Ultrasound Reversible Response Nanocarrier Based on Sodium Alginate Modified Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles

Li Xiaochong,Wang Zhanhua,Xia Hesheng

Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) covered by polymer coatings, cross-linked by weak coordination bonds were expected to present a reversible responsiveness under on-off ultrasound stimuli. Herein, we prepared a sodium alginate (SA) modified MSN with carboxyl-calcium (COO−-Ca2+) coordination bonds in the modified layer, which could block the mesopores of MSN and effectively prevent the cargo from pre-releasing before stimulation. The coordination bonds would be destroyed under the stimulation of low intensity ultrasound (20 kHz) or high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU, 1.1 MHz), leading to a rapid and significant cargo release, and then they could be reformed when ultrasound was turned off, resulting in an instant cargo release stopping. The reversible cleavage and reformation of this coordination bonds under on-off ultrasound stimulus were confirmed by the gel-sol transition behaviors of the SA-CaCl2 gels. An excellent real-time control of rhodamine B (RhB) release performance was obtained under the ultrasound stimuli. Obviously, the cargo release ratio could reach to nearly 40% when HIFU (80 W) was turned on for 5 min, and remained basically constant when ultrasound was turned off, which would finally reach to nearly 100% within 30 min under this on-off pulsatile status. These hybrid MSN based nanoparticles with excellent reversible ultrasound on-off responsiveness were of great interest in on-demand drug delivery applications in the future.

Low–temperature superelastic, anisotropic, silane-crosslinked sodium alginate aerogel for thermal insulation

Fucheng Guan,Shi Feng,Jianbin Sun,Qiang Yang,Yihang Zhang,Zheng Li,Jing Tao,Xinbin Ji,Yonghe Wang,Da Bao,Jing Guo,Sen Zhang

Bio-aerogels have attracted much attention owing to their remarkable properties, but their brittle and poor elasticity has limited their further applications. Here, we propose a strategy of in-situ silanization crosslinking combined with unidirectional freeze casting (SUFC) to prepare superelastic sodium alginate (SA) aerogels. The resulting aerogel was ultra-light (0.048 g/cm 3 ), high porosity (96.86 %), and self-extinguishing from fire. Aerogels exhibited anisotropic properties, such as low-temperature elasticity (500 g compression at −70 °C 10-cycle, 99.6 % recovery), exceptional fatigue resistance (100-cycle at 50 % strain), and excellent thermal insulation (0.0696 W·m −1 ·K −1 ). Thus, the SUFC strategy provides considerable freedom for constructing multi-material, lamellar/honeycomb structured alginate-based aerogels, which pave the way to thermal insulation development at low temperatures.

Integration of CdS particles into sodium alginate aerogel with enhanced photocatalytic performance

Dandan Hao,Quanhao Shen,Ju Liu,Lingfei Wei,Rehana Bibi,Bo Fu,Naixu Li,Jiancheng Zhou

In the present work, CdS nanoparticles were integrated into sodium alginate aerogel matrix through a facile method. The CdS particles were successfully incorporated into the network of sodium alginate and highly distributed. Moreover, the accessibility of pore structures of sodium alginate was well-preserved. The resulting hybrid aerogels demonstrated high photocatalytic ability towards Cr (VI) reduction. SA/CdS-2 (mass ratio SA: CdS = 1:2) exhibited the highest reduction efficiency of Cr (VI), which could reduce the concentration of Cr (VI) to 0 mg/L after 60 min illumination. A probably adsorption-photoreduction mechanism was proposed and discussed in detail. The aerogels had excellent reusability and recyclability, avoiding secondary pollution. This work holds a promise to design and fabrication of CdS particles into three-dimensional aerogel network.

Microencapsulation of Ginger Volatile Oil Based on Gelatin/Sodium Alginate Polyelectrolyte Complex

Lixia Wang,Shiwei Yang,Jinli Cao,Shaohua Zhao,Wuwei Wang

The coacervation between gelatin and sodium alginate for ginger volatile oil (GVO) microencapsulation as functions of mass ratio, pH and concentration of wall material and core material load was evaluated. The microencapsulation was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). SEM and FT-IR studies indicated the formation of polyelectrolyte complexation between gelatin and sodium alginate and successful encapsulation of GVO into the microcapsules. Thermal property study showed that the crosslinked microparticles exhibited higher thermal stability than the neat GVO, gelatin, and sodium alginate. The stability of microencapsulation of GVO in a simulated gastric and an intestinal situation in vitro was also studied. The stability results indicated that the release of GVO from microcapsules was much higher in simulated intestinal fluid, compared with that in simulated-gastric fluid.

