Constructing PEDOT:PSS/Graphene sheet nanofluidic channels to achieve dendrite-free Zn anode

Minghui Qiu,Dong Wang,Benjamin Tawiah,Hao Jia,Bin Fei,Shaohai Fu

Despite the great progress on the development of zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) in recent years, the issue of zinc corrosion in aqueous media and the associated dendrite growth of the electrode remains a major challenge for achieving high-performance anode materials with long-term stability. Herein, we report a facile, yet, effective interfacial optimization of zinc (Zn) anode using a nanofluidic channel (NC) layer made up of Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) decorated graphene sheets (GSs) produced by electrochemical exfoliation. The NCs effectively modulated the Zn ion distribution density, inhibited dendrite growth, and restrained other side reactions due to its tunable channel size and the surface functional groups. Moreover, the extra conductive polymer (PEDOT:PSS) on the NC layer curbed the polarization problem by enhancing the electric field on the Zn anode. As a result, PEDOT:PSS/GS@Zn anode demonstrated prolonged cycling stability for 8000 cycles with substantial improvements in specific discharge capacity due to the enhanced electron transit efficiency. In summary, our work proposes a scalable technological approach to fabricate dendrite-free Zn anodes and provides a universal inspiration to restrain dendrite formation during the ion electroplating processes.

PEDOT:PSS hydrogels with high conductivity and biocompatibility for in situ cell sensing

Taotao Yang,Ming Yang,Chao Xu,Kun Yang,Yuming Su,Yongqin Ye,Lingyun Dou,Qin Yang,Wenbo Ke,Bin Wang,Zhiqiang Luo

Conducting polymer hydrogels, especially poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) hydrogels, show great promise in soft bioelectronics due to their high conductivity and the ability of electrical coupling with tissues for sensing and stimulation. However, it is challenging to solve the problem of poor biocompatibility of PEDOT:PSS hydrogels due to the existing harsh preparation methods with the use of toxic and harmful reagents. Herein, we report the synthesis of PEDOT:PSS hydrogels with positively charged conductive polymers as a cross-linker and the application of PEDOT:PSS hydrogels as in situ electrochemical sensors for living cells. The conductivities of PEDOT:PSS hydrogels prepared using this method without any toxic or harmful reagents can reach up to 3265 S m−1. The facile synthesis approach with a simple mixture of PEDOT:PSS aqueous solution and the monomers of conductive polymers at room temperature also enables the printability of PEDOT:PSS hydrogels to fabricate patterned electrodes. Moreover, all the proposed PEDOT:PSS hydrogels demonstrated good biocompatibility. The in situ electrochemical detection of dopamine secreted from PC12 cells cultured within PEDOT:PSS hydrogels suggests that our PEDOT:PSS hydrogels with high conductivity and biocompatibility offer great potential for the integration of biosensors within 3D cell culture.

Self-Healable PEDOT:PSS-PVA Nanocomposite Hydrogel Strain Sensor for Human Motion Monitoring

Jie Cao,Zhilin Zhang,Kaiyun Li,Cha Ma,Weiqiang Zhou,Tao Lin,Jingkun Xu,Ximei Liu

Strain sensors based on conducting polymer hydrogels are considered highly promising candidates for wearable electronic devices. However, existing conducting polymer hydrogels are susceptible to aging, damage, and failure, which can greatly deteriorate the sensing performance of strain sensors based on these substances and the accuracy of data collection under large deformation. Developing conductive polymer hydrogels with concurrent high sensing performance and self-healing capability is a critical yet challenging task to improve the stability and lifetime of strain sensors. Herein, we design a self-healable conducting polymer hydrogel by compositing poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) nanofibers and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) via both physical and chemical crosslinking. This PEDOT:PSS-PVA nanocomposite hydrogel strain sensor displays an excellent strain monitoring range (>200%), low hysteresis (<1.6%), a high gauge factor (GF = 3.18), and outstanding self-healing efficiency (>83.5%). Electronic skins based on such hydrogel strain sensors can perform the accurate monitoring of various physiological signals, including swallowing, finger bending, and knee bending. This work presents a novel conducting polymer hydrogel strain sensor demonstrating both high sensing performance and self-healability, which can satisfy broad application scenarios, such as wearable electronics, health monitoring, etc. Keywords:conducting polymer hydrogels;PEDOT:PSS;self-healing;strain sensors;wearable electronics

