High-temperature piezoelectric sensors for measurement-while-drilling (MWD) applications demand materials that simultaneously possess high piezoelectric sensitivity, low dielectric loss, and exceptional thermal stability. In this work, “hard” Mn-doped 0.02 Pb(Sb 1/2 Nb 1/2 )O 3 -(0.98- x )PbZrO 3 - x PbTiO 3 (PSN-PZ- x PT) ceramics were systematically designed. While the introduction of Mn 2+ acceptor ions effectively minimizes dielectric loss through domain wall pinning, it inevitably shifts the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). Meanwhile, for compositions near the MPB, the temperature dependence of the resonance frequency is significantly influenced by the Zr/Ti ratio. By finely tuning the Zr/Ti ratio in the vicinity of the MPB, materials exhibiting simultaneous high piezoelectric performance and excellent thermal stability were obtained. The composition with x = 0.465, located at the MPB, exhibited an excellent combination of properties: d 33 ∼ 320 pC/N, ε r ∼971, k p ∼0.63, T C ∼354 °C, tanδ ∼0.30%, and Q m ∼452. Remarkably, this composition demonstrated superior high-temperature stability up to 200 °C, with the resonance frequency variation (Δ f r / f r25 °C ) maintained within 2.45% and electromechanical coupling fluctuation (Δ k p / k p25 °C ) within 4.62%. These results demonstrate that the optimized Mn-doped PSN-PZT ceramics are promising candidates for high-power, high-temperature applications.

Achieving synergy between high solid loading and low viscosity for ceramic suspensions a critical issue in the field of stereolithography . In this work, we successfully obtained a well-dispersed PZT suspension with high solid loading (55 vol%) and low viscosity (3047.5 mPa s at 60 rpm) by adding appropriate amounts of dispersant (1 wt% KOS110) and thickening agent (2 wt% PEG300), providing a foundation for crack-free photosensitive lead zirconate titanate (PZT) samples. This work presented a simple approach for achieving synergy between the high solid loading and low viscosity of ceramic suspensions for stereolithography-based additive manufacturing .

The high d 33 = 418 pC/N, Q m = 1762 was obtained for PMS-PZT, providing remarkable FOM = d 33 * Q m which is improved by 57.5% without doping . • This anomalous result in PMS-PZT challenges the prevailing paradigm that chemical doping is mandatory for decoupling piezoelectricity and mechanical loss. • The T c = 331 °C and Δ d 33 < 5% (after annealing) shows the good high temperature stability, which is also beneficial to the high-power applications. In order to satisfy the demands of high-power applications, the desire to improve electromechanical properties of piezoelectric ceramics has become increasingly urgent. A conventional ternary ceramic system 0.05Pb(Mn 1/3 Sb 2/3 )O 3 -xPbZrO 3 -(0.95-x)PbTiO 3 (x = 0.45–0.49) (0.05PMS-xPZ-(0.95-x)PT) was studied through regulating the ratios of rhombohedral (R) and tetragonal (T) phases in this research. The phase compositions, microstructures, electromechanical properties and thermal stability of ceramics were characterized. The 0.05PMS-0.47PZ-0.48PT ceramics near the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) reveals remarkable comprehensive properties ( d 33 = 418 pC/N, Q m = 1762, FOM = d 33 * Q m = 7.37 × 10 5 pC/N, T c = 331 °C, tan δ = 0.28% (at 25 °C), ε r = 1606, k p = 0.62). Compared with the undoped PMS-PZT research reported before, the FOM is improved by 57.5%. Additionally, it also exhibits excellent thermal stability that from 25 °C to 150 °C, the variation of d 33 is less than 5%. The outstanding comprehensive properties are primarily ascribed to the optimal ratio of the R and T phases which is 19/81 and the pinning effect of defect dipoles. The XPS and PFM result directly proved the presence of defect dipoles and exhibited the structures of domains. The strong “defect dipole-strain cooperative pinning” in T phase rich MPB yield high Q m when the d 33 is enhanced at the same time. The results of this research especially the high FOM, low tan δ and excellent thermal stability indicate that the 0.05PMS-0.47PZ-0.48PT ceramics could be a promising alternative for the productions of piezoelectric devices working in a large temperature range in high-power fields.