Biocompatible octacalcium phosphate/sodium alginate/silk fibroin composite scaffolds for bone regeneration

Jiwen Chen,Huajun Wang,Yunjun Wu,Youjie Liu,Yiwan Shi,Changshun Chen,Huige Hou,Zhengang Zha,Xiaofei Zheng,Tingting Wu

The repair of bone defect, especially large bone defect remains as a significant clinical challenge. In the present study, we fabricated a novel scaffold OCP/SA/SF which was a composite of octacalcium phosphate (OCP), sodium alginate (SA) and silk fibroin (SF). The SEM images showed that it was porous sponge-like and the pore sizes were suitable for the ingrowth of cells and facilitated nutritions and fluids exchange. FTIR spectra and XRD showed characteristic absorption peaks of the OCP and SF of the scaffolds. In vitro swelling and degradation showed good water-binding and biodegradable ability of the scaffolds. Compressive stress test showed that the compressive strength of the scaffolds increased gradually as the OCP contents increased. HA deposition onto the surface of the scaffolds was seen by SEM after 14 days of soaking the scaffolds in SBF. The cultivation of mBMSCs on the scaffolds for 1 day and 7 days showed good biocompatibility through CCK8 assay, SEM and CLSM images. Osteogenic differentiation genes detection showed osteogenic genes ALP , OC, COL1 and OPN were all upregulated when mBMSCs and the scaffolds were cocultured for 7 days and 14 days. In conclusion, this kind of scaffolds showed good mechanical, biocompatible and biodegradable properties, and were nontoxic to mBMSCs. It can promote proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of mBMSCs. Accordingly, it might be a promising biomaterial for the clinical application of bone defect.

Sodium Alginate Enabled Advanced Layered Manganese-Based Cathode for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Hang Xu,Kezhu Jiang,Xueping Zhang,Xiaoyu Zhang,Shaohua Guo,Haoshen Zhou

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are promising candidates applied to large-scale energy storage systems owing to abundant sodium resources and high economic efficiency. Layered manganese-based oxides as a prevailing cathode for sodium-ion batteries have been extensively studied, where doping or coating has been demonstrated to improve the electrochemical performance. However, the binder that tends to be the popular poly(vinylidene difluoride), is revealed to generate swellability upon cycling, leading to electrode material cracks and disconnection with current collectors. For the above issues, in this work, environmentally friendly sodium alginate is utilized as the aqueous binder in a conventional layered transition-metal oxide cathode P2-Na2/3MnO2 for SIBs. Through credible comparative experiments, sodium alginate is testified to play an essential role in suppressing cracks on the surface of materials, preventing surge in charge-transfer resistance and restraining detachment between electrode and current collector. Therefore, sodium alginate is proved to be an ideal binder to match with P2-Na2/3MnO2, where some issues existed before, as a promising cathode material with excellent performance and low cost. This study displays that improving battery performance by exploring suitable binder systems can equal or even exceed the performance improvement through modification of the material itself, and this perspective of enhancement should not be ignored.

Chitosan-hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and sodium alginate bilayer edible films for chestnut preservation

Mengyu Liu,Peiying Zhang,Yanwen Wu,Jie Ouyang

To address the challenge of preserving fresh chestnuts, chitosan (CS), hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), nisin (N), and sodium alginate (SA) were utilized in the preparation of a bilayer edible film named CS-HPMC-N/SA, which was compared to the monolayer films CS-HPMC and CS-HPMC-N. In comparison to the CS-HPMC film, the CS-HPMC-N and CS-HPMC-N/SA films exhibited increased water vapor permeability (WVP), oxygen permeability, and thickness, while transparency, tensile strength (TS), and elongation at break (EAB) were reduced. The bilayer film CS-HPMC-N/SA showed higher WVP, transparency, thickness, and EAB, but lower TS than the monolayer film CS-HPMC-N. The chestnuts coated with CS-HPMC-N/SA showed lower respiratory intensity and decay rate compared to those coated with CS-HPMC and CS-HPMC-N. These results suggested that the bilayer film CS-HPMC-N/SA, containing nisin, has potential as an edible material for preserving fresh chestnuts.

Insight and mechanisms of tetracycline adsorption on sodium alginate/montmorillonite composite beads

Po-Hsiang Chang,Raj Mukhopadhyay,Binoy Sarkar,Yun-Cheng Mei,Chih-Hsun Hsu,Yu-Min Tzou

The presence of antibiotics in soil and water raises great health concerns because they may increase the development of harmful antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In this study, composite beads prepared from 2:1 or 1:1 ratios of montmorillonite (Mt) and sodium alginate (SA) were used to adsorb tetracycline hydrochloride (TC), an antibiotic commonly found in aqueous systems. The equilibrium time for TC adsorption onto the Mt/SA was 8 h, and the kinetic data were consistent with the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption isotherm was described with the Langmuir equation. The maximum amounts of TC adsorbed were 745, 689, and 445 mg g −1 for the 2:1- and 1:1-Mt/SA and the original Mt, respectively. The Mt/SA composite beads exhibited porous structures ; however, this did not play a key role in TC removal, as previously reported. Cation exchange was the major adsorption mechanism, and electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding between the SA and TC also contributed to TC adsorption on the Mt/SA composite beads. In addition, the migration of a small amount of TC into the inner spaces of the beads led to the intercalation of the TC in the Mt interlayers and enhanced TC adsorption by the Mt/SA composite beads.

