Cooperation of Dual Organic Spacers and A Site Cations for High-Performance Quasi-2D Ruddlesden–Popper Perovskite Solar Cells

Chunlong Yuan,Zetan Zhang,Shiying Tang,Yunsheng Gou,Pan Zhao,Haimin Li,Hua Yu

Graphical The diversified cation regulation strategy by adjusting both the spacers and A-site cations is developed, which achieving high performance quasi-2D Ruddlesden-Popper  perovskite solar cells via cooperation effect between F-PEA + and FA + . Ruddlesden–Popper (RP) quasi-two-dimensional (2D) perovskites exhibit enhanced stability compared to their three-dimensional (3D) counterparts due to the incorporation of bulky organic spacers. However, their efficiency is relatively low owing to the large exciton binding energy and quantum confinement effects associated with these organic spacers. Herein, a diversified cation regulation strategy is developed by adjusting both the spacers and A-site cations, achieving the fabrication of mixed 4-fluoro-phenethylammonium (F-PEA + )/n-butylammonium (BA + ) and formamidinium (FA + )/methylammonium (MA + ) n = 4 quasi-2D RP perovskite solar cells. Primarily, the introduction of F-PEA + induces an ordered distribution of the film from low-n to high-n phases, resulting in enhanced crystallinity, larger grain size, fewer cracks, and voids as well as high-quality perovskite films with preferred orientation. Furthermore, the incorporation of FA + reduces the bandgap of the perovskite, facilitating exciton dissociation and enhancing carrier transport capabilities. Ultimately, under the cooperation effect, the obvious elevation in the efficiency of NiO x -based (BA 0.9 F-PEA 0.1 ) 2 (MA 0.8 FA 0.2 ) 3 Pb 4 I 13 n = 4 quasi-2D RP perovskite solar cells from 12.51 to 15.68% is achieved. Additionally, the unencapsulated devices retain 80.4% of initial efficiency after 1100 h of heating at 60 °C in ambient air with 40% relative humidity, demonstrating excellent thermal and moisture stability.

Oxide Ion Conduction, Defect Chemistry, and the Conducting Mechanism in Ruddlesden–Popper La2–xMxBaIn2O7–0.5x (M = Ca, Sr, Ba)

Qin Cao,Ruiming Qiu,Libin Lei,Wenda Zhang,Sihao Deng,Jie Chen,Lunhua He,Jungu Xu

Tetragonal La2BaIn2O7 belongs to the stoichiometric n = 2 members of the Ruddlesden–Popper (RP) structure, with La3+ and Ba2+ cations ordered in the rock salt and octahedral layers, respectively. Herein, a series of alkaline-earth-metal-doped materials La2–xMxBaIn2O7–0.5x (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) were prepared by the traditional solid-state reaction method. The results revealed that the substitutions of Ca/Sr/Ba for La introduced oxygen vacancies and led to good oxide ion conduction, e.g., ∼1.21 × 10–3–1.38 × 10–2 S/cm within 600–900 °C for the specimen La1.7Ba1.3In2O6.85, which was more than 2 orders of magnitude higher than the parent material. However, both the parent and acceptor-doped La2BaIn2O7 showed very limited proton conductions. The energetics of defect formation and oxygen vacancy migrations in La2BaIn2O7-based materials was studied through the static lattice and molecular dynamics (MD) atomistic simulations based on the interatomic potential approach. The defect formation energy calculations for the electrons and holes in La2BaIn2O7 rationalized the experimentally observed pure ionic conduction under low pO2 and mixed ionic and p-type electronic conductions under high pO2, respectively. The MD simulations indicated two-dimensional oxygen vacancy migration within the perovskite slab for the acceptor-doped La2BaIn2O7.

