by lncRNA H19 through interacting with miR-19a and miR-19b

Jing Li,Xiao-jie Quan,Gang Chen,Jia-wei Hong,Qi Wang,Lin-lin Xu,Bing-hua Wang,Ze-hua Yu,Hong-Min Yu

Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), a persistent environmental pollutant, has been associated with decreased birth weight. The dysregulation of long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) H1 9 has been implicated in pregnancy complications such as intra-uterine growth retardation (IUGR), preeclampsia (PE), however, the expression and function of H19 in PFOS-exerted detrimental effects in the placenta remains to be unveiled. Here, we explored the role of H19 in PFOS-induced placental toxicity. Results showed that PFOS caused decreased cell growth in human HTR-8/SVneo cells. Expression of H19 was increased, while miR-19a and miR-19b expression were decreased in mice placenta tissues and in HTR-8/SVneo cells exposed to PFOS. A significant hypomethylation was observed at the H19 promoter in the placentas of mice that were gestational exposed to high dose of PFOS. H19 was confirmed to bind with miR-19a and miR-19b, targeting SMAD4 . Furthermore, H19 appeared to partially improve the cell growth of HTR-8/SVneo cells exposed to PFOS via upregulation of miR-19a and miR-19b. In summary, our findings revealed that H1 9/miR-19a and miR-19b/SMAD4 axis exerted important functions in PFOS-induced placenta cell toxicity.

Simultaneous detection of ascorbic acid, dopamine, and uric acid using an rGO/PE/PVP@ HPMC/GCE electrode in biological matrices

Al Kiey Sherief A.,Baseer Rasha A.,Kamel Samir

The simultaneous detection of ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA), and uric acid (UA) is crucial for biomedical and clinical diagnostics. Herein, we present a highly sensitive and selective electrochemical sensor based on a modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) functionalized with hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and 3D reduced graphene oxide/pentaerythritol (3D rGO/PE). The structural and morphological properties of the composite were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Electrochemical analysis demonstrated the remarkable electrocatalytic activity of 3D rGO/PE/PVP@HPMC/GCE for the oxidation of AA, DA, and UA, with peak potential separations of 214, 133, and 346 mV for DA-AA, DA-UA, and UA-AA, respectively. Under optimized conditions, the sensor exhibited wide linear detection ranges of 4.0 µM to 1.0 mM (AA), 0.2–100 µM (DA), and 1.0–100 µM (UA), with detection limits of 0.82, 0.002, and 0.025 M, respectively. The sensor demonstrated excellent sensitivity, selectivity, reproducibility, and stability, making it a promising platform for real-sample analysis.

Efficient degradation of polyethylene (PE) plastics by a novel vacuum ultraviolet-activated periodate system: Operating parameters, by-products, and toxicity

Mahmoud Samy,Esmail M. El-Fakharany,Kenneth Mensah,Karim Amer,Jiantao Li,Dennis Y.C. Leung

This article presents a vacuum ultraviolet (VUV)-activated periodate (PI) system for the degradation of polyethylene (PE) plastics for the first time. The study compares the performance of the VUV/PI with VUV/sulfite, VUV/peroxymonosulfate, and VUV/persulfate degradation systems. At an oxidant concentration of 5 mM, reaction time of 6 h, PE plastics concentration of 0.1 g/L, PE plastics size of 12 mm, and pH 7, VUV/PI degradation system attained a mass loss ratio of 3.9 %, which was higher than the other degradation systems. The mass loss ratio increased to 4.9 % at pH 3, and 6.8 % for a plastic size of 6 mm. The degradation mechanism was found to involve iodate radicals and singlet oxygen as the main reactive species. Prolonging reaction time to 120 h resulted in a mass loss percentage of 61.8 %. SEM, FTIR, and water contact angle analyses after the degradation show cracks on PE plastics surface, an increase of carbonyl index, and a decrease of hydrophobicity affirming the efficient oxidation of PE plastics by the generated reactive species. The main oxidation by-products were alcohols, esters, acids, and ketones. Cytotoxicity and phytotoxicity analyses confirmed the efficient oxidation of PE plastics by the generated reactive species to result in low toxicity of the generated intermediates. The proposed study presents a simple and effective degradation system that can be implemented on a wider scale as a tertiary treatment in wastewater treatment plants for the degradation of plastics before release to the ecosystem.