Compared with conventional dry-pressing and sintering, which can yield high densification but are limited in constructing complex architectures, Direct ink writing (DIW) offers greater structural design flexibility. In this work, Gd/Sr co-doped PZT ceramics (Pb 0.97 Gd 0.01 Sr 0.02 Zr 0.53 Ti 0.47 O 3 ) were selected as the research material. Slurries with varying solid loadings (78–81 wt%) were prepared, and ceramic samples with a special lattice structure were fabricated via DIW, followed by binder burnout and sintering. The microstructure, electrical properties, and thermal characteristics of the samples were systematically analyzed to explore the effects of solid loading on printing stability, densification, and electrical performance. The results show that increasing the solid loading significantly promotes ceramic densification and enhances polarization response. The sample with 80 wt% solid loading exhibited the optimal performance, achieving a high relative density of 94%, d 33 of 302 pC/N, k p of 0.517, Q m of 53.17, and a slightly increased T C of 345 °C. This composition displayed a well-defined domain structure and superior polarization alignment, confirming the synergistic improvement in microstructure and electromechanical coupling. Using the optimized 80 wt% composition, complex PZT architectures were reliably printed with excellent fidelity, establishing a clear solid-loading–microstructure–performance correlation and confirming the feasibility of DIW for functional piezoelectric devices.

Dielectric film capacitors are a highly ubiquitous and indispensable electronic component, serving a crucial role in a wide array of electronic devices and power systems. Despite their extensive use, polymer film capacitors are often hampered by the conduction loss that ensues when they are subjected to high electric fields and temperatures. As a result, this leads to a significant reduction in energy density and charge-discharge efficiency. To solve this issue, magnetron sputtering technology was used to create a sandwich structure made of polyetherimide (PEI) thin films with lead zirconate titanate (PZT) inorganic layers coated on both sides. This remarkable innovation has successfully introduced the high dielectric PZT layer in the PEI film/metal electrode, substantially augmenting the barrier height at the dielectric/polymer interface. This has also resulted in a marked decrease in conduction loss, as conclusively validated by the experimental findings. At 150 °C and with charge-discharge efficiency above 90%, the maximum discharged energy density is 3.26 J/cm 3 , which is increased by 263% compared to the pristine PEI films (1.24 J/cm 3 at 290 MV/m and 150 °C). This study designed a unique inorganic barrier layer of PZT to increase the energy storage capability of polymer dielectric films in high-temperature environments.

The harvesting of waste heat is attracting increasing attention, due to its abundance and potential benefits to the environment. However, the need for high heat transfer rates in thermal harvesting systems is a longstanding obstacle for their practical application. In this work, we construct thermally conductive networks in Pb[(MnxNb1−x)1/2(MnxSb1−x)1/2]y(Zr95Ti5)1−yO3 (lead magnesium niobate–lead antimony–manganese–lead zirconate titanate: PMN–PMS–PZT) ceramics to improve heat transfer and enhance their ferroelectric properties by use of a thermally conductive AlN additive dispersed in the ceramic matrix. The ferroelectric properties, pyroelectric coefficient and thermal conductivity of the PMN–PMS–PZT: AlN composite materials are influenced by the AlN content as a result of the formation of random bridges or thermally conductive networks for phonon transfer in the ceramic matrix, thereby leading to high heat transfer. For a PMN–PMS–PZT composite with a 0.2 wt% AlN content, the ferroelectric properties, pyroelectric coefficient and thermal conductivity are shown to be enhanced owing to the improved crystallinity and density, and the relative permittivity is also reduced, which results in optimized pyroelectric figure of merits. This combination of materials property enhancements is shown to be beneficial for high performance pyroelectric materials in devices for energy harvesting applications.
