Preparation of aerogel-like SiOC ceramic with honeycomb structure and its high-temperature performance

Hao Wang,Wenxia Zhu,Xiaoliang Sun,Dong Su

Development of lightweight ceramic aerogel with enhanced thermal insulation and high temperature resistance is required in the field of thermal insulation. Here, a aerogel-like SiOC ceramic with honeycomb structure was prepared by solvothermal method using polyhydromethylsiloxane (PHMS) as precursor and divinylbenzene (DVB) as cross-linker followed by freeze-drying and pyrolysis. The pore size and homogeneity of the honeycomb structure could be further controlled by the content of DVB through adjusting the crosslinking degree of the PSO wet gel. The aerogel-like SiOC possessing uniform honeycomb structure with the pore size of 20–50 µm and the wall thickness of 3–6 µm is obtained at the mass ratio of DVB:PHMS of 2:1. The aerogel-like SiOC exhibits low density (0.14 g·cm − 3 ) and low thermal conductivity (0.0577 W·m −1 ·K −1 ). Moreover, it maintains the honeycomb structure after high temperature treatment at 1400 °C in argon and 800 °C in air indicating its good thermal stability. This work provides a novel route for the preparation of the aerogel-like SiOC ceramic with honeycomb structure and designable overall performance, further expanding its application in thermal insulation.

SiOC films on C/C composite prepared by chemical vapor deposition with hexamethyldisilazane precursor

Xiumei Wu,Shu Yu,Yunping Li

Silicon oxycarbide (SiOC) films on C/C composite substrate were prepared by isothermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) with hexamethyldisilazane (HMDSN) as precursor. The deposition rate, microstructure, composition and mechanical properties of films prepared at deposition temperature ranging from 1300 K to 1576 K were investigated in details. With increasing deposition temperature, deposition rate increased gradually and reached a maximum value of 42.9 μm/h at 1513 K and then decreased; concurrently, the surface morphology of SiOC film changed from a smooth-dense to a coarse cauliflower, and then into a needle-like granular morphology. The SiOC films were composed of dominant SiC and a few other phases at all temperatures. In addition, the contents of oxygen-enriched units SiO 3 C and SiO 2 increased with deposition temperature due to redistribution reaction of Si –O and Si –C bonds and oxidation . SiOC films prepared at 1373 K showed the highest hardness and elastic modulus for 28.8 GPa and 234.2 GPa, respectively. SiOC films also contained small amounts of Si 3 N 4 and SiCN at all conditions.

Nano-turbostratic carbon-decorated SiOC ceramic aerogels with ultra-broadband electromagnetic wave absorption properties

Jianhao Zhang,Jian Zou,Quan Li,Yang Wang,Sheng Cui,Jian Yang,Jianping Li

As thermal insulation-electromagnetic wave absorption (EMA) integrated materials, ceramic aerogels’ thermal properties have been extensively investigated, whereas their EMA properties have not. In this work, nano-turbostratic carbon-decorated SiOC ceramic aerogels were fabricated by pyrolyzing polysiloxane modified with divinylbenzene (DVB). Investigations were conducted into the effects of DVB content on the compositions, microstructures, and EMA properties of SiOC ceramic aerogels. Our research uncovered that SiOC ceramic aerogels contained ultrafine nano-turbostratic carbons (around 5 nm), resulting in abundant interface and defect polarizations. SiOC ceramic aerogels with excellent EMA properties at both small (<5 mm) and large (up to 40 mm) thicknesses were obtained by adjusting the DVB content. The reflection loss and effective absorption bandwidth of SiOC ceramic aerogels were -65.6 dB and 6 GHz at a sample thickness of 2.45 mm, while the effective absorption bandwidth widened to 11.2 GHz at 40 mm. The EMA mechanism of SiOC ceramic aerogels was discussed.

