Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) contain a diverse range of organic groups that present a serious threat to the ecological environment and human health. However, their actual fate in rivers remains only partially understood. The occurrence, distribution, and risk assessment of PPCPs in aquatic systems have received global research attention. However, few studies have focused on the Longgang River in Shenzhen City, South China. This study was the first to simultaneously identify and quantify five PPCPs residues in the mainstream of Longgang River. All surface water and sediment samples were analyzed by solid-phase extraction (SPE) and high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). The five assessed PPCPs were all detected in the mainstream of the Longgang River, with sediment concentrations much higher than water concentrations. Fluconazole and Triclosan were the dominant PPCPs in water and sediments, with maximum concentrations of 55.86 ng/L and 19.24 μg/kg, respectively. Others were present at mean concentrations below 40 ng/L in water and 15 μg/kg in sediments. The recovery rates of the five PPCPs ranged from 57.2% to 110.6%, which were within the limits of reliability. These results demonstrate that sewage treatment plants exhibited different degrees of removal effects for the five PPCPs and showed a natural attenuation trend along the Longgang River for all PPCPs except carbamazepine. The trace amounts of individual PPCPs residues in the river posed a low risk to aquatic organisms in the mainstream, although the potential risks created by low dose exposure and bioaccumulation of PPCPs should be considered.

The abatement of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), including carbamazepine (CBZ), acetaminophen (ACP) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX), by zero-valent iron (Fe°) activated peroxydisulfate (PDS) system (Fe°/PDS) in pure water and groundwater was investigated. The removal rates of CBZ, ACP and SMX were 85.4%, 100% and 73.1%, respectively, within 10 min by Fe°/PDS in pure water. SO 4 •− , • OH and O 2 •− were identified in the Fe°/PDS system, and O 2 •− was indicated to play an important role in the ACP degradation. The degradation of PPCPs increased with increasing dosages of Fe° and PDS or with decreasing pH and initial PPCP concentrations. Interestingly, the degradation of PPCPs by Fe°/PDS was significantly enhanced in groundwater compared with that in pure water, which was partially attributed to SO 4 2− and Cl − . The first-order constants of CBZ, ACP and SMX increased from 0.021, 0.242 and 0.013 min− 1 to 0.239, 2.536 and 0.259 min −1 , and to 0.172, 1.516 and 0.197 min −1 , respectively, with increasing the concentrations of SO 4 2− and Cl − to 100 mg/L and 10 mg/L, respectively. This study firstly reports the unexpected enhancement of groundwater matrix on the degradation of micropollutants by Fe°/PDS, demonstrating that Fe°/PDS can be an efficient technology for groundwater remediation.

Oxygen-bridged S-scheme Bi 2 WO 6 /FeOCl achieves 93% DCF and 91% CBZ removal. • Self-Fenton/PMS synergy generates multiple ROS (SO 4 ·− , ·OH, 1 O 2 , ·O 2 − , h + ). • System sustains >85% removal in real waters and > 90% in 300-min flow test. The built-in electric field at oxygen-bridge-connected heterojunctions is a key driving force for regulating S-scheme charge separation and PMS activation. To address the challenge of removing persistent pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) from water, a Fe–O–W/Fe–O–Bi double‑oxygen-bridge interface was precisely engineered using an in-situ hydrothermal growth strategy, leading to the successful preparation of a direct S-scheme Bi 2 WO 6 /FeOCl heterojunction. The built-in electric field within the interface significantly promotes the directional separation of charges, enhancing light absorption and carrier utilization efficiency. The optimal Bi 2 WO 6 /FeOCl ratio (3:1) efficiently degrades DCF and CBZ in a visible light/PMS system, exhibiting good activity in the pH range of 5–7 with a moderate decrease at pH 9, along with strong resistance to water matrices. The system sustains >90% removal for 300 min in a continuous-flow reactor. Radical trapping and EPR confirm synergistic interactions among SO 4 ·− , ·OH, ·O 2 − , 1 O 2 , and h + , further enhanced by the self-Fenton effect. DFT and LC-MS analyses elucidate the transformation pathways of DCF and CBZ. TOC tests verify that only partial mineralization is achieved under current conditions, and toxicity assessments confirm significantly reduced ecological risks of residual intermediates. This study provides an efficient and stable photocatalytic-PMS synergistic system for PPCPs-contaminated water remediation.

