New SnS@SBA-15 was developed for the efficient adsorption and storage of iodine. • The iodine adsorption capacity was up to 2062 mg/g. • The iodine adsorption mechanism was chemical adsorption (SnS + I 2 → SnI 4 + S). • The retention rate of adsorption product SnI 4 was up to 76.5% after storage for 90 d. • Stable iodine storage was due to the in-situ reconstructed hydrophobic environment. Tin-based materials are expected to be excellent iodine adsorbent, but the stability of the adsorption product (SnI 4 ) poses challenge. Herein, a novel strategy based on the in-situ reconstruction of hydrophobic environment was presented for efficient iodine adsorption and storage. Stannous sulfide@mesoporous silica (SnS@SBA-15) was developed and employed for the adsorption of I 2 gas. The optimal material, SnS@SBA-15–50wt%, exhibited an excellent iodine uptake of 2062 mg/g. The adsorption was attributed to a chemical reaction (SnS + 2I 2 = SnI 4 + S). Notably, the retention rate of SnI 4 was as high as 76.5% after storage in air for 90 days due to the in-situ reconstructed hydrophobic environment. The obtained SnS@SBA-15 exhibited efficient iodine adsorption and excellent storage ability. This work presents a novel strategy to design iodine adsorbents, aimed at addressing the storage challenges of iodine adsorption products susceptible to hydrolysis. Tin sulfides are promising anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) for their high theoretical capacity and fast kinetics for Na storage. However, the severe volume expansion and intrinsically low charge conductivity fundamentally compromise their electrochemical performance. Addressing at the issue, SnS 2 /SnS heterostructures are decorated on three-dimensional graphene nanosheets (3D GNS) framework, which is then shielded with a nanocarbon layer. In this nanocomposite, the SnS 2 /SnS p-n heterostructures induce an internal electric field on the heterointerfaces to promote the charge transfer inside the material, which effectively ensures the rate capability of the material. Moreover, the 3D GNS provides a porous conductive network to accelerate the long-range transport of electron further enhancing its rate performance. Meanwhile, the dual-carbon structure would alleviate the volume expansion of SnS 2 /SnS during cycling, ensuring improved stability. The integration of these merits leads to excellent battery performance for the material, including high reversible capacity, rate capability, and cycling stability. This concept of simultaneously enhancing the ionic, electronic, and mass conductivity as well as the structural stability by combining heterogeneous structures, 3D conductive networks, and protective shields can further shed light on not only SIB materials but also other energy storage materials or devices.

Constructing heterostructures is an effective strategy for the synthesis of high-performance anode electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In this study, a “bubbling” PEGylated deep eutectic solvent (DES) method is utilized to synthesize SnO 2 /SnS heterostructure nanodots anchored on carbon nanosheets (SnO 2 /SnS@CN). A comprehensive investigation of the physical and chemical processes during the “bubbling” reaction offers in-depth insights into the underlying mechanism of the PEGylated DES approach. The carbon nanosheet structure enhances the electrical conductivity between SnO 2 particle units and, due to its excellent mechanical properties, significantly contributes to material stability. The nanodot configuration of the heterostructure further improves electron transfer and lithium-ion (Li + ) migration within the SnO 2 units. The SnO 2 /SnS@CN material exhibits outstanding Li + storage performance, achieving a high capacity of 675.6 mA h/g at 1 A/g after 1000 cycles. These findings establish a theoretical foundation for preparing heterostructure anode materials using the “bubbling” PEGylated DES method.

Among the tin-based composites, stannous sulfide (SnS) is a prospective material to serve as an anode for lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) owing to its high theoretical-capacity, layer-structure for fast Li+ diffusion paths, and low toxicity. However, severe volume expansion/shrinkage exfoliates the electrode coating, leading to the severe loss of active materials. Herein, free volume was introduced into SnS to relieve the sequelae of volume expansion/shrinkage creatively, which effectively improved the cyclability of the SnS-based anode. The as-synthesized SnS/G-15% exhibited overall optimal electrochemical performances, i.e., the highest reversible capacity and best cyclability over pure SnS, SnS/G-5% and SnS/G-25%. Ex situ scanning electron microscopy images also illustrated that no cracks were generated in the cycled SnS/G-15% electrode. This work highlights an efficient and cost effective approach for the synthesis of long-cycle life and high-cyclability anodes.

