M@MIL-100(Fe) (M = Au, Pd, Pt) nanocomposites fabricated by a facile photodeposition process: Efficient visible-light photocatalysts for redox reactions in water

Liang Ruowen,Jing Fenfen,Shen Lijuan,Qin Na,Wu Ling

Proper design and preparation of high-performance and stable dual functional photocatalytic materials remains a significant objective of research. In this work, highly dispersed noble-metal nanoparticles (Au, Pd, Pt) were immobilized on MIL-100(Fe) (denoted M@MIL-100(Fe)) using a facile room-temperature photodeposition technique. The resulting M@MIL-100(Fe) (M = Au, Pd, and Pt) nanocomposites exhibited enhanced photoactivities toward photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) and reduction of heavy-metal Cr(VI) ions under visible-light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm) compared with blank-MIL-100(Fe). Combining these results with photoelectrochemical analyses revealed that noble-metal deposition can effectively improve the charge-separation efficiency of MIL-100(Fe) under visible-light irradiation. This phenomenon in turn leads to the enhancement of visible-light-driven photoactivity of M@MIL-100(Fe) toward photocatalytic redox reactions. In particular, the Pt@MIL-100(Fe) with an average Pt particle size of 2 nm exhibited remarkably enhanced photoactivities compared with those of M@MIL-100(Fe) (M = Au and Pd), which can be attributed to the integrative effect of the enhanced light absorption intensity and more efficient separation of the photogenerated charge carrier. In addition, possible photocatalytic reaction mechanisms are also proposed.

Selective hydrogenation of vanillin to vanillyl alcohol over Pd, Pt, and Au catalysts supported on an advanced nitrogen-containing carbon material produced from food waste

Xingjie Guo,Ge Gao,Javier Remón,Ya Ma,Zhicheng Jiang,Bi Shi,Daniel C.W. Tsang

Food waste worldwide has been threatening the environment and resulting in high carbon emissions. Although anaerobic fermentation is a potential solution transforming food waste into valuable chemicals, a large amount of the fermentation residue remains as solid waste. For closing the circular economy loop for food waste valorization, we proposed a thermo-chemical activation of a fermentation residue produced from a mixture of food waste and sludge to prepare a nitrogen-enriched, advanced carbon material. This could be used as a support to synthesize Pd/C, Pt/C and Au/C catalysts for the aqueous-phase hydrogenation of vanillin to vanillyl alcohol at mild reaction conditions. The produced alcohol increased sixfold the commercial value of the original aldehyde. The catalytic performance (based on the vanillin conversion and vanillyl alcohol yield) followed the order of Pd/C > Pt/C > Au/C. The Pd/C catalyst showed an excellent catalytic activity (>99% vanillin conversion and > 99% vanillyl alcohol selectivity) at optimized reaction conditions (i.e., 30 °C and 0.7 MPa H 2 for 90 min, with 2 mmol vanillin/10 mg catalyst), along with high reusability and stability (up to four consecutive runs). These catalytic features outperformed those of a commercial Pd/C catalyst owing to: (i) high reduction degree and stabilization of the Pd particles on the carbon support, which accommodated a higher proportion of pyridinic than pyrrolic nitrogen, and (ii) rapid adsorption of the aldehyde group on the catalyst combined with rapid desorption of the newly formed hydroxymethyl group. This exceptional catalytic behavior was corroborated by efficient hydrogenation of other lignin-derived aromatic aldehydes, including p-hydroxybenzaldehyde and syringaldehyde, to their respective alcohols. Our results can bring a novel use for food waste in catalysis and represent a sustainable and efficient conversion of biomass into value-added chemicals and advanced materials.

Sandwich-type electrochemical aptasensor based on hollow mesoporous carbon spheres loaded with porous dendritic Pd@Pt nanoparticles as signal amplifier for ultrasensitive detection of cardiac troponin I

Zhenxing Wang,Hongli Zhao,Kaicha Chen,Hongyuan Li,Minbo Lan

Signal amplification is crucial to improve the sensitivity for the electrochemical detection of cardiac troponin I (cTnI), one of the ideal biomarkers for early acute myocardial infarction (AMI) diagnosis. Herein, we developed a novel signal amplification strategy to construct a sandwich-type electrochemical aptasensor for the detection of cTnI. Core-shell [email protected] dendritic bimetallic nanoparticles loaded on melamine modified hollow mesoporous carbon spheres ( [email protected] DNs/NH 2 -HMCS) was prepared as labels to conjugate with thiol-modification DNA aptamers probe for signal amplification. While introducing numerous amino groups, the melamine functionalized hollow mesoporous carbon spheres (NH 2 -HMCS) retained the edge-plane-like defective sites for the adhesion and electrocatalytic reduction of H 2 O 2 . With the unique characteristics of NH 2 -HMCS, it not only enhanced the dispersity and loading capacity of core-shell [email protected] dendritic bimetallic nanoparticles ( [email protected] DNs), but also improved the stability of bonding by the affinity interaction between [email protected] DNs and amino groups of melamine. Meanwhile, the synergistic catalysis effect between [email protected] DNs and NH 2 -HMCS significantly enhanced the electrocatalytic reduction of H 2 O 2 and further amplified the signal. Under optimal conditions, this recommended aptasensor for cTnI detection displayed a wide dynamic range from 0.1 pg/mL to 100.0 ng/mL and a low detection limit of 15.4 fg/mL (S/N = 3). The sensor also successfully realized the analysis of cTnI-spiked human serum samples, meaning potential applications in AMI diagnosis.