To achieve efficient degradation of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), the g-C₃N₄-WO₃@FePc system was in-situ constructed using a calcination method, with g-C₃N₄-WO₃ serving as the support matrix. This approach effectively resolved the issue of FePc aggregation and self-degradation in aqueous environments. The g-C₃N₄-WO₃@FePc catalyst demonstrated excellent performance in the photo-Fenton degradation of acetaminophen (ACE), achieving over 90% degradation within just 20 minutes under simulated sunlight. The catalyst's superior performance is attributed to the synergistic effects between the reaction centers. The π-π conjugation between g-C₃N₄-WO₃ (the photocatalytic center) and FePc (the Fenton catalytic center) facilitates the transfer of photo-generated electrons from the photocatalytic center to the Fenton catalytic center, enabling rapid regeneration of Fe(II) and generating a significant amount of active species (•O₂⁻ and 1 O₂). To validate the stability of the catalytic system, factors such as ionic impurities and water types affecting performance were investigated and analyzed. Additionally, cell toxicity and antimicrobial tests were conducted to evaluate the toxicity of ACE degradation intermediates and the ecological stability of g-C₃N₄-WO₃@FePc, revealing its potential for practical wastewater treatment applications.

In this work, a nickel-cobalt bimetallic organic framework (NiCo-MOF) was introduced as an intermediate layer to synthesize a Pd/NiCo-MOF/Nickel foam composite electrode, which was applied for electrocatalytic hydrodechlorination (ECH) of chlorinated pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). The introduction of the NiCo-MOF structure dramatically improved the catalytic activity compared with the common Pd/Nickel foam electrode. Combined with transmission electron microscope and X-ray absorption fine structure analysis, catalyst on Pd/NiCo-MOF/Nickel foam surface had smaller particle size. The removal of the Pd/NiCo-MOF/Nickel foam electrode for chloramphenicol (CAP) reached more than 95 % at 40 min, while the removal of the Pd/Nickel foam electrode was only approximately 55 %. In this study, the active atomic hydrogen (H*) adsorbed on the Pd and NiCo-MOF structures is the critical active species to remove chlorinated PPCPs by Pd/NiCo-MOF/Nickel foam electrode. Density functional theory (DFT) was used to calculate and investigate the adsorption strength of the composite electrode structure for CAP, the product and H*. This work provided a new method to achieve higher catalytic performance and reactivity operability and longevity of catalytic materials through the synergism of a NiCo-MOF interlayer with Pd particles.

The contamination of wastewater by pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) poses a significant threat to environmental and human health, necessitating innovative and efficient purification strategies. Photocatalysis is a promising approach for PPCPs degradation, however, optimizing solid-liquid interfacial adsorption and charge transfer remains a major challenge. Here, we introduce a novel europium (Eu) single-atom anchored TiO 2 photocatalyst, which simultaneously enhances adsorption capacity, light absorption range, and charge transfer efficiency, leading to unprecedented photocatalytic performance. Experimental and theoretical investigations reveal that Eu decoration lowers the adsorption potential of TiO 2 , significantly improving its ability to adsorb O 2 , H 2 O, and pharmaceuticals, the typical PPCPs. The introduction of 5d electrons from Eu creates a donor level below the conduction band, extending TiO 2 ’s absorption from the ultraviolet to the visible spectrum while improving adsorption and accelerating charge transfer at the solid-liquid interface. The yield of superoxide radicals rises significantly, while the reaction probability for pharmaceutical molecules is raised through the strong surface attraction. Consequently, the pharmaceutical-degradation efficiency increases by up to 27-fold under visible light and 3.9-fold under UV irradiation. This work presents a paradigm shift in photocatalytic water purification, offering a scalable and efficient strategy for tackling PPCPs contamination in wastewater. By unveiling a new mechanism for single-atom-enhanced photocatalysis, this study provides critical insights into the design of next-generation catalysts for sustainable water treatment.