Alcohol solvent treatment of PEDOT:PSS hole transport layer for optimized inverted perovskite solar cells

Liu Yue,Cai Hongkun,Chu Yinhuan,Su Jian,Ye Xiaofang,Ni Jian,Li Juan,Zhang Jianjun

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is widely used as a hole transport materials in perovskite solar cells, due to a variety of suitable properties. However, the existence of the insulated PSS chain leads to the low electrical conductivity, which should be improved for the further development of inverted perovskite solar cells. In this study, three alcohol solvents were proposed for post-treatment of PEDOT:PSS thin films, which utilized the electrostatic shielding effect of alcohol molecules to promote phase separation of the PEDOT chain and the PSS chain. At the same time, The insulated PSS chain was removed by dissolving in highly hydrophilic alcohols. In the end, we successfully improved the conductivity of PEDOT:PSS thin films. By ethanol solvent treatment, the short-circuit current density of the perovskite solar cell based on glass/ITO/PEDOT:PSS was increased from 15.64 to 17.45 mA/cm 2 , the power conversion efficiency (PCE) reached 11.36%, which was 25% higher than the traditional structure. For flexible devices, a preliminary PCE of 9.20% was achieved.

Strong, conductive, and freezing-tolerant polyacrylamide/PEDOT:PSS/cellulose nanofibrils hydrogels for wearable strain sensors

Meng Zhang,Yaxuan Wang,Kun Liu,Yang Liu,Ting Xu,Haishun Du,Chuanling Si

Hydrogels with prominent flexibility, versatility, and high sensitivity play an important role in the design and fabrication of wearable sensors. In particular, these flexible conductive hydrogels exhibit elastic modulus that is highly compatible with human skin, demonstrating the great potential for flexible sensing. However, the preparation of high-performance hydrogel-based sensors that can restrain extreme cold conditions is still challenging. Herein, a novel anti-freezing composite hydrogel with superior conductivity based on polyacrylamide (PAM), LiCl , and PEDOT:PSS coated cellulose nanofibrils (PAM/PEDOT:PSS/CNF) is constructed. The addition of CNF increased the hydrogen bonding sites of the molecular chains in the micro, thus improving the mechanical strength and the conductivity of the hydrogel in the macro. The hydrogels achieve a high tensile strength of 0.19 MPa, compressive strength of 0.92 MPa, and dissipation energy of 41.9 kJ/m 3 . Otherwise, LiCl increases the interactions between the colloidal phase and water molecules, endowing the hydrogels with excellent freezing tolerance. Specifically, the optimized hydrogel of 45 % LiCl exhibited stable mechanical properties at −40 °C. Finally, the composite hydrogel was used to assemble flexible sensors with high sensitivity of 10.3 MPa −1 , which can detect a wide range of human movements and physiological activities.

Removal of protonic doping from PEDOT:PSS by weak base for improving aluminum solid electrolytic capacitor performance

Piao Luo,Kai Zhang,Nanjie Wu,Lanlan Wei,Shigui Peng,Qiao Fan,Tingting Luo,Yucheng Yin,Xiang Zhang,Yufei Liu,Min He,Jie Yu,Shuhao Qin

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is a promising conductive polymer material, but its acidic nature leads to device deterioration and poor long-term durability. It is usual practice to neutralise PEDOT:PSS solutions with bases, resulting in a decrease of conductivity. The causes of the decline in conductivity remain disputed and uncertain. In this study, three bases (sodium hydroxide, ammonium hydroxide, and imidazole) were employed to treat PEDOT:PSS to investigate their effects on doping level, composition, and structure. The results show that bases may dedope PEDOT:PSS by removing the proton doping from the PEDOT chain. Meanwhile, insulating PSS is removed, and the aggregated structure is optimised to ensure that conductivity is not significantly reduced. The PEDOT:PSS treated with the weak base imidazole showed the least loss of conductivity due to only a modest decrease in doping level and the greatest loss of insulating PSS. Aluminium electrolytic capacitors made using imidazole pH-adjusted solutions have a capacitance ratio of up to 98.28% and an equivalent series resistance of 26 mΩ. These findings provide a valuable reference for developing high electrical characteristics and neutral PEDOT:PSS materials.

