Enhancement of photocatalytic decomposition of perfluorooctanoic acid on CeO2/In2O3

Fang Jiang,Haitao Zhao,Huan Chen,Chenmin Xu,Jian Chen

CeO2-doped indium oxide photocatalysts (xCeO2/In2O3) with various CeO2 doping amounts were synthesized and systematically characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-vis spectra, photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) and photocurrent measurements. The as-obtained xCeO2/In2O3 photocatalysts were used in photocatalytic degradation of PFOA for the first time and much higher photocatalytic activity of xCeO2/In2O3 than CeO2 and In2O3 was obtained under UV light irradiation. The excellent photocatalytic activity of 0.86% CeO2/In2O3 could be mainly derived from effective inhibition of recombination of photo-induced electron-holes caused by the charge transfer between CeO2 and In2O3. Moreover, the 0.86% CeO2/In2O3 catalyst showed excellent photocatalytic stability in cycling runs for the photocatalytic degradation of PFOA, providing a great potential of CeO2/In2O3 catalysts for PFOA treatment.

TiO2 quantum dots loaded sulfonated graphene aerogel for effective adsorption-photocatalysis of PFOA

Chao Zhu,Jinli Xu,Shuang Song,Jun Wang,Yungui Li,Renlan Liu,Yi Shen

With the pollution of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) became increasingly serious, the researches focused on removal of PFASs by adsorption-photocatalysis method has attracted considerable attention. To make the catalyst TiO 2 disperse uniformly as quantum dots onto hydrophobic surface which was liable to attract perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), the surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were used in this work, which not only connected the hydrophilic TiCl 3 to the hydrophobic sulfonated graphene (SG) nanosheets, but also behaved as the molecular template for controlled nucleation and growth of the nanostructured TiO 2 . After 3D SG-TiO 2 QD nanosheets were fabricated, a series of 3D SG-TiO 2 QD aerogels were self-assembled by ice-template. TiO 2 uniformly distributed on the surface of SG aerogel at QD size level (2–3 nm) and the size of TiO 2 could be effectively regulated by concentration of SDS. Compared with aggregated TiO 2 material, 3D SG-TiO 2 QD aerogels owned higher adsorption and photocatalytic performance. Benefiting from the hydrophobic surface of 3D SG as well as dispersed TiO 2 QDs, 3D SG-TiO 2 QD could enrich PFOA instantaneously (0.0381/s) and photocatalytic decomposed them effectively (1.898 E −4 /s). PFOA degradation by hole and hydroxyl radicals proceeded via a stepwise mechanism. The column made of 3D SG-TiO 2 QD could remove PFOA persistently in cycles of permeation. 3D SG-TiO 2 QD possessed powerful adsorption-photocatalytic decomposition capability of PFOA and steady reusability performance. The present work highlights the individual roles and synergistic effect of TiO 2 QD and 3D SG for effectively removing PFOA.

Insight into mechanochemical destruction of PFOA by BaTiO3: An electron-dominated reduction process

Li Li,Ruoning Guo,Jie Gao,Jie Liu,Zhiwei Zhao,Xin Sheng,JunYu Fan,Fuyi Cui

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a representative persistent organic pollutant and its disposal by mechanochemical (MC) technology emerges in recent years. However, degradation mechanism of PFOA especially rupture of C−F bonds during MC process is still unclear. Therefore, we innovatively employed barium titanate as co-milling reagent in MC system to disclose an electron-dominated reduction process. By stimulating piezoelectric effect of BaTiO 3 under MC impact, free electrons were generated. The results implied more than 95.00% degradation and 60.00% defluorination efficiency were obtained after 6 h′ ball milling. DPPH• was used as probe to confirm the existence of piezo-excited electrons, which were further verified to be major reactive species by atmosphere experiments. Thus, PFOA destruction was dominated by reduction process, characterizing by breakage of C−F bonds induced by electrons. Accordingly, the fate of organic fluorides was explored and BaF 2 was identified as final product. The cleavage of carboxyl group initiated PFOA decomposition, following by successive removal of CF 2 groups and elimination of F − . Moreover, the practical experiments and reusable trials implied promising application of this method. Overall, this paper provides a novel perspective for reductive decomposition of PFOA by MC technology and reveals the major role of electrons during reaction process.

