Hydrogen-induced Ptσ+–O–Ti4+–(H–oxygen vacancy) interfacial sites in Pt/TiO2 for enhanced low-temperature CO oxidation

Junbo Tian,Peng Zheng,Shuang Deng,Yongjun Ji,Tengfei Zhang,Zhiyi Sun,Wenxing Chen,Yi-Chi Wang,Lin Gu,Dong Su,Guangwen Xu,Ziyi Zhong,Fabing Su

Understanding reconstructed interfacial sites is crucial for enhancing the catalytic conversion efficiency, as these sites can facilitate reactant adsorption, transformation, and desorption. Herein, we report an unconventional interfacial structure of Pt σ + –O–Ti 4+ –H δ + –oxygen vacancy (OV), in which atomic hydrogen binds to Ti 4+ sites via a charge-compensation mechanism involving subsurface OVs. This restructuring induced by hydrogen creates electron-rich Pt centers and interfacial oxygen, resulting in spatial elongation of the Pt–O and O–Ti bonds. This Pt σ + –O site, stabilized by –Ti 4+ –(H–OV), promotes the activation of CO adsorption/interfacially absorbed oxygen and interfacial lattice oxygen, effectively coupling the Langmuir-Hinshelwood and Mars-van Krevelen pathways. These sites facilitate the rapid CO 2 formation and desorption. Consequently, this system achieves complete CO conversion at 120 °C with an ultralow Pt loading of 0.17 wt% (even in the presence of 0.005% SO 2 and 10% vol H 2 O) and a 59-fold increase in turnover frequency compared to the control sample lacking this interfacial structure.

Synthesis of Morphology-Tunable PbS-Pt-TiO2 Nanohybrids with Strong Light Absorption and Enhanced Photothermal and Photocatalytic Degradation Performance

Jingsong Liu,Songyao Wu,Zhe Dong,Meizi Yang,Fengyuan Zhang,Guowei Li,Hangyu Yan,Mengdai Luoshan

Multicomponent heterojunctions have attracted considerable attention for the potential applications in photodriving applications. However, the limited number of active sites on the surface and the rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers restrict the improvement of the performance of photothermal conversion and photocatalytic degradation. Here, a ternary nanohybrid composed of PbS, Pt, and TiO2 is presented for the first time. PbS nanocrystals evolved from octahedral to a unique 24-faceted morphology were monitored and described systematically. Then, they were selectively deposited by Pt nanoparticles and coated with a TiO2 thin nanoshell. Under 808 nm near-infrared laser irradiation, the photothermal conversion performance and photocatalytic reduction rates of these nanohybrids were investigated in depth. Among them, the PbS-Pt-TiO2 nanohybrids exhibited the highest photothermal conversion efficiency and fastest degradation speed of Rhodamine B when compared to PbS-Pt and pure PbS, which are attributed to the effective light absorption of 24-faceted PbS nanocrystals and the outer TiO2 shell, the abundant catalytic active sites provided by Pt nanoparticles, and the excellent separation and transportation efficiency of hot carriers between different components.

Ti-mediated reduction to construct the oxygen vacancy-rich Pt-TiO2 catalysts for the hydrogen production of dodecahydro-N-ethylcarbazole