A superelastic SiOC@carbon ceramic spring for multifunctional pressure sensor in wide temperature range

Zhiwei Chen,Dong Su,Wenxia Zhu,Xiaoliang Sun,Xiaolei Li,Huiming Ji

With the flourishing development in space exploration and human motion detection, the wide-temperature flexible pressure sensors are urgently required in various complex application situations. One massive challenge of current available sensors is to enhance the oxidation resistance property, which is crucial for their applications in high-temperature environments. Herein, we fabricated a superelastic silicon oxycarbide @carbon (SiOC@C) ceramic spring, possessing a porous lamellar and spring-like structure. The spring-like structure tends to deform and absorb the energy under the external loads, and then the anisotropic lamellar structure can effectively and uniformly release the stress. The as-prepared SiOC@C spring exhibits excellent superelasticity, high compressibility (60%), and robustness (∼99.0% maximum stress retention after 1000 cycles at 50% compression). Meanwhile, the SiOC@C spring-derived sensor possesses a high sensitivity under low pressure (282.46 kPa −1 at < 1.3 kPa), a low detection limit (< 0.098 Pa) and a short response/recovery time (∼12 ms/4 ms). Moreover, benefiting from the high/low-temperature resistance of SiOC nanolayer coated on the carbon framework, the SiOC@C spring-based sensor can function properly at a wide temperature range from − 196 °C to 500 °C, showing the potential application in various fields of biomedical monitoring, space exploration, and automotive industries.

SiOC nanolayers directly-embedded in graphite as stable anode for high-rate lithium ion batteries

Ze Wu,Xinqun Cheng,Dong Tian,Tiantian Gao,Weidong He,Chunhui Yang

Silicon oxycarbide (SiOC) has been an attractive anode material for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) owing to its high capacity and structure durability. However, due to its low electronic conductivity, SiOC usually owns poor rate performance and exhibits rapid capacity fading at high current density. For the first time, by combining commercialized graphite flakes with SiOC nanolayers, the pyrolysis product of thermoplastic polyphenylsesquisiloxane (PPSQ) sub-micron spheres, a stable SiOC-nanolayer-embedded graphite (SG) composite is prepared, delivering remarkable rate performances with long-term cyclability. The graphite substrate enhances the electron conduction, and ensures the structure integrity and the SiOC nanolayer serves as a major lithium storage unit with improved rate capability, benefiting from its decreased lithium diffusion pathways. The SG electrode exhibits a lithium diffusion coefficient of ~2.0 × 10 −10  cm 2  s −1 at a fully charged state, a record value of SiOC electrode to this date, and delivers a reversible capacity of ~500 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles without mechanical failure. The work opens up the opportunity for two-dimensional SiOC electrodes to be efficiently-synthesized and utilized in high-rate and high capacity energy storage devices.

In-situ SiC nanowires reinforced SiC-based multicomponent ceramic coating for protecting SiOC/CF composites

Junjie Qian,Anze shui,Bin Du,Chao He,Mei Cai,Xinrong Zhong

Continuous carbon fiber (CF) reinforced ceramic composites have been extensively studied owing to their excellent resistance to thermal shock , low density, and low thermal conductivity . However, the weak oxidation resistance of these composites has considerably limited their applications in some aerobic environments. Herein, high-emissivity silicon-carbide (SiC)-based ceramic coating was fabricated on SiOC/CF matrix using a facile vacuum impregnation technology and brush method. The coating reinforced with in-situ grown SiC nanowires could protect the SiOC/CF matrix, and the CFs were not oxidized after 60 min oxidation at 1500 °C.

Microstructural modulation of carbon for enhanced broadband microwave absorption in CNWs/ZrO2 modified SiOC ceramics

Qi Liu,Chunhua Tian,Jun Quan,Hanjun Wei

Carbon materials exhibit significant potential as electromagnetic (EM) wave absorbers; however, their practical application is restricted by excessively high electrical conductivity. To address this issue, a ZrO 2 /SiOC ceramic incorporating a three-dimensional (3D) carbon nanowires (CNWs) architecture is developed using polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) technique. In this design, ZrO 2 nanocrystals and dual-morphology CNWs (twisted/straight) are synergistically integrated within the SiOC matrix, with the pyrolysis temperature regulating the evolution of carbon structures from branched clusters to twisted CNWs and eventually to straight CNWs. Experimental results demonstrate that the CNWs/ZrO 2 /SiOC ceramic (designated as the Zr-Si-2 sample) exhibits a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −35.1 dB at a loading of 40 wt% and a thickness of 4.35 mm. Moreover, an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 5.2 GHz is achieved at a thickness of 2.50 mm. This excellent EM wave attenuation performance is attributed to several key factors, including the abundant nano-interfaces (encompassing both homogeneous and heterogeneous) formed by twisted and straight CNWs within the matrix, intrinsic defects present in both the SiOC matrix and CNWs, lattice distortion in ZrO 2 , and the 3D CNWs architecture. In addition to proposing a novel fabrication method for high-performance microwave absorbers, this study establishes a valuable scientific foundation for materials research and applications in relevant fields.