Coupling PFOA defluorination with Fe0-mediated CO2 methanation: Metabolic pathways in PET microplastic niches

Delin Yin,Lei Chen,Junmei Chen,Jin Yuan,Jianguo Liu,Xin Kong

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a persistent emerging contaminant that has attracted increasing attention due to its recalcitrance and toxicity. This study demonstrates the efficacy of a zero-valent iron (Fe 0 ) mediated biogas upgrading system for simultaneous PFOA degradation and methane production, with PET microplastics playing a secondary role in the degradation process. At a PFOA dosage of 0.3 mg/L, defluorination efficiencies ranging from 21.22% to 31.98% were achieved after five biogas upgrading cycles (approximately 25 days), accompanied by enhanced CO 2 methanation performance (ultimate CH 4 content >95%). At a PFOA concentration of 10 mg/L, analysis of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) revealed a significant decrease in protein content within the reactors. Molecular docking models and reactive oxygen species (ROS) analyses suggested that the binding of PFOA to specific amino acid residues mitigated its cytotoxicity. The microbial community in the Fe 0 -mediated reactor was dominated by Methanosaeta , a strictly acetoclastic methanogen. Furthermore, metagenomic analysis indicated the upregulation of key genes associated with methanogenesis and fluoride transport under Fe 0 mediation. Characterization of infrared spectrum and fluorinated metabolic intermediates suggested that PFOA degradation proceeded primarily via stepwise decarboxylation pathways. This study not only confirms the roles of Fe 0 and PET microplastics in PFOA removal but also reveals the synergistic metabolic coupling between defluorination and methanogenesis, therby elucidating the mechanisms of Fe 0 -enhanced PFOA degradation.

Integrative network toxicology analysis reveals mechanistic links between PFOA exposure and male reproductive dysfunction

Zhou Tao,Zhang Xinyu,Yang Jinghong,Wang Juan

Objective To systematically investigate the molecular mechanisms linking perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) to male reproductive health outcomes within a network toxicology framework, and to compare shared pathways across erectile dysfunction (ED), male infertility, and testicular dysfunction. Methods PFOA associated targets were identified using CTD, SwissTargetPrediction, and TargetNet, while disease related genes were collected from GeneCards. Protein–protein interaction (PPI) networks were constructed using STRING and analyzed in Cytoscape to identify hub genes. GO and KEGG enrichment analyses were performed to characterize biological processes and pathways affected by PFOA. Molecular docking was used to assess binding affinities between PFOA and key target proteins. In addition, preliminary in vitro experiments were performed to examine the expression patterns of selected candidate genes following PFOA exposure. Results A total of 105 PFOA related genes were identified. Intersection analyses yielded 15, 25, and 42 genes associated with ED, male infertility, and testicular dysfunction, respectively. Ten core genes (AR, ESR1, BCL2, NOS1, NOS2, NOS3, ACE, SIRT1, TLR9, SHBG) were shared across all phenotypes and showed high connectivity in the PPI network. Enrichment analyses indicated involvement in reproductive system development, hormone and nuclear receptor regulation, calcium and nitric oxide (NO) signaling, mitochondrial and redox processes, and apoptosis and inflammation related pathways. Preliminary in vitro experiments further validated the expression changes of selected key genes. Conclusions This study identifies key molecular targets and pathways potentially mediating PFOA associated male reproductive toxicity. The results support a working hypothesis that PFOA associated male reproductive toxicity may involve altered androgen estrogen receptor signaling, NO related pathways, and apoptosis/inflammation associated regulation. These findings provide a theoretical basis for future mechanistic validation and risk assessment.

Dual-frequency ultrasound superposition modes: Persulfate activation and PFOA defluorination in water and soil

Yujing You,Hongyu Zeng,Guochun Lv,Dionissios Mantzavinos,Xiaoyang Zhu,Lili Lin,Shihuai Deng,Fei Shen,Jing Yao,Yongjia Lei

In the dual-frequency ultrasound (DFUS) coupling persulfate (PS) (DFUS/PS) system, acoustic-wave superposition can synergistically activate PS and promote the defluorination of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). However, the influence of different superposition modes on PFOA defluorination remains unclear. In this study, four superposition modes—probe-bath, orthogonal, opposite, and dual-probe—were systematically evaluated in both aqueous and soil matrices. The probe-bath mode achieved the highest PFOA defluorination rate, reaching 69.4% at a power allocation ratio of 1/4, while maintaining soil integrity. Sound-field characterization revealed that the probe-bath mode enhanced cavitation intensity by increasing the amplitude of the synthesized wave, which intensified the chemical effects that served as the primary driver of PFOA defluorination, whereas mechanical effects provided auxiliary support. This mode also promoted constructive interference and exhibited the highest sound intensity with the largest coverage area, and achieved superior energy utilization efficiency. These findings provide mechanistic insights into mode-dependent DFUS/PS activation and offer practical guidance for optimizing ultrasound-assisted remediation of PFAS-contaminated water and soil.

