This study proposes the efficient separation of Au(III)/Pd(II)/Pt(IV)/Rh(III) through the 2-mercaptobenzothiazole-functionalised ionic liquid ([C6mim][2MBT]) using a cloud point extraction system. Direct cloud point extraction of Au(III) (about 99.9%) was realised without involving any functionalised ionic liquids. A significant enhancement of the Pd(II) extraction performance was found by adding rationally constructed [C6mim][2MBT]. Consequently, a fairly high extraction percentage of about 99.4% was obtained. However, further advancement of the proposed cloud point extraction showed that it could not be applied for the preconcentration of Pt(IV) and Rh(III) without adding stannous chloride, which plays a critical role in the segregation and could be adjusted by changing the hydrochloric acid concentration. Under the optimised conditions, the Rh(III) extraction process shows a high yield percentage (ca. 83.0%), where the majority of Pt(IV) was enriched in the aqueous phase. In addition, the underlying possible extraction mechanism was investigated using UV-vis, FT-IR and TEM measurements, which indicated that TX-114 acted as a solvent for the extracted metals. The developed procedure reveals efficient direct Au(III)/Pd(II)/Pt(IV)/Rh(III) separation using [C6mim][2MBT] via cloud point extraction.

The reduced graphene oxide aerogel modified by 4-chlorophenyl sulfoxide was obtained by a simple self-assemble process under the basic reduction-oxide condition, then freeze-dried for future using. The prepared aerogel was shortly named 4CS-rGO, which was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, et al. 1 mg of 4CS-rGO composite was used as an adsorbent to adsorb Pd(II) and Pt(IV) in 1.0 mL 40 mM Britton-Robinson buffer solution with various pH. The adsorption efficiency of Pd(II) increased with the increase in pH, whereas the hydrolysis of Pd(II) happened at pH 13, and the maximum adsorption efficiency of Pd(II) was 91.82% at pH 12, which was mainly driven by electrostatic attraction. Besides, the adsorption behavior of the 4CS-rGO composite for Pt(IV) was explored to evaluate the possibility to isolate Pd(II) and Pt(IV) ions by using aerogel. We found that, quite interestingly, hydrogen bond, hydrophobic interaction and van der Waals force can strongly conquer electrostatic repulsion driven Pt(IV) ions adsorption behavior at pH 5, and Pt(IV) ions displaced by cationic surfactant. Moreover, a tighter Pt(IV) ions adsorption behavior than Pd(II) ions was observed while we adsorb them respectively with/without 4-chlorophenyl sulfoxide modified the graphene, while branched TBAB was easier and more effectively replaced the adsorbed Pt(IV) ions than strained CTAB.

(Pd–CuCl2)/γ-Al2O3 catalyst with excellent activity and selectivity has been successfully developed for vapor-phase carbonylation of methyl nitrite to dimethyl carbonate (DMC). It has been demonstrated that Cl− is necessary for the superior selectivity (99.8%) to DMC, and that Cl− and Cu2+ have a synergetic effect. The Lewis acid sites of the γ-Al2O3 support may be suitable for vapor-phase carbonylation of methyl nitrite to DMC. Moreover, the catalytic mechanism of DMC formation on the (Pd–CuCl2)/γ-Al2O3 catalyst has been reasonably proposed based on the results of XPS and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy. The intermediate Cl–Pd(II)–COOCH3 is the key factor for the synthesis of DMC.

A highly efficient and practical Pd(II)/Cu(OAc)2-catalyst system of Saegusa oxidation, which converts enol ethers to the corresponding enals with a number of diverse substrates at extremely low catalyst loadings (500 mol ppm) under ligand-free and aqueous conditions, is described. Its synthetic utility was demonstrated by large-scale applications of the catalyst system to important nature molecules. This work allows Saegusa oxidation to become a highly practical approach to preparing enals and also suggests new insight into the Pd(II)/Cu(II)-catalyst system for dehydrogenation of carbonyl compounds and decreasing Pd-catalyst loadings.

Selective separation of precious metals from chloride-rich acidic media remains challenging because of the complex aqueous speciation of metal ions and the interference of competing ions. In this study, a polyethyleneimine (PEI)-functionalized tannin-based phenolic resin (TPR@PEI), enriched with O/N binding sites, was synthesized via Schiff base reactions for the selective separation and recovery of Au(III) and Pd(II) from complex acidic chloride solutions. The effects of key synthesis parameters, including tannic acid (TA) dosage, formaldehyde (FA) volume and crosslinking time, on adsorbent structure and Au(III)/Pd(II) adsorption performance were systematically investigated. Under the optimized synthesis conditions (1 g TA, 5 mL FA, and 2 h crosslinking time), TPR@PEI exhibited rapid adsorption kinetics, reaching equilibrium within 40 min for both metal ions. The adsorption behavior was well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model, with maximum adsorption capacities of 416.67 mg g −1 for Au(III) and 270.27 mg g −1 for Pd(II) at pH 2. More importantly, TPR@PEI showed superior selectivity toward Au(III) (> 99%) and Pd(II) (> 87%) in both binary and multicomponent systems, and maintained removal efficiencies remaining above 90% over five adsorption-desorption cycles. Combined characterization and density functional theory calculations (DFT) revealed that the excellent separation performance was governed by the synergistic effects of electrostatic attraction, redox interaction, and coordination/chelation enabled by the cooperative O/N-rich binding sites. These results demonstrate that TPR@PEI is a promising adsorbent for the highly selective separation and recovery of precious metals from complex chloride-rich acidic solutions.

The recovery of palladium from spent auto-exhaust catalysts (SAE-catalysts) is of great significance for resource sustainability. Herein, we proposed an efficient closed-loop leaching and recovery method for palladium from SAE-catalysts using iodotrihalide ionic liquids (ILs). Recovery design was explored aimed at green leaching and process simplification. Iodotrihalide ILs exhibited exceptional performance in terms of leaching efficiency (99.1%), selectivity (selectivity > 6.8 ×10 3 ) and reusability (over 6 cycles). The mechanism study revealed that excellent leaching performance was attributed to the redox and complexation. Additionally, the chemical reaction-controlled model was best suited to describe the leaching process. Notably, under the optimal conditions determined by the response surface methodology, a high-purity Pd(II) solution (purity > 99.8%) was obtained. More significantly, it was ideal for practical applications due to the low-viscosity (36.0 cP), mild (55 °C) and one-step leaching and recovery. In conclusion, this work provides an eco-friendly method for recovering palladium from SAE-catalysts with its non-high corrosiveness and low environmental impact.