A-site element tuning in Nd2NiO4-based Ruddlesden-Popper cathodes: Enhanced electrochemical performance and stability for intermediate-temperature SOFCs

Jingxuan Cao,Junling Meng,Meijing Lu,Xiaotong Wang,Xiaoxue Han,Siqi Li,Na Xu,Lina Zhao

Developing high-performance cathodes for intermediate-temperature SOFCs (IT-SOFCs, 600–800 °C) faces persistent challenges due to sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics and thermal incompatibility issues. In this work, A-site Ba and Pr doping effectively optimizes both the electrochemical performance and stability of Nd 2 NiO 4 -based Ruddlesden-Popper cathodes. Firstly, Nd 1.5 M 0.5 NiO 4 (M = Ba, Pr, Nd) powders were synthesized via a modified Pechini method. Secondly, Rietveld refinement confirmed an orthorhombic structure with Fmmm (No. 69) space group for all compositions. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis revealed that Pr and Ba ion doping effectively increases oxygen vacancy concentration while simultaneously modulating the valence states of Ni and Pr. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed well-developed porous microstructures favorable for gas diffusion. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements demonstrated remarkably low area-specific polarization resistances of 0.104 and 0.072 Ω cm 2 for NPNO and NBNO, respectively, at 850 °C. Distribution of relaxation times (DRT) analysis further confirmed the enhanced ORR kinetics, showing improved performance across all elementary steps including gas adsorption, dissociation, and charge transfer following A-site optimization. Single-cell tests achieved peak power densities of 0.61 and 0.87 W cm −2 for NPNO and NBNO cathodes at 850 °C, respectively. Notably, the cells exhibited exceptional operational stability, attributable to well-matched thermal expansion coefficients between the cathodes and conventional electrolytes. Finally, these findings establish NBNO as a highly promising cathode material for IT-SOFC applications, offering both superior performance and long-term durability.

Boosting the OER via the metal–support interaction and H-bond network: amorphous RuOx on fluorinated Ruddlesden–Popper perovskites

Ziye Feng,Zijie Peng,Yang Xu,Ming Zhang,Junfang Cheng

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is central to water electrolysis for green hydrogen production, where the development of efficient, stable, and cost-effective catalysts remains a key challenge. Ruthenium (Ru)-based catalysts are highly promising for OER, yet their practical deployment is limited by poor stability and low atomic utilization. Here, we report a fluorination-assisted loading strategy to fabricate an amorphous@crystalline composite catalyst, in which amorphous RuOx active species are anchored onto a fluorine-modified Ruddlesden–Popper (R-P) perovskite support (La1.2Sr0.8Ni0.6Fe0.4O4+δFy) to form the catalyst denoted as RuOx@LSNF-F. Fluorination induces robust metal–support interactions via electronegativity differences, stabilizing Ru4+ to balance the activity and stability while constructing an ordered hydrogen-bond network and optimizing the surface wettability. Electrochemical tests in 1.0 M KOH confirm the exceptional OER performance of RuOx@LSNF-F, which achieves an overpotential of 287 mV at 10 mA cm−2, a Tafel slope of 75 mV dec−1, and a double-layer capacitance of 3.7 mF cm−2 while maintaining stable operation for over 100 h, outperforming its non-fluorinated counterpart, the pristine support, and other benchmark Ru-based catalysts. Mechanistic studies reveal that the exceptional performance arises from the synergistic coupling of the adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) and lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM), enabled by the fluorination-engineered interface, while a hydrogen bond network is enhanced on the amorphous RuOx layer to accelerate deprotonation and improve the surface wettability. This work presents a strategy for designing high-performance perovskite-based OER catalysts and advances the understanding of their structure–activity relationships.

Perovskite oxide LaMO3-δ (M = Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) cathode for efficient electroreduction of nitrate

Wen-Jian Yang,Li-Hui Yang,Han-Jun Peng,Si-Hao Lv,Hafiz Muhammad Adeel Sharif,Wei Sun,Wei Li,Cao Yang,Hui Lin