Trace Amount of Bi-Doped Core–Shell Pd@Pt Mesoporous Nanospheres with Specifically Enhanced Peroxidase-Like Activity Enable Sensitive and Accurate Detection of Acetylcholinesterase and Organophosphorus Nerve Agents

Mengdie Lei,Xilin Ding,Jin Liu,Yinjun Tang,Hongxiang Chen,Yu Zhou,Chengzhou Zhu,Hongye Yan

The urgent need for sensitive and accurate assays to monitor acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) arises from the imperative to safeguard human health and protect the ecosystem. Due to its cost-effectiveness, ease of operation, and rapid response, nanozyme-based colorimetry has been widely utilized in the determination of AChE activity and OPs. However, the rational design of nanozymes with high activity and specificity remains a great challenge. Herein, trace amount of Bi-doped core–shell Pd@Pt mesoporous nanospheres (Pd@PtBi2) have been successfully synthesized, exhibiting good peroxidase-like activity and specificity. With the incorporation of trace bismuth, there is a more than 4-fold enhancement in the peroxidase-like performance of Pd@PtBi2 compared to that of Pd@Pt. Besides, no significant improvement of oxidase-like and catalase-like activities of Pd@PtBi2 was found, which prevents interference from O2 and undesirable consumption of substrate H2O2. Based on the blocking impact of thiocholine, a colorimetric detection platform utilizing Pd@PtBi2 was constructed to monitor AChE activity with sensitivity and selectivity. Given the inhibition of OPs on AChE activity, a biosensor was further developed by integrating Pd@PtBi2 with AChE to detect OPs, capitalizing on the cascade amplification strategy. The OP biosensor achieved a detection limit as low as 0.06 ng mL–1, exhibiting high sensitivity and anti-interference ability. This work is promising for the construction of nanozymes with high activity and specificity, as well as the development of nanozyme-based colorimetric biosensors.

Novel two-dimensional Ti3C2Tx MXene-supported Ni-M (M = Pd, Pt, Ru): A remarkable catalyst for efficient HDO of guaiacol under hydrothermal conditions: Performance, mechanism and kinetic studies

Junqian Wang,Yi Wang,Yuqi Wang,Xinyi Li,Caichao Wu,Tianyu Zhang,Bin Tian,Lili Qian,Yang Guo,Le Wu,Lan Zheng,Yanan Li,Xin Ding

Currently, traditional hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) catalysts have various shortcomings such as low activity levels and vulnerability to deactivation. Therefore, a series of MXene-supported Ni-M (M = Pd, Pt, Ru) bimetallic catalysts were designed and prepared. The above catalysts were also comprehensively characterized using XRD, BET, H 2 -TPR, NH 3 -TPD, XPS, SEM and TEM methods. Moreover, due to the largest particular specific surface area, moderate amount of acid sites and the strongest three-electron transfer channels between support and active metals of Ni-Pd/MXene catalyst, it exhibited the superior catalytic performance to achieve 100 % guaiacol conversion and 35.15 % highest overall yields of HDO products (Y HDO ) under the optimal reaction conditions (at 340 °C for 8 h, utilizing in-situ hydrogen source: formic acid). Furthermore, a detailed discussion on the main reaction pathways and mechanism of guaiacol HDO catalyzed by Ni-Pd/MXene was provided, an unique bimetallic synergistic “relay catalytic” theory has been proposed. Kinetic studies revealed that phenol, one of the main HDO products, is primarily generated via guaiacol demethoxylation, while catechol dehydroxylation to phenol acts as the rate-determining step. This work introduces a new strategy for the development of HDO catalysts.

A dual-aptamer-based biosensor for specific detection of breast cancer biomarker HER2 via flower-like nanozymes and DNA nanostructures

Dan Ou,Duanping Sun,Xiangan Lin,Zhixian Liang,Yongsheng Zhong,Zuanguang Chen

Developing highly sensitive and selective detection strategies for biomarkers is beneficial for fundamental research and disease diagnosis. Herein, we constructed a sandwich-type electrochemical aptasensor to detect the breast cancer cell biomarker Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2 (HER2). The aptasensor was a combination of tetrahedral DNA nanostructures (TDNs)–aptamer as recognition probes and flower-like nanozymes/horseradish peroxidase (HRP) as signal nanoprobes. In the process of assembling the biosensor, the TDN–aptamer 1 as a bio-recognition element was immobilized on the gold electrode (GE) surface for capturing the biomarker HER2. The nanozyme Mn3O4 was decorated by Pd@Pt nanozymes which were linked by the aptamer 2 and natural enzyme HRP. The designed Mn3O4/Pd@Pt/HRP nanoprobe (nanoprobe 1) was used to amplify the biosensor signal via catalyzing the oxidation of hydroquinone (HQ) with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). After binding HER2, an aptamer–protein–nanoprobe sandwich system was fabricated on the GE surface. Lastly, a Pd@Pt/HRP/complementary DNA (cDNA) nanoprobe (nanoprobe 2) was added on the surface of nanoprobe 1 through DNA hybridization of aptamer 2 and cDNA to form a dendritic DNA nanostructure to further amplify the signal significantly. The results indicate that the aptasensor shows a broad linear response from 0.1 to 100.0 ng mL−1 and the low detection limit is 0.08 ng mL−1. The designed approach holds great potential for the construction of various aptasensors for the effective and convenient detection of different biomarkers.