TiN nanoparticles-decorated SiOC ceramic fibers with electromagnetic wave absorption and optimized infrared stealth properties

Jianhao Zhang,Quan Li,Yi Jia,Yang Wang,Jian Yang

Materials integrating radar absorption and infrared stealth is critical for countering multi-spectra object detection. Although significant progress has been made in electromagnetic wave absorption (EMA) and infrared stealth individually, their combined application remains insufficiently explored. In this study, SiOC@TiN ceramic fibers were fabricated via electrospinning and ammonia nitridation, with the nitridation temperature used to modulate their composition and microstructure. The structural defects in non-stoichiometric Ti/N result in an increased carrier concentration. As a result, electrical conductivity was improved, enhancing conduction loss and reducing infrared emissivity of samples. Moreover, the multiple polarization mechanisms and a porous architecture further contributed to enhanced EMA and infrared stealth performance. SiOC@TiN ceramic fibers achieve a minimum reflection loss of –54.2 dB at 2.17 mm thickness and a maximum absorption bandwidth of 4.4 GHz at 1.79 mm. SiOC@TiN ceramic fibers showed low infrared emissivity (0.69 in 3–5 μm and 0.70 in 8–14 μm bands) and good thermal insulation. This research provides a practical strategy for designing dual-functional materials that simultaneously achieve efficient electromagnetic wave absorption and infrared stealth.

Breaking barriers in energy storage: 3D printed SiOC/Bi2O3 nanocomposites for high-performance asymmetric supercapacitors

Ali Asghar,Muhammad Shahid Rashid,Muhammad Saqib,Karim Khan,Zhiyuan Liu,Changyong Liu,Zhangwei Chen

The quest for sustainable energy storage solutions has led to the development asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs) that promise high specific power and energy. However, the challenge lies in synthesizing electrode materials that can meet these demands while maintaining stability. Herein, we introduce a paradigm-shifting approach by harnessing the power of direct ink writing (DIW) 3D printing to fabricate SiOC/Bi 2 O 3 nanocomposites for ASCs. Through a facile hydrothermal synthesis, we prepared SiOC/Bi 2 O 3 nanocomposites that, when 3D printed (3DP), delivered an impressive energy density of 98.2 Wh/kg and a power density of 882.4 W/kg at 1 A/g. These ASCs exhibited remarkable cyclic stability, retaining 95.55 % of their capacitance after 5,000 cycles. The synergy between the high surface area of DIW-printed SiOC/Bi 2 O 3 and its capacitive properties satisfies the high-voltage profile requirement and enhances both specific power and energy. Our study paves the way for a new generation of ASCs with superior electrochemical performance, offering a sustainable and environmentally friendly solution to the future of energy storage. This work stands at the forefront of merging advanced material science with cutting-edge manufacturing techniques, showcasing the potential of 3D printing to revolutionize the energy storage landscape.

A Nanostructured Si/SiOC Composite Anode with Volume-Change-Buffering Microstructure for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Ze Wu,Weiqiang Lv,Xinqun Cheng,Jinlong Gao,Zhengyi Qian,Dong Tian,Ji Li,Weidong He,Chunhui Yang

Graphical Expanding into the gaps : Combining Si and SiOC nanoparticles in appropriate proportions affords an electrode material with superior properties as an anode for lithium-ion batteries. The voids between the particles accommodate the volume changes of Si during cycling (see figure). Si/SiOC composites are promising high-capacity anode materials for lithium-ion batteries since the SiOC matrix can effectively buffer the volumetric change of Si during cycling. However, a structure of Si nanoparticles (NPs) enwrapped by a continuous SiOC phase typically shows poor cyclic stability and low charge/discharge rate due to structure failure of bulk SiOC shells derived from carbon-rich organosilicon. To address this issue, in this work, an Si/SiOC nanocomposite with volume-change-buffering microstructure, in which Si NPs are uniformly dispersed in a matrix of SiOC nanospheres, has been synthesized. Our results show that the space between Si and SiOC NPs can accommodate the large volume change of Si during cycling and facilitate infiltration of the electrolyte. The nanostructured SiOC skeleton serves as both a mechanically robust buffer to alleviate the intrinsic expansion of Si and an effective electron conductor. The Si/SiOC NP composite displays significantly increased capacity and cyclic stability compared with pure SiOC, and delivers reversible capacities of around 800 mA h −1 g −1 at a current density of 100 mA g −1 (approximately 100 % capacity retention after 100 cycles) and around 600 mA h −1 g −1 at 500 mA g −1 (capacity retention about 80 % after 500 cycles).