Hierarchically Porous Mg-MOF-74/Sodium Alginate Composite Aerogel for CO2 Capture

Xiaoqian Peng,Jing Zhang,Jinqiang Sun,Xiaochan Liu,Xinfu Zhao,Shimo Yu,Zhipeng Yuan,Sijia Liu,Xibin Yi

One of the most promising methods for capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) is solid physical adsorption, which is an efficient and simple technique. The key to effective CO2 capture is the development of high-performance solid adsorbents with excellent CO2 adsorption capacity, CO2/N2 selectivity, and rapid adsorption/desorption kinetics. In this paper, a Mg-MOF-74/sodium alginate composite aerogel was prepared by loading Mg-MOF-74 on sodium alginate sheets followed by directional freeze-drying. The composite aerogel exhibited a hierarchical porous structure, in which sodium alginate provided an open mesoporous/macroporous structure that promoted diffusion and contact with the active center of CO2. The Mg-MOF-74 micropores/mesopores promoted the strong interaction between CO2 and the adsorbent in the micropore and rapid mass transfer of CO2 to the adsorbent through the mesopores. The experimental data showed that MSA-6 achieved CO2 adsorption of 2.461 mmol·g–1 at 298 K. Furthermore, the CO2/N2 adsorption selectivity of MSA-6 reached 35.108, indicating its strong CO2 selective adsorption potential.

Colorimetric porous microspheres of natural sodium alginate for chilled pork visual monitoring

Xueyan Yun,Wenjin Chen,Jiatao Zhang,Tungalag Dong

Chilled meat is subject to deterioration by various factors during storage and distribution. Therefore, it is very important to monitor the quality of meat in real time. This study aims at preparing a natural, low-cost indicating microsphere to visualize the freshness of meat by the combination of sodium alginate (SA) and chitosan with 0–10 wt% anthocyanins derived from chokeberry as a colorant using ionic gelation method. Size-controlled porous SA microspheres with were further constructed by freeze-drying and their physicochemical properties were characterized by SEM, FTIR , DSC , and XRD. Results showed that microspheres with 1 wt% anthocyanin showed good responsiveness to different concentrations of ammonia and were able to effectively identify the freshness of chilled meat by color change. Principal component analysis showed that the color difference of the porous microspheres was highly significantly correlated with pH, TVB-N, total plate count and thiobarbituric acid active substance ( p  < 0.01), suggesting a visible satisfactory capability of the microspheres to identify the spoilage in pork. Superwetting Ti3C2TX MXene membranes intercalated with sodium alginate for oil/water separation

Kun Hou,Hu Zhou,Ke Zhu,Chunye Xie,Simin Liu,Yingxiang He,Xingyi Zhu,Ming Wu,Tiefan Huang

Oily wastewater seriously endangers human health. Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene has attracted extensive attention as a building block for separating membranes because of its unique two-dimensional structure and excellent hydrophilicity. In this study, we constructed a superwetting Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene membrane intercalated with sodium alginate. The hydrophilic sodium alginate not only enlarged the nanochannel of the MXene membrane but also decorated the membrane surface and endowed the membrane with excellent surface superwetting properties. The underwater oil contact angle (OCA) was about 151°, indicating an extremely low adhesion between oil and membrane surface. The membrane could also separate a series of oil-water emulsions with high separation efficiency and flux. Due to its excellent underwater superoleophobicity, the membrane demonstrated outstanding antifouling property. Excellent separation performance was maintained even after separation cycles. This work provides insights into the rational use of MXene-based membranes design and demonstrates its potential in the field of membrane separation.

Stretchable and sensitive sodium alginate ionic hydrogel fibers for flexible strain sensors

Ruiping Tong,Zhihui Ma,Ping Gu,Rui Yao,Tengfei Li,Mingshun Zeng,Fazhan Guo,Linfeng Liu,Junfei Xu

Ionic conductive hydrogel fibers based on natural polymers provide an immense focus for a new generation of electronics due to their flexibility and knittability. The feasibility of utilizing pure natural polymer-based hydrogel fibers could be drastically improved if their mechanical and transparent performances satisfy the requirements of actual practice. Herein, we report a facile fabrication strategy for significantly stretchable and sensitive sodium alginate ionic hydrogel fibers (SAIFs), by glycerol initiating physical crosslinking and by CaCl 2 inducing ionic crosslinking. The obtained ionic hydrogel fibers not only show significant stretchability (tensile strength of 1.55 MPa and fracture strain of ∼161 %), but also exhibit wide-range sensing, satisfactorily stable, rapidly responsive, and multiply sensitive abilities to external stimulus. In addition, the ionic hydrogel fibers have excellent transparency (over 90 % in a wide wavelength range), and good anti-evaporation and anti-freezing properties. Furthermore, the SAIFs have been easily knitted into a textile, and successfully applied as wearable sensors to recognize human motions, by observing the output electrical signals. Our methodology for fabrication intelligent SAIFs will shed light on artificial flexible electronics and other textile-based strain sensors.