Nanofiltration (NF) membranes show great potential for advanced water treatment, especially for trace organic pollutant removal. The removal efficiency of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and environmental estrogenic hormones (EEHs) by positively charged hollow fiber NF membranes (PEI-NF) were evaluated. The separation properties were evaluated by changing the operating pressure, temperature, ionic strength, and cation species. A relationship between the physicochemical characteristics of the pharmaceuticals and the NF membrane retention behavior was established. The results showed that the rejection rates of the PEI-NF membrane for the selected PPCPs and EEHs ranged from 81 to ~ 91.26%. For positively (negatively) charged pharmaceutical molecules, the electrostatic repulsion (attraction) effect and steric hindrance were the dominant rejection mechanisms of the PEI-NF membrane. For neutral pharmaceutical molecules, in addition to the size sieving effect, the hydration-induced size increase of hydrophilic substances improved the rejection rates. Both the molecular structure and diffusion coefficient of pharmaceutical molecules influenced their rejection by the PEI-NF membrane to a certain extent. Moreover, the PEI-NF membrane showed a high removal effect for PPCPs and EEHs in water samples from actual tap water plants.

The occurrence and removal rate of 52 typical pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) were investigated in a wastewater treatment plant in Beijing, China. Thirty-three PPCPs were found in the influent, with caffeine (CF, 11387.0 ng L −1 ) being the most abundant, followed by N,N-diethyl- meta -toluamide (DEET, 9568.4 ng L −1 ), metoprolol (MTP, 930.2 ng L −1 ), and diclofenac (DF, 710.3 ng L −1 ). After treatment processes, the cumulative concentration of PPCPs decreased from 2.54 × 10 4 ng L −1 to 1.44 × 10 3 ng L −1 , with the overall removal efficiency (RE) of 94.3%. Different treatment processes showed varying contributions in removing PPCPs. PPCPs were efficiently removed in sedimentation, anoxic, and ultraviolet units. For individual compounds, a great variation in RE (52.1–100%) was observed. Twenty-two PPCPs were removed by more than 90%. The highly detected PPCPs in the influent were almost completely removed. Aerated grit chamber removed nearly 50% of fluoroquinolone (FQs) and more than 60% of sulfonamides. Most PPCPs showed low or negative removals during anaerobic treatment , except for CF which was eliminated by 64.9%. Anoxic treatment demonstrated positive removals for most PPCPs, with the exceptions of DF, MTP, bisoprolol, carbamazepine (CBZ), and sibutramine. DEET and bezafibrate were efficiently removed during the secondary sedimentation. Denitrification biological filter and membrane filtration also showed positive effect on most PPCPs removals. The remaining compounds were oxidized by 16–100% in ozonation . DF, sulpiride, ofloxacin (OFL), trimethoprim, and phenolphthalein were not amenable to ultraviolet. After the treatment, the residue OFL, CBZ, and CF in receiving water were identified to pose high risk to aquatic organisms. Considering the complex mixtures emitted into the environment, therapeutic groups psychotropics, stimulant, and FQs were classified as high risk. These findings provide valuable insights into adopting appropriate measures for more efficient PPCPs removals, and emphasize the importance of continued monitoring specific PPCPs and mixtures thereof to safeguard the ecosystem.

A new photoelectrochemical (PEC) system by means of adding sodium sulfite (Na 2 SO 3 ) was developed to treat sewage. The PEC system simultaneously promoted pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) degradation, H 2 evolution and E. coli disinfection using an optimized, visible–light driven BiVO 4 photoanode. The PEC reactions were first carried out in 1.5 mM Na 2 SO 3 electrolyte. 92.3% of 2 ppm benzophenone-3 (BZP) was degraded, and 115.36 μmol of H 2 was produced in 90 min at 1.0 V vs. Ag/AgCl, which was a significant improvement over cases where the electrolyte was either Na 2 SO 4 or NaCl. The sulfite ions were first activated by holes and then converted into sulfate radicals, which played a dominant role in the degradation of BZP. As the holes were caught by the sulfite, charge separation was also enhanced, increasing H 2 evolution. The PEC reactions were also used to treat real sewage, in which case an 82% improvement in the rate constant of BZP degradation, 60% increase of H 2 evolution, and 0.78 log enhancement of E. coli disinfection were achieved by adding 1.5 mM Na 2 SO 3. The system was also feasible to degrade various PPCPs, and showed excellent reusability and stability, proving its great potential in sewage treatment.