NaClO post-treatment: A specific strategy to boost RO performance of PE-based TFC-PA RO membranes from RIP processes

Yanlin Jiang,Lixin Xue,Xuwen Zhang,Jing He,Yeqiang Lu,Congjie Gao

A post-treatment strategy, involving immersion in sodium hypochlorite solution, was found to be specifically effective in improving the reverse osmosis (RO) performance of polyethylene (PE) based thin film composite (TFC) polyamide (PA) membranes prepared from reverse phase interface polymerization (RIP) processes. RIP processes produced abundant amine groups on the PA surfaces to allow the formation of abundant PA-N(H)Cl intermediates, while the inertness of the PE substrates preserved them for self-coupling into azo linkages, -N N-. Due to the formation of the azo cross-linking structure, the salt rejection rate of the PA layer was enhanced, while the degradation of part of the -C( O)-NH- groups increased surface ionic groups at pH 8, improving water permeance. Experiments were conducted to determine the most suitable concentration, pH value, and treatment time of the sodium hypochlorite solution. Treatment with a sodium hypochlorite solution at 500 ppm and pH 8 for 4 min increased the permeance of the PA/PE TFC membrane from 1.59 ± 0.02 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 to 1.63 ± 0.03 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 , while the salt rejection rate increased from 98.64 ± 0.06% to 99.24 ± 0.08%. The membrane also maintained good operational stability, antifouling property, and enhanced alkaline stability.

Yolk–Shell Structured ST@Al2O3 Enables Functional PE Separator with Enhanced Lewis Acid Sites for High-Performance Lithium Metal Batteries

Taotao Zhou,Wenhao Tang,Junwen Lv,Yirui Deng,Qiang Liu,Lei Zhang,Ruiping Liu

Commercial polymer separators usually have limited porosity, poor electrolyte wettability, and poor thermal and mechanical stability, which can deteriorate the performance of battery, especially at high current densities. In this work, a functional polyethylene (PE) separator is prepared by surface engineering a layer of Ti-doped SiO 2 @Al 2 O 3 particles (denoted as ST@Al 2 O 3 -PE) with strong Lewis acid property and uniform porous structure on one side of the PE separator. On the other hand, ST@Al 2 O 3 particles with abundant pore structures and large cavities can store a large amount of electrolyte, providing a shortened pathway for lithium-ion transport, and the Lewis acid sites and porous structure of the ST@Al 2 O 3 can tune Li plating/stripping behavior and stabilize the lithium metal anode. The ST@Al 2 O 3 -PE separators exhibit better ionic conductivity (5.55 mS cm −1 ) and larger lithium-ion transference number (0.62). At a current density of 1 mA cm −2 , Li/Li symmetric cells with ST@Al 2 O 3 -PE separator can be stably cycled for more than 400 h, and both lithium iron phosphate /Li cells and lithium cobaltate/Li cells with ST@Al 2 O 3 -PE separator have good cycling and rate performance. This work provides a new strategy for developing functional separators and promoting the application of lithium metal batteries.

Unraveling the synergistic mechanism of lignin/polyethylene (PE) co-pyrolysis: A multi-scale exploration combining experiments, kinetics and ReaxFF-MD simulations