Assembly of silver nanowires and PEDOT:PSS with hydrocellulose toward highly flexible, transparent and conductivity-stable conductors

Xu Wang,Jianhong Zhou,Ying Zhu,Wanke Cheng,Dawei Zhao,Guangwen Xu,Haipeng Yu

Improving the conductivity stability of flexible conductors has a positive impact on the working performance and service life of portable electronic devices. However, designing a conductor material with both conductivity-stable and flexible performance is still not an easy task because of the conductive network damage under large deformation or high humidity conditions. Here, we surmount this challenge by developing an interfacial assembly/encapsulation integration strategy for the construction of flexible, transparent, and conductivity-stable film. Under the synergistic effect of coordination complexation and hydrogen bonding, silver nanowires (AgNWs) are sandwiched encapsulated by regenerated cellulose film (as flexible substrate) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) nanosheets (as sealing coat). The resulting hybrid film has a robust interfacial structure and prominently stable properties. Even when subjected to harsh condition such as a high-moisture environment of 90% relative humidity and 65 °C temperature for up to 60 days, repeated bending for 500 times, peeling over 400 times or soaking in water for 30 days, the film still exhibits a high and stable conductivity, better than most previously reported values for AgNWs-based films. With this strategy as base, we demonstrate a flexible, transparent and biocompatible strain-to-electricity sensor with high working stability and performance.

Enhanced thermoelectric performances of flexible PEDOT:PSS film by synergistically tuning the ordering structure and oxidation state

Qikai Li,Qing Zhou,Long Wen,Weishu Liu

Flexible polymer thermoelectric thin film attracts wide attentions because it is compatible with the wearable electronics and e-skin. Herein, we reported an enhanced thermoelectric power factor of PEDOT:PSS from around 1 μW m −1  K −2 to 117 μW m −1  K −2 and high substrate-free strain of 20% through synergistically tuning the ordering structure and the oxidation state. An ionic liquid (EMImTCM) was used to decouple the ionic interaction between PEDOT and PSS, rearranging the morphology of structure that significantly benefit the mechanical flexibility and the electrical conductivity. The addition of L-ascorbic acid was confirmed as effective dedoping additive of PEDOT polymer that changed the oxidation state and hence boosted the thermoelectric power factor without notable sacrifice of the mechanical flexibility. Moreover, the electrical conductivity of the corresponding film maintained electrically stable (Δ R/R 0  < 0.12%) under 1000 bending cycles which indicates the great bendability. Our work demonstrated the feasibility to controllably tailor the thermoelectric and mechanical performance of the PEDOT:PSS flexible polymer thermoelectric thin film.

A low-work-function, high-conductivity PEDOT:PSS electrode for organic solar cells with a simple structure

Zaifang Li,Ying Liang,Zhicheng Zhong,Jingyu Qian,Guijie Liang,Kun Zhao,Haixin Shi,Shuming Zhong,Yanzhen Yin,Wenjing Tian

We report on a low work-function (WF), high-conductivity poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) electrode by a two-step dipping process. The first dipping into the sulfuric acid is to enhance its conductivity and the second dipping into PEI solution is to lower its work function. After the first dipping, the conductivity of PEDOT:PSS film reaches 1561   S/cm under dipping time of 1   min and the temperature of 60   °C. After dipping into sulfuric acid, the thickness of PEDOT:PSS is reduced to about half but the transmittance was lowered. After the dipping into the PEI solution, the WF of PEDOT:PSS is reduced from 4.9 to 4.0   eV. Although the conductivity were lowered slightly after treated with PEI solution, an electrode with a high conductivity of 1140   S/cm was achieved. The low WF and high-conductivity PEDOT:PSS film is used to fabricate ITO-free, metal-electrode-free and vacuum-free organic solar cells with a simple structure of glass/low-WF PEDOT:PSS/P3HT:ICBA/high WF-PEDOT:PSS, the cells display a fill factor of 61% and a power conversion efficiency of 4.0% under 100   mW/cm 2 white light illumination.