Electroreduction removal of nitrate (NO 3 – -N) is considered as a promising approach to solve its adverse effects on environment and human health, where efficient and cheap catalysts are required. Perovskite-based catalysts showed a versatile catalytic ability for wide range of redox reactions, but seldom applied for NO 3 – -N reduction. Herein, four perovskite oxide cathodes, LaMO 3-δ (M = Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) were prepared and used for the reduction of NO 3 – -N. The Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) type La 2 CuO 4 exhibited the best NO 3 – -N catalytic activity among the four perovskite oxide cathodes, with a removal rate of 11.7 × 10 -3 min −1 . The high selectivity of NH 4 + -N (82.4 ± 2.2%) indicated that NH 4 + -N was the main final product for NO 3 – -N electroreduction at La 2 CuO 4 cathode, but 100% of N 2 selectivity could be obtained with addition of 1000 and 1500 mg/L Cl - as the electro-assisted chlorination process. The mechanism of NO 3 – -N electroreduction occurred by both electron- and H*-mediated pathway, and the oxygen vacancies and redox cycle of Cu(I)-Cu(II)-Cu(I) were proposed as the accommodation sties and direct electron sources for NO 3 – -N reduction. Generally, this study opens a novel avenue for the development of earth-abundant, cost-effective catalyst with effective NO 3 – -N electroreduction.

Enhanced Performance in Quasi-Two-Dimensional Perovskite Photodetectors by Controlling the Formation of a Large N-Phase

Shun Xu,Huafang Zhang,Hong Cui,Haohao Tao,Lingying Cheng,Gencai Pan,Huiping Gao,Zhenlong Zhang,Yanli Mao

Quasi-two-dimensional (2D) Ruddlesden–Popper perovskites (general formula A2Bn–1PbnX3n+1) have received extensive attention in the field of photoelectric detection due to their tunable optical band gap and excellent stability. However, the prepared 2D perovskite films are generally composed of samples with different n values. With the increase of n, the photoelectric performance is improved due to the decreased binding energy, but the thermodynamic stability is decreased. Therefore, it is necessary to find a method that can simultaneously promote the formation of a large n-value perovskite and improve its stability. In this work, we fabricated a photodetector based on the typical quasi-2D perovskite BA2MAPb2I7 (n = 2) and promoted the formation of a large n-phase quasi-2D perovskite in BA2MAPb2I7 by slowing down its recrystallization rate of perovskite through adding a metal–organic framework (ZIF-8) solution on the top of the BA2MAPb2I7 layer. Concurrently, the organic ligands present in ZIF-8 effectively passivated the defects in BA2MAPb2I7 and enhanced its stability. The obtained photodetectors show a high detection rate of 1.03 × 1013 Jones, a high responsiveness of 0.925 A/W, a high switching ratio of 105, and excellent long-term operating stability, light stability, and environmental stability without packaging. This work provides a feasible way to further improve the photoelectric performance and stability of quasi-2D perovskites.

Efficient Green Emission of Circularly Polarized Luminescence from Chiral Ruddlesden-Popper Perovskites Stabilized in Mesoporous Silica with Alloyed Spacer Cations

Siying Yu,Songbing Zhong,Dongming Song,Zixiang Yu,Jiajie Bi,Shijing Yan,Shun Wang,Yihuang Chen,Shuang Pan

The combination of the rigid structure of mesoporous silicon with the potential chiral quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) perovskite properties has opened up a promising avenue for chiral metal halide perovskite materials in the field of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). However, achieving a delicate balance between multiple key parameters such as high figure of merit (FM = luminescence dissymmetry factors (glum) × photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY)) factor and stability has been proven to be a challenging task. Here, we report a simple encapsulation strategy for crafting stable and bright organic-inorganic hybrid CPL-active nanocomposites. The materials utilize the ordered SBA15 template to provide a physical constraint environment for the in-situ growth of chiral quasi-2D perovskite nanocrystals, effectively addressing bromine defects. Meanwhile, the combination of chiral ligand R/S-cyclohexylethylamine and achiral ligand 4-fluorophenethylamine regulates the multi-n phase distribution, which reduces non-radiative recombination to improve PLQY. Moreover, the protection of SBA15 matrix enhances the stability of composite powders against harsh conditions such as light, heat, and environment. The resulting composites can be readily employed in circularly polarized light-emitting diode devices. This research is poised to provide a novel and feasible pathway for the large-scale production of chiral perovskite nanomaterials and their applications in circularly polarized light-emitting technologies.