Jiale Dou,Zhuwei Yang,Linsen Li,Xinyi Hu,Li Lin,Lixia Ling,Zhao Jiang

With the global energy structure transitioning towards decarbonization, hydrogen energy has emerged as a critical energy carrier due to its merits of zero carbon emissions and high energy density. As a candidate material for liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC), it is necessary to develop efficient dehydrogenation catalysts of dodecahydro-N-ethylcarbazole (12H-NECZ) to overcome the challenges of low kinetics and selectivity. In this work, by the defect engineering strategy, a series of Pt-TiO 2 catalysts are synthesized via thermal reduction using titanium (Ti) as a reducing agent. The effects of various TiO 2 :Ti molar ratios (5:1 to 8:1), annealing temperatures (550–850 °C), and Pt loadings on the structural and catalytic properties are systematically investigated. It is indicated that the 2.5Pt-7:1–650 catalyst exhibits optimal dehydrogenation efficiency, achieving 100 % conversion, 99.03 % selectivity of NECZ, and hydrogen release capacity of 5.77 wt% under 453 K and 101.325 kPa for 7 h. Various structural characterizations from XRD, H 2 -TPR, ESR, and XPS analysis reveal that the oxygen vacancies and Ti 3+ species are generated induced by the metallic Ti reduction. The interaction between Pt and TiO 2 facilitates the electron transfer from TiO 2 to Pt, optimizes the electronic state of Pt and promotes the C-H bond cleavage of benzene ring in adsorbed 12-NECZ molecules. Furthermore, the kinetic analysis for a three-step reaction pathway confirms the dehydrogenation of 4H-NECZ to NECZ is the rate-limiting step. The stability measurements suggest that 2.5Pt-7:1–650 maintains the hydrogen release amount of 5.64 wt% after 20 cycles at 453 K, demonstrating the potential applications for the NECZ/12-NECZ system. This study provides a novel strategy for designing high-performance LOHC dehydrogenation catalysts through defect engineering.

CdS nanoparticles with highly exposed (1 1 1) facets decorated on Pt/TiO2 nanotubes for highly efficient photocatalytic H2 evolution

Dandan Liu,Haiou Liang,Chunping Li,Jie Bai

Photocatalytic water splitting is a prospective strategy to solve the shortage of human fossil fuel energy. In this work, we designed and synthesized the Pt as co-catalyst decorated on TiO 2 nanotubes/metastable zinc-blende (ZB) CdS nanoparticles (NPs) with highly exposed (1   1   1) facets (HPTCA3) via the electrospinning-solvothermal and chemical deposition methods. The H 2 evolution rate of HPTCA3 was 15025.38 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 , which was about 111.3 and 2.4 times stronger than that of pure CdS power and Pt-TiO 2 /CdS hollow nanotubes (HPTC). The XRD patterns showed the presence of acetate promoted the growth of ZB CdS (1   1   1) crystal facets, and the photogenerated electrons were easily tended to accumulate on the CdS (1   1   1) facets, whichwas conducive to the transmission of electrons on the CdS and TiO 2 interface. The type II heterojunction can broaden the visible light response range and accelerate the separation and transfer of photo-generated electrons and holes which can be supported by the Optical and Electrochemical characterizations. Band structure calculations and XPS spectrum indicated that the composite catalyst had an efficient electron transfer mechanism, which was beneficial for the spatial separation of photogenerated carriers. The work provides a rational photocatalyst design to improve the performance of photocatalytic splitting of water into hydrogen.

A tumor microenvironment responsive titanium-based nanosonosensitizer for combination sonodynamic-immunotherapy with calcium ion overload

Cong Tang,Huansong Li,Mashiti Sha,Jianyin Song,Xue Bai,Kairui Liu,Yangsui Liu,Bo Yuan,Jun Yan,Jin Chang,Jun Kang

Ultrasound (US)-triggered sonodynamic therapy (SDT) has become a promising method and has attracted considerable attention for cancer therapy due to its high accuracy, deep tissue penetration, and few side effects. However, the therapeutic efficacy of SDT is limited by the hypoxic tumor microenvironment (TME) and the low quantum yield of sonosensitizers. Immunogenic cell death (ICD) induced by calcium ion overload has attracted widespread attention because it can trigger antitumor immune responses and reconstitute tumor immune microenvironment (TIM). In this study, a TME-responsive CaCO 3 @Pt-TiO 2 nanocomposite (CaPT) was engineered, which combined Pt nanoparticles and CaCO 3 nanoparticles to amplify oxidative stress in cancer cells for cancer sonodynamic immunotherapy. The Pt nanoparticles not only enhanced the reactive oxygen species (ROS) quantum yield of TiO 2 during SDT but also catalyzed the decomposition of H 2 O 2 to overcome tumor hypoxia. The CaCO 3 @Pt-TiO 2 nanocomposite responded to the TME and released a large amount of Ca 2+ , which amplified oxidative stress and triggered robust ICD activation. This process greatly contributed to inflammatory cell infiltration and shifted the TIM from cold to hot. The experimental results confirmed and demonstrated the synergistic therapeutic effects of sonodynamic-immunotherapy in vitro and in vivo . The antitumor mechanisms of sonodynamic immunotherapy were demonstrated by RNA sequencing. This study paves the way for Ti-based nanosensitizers, providing a novel strategy for sonodynamic-assisted immunotherapy.