Fang Xu,Rui Zhang,Mingjun Liu,Shuang Wu,Da Cui,Jingru Bai,Qing Wang

To address the growing challenges of energy crisis and white pollution, co-pyrolysis of lignin and plastics facilitates both biomass resource valorization and pollution mitigation. To gain deeper insight into the synergistic mechanism, this study combined experiments, kinetic analyses, and molecular simulations to systematically investigate the product distributions and bond-breaking behaviors during lignin/PE co-pyrolysis at multiple scales. The kinetic investigation demonstrated that lignin and PE interaction exhibited a positive synergistic effect, significantly lowering the activation energy. Moreover, adding PE promoted the formation of oxygen-free tar while suppressing oxygen-containing tar, consequently enhancing the fuel properties of pyrolysis tar. In parallel, ReaxFF-MD simulations provided molecular-level insights into the dynamic behaviors of chemical bonds during co-pyrolysis. The results demonstrated that lignin/PE co-pyrolysis facilitated C—C bonds breaking but inhibited C—O bonds cleavage, thereby significantly increasing the production of hydrocarbon gases. TG analysis indicated that the interaction between lignin and PE facilitated the release of volatile products. The simulations complemented experimental observations in the secondary reaction stage, demonstrating synergistic promotion of tar formation while inhibiting pyrolysis gas release. This work elucidated the synergistic mechanism of lignin/PE co-pyrolysis at multiple scales, providing theoretical support for the clean conversion and resource recovery of lignin and plastic waste.

Preparation of Surface-Modified Zinc Oxide Nano-Filled PE Films and Their Weathering Resistance Under Different Indoor Artificial Accelerated Aging Methods

Ablat Ablimit,Linyang Fan,Min Liu,Yan Li,Mamatjan Yimit

When used outdoors, polyethylene (PE) film is exposed to ultraviolet radiation with a wavelength of 300 nm, causing molecular chain breakage and leading to deterioration of the film's mechanical properties. To enhance the film's weather resistance, this study modified nano-ZnO (zinc oxide) using different coupling agents. The ultraviolet transmittance and mechanical properties of PE films modified with nano-ZnO incorporating various coupling agents were investigated. The γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane coupling agent (KH550) was selected. The KH550-ZnO/PE film achieved a tensile strength of 34.2 MPa while providing effective UV shielding with minimal visible light blocking. The aging behavior of KH550-modified nano-ZnO-filled PE films under indoor accelerated aging conditions was investigated. By comparing the mechanical properties and UV shielding performance of PE films with varying nano-ZnO concentrations, the optimal loading was determined to be 4 wt%. PE films containing 4 wt% nano-ZnO demonstrated superior weather resistance in pure UV aging tests, maintaining 88.22% tensile strength retention after 40 days of pure UV exposure. In thermo-oxidative aging tests without UV influence, the 4 wt% maintained a tensile strength retention rate of 69.23%. However, in the thermo-oxidative photoaging test, the presence of moisture led to increased hydroxyl radical generation under the photocatalytic effect of nano-ZnO. This resulted in degradation of the modified PE film segments by hydroxyl radicals, manifesting as reduced tensile strength. Furthermore, three-dimensional polymer aging visualization revealed that changes in carbonyl and carboxyl groups within the film also followed the aforementioned aging patterns. This work aims to extend the service life of agricultural films used in high-temperature, dry environments by incorporating modified nano-ZnO.

Grafting Vinyl Acetate Onto Polyethylene as an Alternative Matrix for Enhanced Flame Retardant Dispersion and Fire Performance in EVA/PE Materials

Songchao Zhang,Tongbing Li,Zhenyu Zhang,Haosen Ma,Yu He,Xiwen Zhang,Xiangdong Liu

Ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) is widely used but suffers from high flammability, poor thermal stability, and low hardness. It is often blended with polyethylene (PE) and flame retardants to improve performance, yet this often causes poor synergy and uneven filler distribution. In this study, vinyl acetate (VA) is grafted onto PE via melt grafting to obtain PE-g-VA, which combines the mechanical strength of PE with the polar dispersion of VA. When compounded with aluminum hydroxide (AH), PE-g-VA/AH achieves a limiting oxygen index of 32.1% and a UL-94 V-0 rating without melt dripping. Compared with EVA/PE/AH, PE-g-VA/AH shows 37.2% higher tensile strength and reductions of 33.3% (PHRR), 26.7% (THR), 36.9% (PSPR), and 60.7% (TSP). These improvements arise from the VA side chains, which enhance AH dispersion and char layer integrity. This work provides a feasible matrix-modification strategy for high-performance flame-retardant composites.