PFOA and its substitutes disrupt fatty acid metabolism and impair erythrocyte homeostasis in zebrafish

Yuanyuan Wu,Weiqiang Sun,Xiyue Liu,Zhonghua Fan,Lin Cheng,Ying Yang,Li Wang,Hui Liu

The accumulation of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and its substitutes hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HFPO-DA, trade name Gen-X) and hexafluoropropylene trimer acid (HFPO-TA), which are widely used synthetic chemicals, may pose significant health risks across species. This study systematically investigated the multi-dimensional effects of PFOA and its substitutes on fatty acid metabolic processes and erythrocyte survival through bioinformatic and metabolomics analysis, complemented by a variety of zebrafish exposure experiments, including Oil Red O staining (ORO staining), Nile red staining (NR staining), 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane (DPPP) and reactive oxygen species (ROS), as well as inflammation, apoptosis and gene expression assays. PFOA and its substitutes significantly disrupted fatty acid oxidation degradation and synthesis, by interfering with the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) signaling pathway, leading to lipid accumulation in zebrafish. In addition, PFOA and HFPO-TA reduced the number of erythrocytes in zebrafish through excessive generation of ROS and abnormal activation of the tp53 gene. Gene expression analysis further confirmed that the expression of genes related to fatty acid metabolism, inflammation and apoptosis regulated by PPARα and its target genes were significantly upregulated. This study revealed that PFOA and its substitutes exert multi-dimensional effects on fatty acid metabolism and erythrocyte survival in zebrafish through the activation of PPARα, providing new perspectives for understanding the toxicity mechanisms of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)

Dual-Redox-Enabled Photocatalytic Degradation of PFOA over a MIL-125-NH2/rGO Composite

Shen Xiaotie,Li Ruiyi,Chen Baoliang,Zhu Xiaoying

The degradation of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) remained challenging due to the extraordinary stability of its carbon–fluorine bonds, which were resistant to conventional photocatalytic processes. In this work, a metal–organic framework (MOF), MIL-125-NH 2 , was grown in situ on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) to form nanocomposites (RMGs), enabling rapid PFOA degradation via an integrated dual-redox pathway without the addition of sacrificial agents. Under UV irradiation, the RMG composite achieved an 80.2% degradation of PFOA (20 mg L –1 ) within 4 h, corresponding to an apparent rate constant of 0.405 h –1 , and exhibited competitive degradation productivity among reported photocatalytic systems operating without external oxidants or sacrificial agents. PFOA degradation exhibited pronounced pH dependence with the RMG composite delivering optimal performance at pH 5. Moreover, the RMG catalyst showed excellent stability and reusability. In natural water matrices, the RMG composite achieved approximately 70% PFOA degradation within 10 h. The MOF/rGO heterojunction promoted directional charge separation, enabling photogenerated holes to trigger carbon–carbon bond cleavage and stepwise shortening of perfluorinated intermediates, while electrons were efficiently transferred to PFOA to induce hydrogen–fluorine atom exchange. Overall, this study highlights the pivotal role of synergistic redox integration in enabling efficient PFOA remediation in aqueous systems.

Highly efficient electrochemical degradation of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) by F-doped Ti/SnO2 electrode

Bo Yang,Chaojin Jiang,Gang Yu,Qiongfang Zhuo,Shubo Deng,Jinhua Wu,Hong Zhang

The novel F-doped Ti/SnO 2 electrode prepared by SnF 4 as the single-source precursor was used for electrochemical degradation of aqueous perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). Higher oxidation reactivity and significantly longer service life were achieved for Ti/SnO 2 –F electrode than Ti/SnO 2 – X ( X   =   Cl, Br, I, or Sb) electrode, which could decomposed over 99% of PFOA (50   mL of 100   mg   L −1 ) within 30-min electrolysis. The property of Ti/SnO 2 –F electrode and its electrooxidation mechanism were investigated by XRD, SEM–EDX, EIS, LSV, and interfacial resistance measurements. We propose that the similar ionic radii of F and O as well as strong electronegativity of F caused its electrochemical stability with high oxygen evolution potential (OEP) and smooth surface to generate weakly adsorbed OH. The preparation conditions of electrode were also optimized including F doping amount, calcination temperature, and dip coating times, which revealed the formation process of electrode. Additionally, the major mineralization product, F − , and low concentration of shorter chain perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) were detected in solution. So the reaction pathway of PFOA electrooxidation was proposed by intermediate analysis. These results demonstrate that Ti/SnO 2 –F electrode is promising for highly efficient treatment of PFOA in wastewater.