As an emerging carbon nanomaterial, carbon dots (CDs) have superior prospects for applications in the area of photocatalysis due to their unique optical and electronic properties. In this study, a novel CDs modified g-C 3 N 4 /SnO 2 photocatalyst (CDs/g-C 3 N 4 / SnO 2 ) was successfully synthesized by the thermal polymerization. Under visible light irradiation, the resulting CDs/g-C 3 N 4 /SnO 2 photocatalyst exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity for the degradation of indomethacin (IDM). It was demonstrated that a 0.5 % loading content of CDs led to the highest IDM degradation rate, which was 5.62 times higher than that of pristine g-C 3 N 4 . This improved photocatalytic activity might have been attributed to the unique up-conversion photoluminescence (PL) properties and efficient charge separation capacities of the CDs. Moreover, the combination of g-C 3 N 4 with SnO 2 improved the separation of photoinduced carriers and augmented the specific surface area. Reactive species (RSs) scavenging experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) revealed that superoxide radical anions (O 2 ·− ) and photogenerated holes (h + ) played critical roles during the photocatalytic process. The results of the detection of H 2 O 2 and ESR confirmed that CDs/g-C 3 N 4 / SnO 2 was a Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst. Further, HRAM LC–MS/MS was employed to identify the byproducts of IDM, and the major IDM degradation pathways of the CDs/g-C 3 N 4 /SnO 2 photocatalyst were proposed. This study provides new ideas for the design of novel CDs modified photocatalysts for environmental remediation.

Ferrate is increasingly used as an oxidant for chemical oxidation of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in reclaimed water. However, the instability of ferrate in aqueous solution and its low content of active ingredients have limited its application in water purification . In this paper, a novel β-cyclodextrin encapsulated potassium ferrate composite (KFO@β-CD) is synthesized for the first time using a thermomelting-condensation method and used to degrade carbamazepine (CBZ). This study evaluates and demonstrates the superior stability, sustained release behavior and hygroscopic characteristics of KFO@β-CD. In-depth investigations show that KFO@β-CD with a mass ratio of 10:1 can degrade 85.2 % of CBZ in 60 min. Analyzing the transformation pathways of CBZ has shown that Fe(VI) performed more reactive with olefinic double bond owing to electron-rich organic moieties, which convert carbamazepine to oxidized products with low molecular weight . These results significantly improve the state of our knowledge about this highly efficient and stable oxidant, which is likely to be useful for further degradation of PPCPs.

A composite manganese-based catalytic ceramic membrane (Mn-CCM) was developed by a solid-state sintering method, and its effectiveness toward activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of 11 pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) mixture was tested. The optimized Mn-CCMs/PMS system showed remarkable degradation efficiencies for PPCPs mixture with total removal >90% in ultrapure water, river water and natural organic matter (NOM) solution. The Mn-CCMs/PMS system showed the contribution of different phenomena in PPCPs removal in the order of catalytic oxidation (54.7%, Mn-CCMs/PMS) > noncatalytic oxidation (42.3%, PMS oxidation) > adsorption (3.0%, by Mn-CCMs). The singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) was the dominant reactive oxygen specie for the degradation of PPCPs in all water matrices proved by the quenching experiments and electro-paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The extraordinary stability of Mn-CCMs for the activation of PMS has been noted in terms of repeatability experiments for PPCPs degradation with fewer leaching of Mn (1.9 to 3.6 µg/L). Mineralization was achieved in the range of 28–65% for different water matrices. The toxicity of the PPCPs mixture was reduced by 85.9%. The Mn-CCMs/PMS system showed a reduction (25–100%) in precursors of different carbon- and nitrogen-based disinfection by-products. This study found the Mn-CCMs/PMS system as a feasible purification unit for removing trace concentrations of PPCPs (ng/L) in real drinking water matrices.
