The engineering of electrocatalysts with high performance for cathodic and/or anodic catalytic reactions is of great urgency for the development of direct methanol fuel cells. Pt-based bimetallic alloys have recently received considerable attention in the field of fuel cells because of their superior catalytic performance towards both fuel molecule electro-oxidation and oxygen reduction. In this work, bimetallic PtCo mesoporous nanospheres (PtCo MNs) with uniform size and morphology have been prepared by a one-step method with a high yield. The as-made PtCo MNs show superior catalytic activities for both oxygen reduction reaction and methanol oxidation reaction relative to Pt MNs and commercial Pt/C catalyst, attributed to their mesoporous structure and bimetallic composition.

The development of high-performance and durable oxygen reduction reaction catalysts under harsh working environments remains a key challenge in advancing proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Here, we report a series of hollow-structured covalent organic framework-derived carbon as support materials for PtCo alloy nanocatalysts. These hollow architectures provide unique spatial confinement and encapsulation effects, which not only facilitate efficient mass transport but also protect active sites from degradation in acidic media, thereby ensuring simultaneous enhancement in activity and stability. The optimized PtCo@NC TAPBT catalyst delivers a peak power density of 1.23 W cm −2 under H 2 -Air conditions and a mass activity of 1.06 A mg Pt −1 at 0.9 V, representing 2.41 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C (0.40 A mg Pt −1 ). Moreover, the fuel cell assembled with this catalyst exhibits outstanding durability, showing a voltage degradation of only 8 mV after 30000 cycles at 0.8 A cm −2 and a mass activity retention of 87.7% (0.93 A mg Pt −1 ). Notably, this performance exceeds the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2025 initial mass activity target (0.44 A mg Pt −1 ) by a factor of 2.1, highlighting the potential of HCOF-derived carbon materials for next-generation fuel cell applications.

The development of excellent activity and durability catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is essential for the commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Reducing the size of catalyst particles can provide more reaction sites to mitigate the performance degradation caused by reduced platinum loading. However, at the same time, it makes the particles more prone to agglomeration and exfoliation, leading to a rapid reduction in catalyst activity. Here, we present the design of a composite support (TiO2/CNT) with a porous TiO2 film that immobilizes PtCo nanoparticles (NPs) loaded on the support while protecting the carbon nanotubes inside. The particle size of PtCo NPs was only 1.99 nm (determined by transmission electron microscopy), but the nanocatalyst (PtCo/TiO2/CNT) maintained high catalytic performance and stability on account of the strong metal support interaction (SMSI). PtCo/TiO2/CNT exhibited a high mass activity (MA, 0.476 A mgPt–1) and was found to have MA retention rates of 91.7 and 88.8% in durability tests performed at 0.6–1.0 V and 1.0–1.5 V, respectively.

A novel electrochemical sensor designed to recognize and detect tartrazine (TZ) was constructed based on a molecularly imprinted polydopamine (MIPDA)-coated nanocomposite of platinum cobalt (PtCo) nanoalloy-functionalized graphene oxide (GO). The nanocomposites were characterized and the TZ electrochemical detection performance of the sensor and various reference electrodes was investigated. Interestingly, the synergistic effect of the strong electrocatalytic activity of the PtCo nanoalloy-decorated GO and the high TZ recognition ability of the imprinted cavities of the MIPDA coating resulted in a large and specific response to TZ. Under the optimized conditions, the sensor displayed linear response ranges of 0.003–0.180 and 0.180–3.950 µM, and its detection limit was 1.1 nM (S/N = 3). The electrochemical sensor displayed high anti-interference ability, good stability, and adequate reproducibility, and was successfully used to detect TZ in spiked food samples. Comparison of important indexes of this sensor with those of previous electrochemical sensors for TZ revealed that this sensor showed improved performance. This surface-imprinted sensor provides an ultrasensitive, highly specific, effective, and low-cost method for TZ determination in foodstuffs. Keywords:platinum cobalt nanoalloy;molecularly imprinted polydopamine;graphene oxide;tartrazine;electrochemical sensor

For the treatment of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), without expression of estrogen, progesterone and HER2 receptors, specific treatment guideline is still under criticism, especially in tumor hypoxia. But assuming the molecular similarity of TNBC with breast cancer gene-1-related cancers, gemcitabine may be used in TNBC treatment on the nanozyme platform combined with photodynamic therapy (PDT). After designing the nanozyme with four components, platinum–cobalt: with catalase/peroxidase capabilities, hyaluronic acid: nanozyme targeting by interacting with CD44 receptor, poly[ethylene glycol]: water-soluble macromolecule for immune escape, and Gem: antitumor drug, its physicochemical properties was investigated by thermogravimetric, X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray, and therapeutic effects in in vitro and in vivo. The results show that platinum–cobalt@gemcitabine-hyaluronic acid-polyethylene glycol (PtCo@Gem-HA-PEG) especially synergized with PDT has high toxicity on 4T1 cells and tumor by enhancing the catalase-/peroxidase-like activities to produce O2, O2•− and •OH, and increase the intracellular free radicals. PtCo@Gem-HA-PEG inhibits tumor development by increasing drug accumulation in the tumor and enhancing apoptotic mechanisms through synergistic activity with PDT. Nevertheless, the major organ damage confirmed by the histological method in the long-term application of PtCo@Gem-HA-PEG, makes their application challenging due to permanent catalytic activity. However, results of improved drug permeability based on reduced hypoxia, higher drug retention, and enzyme-like activity that could be synergized with other therapeutic approaches like a PDT, have made their use attractive. Hence, this study provides a promising path in the TNBC treatment by nanozymes, which requires further toxicological investigations.Graphic Abstract