Metal sulfide-based gas sensors have the advantage of high sensitivity at room temperature, enabling high integration and low power consumption. However, a trade-off between low baseline resistance and good long-term stability at room temperature still needs to be addressed. Therefore, a single-atom Ce-targeted regulation strategy for p-SnS/n-SnS 2 was proposed. By doping different amounts of Ce, the amount and size of SnS quantum dots on the surface of SnS 2 can be regulated. Furthermore, Sn-S-Ce bonds are formed by combining single-atom Ce with SnS, which effectively hinders the growth and oxidation of SnS quantum dots, as evidenced by STEM, XPS, DFT, FTIR and EAXFS methods. Due to the unique energy band structure of p-SnS and n-SnS 2 , Ce-doped SnS quantum dots serve as electronic sensitizers, effectively increasing the carrier concentration in SnS 2 . The optimal gas sensor based on the 1% Ce-doped SnS/SnS 2 composites enables high sensitivity (with a response of 22.1 to 1 ppm NO 2 ), ultralow detection limit (1 ppb), excellent long-term stability at room temperature, and a lower baseline resistance. This engineering strategy of metal sulfide semiconductor heterostructures through single-atom targeted regulation provides new insights for further optimizing the composite system.

Sodium metal battery (SMB, NMB) anodes can become dendritic due to an electrochemically unstable native Na-based solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Herein Li-ion activated tin sulfide graphene nanocomposite membrane (A-SnS–G) is employed as an artificial SEI layer, allowing cyclability of record-thin 100 μm Na metal foils. The thin Na metal is prepared by a self-designed metallurgical rolling protocol. A-SnS–G is initially placed onto the polypropylene (PP) separator but becomes in situ transferred onto the Na metal surface. Symmetric metal cells protected by A-SnS–G achieve low-overpotential extended high-rate cycling in a standard carbonate electrolyte (EC : DEC = 1 : 1, 5% FEC). Accumulated capacity of 1000 mA h cm−2 is obtained after 500 cycles at 4 mA cm−2, with accumulated capacity-to-foil capacity (A/F) ratio of 90.9. This is among the most favorable cycle life, accumulated capacity, and anode utilization combinations reported. Protection by non-activated SnS–G membrane yields significantly worse cycling, albeit still superior to the baseline unprotected sodium. Post-mortem and dedicated light optical analysis indicate that metal swelling, dendrite growth and dead metal formation is extensive for the unprotected sample, but is suppressed with A-SnS–G. Per XPS, post-100 cycles near-surface structure of A-SnS–G is rich in metallic Sn alloys and inorganic carbonate salts. Even after 300 cycles, Li-based SEI components ROCO2-Li, Li2CO3 and LiF are detected with A-SnS–G. As a proof of principle, an SMB with a high mass loading (6 mg cm−2) NVP cathode and a A-SnS–G protected anode delivered extended cyclability, achieving 74 mA h g−1 after 400 cycles at 0.4C.

Tin monosulfide (SnS) anodes have attracted much attention for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their excellent chemical stability, high theoretical specific capacity and outstanding reversibility. However, the slow kinetics and large volume expansion of intrinsic SnS electrodes in the conversion reaction process restrict their application to a certain extent. To address the poor conductivity and volume fluctuation, N-doped double-carbon-layer protective hierarchical structures decorating SnS nanotubes (N-DCSNs) are introduced by in situ polymerization directed using a g-C3N4 soft template. Particularly, N-doped double carbon layers provide fast transport channels for electrons and ions, affording decent conductivity and rapid ionic diffusion rate. Most importantly, the volume expansion of SnS during the charge–discharge cycles can be buffered owing to the confinement effect of the double carbon layer. Synergistic effects of N-DCSNs enhance the mechanical integrity and electrochemical kinetics during the charge–discharge process, leading to high-capacity retention and long-term stability properties. As a remarkable anode for LIBs, the N-DCSN electrode delivers high capacities of 911.5 and 511.3 mA h g−1 at 0.2 and 1.0 A g−1 after 270 and 1000 cycles, respectively. The feasible and versatile structure design can offer new ideas for the preparation and regulation of other transition metal sulfide anode materials, and provide a relevant experimental basis for the further development of lithium/sodium storage equipment.

The sensitive detection and efficient removal of heavy metal ions with high toxicity and mobility are of great importance for the environmental monitoring and control. Here, a novel SnS-decorated Bi 2 O 3 nanosheets heterostructure was synthesized via a facile hydro/solvothermal strategy. The as-prepared SnS-Bi 2 O 3 nanocomposites presented impressive merits of the high surface area, mesoporous channels and fast electron transfer for the electrochemical reactions . And the synergistic interaction between SnS and Bi 2 O 3 significantly improved the “deposition-stripping” process involving electron transfer, mass diffusion and phase transition. With the unique characteristics, the SnS-Bi 2 O 3 nanocomposites exhibited improved sensitivity and robust stability on the electrochemical detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II) with low LODs of 1.50 nM and 1.40 nM, respectively, and were successfully applied on the detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II) in tap water and lake water samples. Furthermore, the electrochemical removal performance towards Cd(II) and Pb(II) was achieved as well. These SnS-Bi 2 O 3 nanocomposites could serve as an efficient platform on the detection and removal of heavy metal ions in environmental electrochemistry .

