In this work, a novel and sensitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) strategy was designed for protein kinase A (PKA) detection, comprising carbon microsphere (CMS) modified ITO electrode, TiO 2 as the phosphate group recognition material and graphite-carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) as photoactive material. For the first time, gold nanoparticle decorated zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (Au-ZIF-8) was employed to fabricate biosensor for PKA activity assay with the function of substrate peptide immobilization and signal amplification. Firstly, substrate peptides were assembled on the Au-ZIF-8/CMS/ITO surface through the covalent bonding between the gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and sulfydryl groups of the peptides. Then, in the presence of ATP , phosphorylation of the substrate peptide was achieved under PKA catalysis. Finally, TiO 2 -g-C 3 N 4 composites were further modified on the electrode surface based on bonding between TiO 2 and phosphate groups created via phosphorylation of the peptide (yielding TiO 2 -g-C 3 N 4 /P-peptide/Au-ZIF-8/CMS/ITO), which is different with our previous work by directly immobilizing g-C 3 N 4 composite on electrode surface. The developed method showed a wide linear range from 0.05–50 U mL −1 . The detection limit was 0.02 U mL −1 (S/N = 3). The constructed biosensor exhibited high detection specificity for PKA. In addition, the wide applicability of this biosensor was demonstrated by evaluating the inhibition ability of ellagic acid towards PKA.

A novel photoelectrochemical (PEC) assay is developed for sensitive detection of protein kinase A (PKA) activity based on PKA-catalyzed phosphorylation reaction in solution and signal amplification strategy triggered by PAMAM dendrimer and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). In this strategy, it is noteworthy at this point that PKA phosphorylation was achieved in solution instead of on the surface of the electrode, which has advantages of the good contact in reactants and simple experimental procedure. For immobilizing the phosphorylated peptide (P-peptide) on electrode surface, graphite-like carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) complex is synthesized and characterized, which plays a significant role for TiO2 conjugating phosphate groups and g-C3N4 providing PEC signal. Subsequently, PAMAM dendrimer and ALP can be captured on P-peptide and TiO2/g-C3N4 modified ITO electrode via interaction between the -COOH groups on the surface of PAMAM dendrimer and the -NH2 groups of peptide and ALP, which can lead to the increase of ALP amount on the modified electrode surface assisted with the PAMAM dendrimer. As a result, the amount of ALP catalyzes of L-ascorbic acid 2-phosphate trisodium salt (AAP) to produce electron donor of ascorbic acid (AA), resulting in an increased photocurrent. The proposed detection assay displays high selectivity and low detection limit of 0.048 U/mL (S/N = 3) for PKA activity. This biosensor can also be applied for the evaluation of PKA inhibition and PKA activity assay in cell samples. Therefore, the fabricated PEC biosensor is potentionally well in PKA activity detection and inhibitor screening.

Particulate matter (PM) pollution has posed a severe threat to the environment and human health. Especially for submicron-level fine particulate PM 0.3 , it is still difficult to achieve high-efficiency filtration. Herein, we loaded TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 (TCN) heterojunction photocatalyst on polystyrene/polyacrylonitrile (PS/PAN) multiscale nanofiber membranes by a simple one-step blending electrospinning technique. Due to the strong long-range electrostatic force of the built-in electric field, the composite membrane has a remarkably enhanced filtration effect under light. Even under harsh conditions with a high PM 0.3 concentration of more than 1,800,000 m −3 and a high flow rate of 25 L/min, it still has a high filtration efficiency of greater than 98.5%, an increase of about 20% compared with dark conditions, and the pressure drop is only low to 94 Pa. More importantly, the electrostatic field can be regenerated with light, and this preparation strategy can be effectively extended to other photocatalyst heterojunctions.

Z-type 2D/2D C, N, S co-doped TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 (DTCN) photocatalysts possessing high catalytic activity were prepared via a simple ultrasonic recombination method. The catalysts’ microscopic morphology, crystal structure, chemical composition, and optical properties were investigated with scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and ultraviolet–visible tests. The photocatalytic activity was also assessed via the degradation of the organic pollutant RhB. The results showed that DTCN could achieve 85.3% degradation of the target pollutant within 60 min, which was 2.47 times (34.5%) and 1.76 times (48.5%) more than TiO 2 and g-C 3 N 4 . The first-order kinetic constants of DTCN reached 0.02838, which was 4.11 and 2.66 times that of TiO 2 and g-C 3 N 4 . Nonmetallic C, N, S (CNS) co-doping effectively improved sunlight utilization of TiO 2 nanosheets through the generation of impurity bands in the forbidden band area. The Z-type heterojunction formed via the coupling of g-C 3 N 4 and CNS–TiO 2 promoted the separation of photoinduced carriers and improved the charge transfer efficiency, boosting the TiO 2 photocatalytic performance. Furthermore, the 2D–2D heterojunction provided a high-speed transport channel for charges. Graphical Abstract Z-type 2D–2D DTCN nanosheet heterojunctions were successfully fabricated. Nonmetallic CNS co-doped effectively improved sunlight utilization of TiO 2 nanosheets through the generating of impurity bands in the forbidden band area. Furthermore, the Z-type heterojunction formed via the coupling of g-C 3 N 4 and CNS–TiO 2 promoted the photoinduced carrier separation and improved the charge transfer efficiency, so boosting the TiO 2 photocatalytic performance.