Reactive oxygen species (ROS)-induced apoptosis is a promising treatment strategy for malignant neoplasms. However, current systems are highly dependent on oxygen status and/or external stimuli to generate ROS, which greatly limit their therapeutic efficacy particularly in hypoxic tumors. Herein, we develop a biomimetic nanoflower based on self-assembly of nanozymes that can catalyze a cascade of intracellular biochemical reactions to produce ROS in both normoxic and hypoxic conditions without any external stimuli. In our formulation, PtCo nanoparticles are firstly synthesized and used to direct the growth of MnO 2 . By adjusting the ratio of reactants, highly-ordered MnO 2 @PtCo nanoflowers with excellent catalytic efficiency are obtained, where PtCo behaves as oxidase mimic and MnO 2 functions as catalase mimic. In this way, the well-defined MnO 2 @PtCo nanoflowers not only can relieve hypoxic condition but also induce cell apoptosis significantly through ROS-mediated mechanism, thereby resulting in remarkable and specific inhibition of tumor growth.

The development of low-Pt bifunctional electrocatalysts with excellent performance for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is critical for the advancement of the hydrogen economy. Here, we have integrated low-loading Pt and Co metals into N, S doped porous carbon nanosheets to obtain composite catalysts encapsulating PtCo alloy nanoparticles (PtCo2@Co 9 S 8 / N -CNS and PtCo2@ N -CNS). The acquired PtCo nanoparticles, with dimensions of about 2.5 nm, are uniformly distributed and firmly anchored in N, S doped carbon nanosheets with large specific surface areas and rich pore structure, forming multiple active centers and effectively preventing the aggregation of metal nanoparticles. The PtCo2@Co 9 S 8 / N -CNS and PtCo2@ N -CNS display high ORR catalytic mass activity of 1.65 A mg Pt -1 and 1.01 A mg Pt -1 in 0.1 M HClO 4 . The PtCo2@ N -CNS catalyst exhibits excellent HER performance in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , with a mass activity (at 50 mV) 4.3 times higher than that of Pt/C. The PtCo2@Co 9 S 8 / N -CNS and PtCo2@ N -CNS also exhibit stronger ORR and HER stability than Pt/C after accelerated durability tests. The superior catalytic activity performance of catalysts can be attributed to the synergistic effect of multiple active centers of PtCo, Co 9 S 8 and Co-N in the catalysts. The confinement of PtCo nanoparticles by Co metal and N, S doped porous nanosheets derived from graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) as the template, which can effectively prevent the corrosion and migration of the catalysts under acidic conditions, enhances the catalytic stability of the materials. This study provides a new perspective for the development of economical and efficient bifunctional low-Pt catalysts.

Intensified electrochemical corrosion under high-temperature and phosphoric acid conditions poses a significant challenge to the catalysts in high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFCs). Herein, a S, P-doped hierarchical porous carbon nitride (S, P-HCN) supported PtCo alloy catalyst was developed to address this issue. The multilayered porous structure of S, P-HCN ensures high metal dispersion, a large specific surface area, and enhanced mass transfer. The PtCo/S, P-HCN catalyst exhibits remarkable performance, with specific activity (1.27 mA cm Pt -2 at 0.80 V), mass activity (0.51 mA µg Pt -1 at 0.80 V), and electrochemical active surface area (ECSA) (39.9 m 2 g -1 Pt ), surpassing commercial 20 % Pt/C by 2–3 times. Durability tests over 5000 potential cycles reveal excellent retention of mass activity (84 %) and specific activity (83.2 %) at 0.80 V, with only a minor 14 mV shift in half-wave potential. This enhancement stems from the synergistic effects between PtCo alloy nanoparticles and S, P-HCN, which modulate Pt- electronic structure, strengthen metal-support interactions, and boost catalytic efficiency. Single-cell HT-PEMFC studies demonstrate a peak power density of 377.4 mW cm −2 for PtCo/S, P-HCN, comparable to commercial Pt/C (398 mW cm −2 ), with reduced voltage degradation at low current densities. This work presents a promising approach for improving cathode materials and advancing HT-PEMFC performance.