Enhanced adsorption of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) from water by granular activated carbon supported magnetite nanoparticles

Jianhong Xu,Zuwen Liu,Dongye Zhao,Naiyun Gao,Xie Fu

A new composite material (Fe 3 O 4 @GAC, Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles loaded on a commercial granular activated carbon (GAC)) was prepared through a facile hydrothermal process at controlled Fe 2+ :Fe 3+ molar ratios in air. Fe 3 O 4 @GAC was thoroughly characterized and tested for adsorption of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in water. Fe 3 O 4 @GAC(2:1), prepared at an Fe 2+ :Fe 3+ molar ratio of 2:1, showed the best PFOA removal and offered 28.8% higher adsorption capacity than the parent GAC at final pH 4.0. The enhanced adsorption of PFOA was attributed to concurrent hydrophobic, electrostatic and complexation interactions between PFOA, GAC and Fe 3 O 4 . GAC in the composite played an important role for PFOA adsorption. The presence of Ca 2+ ions (10 mM) at final pH 5.0–10.0 more than doubled the PFOA equilibrium uptake of PFOA by Fe 3 O 4 @GAC(2:1) due to the calcium bridging effect between PFOA and the Si-OH or Fe-OH groups in Fe 3 O 4 @GAC(2:1), and because of the Ca 2+ -modification induced formation of PFOA hemi-micelles on the surface or in the relatively large pores (2.27 nm) of Fe 3 O 4 @GAC(2:1). Fe 3 O 4 @GAC(2:1) was amenable to efficient regeneration using a mixture of NaOH solution and methanol. Fe 3 O 4 @GAC holds the potential to be used as a simple and low-cost adsorbent for enhanced adsorption of PFOA, especially in waters of high hardness and alkalinity.

Electrostatic Effect-Induced Eu/UiO-66 MOF Regulation for Rapid and Selective Recognition of PFOA

Yong Li,Dongping Fang,Chao Yang,Xike Tian,Yulun Nie,Jianbo Shi

The detection of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in the environment is critical due to their adverse health effects, but it remains challenging because of the high cost and technical complexity of standard analytical methods. We developed a series of rare earth-based bimetallic metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) for the sensitive and efficient fluorescence detection of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). By systematically modulating the ligand functional groups with amino (−NH2), hydroxyl (−OH), and fluorine (–F) moieties, the influence of ligand electronegativity on the PFOA recognition performance was evaluated. The experimental results demonstrated that the local electrostatic potential of the MOFs, governed by the functional groups, is a critical factor in determining the PFOA binding affinity and fluorescence sensitivity. Eu/UiO-66-NH2 demonstrated the highest sensitivity and selectivity for rapid fluorescence detection of PFOA, which was due to its strong positive electrostatic potential to facilitate binding via electrostatic attraction and synergistic hydrogen bonding. PFOA concentrations in actual water samples can also be determined by Eu/UiO-66-NH2. These findings provide theoretical insights and experimental support for the functional design of MOF-based sensors, paving the way for the sensitive and selective detection of PFASs.

Superhydrophobicity-driven interfacial enrichment and SERS detection of PFOA on nano-Cu modified Ag foam

Xiaoya Yuan,Lei Ouyang,Zhou Song,Xuelin Dong,Zhenli Zhu,Qin Shuai,Shenghong Hu

Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) present a serious risk to ecosystems and human health, underscoring the need for highly sensitive detection methods. Existing analytical approaches often lack the portability and rapid response required for on-site screening, and conventional surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates exhibit limited affinity toward hydrophobic PFAS molecules. To overcome these limitations, we designed a superhydrophobic nano-Cu modified Ag foam that integrates hydrophobic enrichment with specific metal-carboxylate coordination for effective perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) capture and detection. The critical role of Cu 2+ as a bridging site for selective PFOA adsorption was elucidated. This design achieves a remarkably low detection limit of 0.1 μg L −1 for PFOA and enables discrimination between different PFAS categories. Moreover, it maintains excellent SERS activity after two months of storage, effectively addressing the issue of facile oxidation of Cu. The substrate was successfully applied to detect PFOA in various real water samples, demonstrating its potential as a practical and powerful platform for environmental PFAS monitoring.
