The sizing agents of glass fiber are usually epoxy and silane coupling agents, which can't withstand the processing molding temperature of PEEK resin matrix so the interfacial interaction of PEEK matrix and glass fiber is weak. In this work, PEEK polymers with disulfide bonds, which could be converted PEEK structure in mild condition, were synthesized and used as sizing agent of glass fiber to improve the interfacial properties of the glass fiber reinforced poly ether ether ketone (PEEK/GF) composites. The results showed that the interlaminar shear strength increased from 50.96 MPa of unsized GF reinforced PEEK composites (PEEK/UGF) to 93.22 MPa of sized GF reinforced PEEK composites (PEEK/SGF), with an increase of 82.93 %; Due to the improved interfacial properties of the PEEK matrix and GF, the bending strength and modulus of the PEEK/GF composite were increased from 701.30 MPa to 40.34 GPa for PEEK/UGF to 1398.40 MPa and 50.33 GPa for PEEK/SGF, an increase of 99.02 % and 24.76 %, respectively. The mechanism of interfacial enhancement was discussed through the analysis of cross-section morphology. In addition, PEEK sizing agent also had good solvent resistance, which hindered the erosion of organic solvents and the performance retention rate of the composite's ILSS remained above 80 % after PEEK/SGF composites were treated in high temperature organic solvents.

In recent years, numerous studies have reported the application of crystalline sizing agents for the interfacial modification of carbon fiber reinforced polyether ether ketone (PEEK/CF) composites. However, the underlying mechanism by which these agents improve the interfacial properties remains unclear. Therefore, the interfacial enhancement mechanism of PEEK/CF composites using crystalline PEEK sizing agents was explored from a microscopic perspective, specifically focusing on interfacial crystallization in this study. Firstly, the crystallization behavior of PEEK on the CF surfaces modified with varying concentrations of crystalline PEEK sizing agents was investigated using polarized optical microscope (POM). It was observed that the sizing agent could induce the formation of PEEK transcrystallinity (TC) on the CF surface, with the 1 wt% concentration of sizing agent resulting in the densest crystal nuclei. The lamellar morphology and molecular orientation of the TC layers were further analyzed. Correspondingly, higher interfacial shear strength (IFSS) was observed in PEEK/CF composites with denser TC structures. Furthermore, the film tensile tests and chemical solvent erosion experiments were conducted to investigate the distribution of weak interfacial phases. It was found that the TC layer did not introduce new “weak interfacial phases” into the composites and exhibited superior resistance to solvent erosion. Finally, the mechanism of action of crystalline PEEK sizing agents was discussed. It was proposed that PEEK molecules from the sizing agent could effectively fill the voids at the interface of the composites which were caused by the low mobility of high-viscosity PEEK resin matrix. This led to an increase in nucleation sites on the CF surface and the formation of a denser TC layer.

Background The efficient and timely determination of polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs, primarily nobiletin and tangeretin) and flavanone glycosides (primarily hesperidin) in Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (CRP) is of paramount importance for the production of CRP and the evaluation of its efficacy. Conventional analytical methods including chromatography-based approaches commonly provide high sensitivity and selectivity, but require bulky equipment and complicated procedures performed by professional technicians and are thus inconvenient in practical applications. Therefore, there is a clear need for portable and miniaturized sensing platforms that can rapidly and simultaneously detect PMFs and hesperidin in CRP product. Results A state-of-the-art three-dimensional porous graphene electrode was first fabricated by direct laser scribing of a poly(ether-ether-ketone) (PEEK) film for electrocatalysis of nobiletin , tangeretin and hesperidin . Kinetic analysis was conducted to investigate the reaction mechanisms of these three flavonoids at such prepared PEEK-laser induced graphene (PEEK-LIG) electrodes. Since the as-prepared PEEK-LIG electrodes exhibited high electrocatalytic efficiency towards these three flavonoids , a portable electrochemical sensing platform assembled with a smartphone, a miniatured electrochemical workstation, and an integrated PEEK-LIG microchip was developed. Consequently, the developed portable electrochemical sensing platforms exhibited great sensitivity and low detection limits for both PMFs and hesperidin. More importantly, tests conducted on real CRP extract samples demonstrated that the developed portable electrochemical sensing platform exhibited high validity, high reliability, as well as excellent reproducibility. Significance This is the inaugural report on the portable and simultaneous determination of PMFs and hesperidin in the pericarp of Citrus Reticulata , which may be utilized for differentiating CRP products. Furthermore, the portable and powerful electrochemical sensing platforms developed could also potentially be applied for a wide range of analytes, thanks to their simple and rapid fabrication and determination processes.

Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) is a widely used material for friction pairs due to its excellent mechanical strength, good wear resistance, and chemical inertness. However, some modifications are necessary when PEEK is used as a water-lubricated friction pair. In this study, a novel sulfonation method was developed to design a water-lubricated friction pair with ultralow friction, good wear resistance, and high loading capacity. PEEK powders were sulfonated using ClSO 3 H and sintered to form bulk plastic. The sulfonated PEEK (SPEEK) plastic exhibited good tribological properties. At a low sliding speed, the friction coefficient was smaller than 0.02 when a 3 wt% NaCl solution was used as the lubricant. The order of magnitude of the wear rate was as low as 10 −8 mm 3 /(N·m). The mechanism of friction reduction was mainly hydration lubrication. The negatively charged −SO 3 − groups on the friction pair can adsorb hydrated Na + cations by electrostatic interactions. These hydrated Na + cations have a high load capacity and low shearing resistance. The ultralow wear mechanism observed in this study is possibly due to ultralow friction properties of the friction pairs prepared through the proposed sulfonation and thermoforming procedures.

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a potential bone repair material because of its stable chemical and good mechanical properties. However, the biological inertness of PEEK limits its clinical application. Sr 2+ has multi biological functions, including promoting bone formation and blood vessel regeneration and inhibiting inflammation. In this paper, PEEK was modified with Sr 2+ with the purpose to construct PEEK bone graft material with triple functions of osteogenesis, angiogenesis, and anti-inflammatory. The results showed that Sr-modified PEEK could stably release Sr 2+ for a long time in the PBS solution, and indeed could promote the proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts, promote angiogenesis, and inhibit inflammation. Therefore, it is believed that this multifunctional PEEK with Sr 2+ should show great promise for clinical applications in bone repair.

Water-lubricated bearings working at low velocity and high contact pressures face critical tribological challenges, especially the thinning and failure of the hydrodynamic water film leads to the direct contact of surface asperities, resulting in severe wear and friction noise. To solve these issues, this study designs an innovative hydrogel-microencapsulated polyether ether ketone (PEEK) composite through the combination of hydrogel microcapsules into the PEEK matrix. This water lubricated composite achieves a 64 % reduction in the coefficient of friction and a one-order-of-magnitude decrease in the wear rate, significantly enhancing the polymer's lubrication performance under severe operating conditions. The mechanism behind the lubrication enhanced performance is attributed to the in-situ formation of hydrogel lubricating films on the PEEK surface. This work proposes an innovative ‘rupture-grow’ lubricating strategy for developing polymer-based bearing materials to address critical tribological challenges.

Open tubular ion chromatography (OTIC) offers a lightweight, low-pressure and efficient platform for on-site ion analysis. Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is an attractive column substrate because of its mechanical strength, chemical resistance and thermal stability, yet conventional sulfuric-acid sulfonation limits ion-exchange capacity and requires long preparation times. Here, a mixed methanesulfonic and sulfuric acid reagent followed by acetone rinsing was used to streamline the sulfonation process, producing a roughened inner surface with higher functional group density. The optimized 25 μm i.d. PEEK capillaries achieved a cation-exchange capacity of 2.5 ± 0.1 peq/mm 2 , roughly eight times higher than that from single-acid treatment. The latex-coated columns had an anion-exchange capacity of 20.0 ± 0.8 peq/mm 2 and enabled baseline separation of perchlorate within 5 min using 6 mM sodium salicylate as the eluent. When integrated with a nonsuppressed OTIC system and electromembrane extraction, the method exhibited high reproducibility (RSD < 3%), a quantitation limit of 0.2 μM, and recoveries of 87.6-114.9% in environmental samples, confirming its reliability and sensitivity for perchlorate analysis.

The repair of critical-sized cranial defects resulting from trauma, congenital malformations, or surgery remains a significant clinical challenge. Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a commonly used material for cranial defect repair in clinical practice. However, its application is severely limited by drawbacks such as poor structural adaptability, bioinertness, and insufficient osseointegration, which significantly compromise clinical outcomes. In this study, we biomimicked the structure and composition of natural bone to fabricate a biomimetic PEEK/hydroxyapatite (HA) scaffold via 3D printing strategy. This scaffold exhibits a stochastic lattice structure and mechanical properties similar to natural bone, capable of sustained release of calcium and phosphate ions. An in vitro co-culture study with bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) confirmed that the biomimetic scaffold promotes cell proliferation and enhances the expression of osteogenesis-related proteins and genes. In a rat model with a critical-sized cranial defect (8 mm diameter), the biomimetic PEEK/HA scaffold demonstrated excellent capability in inducing bone regeneration and promoting osseointegration. This research provides a viable strategy for the repair and functional reconstruction of clinical critical-sized cranial defects.