Highly ordered Pt alloy structure is an effective method to improve the catalytic activity and stability of cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in acidic media, which is of great significance for the large-scale commercial application of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Herein, a highly efficient and durable catalyst composed of structurally ordered PtCo alloys with nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) shells is designed by improving the impregnation reduction method, using an intermediate self-sacrificial template strategy. Under the optimal preparation conditions of 20 wt% doped Ketjen black and a calcination temperature of 850 °C, the ordered PtCo alloy-based catalyst (denoted as L 1 0 -PtCo/ZNC) is obtained with an average nanoalloy size of about 3.9 nm and uniformly loaded on the N-doped carbon support via pyrolysis of cobalt-based zeolite imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) and carbon black. The half-wave potential ( E 1/2 ) of L 1 0 -PtCo/ZNC reaches 0.927 V vs. RHE, outperforming most of the reported catalysts and the benchmark commercial Pt/C catalyst. Moreover, the mass activity (MA, 1.06 A mg Pt -1 ) and specific activity (SA, 1.03 mA cm -2 Pt ) of L 1 0 -PtCo/ZNC are 7.6 and 4.7 times of those of Pt/C, respectively. The MA and SA values of L 1 0 -PtCo/ZNC after 10,000 cycles are 35 and 23 times of those of Pt/C catalysts, respectively, indicative of the excellent durability of L 1 0 -PtCo/ZNC. This method provides an effective strategy in preparing highly active and stable ordered PtCo alloy-based hybrid catalysts for acid ORR.

Wounds caused by bacterial infections have become a major challenge in the medical field; however, the overuse of antibiotics has led to increased resistance and bioaccumulation. Therefore, it is urgent to develop an antibacterial agent with excellent antibacterial properties and biosafety. Here, we designed an antibacterial platform that combines photothermal and chemical kinetics therapies. Platinum–cobalt (PtCo) bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) were first prepared, and then PtCo@MnO2 nanoflowers were obtained by adding MES buffer solution and KMnO4 to the PtCo bimetallic nanoparticle suspension using ultrasound. When light strikes metal NPs, they can strongly absorb the photon energy, resulting in photothermal properties. In addition, Pt and Co were used as the oxidase mimics, and MnO2 was used as the catalase mimic. In summary, the photothermal capacity of PtCo@MnO2 nanoflowers with rough surfaces can effectively disrupt the permeability of the bacterial cell membranes. Further, by catalyzing H2O2, PtCo@MnO2 nanoflowers can generate large amounts of hydroxyl free radicals, which can damage bacterial cell membranes, proteins, and DNA. In addition, MnO2 can effectively alleviate the hypoxic environment of the bacterially infected areas and activate deep bacteria, thus achieving the goal of complete sterilization. The in vitro and in vivo results showed that PtCo@MnO2 displayed excellent antibacterial properties and good biocompatibility.

Although Platinum (Pt)-based alloys have garnered significant interest within the realm of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs), there still exists a notable dearth in the exploration of the catalytic behavior of the liquid fuels on well-defined active sites and unavoidable Pt poisoning because of the adsorbed CO species (CO ads ). Here, we propose an electronegativity-induced electronic redistribution strategy to optimize the adsorption of crucial intermediates for the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) by introducing the Co element to form the PtCo alloys. The optimal PtCo hollow nanospheres (HNSs) exhibit excellent high-quality activity of 3.27 A mg Pt −1 , which is 11.6 times and 13.1 times higher than that of Pt/C and pure Pt, respectively. The in-situ Fourier transform infrared reflection spectroscopy validates that electron redistribution could weak CO adsorption, and subsequently decrease the CO poisoning adjacent the Pt active sites. Theoretical simulations result show that the introduction of Co optimize surface electronic structure and reduce the d-band center of Pt, thus optimized the adsorption behavior of CO ads . This study not only employs a straightforward method for the preparation of Pt-based alloys but also delineates a pathway toward designing advanced active sites for MOR via electronegativity-induced electronic redistribution.

The electronic conductivity and durability of porous carbon supports can be improved by increasing the degree of graphitization in the material; however, the preparation of highly graphitic porous carbon using conventional furnaces remains a significant challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a universal and highly efficient carbothermal shock strategy that significantly improves the degree of graphitization of porous carbon supports, including bowl-like carbon, hollow carbon spheres, ZIF8-derived carbon, BP2000, and Ketjen EC 300J. Taking bowl-like carbon as an example, we illustrate the synthesis of a graphitized bowl-like carbon (G-BC-S) support and evaluate the performance of PtCo/G-BC-S in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in rotating disk electrodes (RDE) and H 2 /air PEM single cells. PtCo/G-BC-S exhibits faster ORR kinetics than PtCo/BC and Pt/C, with little loss of activity (25%) and only 13 mV of E 1/2 decay after 20000 cycles accelerated stress testing under 1.0–1.5 V vs . a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). The significantly enhanced performance of the PtCo/G-BC-S catalyst arises from the high activity and chemical/structural stability of the PtCo intermetallic nanoparticles and from the high degree of graphitization and well-defined porous structure of the bowl-like carbon support, which confers excellent electrical conductivity and oxygen transport properties. This study provides a reliable and universal strategy for the development of high-performance porous carbon supports for practical applications in fuel cells.