SiOC nanolayer wrapped 3D interconnected graphene sponge as a high-performance anode for lithium ion batteries

Zhiyuan Sang,Zhihao Zhao,Dong Su,Peishuang Miao,Fengrui Zhang,Huiming Ji,Xiao Yan

Silicon oxycarbides (SiOCs) are promising anode materials for high-energy LIBs because of their high theoretical capacity. However, due to their intrinsically poor electronic conductivity, the battery performance is often restricted. Herein, high performance anodes are demonstrated by designing a hierarchical 3D interconnected structure using graphene sponge as a scaffold. The graphene sponge was infiltrated with a polysiloxane precursor and further converted into porous frameworks consisting of multi-layered sandwich-like nanosheets (SiOC@graphene@SiOC) by subsequent pyrolysis. The deliberate structure not only improved the electrical conductivity, accelerated ion insertion, and shortened the ionic diffusion distance but also enabled full utilization of SiOC active sites in the anode. The 3D-GNS/SiOC anodes exhibited excellent electrochemical performance, including high initial discharge capacity (1280 mA h g−1 at 0.1 A g−1), high reversibility and stability (701 mA h g−1/371 μA h cm−2 after 100 cycles) and extreme rate performance (656 mA h g−1/348 μA h cm−2 at 0.5 A g−1). For full-cells, high initial charge capacity (680 mA h g−1 at 0.5 A g−1) and high stability (416 mA h g−1 at 0.5 A g−1 after 100 cycles) were obtained. Significantly, this simple and scalable method can be extended to fabricate high-rate and long-cycle SiOC or other anode materials for commercial LIBs.

High-resolution, conductive graphene/SiOC array nozzles via continuous vat photopolymerization 3D printing for electrohydrodynamic applications

Daosen Song,Wei Zhou,Guangming Zhang,Yingjun Zeng,Peikai Duan,Shenhao Li,Jinrun Zhang,Qinghua Chen,Mengjie Wang,Yice Wang,Ke Wang,Jiawei Zhao,Quan Xu,Xiaoyang Zhu,Huachen Cui,Hongbo Lan

Multichannel micro/nano-scale printing using arrayed nozzles offers a promising route to enhance the throughput and industrial viability. However, fabricating ultra-small array nozzles that are simultaneously high-precision, electrically conductive, and heat-resistant remains challenging. Here, we report a continuous vat photopolymerization (VPP) 3D printing strategy that exploits two synergistic effects: (i) a reduced-viscosity graphene/polysiloxane slurry achieved via a modified interfacial bonding, and (ii) its pronounced pyrolysis shrinkage. Specifically, sulfuric acid modification introduces –OH groups onto graphene, enabling Si–O–C bonding with Si–OH from the photosensitive polysiloxane slurry. Meanwhile, self-condensation of Si–OH and photopolymerization of C=C bonds form a dense carbon–oxygen–silica network, markedly enhancing slurry stability and uniformity. Furthermore, by harnessing thermal shrinkage together with the oxygen-inhibition-induced “dead zone” during continuous curing, we obtain ultra-small nozzle apertures with smooth inner walls using conventional printing equipment, effectively eliminating the staircase effect. The resulting array nozzles feature a minimum inner radius of 27.79 μm and inter-nozzle inner-radius variation of only 1.15 μm. When applied to multi-material EHD printing, the nozzles produce highly uniform deposits, with the difference in coefficient of variation of linewidth among nozzles reaching as low as 0.34%. This work provides an efficient route to fabricate high-precision, conductive, and thermally stable array nozzles for scalable micro/nano additive manufacturing.