Efficient Reductive Amination of Furfural to a Primary Amine on a Pt/TiO2 Catalyst: A Manifestation of the Nanocluster Proximity Effect

Xiaorui Du,Chongshuai Gao,Jiaxin Huang,Yanbin Cui,Shijun Liu,Chenguang Wang

Controlling both the hydrogenation performance and the activation of Schiff base intermediate in catalysts is crucial for attaining high slectivity toward primary amine in the reduction amination of furfural. However, it remains pending for Pt-based catalysts, on which the reduction amination reactions rarely generate primary amines so far. In this work, we developed a Pt/TiO2 nanocluster (NC) catalyst with a size distribution independent of the reduction temperature and loading amount. The reductive amination performance was investigated by regulating the surface electronic state and the distance between Pt NCs, and the results, attractively, revealed that the catalyst with a lower loading amount exhibited a higher furfurylamine (FAM) yield. Further studies unraveled that the catalyst with a larger Pt NC proximity had more abundant effective adsorption sites for the key intermediate Schiff base, i.e., the surface Ti4+ sites adjacent to the Pt NC, promoting the transformation of the Schiff base. Meanwhile, reducing the surface density of Pt NCs helped control the intensity of hydrogen spillover, thereby inhibiting the occurrence of overhydrogenation reactions. Optimal activity for primary amine generation from furfural reductive amination was achieved with a Pt NC catalyst reduced at 500 °C and with a loading amount of only 0.1 wt %, resulting in a FAM yield exceeding 93% and a production rate of 297.9 gFAM gPt h–1. The reaction mechanism, involving the competitive relationship between NH3 and H2, was elucidated through kinetic studies and theoretical calculations. This work provides insights for the designation of catalysts with controllable hydrogenation activity and adsorption selectivity and contributes to the understanding of the mechanism of the reductive amination reaction.

Enhanced Photothermal Catalytic Conversion of CO2 into CO Using Uniformly Dispersed Pt on Mesoporous TiO2

Xining Guo,Huiying Li,Leshi Zhang,Rui Hao,Fei Ye,Jianmin Gu,Kaihang Sun,Guozhu Li,Ji−Jun Zou,Zhourong Xiao,Desong Wang

The photothermal catalytic conversion of CO2 into value-added chemicals is of great significance for realizing the goal of carbon neutralization. However, these catalysts have problems such as an insignificant photothermal effect and high recombination of photogenerated carriers. Here, porous TiO2 was prepared by hydrothermal crystallization and topological conversion of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), and loaded with highly dispersed Pt catalysts to realize an efficient photothermal catalytic reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction. N2-adsorption results showed that the as-prepared Pt/TiO2 catalysts had an abundant mesoporous structure, thus contributing to the rapid diffusion of reactants and light transport. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) results showed that Pt was uniformly dispersed on the catalyst surface with an average particle size of 2.06 nm. H2-TPR profiles showed that the Pt/TiO2 catalyst had strong metal–support interactions, CO2-TPD showed its strong CO2 adsorption capacity, and CO-TPD showed its weak CO adsorption strength. In situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed that the electron cloud density on the Pt surface further increased under light illumination, which contributed to the activation and dissociation of H2. In addition, the Pt/TiO2 catalyst had a narrow band gap width and sufficiently low reduction potential, and its excellent photothermal and photovoltaic properties ensured efficient performance in the photothermal RWGS reaction. The Pt/TiO2 catalysts showed a high CO2 conversion of 29.8%, a product CO selectivity higher than 99.6%, and a stability of more than 3000 min at 350 °C, with a light intensity of 1.2 W cm–2 and a GHSV of 36,000 mL gcat–1 h–1.