Hydroxyl- and amino- functionalized carbon fibers (CF―OH and CF―NH 2 ) were prepared by surface oxidation with an acid mixture (H 2 SO 4 :HNO 3 of 3:1 v / v ) followed by grafting with ethylenediamine. The functionalized CFs were sized with a sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) sizing agent to prepare CF―OH―SPEEK and CF―NH 2 ―SPEEK materials. The effect of surface functionalization on the surface properties of the CFs and their interfacial properties in PEEK matrix composites were investigated. Results showed that the content of polar functional groups and wettability of the CFs increased significantly after surface functionalization. Chemical reactions between the modified CFs and the sizing agent, improved the interfacial adhesion between them. The interfacial shear strengths of CF―OH―SPEEK and CF―NH 2 ―SPEEK reinforced PEEK matrix composites were increased by 6.2% and 14.0%, respectively, compared with that of the composites reinforced with desized-SPEEK CFs. The surface functionalization helps improve the interfacial adhesion of thermoplastic-coated CF/PEEK composites.

To address the critical impact of temperature fluctuations on precision, stability, and friction coefficients (COF) in fluid machinery (e.g., pumps, compressors, motors), a carbon dots-embedded photoluminescent composite coating (CDs@PEEK) is developed for simultaneous non-contact temperature sensing and enhanced tribological performance on equipment surfaces. The CDs@PEEK coating exhibits temperature-responsive fluorescence, characterized by a linear intensity decrease from 50 to 120 °C with a sensitivity of 0.769 % °C −1 and excellent reproducibility of 98.01 % over five cycles. Additionally, it demonstrates superior tribological performance, achieving a lower COF (0.169 ± 0.004) compared to PEEK (0.178 ± 0.008) and stainless steel (0.335 ± 0.005), along with a reduced wear rate of 0.00548 ± 0.00010 mm 2 –4.0 % lower than PEEK and 64.6 % lower than stainless steel—indicating significantly enhanced wear resistance. The coating keeps stable fluorescence and temperature sensing after repeated heating, rubbing, and boiling. CDs@PEEK serves as a multifunctional coating for wear resistance and visual temperature monitoring, promising for smart fluid machinery.

Superhydrophobic surfaces generally encounter substantial challenges due to their weak stability when subjected to harsh environments. Specifically, the delicate micro-nano structures present on these surfaces are susceptible to external destruction. Given the robust mechanical characteristics and chemical stability of polyether ether ketone (PEEK), ultra-stable superhydrophobic PEEK surfaces were developed using template replication and chemical modification methods, achieving a water contact angle (WCA) of 159.6 ± 1.4° and a water rolling angle (WRA) of 3.7 ± 0.6°. The stable superhydrophobicity is primarily attributed to the synergistic effect of the robust arrayed micro-nano structures and the stably bonded fluorine long chains. Notably, the superhydrophobic PEEK surfaces demonstrate remarkable durability. They could maintain satisfactory superhydrophobicity even after 120 sandpaper abrasion cycles, 600 sharp steel blade scraping cycles, 10 L of water impact, 24 h of ultrasonic destruction, 52 weeks of ageing, 7 days of corrosive reagent damage, 7 days of UV irradiation, etc. Moreover, these fabricated superhydrophobic PEEK surfaces also exhibit robust antifouling and self-cleaning properties. This ultra-stable superhydrophobic PEEK surface is of significant importance for efficient antifouling of biomedical and aerospace in harsh environments.

Additive manufacturing of poly ether ether ketone (PEEK) is increasingly used to produce complex three-dimensional (3D) products, but controlling interlayer performance remains challenging. To address this, we synthesized a series of rigid fluorene-containing amorphous polymers by systematically modulating the molar ratio of resorcinol to bisphenol fluorene with varying compatibility with PEEK. These polymers were then blended with PEEK to investigate the compatibility effects on interlayer properties. A relationship among interlayer strength and the diffusion and entanglement of polymer chains was established. Isothermal crystallization studies revealed that blending with amorphous polymers extends the crystallization time of PEEK and enhances interlayer healing, thereby improving interlayer strength. Atomic force microscopy-infrared tests confirmed the accumulation and diffusion of amorphous and partially compatible fluorene-containing polymers at the interface of the blends, which enables the best-performing blends to have three times the interlayer strength of pure PEEK. These findings provide valuable insights into the molecular chain dynamics during printing, supporting the development of materials with optimized interlayer properties.