Strong, flexible, and highly conductive cellulose nanofibril/PEDOT:PSS/MXene nanocomposite films for efficient electromagnetic interference shielding

Kun Liu,Haishun Du,Wei Liu,Meng Zhang,Yaxuan Wang,Huayu Liu,Xinyu Zhang,Ting Xu,Chuanling Si

Flexible and light weight electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials with high electromagnetic shielding efficiency (SE) and excellent mechanical strength are highly demanded for wearable and portable electronics. In this work, for the first time, a freestanding and flexible cellulose nanofibril (CNF)/PEDOT:PSS/MXene (Ti3C2Tx) nanocomposite film with a ternary heterostructure was manufactured using a vacuum-assisted filtration process. The results show that compared with pure MXene films, the tensile strength of the optimized nanocomposite film increases from 8.88 MPa to 59.99 MPa, and the corresponding fracture strain increases from 0.87% to 4.60%. Intriguingly, the optimized nanocomposite film exhibited an impressive conductivity of 1903.2 S cm−1, which is among the highest values reported for MXene and cellulose-based nanocomposites. Owing to the superior conductivity and unique heterostructure, the nanocomposite film exhibits a high EMI SE value of 76.99 dB at a thickness of only 58.0 μm. Taking into account the robust mechanical properties and remarkable EMI shielding performance, the CNF/PEDOT:PSS/MXene nanocomposite film could be a prospective EMI shielding material for a variety of high-end applications.

Electrospray and Assembly of PEDOT:PSS on Silver Nanowires for Multifunctional Stretchable Electronic Membranes

Ming Li,Wei Peng,Chunfa Ye,Longqi Zhao,Jixiang Zhu,Chenhu Mei,Xiaoyan Li

Stretchable multifunctional electronic membranes are highly favored for wearable devices. In this study, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) was electrosprayed onto electrospun poly(styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene) (SEBS) triblock copolymer membranes integrated with silver nanowires (AgNWs) to create SEBS/AgNW/PEDOT electronics. Through careful control of the electrospray process, capillary forces facilitated the self-assembly of AgNWs, forming a tightly coated conductive network on the SEBS fibers, which enhances interfacial bonding and mechanoelectric stability. The SEBS/AgNW/PEDOT stretchable membrane demonstrates excellent strain-sensing capabilities, a strong Joule heating effect, and high stability. The strong interfacial interaction between AgNWs and PEDOT enhances carrier mobility, resulting in an area-specific capacitance of 52.2 mF cm–2 at a current density of 0.5 mA cm–2 and good electrochemical performance even under 50% strain. The composite membranes show great potential for applications in strain sensors, flexible heaters, and supercapacitors, offering valuable insights into the development of future wearable electronic devices.

M. Z. H. Khan,M. S. Ahommed,M. Daizy

An innovative biosensor assembly relying on glassy carbon electrodes modified with nanocomposites consisting of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) as a host matrix with functionalized gold nanoparticles (GCE/PEDOT:PSS-AuNPs) is presented for the selective and sensitive detection of xanthine (XA). The developed sensor was successfully applied for the quantification of XA in the presence of significant interferents like hypoxanthine (HXA) and uric acid (UA). Different spectroscopy and electron microscopy analyses were done to characterize the as-prepared nanocomposite. Calibration responses for the quantification of XA was linear from 5.0 × 10−8 to 1.0 × 10−5 M (R2 = 0.994), with a detection limit as low as 3.0 × 10−8 (S/N = 3). Finally, the proposed sensor was applied for the analyses of XA content in commercial fish and meat samples and satisfactory recovery percentage was obtained.