Tuning charge transfer of Pt cluster by support defects in Pt/TiO2 for photocatalytic conversion of fatty acid into diesel-like alkane

Feng Long,Xincheng Cao,Peng Liu,Xia Jiang,Jianchun Jiang,Xiaolei Zhang,Junming Xu

Efficient deoxygenation for the bio-derived fatty acid is paramount to producing diesel-like alkane and usually requires harsh reaction conditions. Here, we reported an efficient conversion system for the photocatalytic conversion of fatty acid over Pt/TiO 2 catalysts and acid conversion higher than 99.0% (yield nearly 84.5%) under the mild conditions 30 °C, 0.1 MPa H 2, and 365 nm light. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations suggest that the oxygen vacancies TiO 2 can achieve the charge transfer from TiO 2 support to Pt clusters. The electron-rich Pt cluster can promote hydrogen spillover to form a hydrogen-rich surface. Thus, it leads to the photo-decarboxylation C n-1 alkyl radical being amenable to proton hydrogenation to produce C n-1 alkane. Detailed characterization demonstrates that 0.50 wt% Pt/TiO 2 has superior photocatalytic performance. Introducing the Pt atoms can promote the formation the oxygen vacancies and reverse charge transfer, which determines the acid adsorption and conversion mechanism.

Pt-TiO2 mesoporous nanosystem co-delivering phlorezin enables synergistic sonodynamic-chemoimmunotherapy for hepatocellular carcinoma via directly targeting DDX5 and metabolic reprogramming modulation

Kairui Liu,Bo Zhang,Yue Wan,Zhiru Yang,Abdusami Abdurahman,Mengxin He,Shengtao Hu,Yi Zhang,Xiaoke Li,Jin Chang,Jun Kang,Liren Liu,Wanghua Liu,Shao Li

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), ranking as the third leading cause of cancer-related mortality globally, continues to pose significant therapeutic challenges. Here, we developed an innovative nanosystem, Phl@PT, based on Pt-TiO 2 nanoparticles for the co-delivery of Phlorezin, presenting a novel approach for HCC treatment through sonodynamic therapy (SDT). Phl@PT demonstrated remarkable efficacy in inducing mitochondrial membrane potential collapse and cristae damage in vitro. Transcriptomic sequencing analysis revealed that Phl@PT treatment led to the downregulation of key genes: CLDN6 , involved in the cell adhesion molecules pathway, and BCKDHB and SUCLG2 , associated with propanoate metabolism. Through a comprehensive target fishing strategy combined with Bio-Layer Interferometry analysis, we identified DDX5, a DEAD-box RNA helicase, as a novel target protein of Phlorezin, which plays a crucial role in tumor progression and prognosis. In vivo studies demonstrated that US-activated Phl@PT not only effectively inhibited HCC growth in murine models but also activated CD8 + /CD4 + T cells, promoted dendritic cell maturation, and enhanced the expression of key immune cytokines including TNF-α, IL-12, and IFN-γ, thereby establishing a robust immunotherapeutic response. Collectively, our findings demonstrate that the Pt-TiO 2 mesoporous nanoagent co-delivering phlorezin represents a promising therapeutic platform for HCC treatment through synergistic sonodynamic-chemo-immunotherapy.

Photocatalytic transfer hydrogenolysis of aryl ethers

Zhikun Peng,Zhixi Wu,Xiaotong Sun,Hongji Li

Aryl ethers greatly influence lignin depolymerization and the oxygen content in lignin products. Cleaving aryl ethers normally requires harsh conditions such as high-pressure hydrogen gas and elevated temperature. Herein, we developed a synergistic method that combines photocatalytic hydrogen transfer with acid catalysis for H2-free hydrogenolysis of diphenyl ether and aromatic oxygenates at room temperature. The electron-enriched Pt/TiO2 surface stored abundant hydrogen species under light irradiation and efficiently catalyzed hydrogen transfer from isopropanol to aryl ethers. The acid mediated the hydrogenation sequence into: hydrogenolysis of aryl C–O bonds > saturation of aryl rings ≫ hydrogenolysis of aliphatic C–O bonds. DFT calculations suggested the aryl ether bond adsorbed on the Pt surface was weakened through protonation. This method delivered 98% yield of aliphatic monomers (73% cyclohexane and 25% cyclohexanol) from cleavage of diphenyl ether, and converted aromatic mixtures into cycloalkanes (57%) and aliphatic alcohols (9%) under mild conditions.