Abstract A new strategy to enhance the photocatalytic properties of graphitic carbon nitride is reported via constructing an effective NiO decorated Ti/TiO 2 NT/TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 S-scheme heterostructure photocatalyst thin film (Ti/TiO 2 NT/TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 /NiO). This thin film photocatalyst can separate hydrogen gas and oxygen gas into different sides of the Ti substrate. Owing to the synergistic effect of the NiO as co-catalyst and the formation of Step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunction between g-C 3 N 4 and TiO 2 , the electrons and holes were successfully separated to their opposing active centers, which is beneficial to inhibiting the recombination of the charge carriers. The gas evolution rate of Ti/TiO 2 NT/TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 /NiO is 7.97 μmol h −1 cm −2 under the irradiation of high-pressure mercury lamp, which was 3 and 1.3 times as high as that of the Ti/TiO 2 NT/g-C 3 N 4 and Ti/TiO 2 NT/TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 , respectively. Firstly, benefiting from the well-matched band structure, a direct S-scheme Ti/TiO 2 NT/g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction thin film is constructed easily driven by the built-in electric field across the Ti/TiO 2 NT/g-C 3 N 4 interface. Furthermore, the introduction of the TiO 2 layer on the TiO 2 NT will broaden light absorption range and increase the heterojunction area, which in turn conduces to effective charge separation. In addition, NiO as a co-catalyst cannot only accelerate the charge separation but also provide plentiful catalytic sites and decompose H 2 O 2 produced by g-C 3 N 4 . The thin film photocatalysts can be recycled again, which is different from traditional powdered photocatalysts. This work constructs a NiO decorated Ti/TiO 2 NT/TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 S-scheme heterostructure photocatalyst thin film, and provides a new insight to promote photocatalytic activity of g-C 3 N 4 under the synergetic impact of S-scheme heterostructure and NiO co-catalyst. Graphic Abstract

With the continuous development of the chemical industries, synergistic removal of carbon and nitrogen contaminants has drawn much attention. In this work, a novel strategy for the synergistic removal of methyl orange (MO) and nitrate was developed in a single reactor by combining a TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 nanosheet/graphene photoanode and denitrifying biofilm cathode. Under xenon light illumination, the photocatalytic MO decolorization rate exceeded 90% (the initial concentration of MO was as high as 100 mg·L −1 ) with a biocathode potential bias of −0.5 V vs Ag/AgCl; additionally, the decolourization rate apparently followed first-order kinetics with a constant of 0.11 ± 0.02 h −1 . The improved MO decolourization rate was mainly because the biocathode effectively enhanced the charge separation of the photogenerated charge at the TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 nanosheet/graphene photoanode interface. In the meantime, the effluent nitrate was lower than 1 mg·N·L −1 at a biocathode potential of −0.5 V vs Ag/AgCl. The results indicated that the coupled biocathode-photoanode system could serve the purpose of simultaneously degrading MO and accomplishing nitrate reduction. Considering the sustainability of sunlight and the use of a biocathode, the coupled biocathode-photoanode system is a promising alternative for the simultaneous removal of biorefractory organics and nitrate.

A novel visible-light-driven carbon dot (CDs)/TiO2/g-C3N4 photocatalyst was successfully synthesized by doping CDs in TiO2 nanoparticles and the surface of g-C3N4 nanosheets via a facile hydrothermal process and was confirmed by characterization methods. UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) revealed that CDs/TiO2/g-C3N4 showed obvious additional absorption in the 370–450 nm region. DMPO spin-trapping ESR spectra demonstrated the existence of O2˙− and ·OH. The photocatalytic activity of the CDs (1.0 wt%)/TiO2/g-C3N4 was remarkably enhanced as compared to that of the single components (TiO2 and g-C3N4) and double component (TiO2/g-C3N4) towards the degradation of enrofloxacin (ENX) under visible-light irradiation. About 91.6% of ENX was decomposed by CDs (1.0 wt%)/TiO2/g-C3N4 in 1 h, which is nearly 3.95 times, 4.82 times, and 1.69 times that for TiO2, g-C3N4, and TiO2 (90.0 wt%)/g-C3N4, respectively. Scavenging experiments revealed that O2˙− and ·OH played key roles during the photocatalytic degradation of ENX. This study provides a simple and convenient method to modify materials with enhanced photocatalytic performance, and the CDs/TiO2/g-C3N4 catalyst is efficient, stable, and reusable for environmental practical applications.

Developed crystal phase-tunable Cu-TiO 2 @g-C 3 N 4 with excellent photoelectric property. • Synergistic MIP-heterojunction system enabled efficient recognition of DOP. • The DOP sensor exhibited a very wide linear range and a femtomolar detection limit. • The new sensor has been successfully applied to detect DOP in the real samples. Di-n-octyl phthalate (DOP), a pervasive endocrine-disrupting contaminant in food packaging, plastic products, and aquatic systems, poses severe threats to ecosystem stability and human health. This work proposed a novel molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-integrated photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing strategy for ultra-selective detection of DOP based on a rationally designed crystal phase tunable Cu 2+ -doped TiO 2 @g-C 3 N 4 composite. By lattice-doping TiO 2 with Cu 2+ to generate impurity energy levels, it was possible to precisely tune its band structure and narrow its bandgap. Subsequently, the obtained Cu-TiO 2 was hybridized with two-dimensional g-C 3 N 4 through energy-level matching, forming a tightly coupled structure at the heterojunction, which had strong interactions and thus opened up directional charge separation and transport channels. The precisely controlled heterogeneous and interfacial properties of the Cu-TiO 2 @g-C 3 N 4 matrix were confirmed through characterization methods such as SEM, TEM, HRTEM, XPS and XRD. The fabricated sensor achieved an extremely wide linear detection range of 10 fM to 1 nM, with an ultra-low limit of detection down to 5.30 fM, alongside exceptional anti-interference capability and practical reliability in real sample assays. This study delivered a low-cost, easily miniaturized PEC-MIP platform for trace DOP monitoring, opening up a new high-performance approach for on-site food safety screening and environmental water quality assessment.