SnS and SnS 2 are two promising anode materials with excellent theoretical capacity for Sodium ion batteries . However, severe volume collapse and low electric charge conductivity dramatically affect the electrochemical performance of SnS and SnS 2 . As a consequence, SnS-SnS 2 heterostructures are constructed to improve the conductivity of the anode material. The volume effect is prevented by compounding with Graphene Oxide (GO) to ensure cyclic stability and improve the initial coulombic efficiency of anode materials. The first-principles simulation is used to simulate SnS, SnS 2 , SnS-SnS 2 and SnS-SnS 2 @GO respectively, and the comparison is made through actual experiments. Experimental studies indicate that SnS-SnS 2 @GO processes superior conductivity and cycle stability, unique nano-flake structure and the composite modification of GO can restrain the volume effect and ensure long cycle stability of the anode material (450.6 mAh·g −1 after 100 cycles). Moreover, attributing to the p-n heterostructures, the internal charges transfer and improve the electrical conductivity of SnS-SnS 2 can be promoted obviously. Simultaneously, it has been detected that the multilayer SnS-SnS 2 heterostructures combining GO effectively improve the conductivity and ensure good structure stability. Therefore, SnS-SnS 2 @GO composites can be considered as an ideal anode material for sodium ion batteries.

Tin monosulfide (SnS) is known as a prospective anode material for lithium/sodium ion batteries due to its high capacity, low cost, and easy preparation. Carbon coating is a powerful strategy to improve poor electronic conductivity and alleviate the large volume expansion of the SnS, thus achieving high electrochemical performances. However, the commonly used carbon coatings strategies usually generate interstices between the SnS and carbonaceous material , interrupting electron and ion transfer and unsatisfied accommodation of volume expansion. Herein, point-cavity-like carbon coated SnS nanotubes (CN/SnS) were synthesized by a close-knit mechanism using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) as carbon sources. The carbonyl group in PVP can form hexahydroxylated stannyl compound with Sn 2+ , and the amine group can generate C N bond with the g-C 3 N 4 template in an aqueous solution, respectively. The unique construction of CN/SnS can successfully reinforce the electron and ion transfer capability and accommodate volume expansion. The reformative effectivity dramatically improves the energy storage properties of SnS electrode for LIBs/SIBs. The CN/SnS electrode can deliver high specific capacities of 547.7 mAh g −1 at 1.0 A g −1 after 300 cycles for lithium-ion batteries and 298.2 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 after 200 cycles for sodium-ion batteries, respectively. The structure design is practical and feasible, which could be used to develop high-performance transition metal sulfide/carbon composite anodes for LIBs and SIBs.

Graphical Two for the price of one : Hollow spheres consisting of in situ generated SnS nanosheets (SnS@C HSs) conformally coated with S-doped carbon are fabricated using polystyrene spheres as the self-sacrifice template and carbon source. Thanks to the unique structure, the SnS@C HSs exhibit excellent performance for both lithium- and sodium-ion batteries. Although tin sulfide is a promising anode material for lithium- and sodium-ion batteries due to the layered structure and high theoretical capacity, the large volume expansion and poor kinetics have seriously hindered further development and application. In this work, hollow spheres consisting of in situ generated SnS nanosheets (SnS@C HSs) conformally coated with S-doped carbon are fabricated using polystyrene spheres as the self-sacrifice template and carbon source. The SnS@C HSs with a large SnS interlayer distance, S-doped carbon matrix, and hollow structure not only relieve the pressure caused by volume expansion during cycling, but also promote fast transfer of lithium/sodium ions leading to a high pseudocapacitance. The SnS@C HSs have excellent electrochemical properties in both LIBs and SIBs such as high capacity, high rate, and outstanding cycling stability. The use of a self-sacrifice template is demonstrated to be a convenient and efficient strategy to design and prepare carbon-coated metal hollow spheres for efficient energy storage and conversion.

In this work, light detectors utilizing p-type tin monosulfide (p-SnS) few layers with an Au/SnS/Ag Schottky structure are demonstrated. These detectors exhibit broad-spectrum light detection capabilities spanning the visible to near-infrared (NIR) wavelength range. Notably, under NIR 850 nm illumination, the detectors exhibit exceptional photodetection performance with an ultrahigh responsivity of up to 1652.87 $\text{A}\cdot \text{W}^{-{1}}$ , an extremely specific detectivity of $8.05\times 10^{{12}}$ cm $\cdot $ Hz $^{\text {1/{2}}}\cdot \text{W}^{-{1}}$ , and a rapid response time of approximately 6.5 ms. These characteristics surpass those of most 2-D materials-based detectors and even outperform commercial InGaAs (Hamamatsu, InGaAs G8370-85) and Silicon (Hamamatsu, Si S9119-01) detectors. The remarkable photoresponse is attributed to the SnS/Ag Schottky structure, which facilitates the separation of excited electron–hole pairs. Our findings suggest a promising route for developing high-performance optoelectronics based on p-SnS.