Construction of Pt/TiO2 heterojunction composite supported on N, P-Co-doped hollow carbon and study on the electrochemical sensing performance for Cu2+

Yanhong Zhang,Liulu Liu,Nanke Ma,Lixia Xie,Yuan Jin,Guangli Li

PNHC@Pt/TiO₂ core–shell heterojunction for trace Cu²⁺ monitoring. • N/P doping & O defects boost Cu²⁺ coordination and enrichment. • Low LOD 0.006 µM, wide linear range 0.001–20 µM. • Excellent selectivity against multiple coexisting heavy metal ions. • Reliable recoveries (87.1–103.3%) in tap water, soil, serum. Copper ion (Cu 2+ ) is a prevalent heavy metal contaminant in industrial wastewater and natural water bodies. Although it plays a vital role as a trace element in human physiology, overconsumption can result in severe systemic disorders. In this work, a novel electrochemical sensing platform based on P, N co-doped hollow carbon (PNHC) decorated with Pt/TiO 2 nanoparticles (PNHC@Pt/TiO 2 ) was developed for the ultrasensitive detection of Cu 2+ . The composite was systematically characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, and XPS, confirming the formation of a core-shell structure with a uniform spherical morphology (104.20 ± 0.21 nm), along with N/P heteroatoms that provide specific coordination affinity toward Cu 2+ . Compared to bare and single-component electrodes, the PNHC@Pt/TiO 2 -modified GCE delivered an enlarged electroactive surface area (0.1289 cm 2 ) and lower charge-transfer resistance; under the optimized parameters (pH 5.0, accumulation potential −0.8 V, accumulation time 180 s, and modifier volume 5 µL), this sensor presented a Cu 2+ linear detection range of 0.001–20 µM, a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.006 µM (S/N = 3), and a high sensitivity of 6.102 µA µM −1 . The sensor also exhibited excellent selectivity against common interfering ions (K + , Na⁺, Ni 2+ , Co 2+ , Zn 2+ , Cd 2+ ), good reproducibility, and long-term stability (83.7% current retention after 8 days). Practical applicability was validated by successful determination of Cu 2+ in tap water, soil, and serum samples with recoveries ranging from 87.1% to 103.3%, demonstrating the reliable performance of the proposed sensor for environmental and biological monitoring.

Reciprocal regulation between support defects and strong metal-support interactions for highly efficient reverse water gas shift reaction over Pt/TiO2 nanosheets catalysts

Ziyang Chen,Long Liang,Huan Yuan,Huan Liu,Peng Wu,Mingli Fu,Junliang Wu,Peirong Chen,Yongcai Qiu,Daiqi Ye,Limin Chen

Strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) is regarded as one of the most important concepts in heterogeneous catalysis; however, few researches are focused on SMSI regulating the support structure, properties and their roles on the catalytic performance. Herein, anatase TiO 2 {001} nanosheets pretreated in different atmosphere were used to load Pt for reverse water gas shift reaction. The Pt/N-doped TiO 2 catalysts exhibited significantly superior catalytic performance. The investigation demonstrated that defects and doped-N enhance the Pt dispersion while Pt and SMSI in turn promote defects regeneration during activation in H 2 . During reaction, surface defects enable CO 2 activation to generate active intermediates which easily decompose into CO. Furthermore, the small Pt particles and SMSI facilitate H 2 dissociative adsorption and spillover to replenish both surface defects and bulk Ti 3+ . Besides, a novel reaction route has been observed that the stable bulk Ti 3+ in N-doped TiO 2 migrate and transform to surface defects, enhancing catalytic performance.