Improving the Electrocatalytic Activity of a High-Entropy Ruddlesden–Popper Perovskite Air Electrode for Solid Oxide Cells Through Composition Regulation

Jian Zhang,Penghui Yao,Jinpeng Zhang,Tianqi Shao,Zifan Niu,Xuehua Zhang,Dehe Lin,Beibei Yang,Yicheng Zhao,Yongdan Li

One major challenge to the application of solid oxide cell technology is the poor catalytic activity and stability of air electrodes. High-entropy engineering has been considered as a promising strategy to improve the activity and durability of perovskite-derived air electrodes. However, the understanding of the individual contributions of configurational entropy and specific elemental composition to the performance improvement is still insufficient. Herein, the effects of A-site elements and configurational entropy on the performance of Ruddlesden–Popper-structured (La/Sr/Pr/Ba/Ca) 2 Ni 0.5 Fe 0.5 O 4±δ electrodes are investigated. The results demonstrate that the electrocatalytic activity of the electrode is highly related to the reactivity of lattice oxygen. The polarization resistance of the electrode is negatively correlated with the content of Sr and the configurational entropy, and a Sr-rich Sr 0.8 La 0.3 Pr 0.3 Ba 0.3 Ca 0.3 Ni 0.5 Fe 0.5 O 4±δ electrode with a sub-high entropy exhibits the lowest polarization resistance of 0.044 Ω cm 2 at 700°C. A protonic ceramic cell with that air electrode achieves a peak power density of 2.15 W cm −2 in the fuel cell mode and a current density of 2.88 A cm −2 for H 2 O electrolysis under 1.3 V at 700°C. Meanwhile, the air electrode exhibits high stability in CO 2 and H 2 O atmospheres.

Integration of efficient LaSrCoO4 perovskite and polyacrylonitrile membrane to enhance mass transfer for rapid contaminant degradation

Na Yang,Jingchao Yu,Longfei Zhang,Yongli Sun,Luhong Zhang,Bin Jiang

A 2 BO 4 -type perovskite with Ruddlesden-Popper structure performed favorable catalytic activity in the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of organic pollutants than ABO 3 , but the higher forming temperature limits its further application. In this work, a series of A-site Sr doped La 2 CoO 4-δ perovskites were prepared and used for the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC). The introduction of Sr lowered the formation temperature of the perovskite and improved the catalytic capability. The LaSrCoO 4 perovskite with 50 % Sr doping possessed the best TC degradation efficiency (complete degradation in 14 min). Besides, to overcome the mass transfer limitation caused by catalyst powder agglomeration and the difficulty of recovery, perovskite powder catalysts were embedded in polyacrylonitrile (PAN) ultrafiltration membrane by phase conversion method. The resulting PAN/LSC catalytic separation membranes achieved efficient degradation of TC due to the partial increase in the concentration of contaminants inside the membrane pores. The membrane embedded with 5 wt% LaSrCoO 4 perovskite degraded 94 % TC in 3 min, which improved over 24 % compared to the perovskite powder. The catalytic degradation mechanism of TC and the toxicity of the intermediates were then analyzed. The effectiveness of catalytic membranes in practical applications was also evaluated. Overall, PAN/LSC membranes provide the potential for rapid purification of organic wastewater.

Multilayered Ruddlesden–Popper perovskite hybrids with alternative organic spacers of 4-XC6H4C2H4NH2 (where X = H, Br, Cl) for solar cell applications

Gan Xiaoyan,Zhao Wenhui,Xu Tianye,Liang Yun,Guo Liling,Liu Hanxing

Two-dimensional (2D) organic–inorganic perovskite hybrid materials with enhanced stability have attracted wide attention in optoelectronic field in recent years. Efforts of exploring new 2D perovskites with various organic or inorganic components have been devoted to further improve their solar cell efficiencies. In this work, three structurally similar spacer cations of phenylethylammonium (PEA), 4-bromophenylethylammonium (BPEA) and 4-chlorophenylethylammonium (CPEA) are selected to prepare multilayered 2D perovskites. It is found that the introduction of halogen atoms in the organic cations positively influences the film quality, light absorption, charge transport, device performance and moisture stability of the resulting perovskites. The (BPEA) 2 (MA) 4 Pb 5 I 16 and (CPEA) 2 (MA) 4 Pb 5 I 16 perovskites exhibit efficiencies of 7.38% and 10.88%, respectively, which are much higher than that of (PEA) 2 (MA) 4 Pb 5 I 16 (3.98%). Owning to the larger size and bigger electronegativity of halogen atom in spacer cations, the PCE of unsealed BPEA- and CPEA-based 2D perovskite devices maintains 73% and 63% of their original efficiency after 720 h exposure to 60% humid air, while the PEA-based 2D device decreases to 52% of its initial PCE. Our work demonstrates new insight to modify the quality and stability of 2D perovskite hybrids, highlighting the validity of molecule design of organic cations in improving the efficiency and stability of 2D perovskite solar cells.