Synthesis and Characterization of PE-b-POEGMA Copolymers Prepared by Linear/Hyperbranched Telechelic Polyethylene-Initiated ATRP of Oligo(ethylene glycol) Methacrylates

Pingwei Liu,Weiqiang Lu,Wen-Jun Wang,Bo-Geng Li,Zhibin Ye,Shiping Zhu

Amphiphilic diblock copolymers consisting of linear or hyperbranched polyethylene (PE) and poly[oligo (ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate] (POEGMA) were synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiated by PE macroinitiators (MIs). The MIs contained an end-capping 2-bromoisobutyryl group per chain. Their linear and hyperbranched structures were first synthesized through a ‘‘living’’ polymerization of ethylene under pressure of 27.6 and 1 atm, respectively, using Pd–diimine catalyst, [(ArN=C(Me)–(Me)C=NAr)Pd(CH2)3C(O)O(CH2)2OC(O)C(CH3)2Br]+ SbF6− (Ar = 2,6-(iPr)2C6H3) (1). In the ATRP of OEGMA, the effect of solvent, ligand, and MI concentration on the block copolymer formation were studied. The macroinitiator and block copolymer samples were characterized by GPC, 1H NMR, and DSC measurements. All samples possessed well-defined topologies/structures with narrow molecular weight distributions and controlled lengths of PE and POEGMA blocks. The block structures were verified by an intrinsic viscosity study. Micelle formation and its temperature sensitivity were also analyzed by dynamic light scattering.

All-in-one integrated flexible PE@PET/MXene films for high-performance electromagnetic shields with self-reinforced conductivity and mechanical properties

Zhou Sha,Huan He,Hongjie Ma,Bo Hong,Jian Lu,Xiang Fei,Meifang Zhu

MXene-based composites are deemed as promising electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding candidates to address the rapidly increasing electromagnetic interference and radiation concerns. However, developing high-performance flexible polymer-MXene composites with excellent EMI shielding efficiency (EMI SE), good mechanical properties and superior serving stability is a significant challenge. Herein, a type of all-in-one designed lightweight, thin, ultra-flexible PE@PET/MXene films are developed using a novel PE@PET nonwoven fabric (NWF) as the supporter. A mussel-inspired polydopamine modification facilitates the uniform loading of MXene, achieving high electrical conductivity of the resultant PE@PET/MXene films. A simple hot-pressing process is then employed to melt the sheath PE component of PE@PET to serve as a “self-glue” in adhering and wrapping the loaded MXene nanosheets, while maintaining the core PET fibers as the internal “steel” skeleton. As such, the resultant PE@PET/MXene films exhibit multiple self-enhancement metrics involving high mechanical strength, good electrical conductivity, robust serving stability, and superior EMI shielding performance. An optimized PE@PET/MXene film can preserve an excellent EMI SE of 50.44 dB and an ultra-high absolute shielding effectiveness (SSE/t) of 10606 dB cm 2  g −1 . The versatility of PE@PET/MXene EMI shielding films is further indicated by integrating the flame-retardant additives to endow its flame-retardant function, demonstrating excellent versability and expandability.

Biaxially oriented polyethylene film preserves nutritional quality and extends the shelf life of postharvest peaches

Zhen Wang,Wan-Ken Chen,Kai-Ye Shi,Le-Ying Yan,Song-Li Han,Hui Zhou,Gai-Fang Yao,Hong Wang,Pedro Garcia-Caparros,Hua Zhang

Biaxially oriented polyethylene (BOPE) is a high-strength, lightweight polyethylene material with superior barrier properties. In this study, peaches were packaged using either polyethylene (PE) or BOPE film. The peaches packaged in BOPE film maintained better firmness, color retention, antioxidant content, and nutritional quality than control peaches and those packaged in PE film. Transcriptome sequencing revealed 1041 differentially expressed genes in BOPE-packaged fruit compared with that in the control, and these were enriched in the pyruvate metabolism, flavonoid biosynthesis, and glutathione metabolism pathways. Physiological analyses demonstrated that BOPE packaging reduced malondialdehyde accumulation and increased peroxidase and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity, potentially limiting membrane peroxidation and senescence. BOPE-packaged fruit also retained higher levels of soluble sugars, reducing sugars, free amino acids, and proline, which are critical for fruit flavor and stress adaptation. Together, these results underscore the potential of BOPE as a novel packaging material for the preservation of fruits and vegetables.