Direct Observation of Competition between Amplified Spontaneous Emission and Auger Recombination in Quasi-Two-Dimensional Perovskites

Minghuan Cui,Chaochao Qin,Yuanzhi Jiang,Mingjian Yuan,Liuhong Xu,Didi Song,Yuhai Jiang,Yufang Liu

Quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) Ruddlesden–Popper perovskites (RPPs) have been reported recently as laser media. The carrier dynamics of lasing in quasi-2D RPP films is still controversial. This work presents the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) at room temperature based on the solution-processed quasi-2D (PEA)2Csn–1PbnBr3n+1 (⟨n⟩ = 3–5) thin films. Transient absorption spectroscopy was conducted to demonstrate the accumulation of excitons and population inversion for ASE caused by the energy transfer process along cascade quantum wells. The competition between the ASE and Auger recombination processes was observed via systematic and quantitative studies on the carrier dynamics. It is found that the contribution of Auger recombination is reduced by decreasing the temperature or adjusting the domain distribution of the quasi-2D RPP films, in order to achieve lower thresholds. This work re-emphasizes the importance of Auger recombination control for achieving low-threshold electrically or continuous-wave driven lasers and deepens the fundamental understanding of charge carrier dynamics of lasing in quasi-2D perovskite films.

Heterogeneity in the Mo doped La0.55Sr0.45FeO3 cathode for direct CO2 electrolysis

Debo He,Wenji Ruan,Jibiao Li,Jiupai Ni,Chengsheng Ni

The large-scale integration of intermittent renewable energies into the power grid could reduce the CO 2 emission from the combustion of fossil fuel, but it requires energy storage techniques to balance the energy production and demand. The electrolysis of CO 2 that converting electricity into chemicals/fuels provides a sustainable way of energy storage and CO 2 reduction. Solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) operating at around 800 °C was able to provide highly efficient transformation of CO 2 because the high temperature was able to decrease the energy demand and increase the activation of CO 2 than room temperature electrolysis. In this study, Mo-doped ferrite perovskite , La 0.55 Sr 0.45 Fe 0.85 Mo 0.15 O 3 , was studied as the cathode of an SOEC for the direct electrolysis of CO 2 at 800 °C. Cell with La 0.55 Sr 0.45 Fe 0.85 Mo 0.15 O 3 cathode showed a significantly higher current density during CO 2 electrolysis than the one with La 0.55 Sr 0.45 FeO 3 cathode. Compared with the parent La 0.55 Sr 0.45 FeO 3 cathode that will subject to a superficial decomposition into Fe 0 and SrO or SrCO 3 at an elongated cathodic bias of − 1.4 V, Mo-doping will induce the production of Ruddlesden-Popper phase ( e.g. (La,Sr) 2 (Mo,Fe)O 4 , Fe-Mo-O oxides and Fe 0 ). La 0.55 Sr 0.45 Fe 0.85 Mo 0.15 O 3 cathode was found to an unobvious current decrease at − 1.1 V, but a cell degradation was found under a high bias of − 1.4 V. During the 97 h’ aging under a cathodic bias (−1.4 V), the reduced molybdenum cation in La 0.55 Sr 0.45 Fe 0.85 Mo 0.15 O 3 was found to be less mobile than Fe 3+/2+ , La 3+ or Sr 2+ , and the perovskite with Fe-deficit region were also found to be important for the activation of CO 2 and dissociation of CO in the electrochemical process.
