Pyrogallol adhesion and mineralized bionic hybrid layer decorating UHMWPE fiber for enhancing the interfacial and mechanical properties

Kui Wang,Lu Shen,Xiang Ji,Jiale Gong,Chenchen Cui,Jiahong Xie,Liang Hong

An organic–inorganic bionic hybrid layer was created to improve the interfacial and mechanical properties of ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber-reinforced epoxy (UHMWPE/Epoxy) composites by utilizing the adhesion of pyrogallol and the mineralization of Cu 2+ ions. The findings indicated that the effective application of the hybrid layer introduced a significant quantity of polar groups and inorganic Cu 3 (PO 4 ) 2 particles. Mineralization treatment remarkably increased the fiber’s surface energy from 20.64 mN/m to 31.24 mN/m, achieving 51 % improvement in wettability. The interfacial interactions between the organic–inorganic hybrid layer and epoxy resin were markedly enhanced, increasing the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) from 2.38 ± 0.28 MPa to 7.62 ± 0.74 MPa. Compared with the pristine composite, the modified UHMWPE/Epoxy exhibited up to 63 %, 69 %, and 113 % improvement in mechanical performance, interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), and transverse fiber bundle tension (TFBT), respectively. Upon application of an external force, the bionic hybrid layer facilitated numerous deflections and intricate crack paths at the interface. As a result, a uniform and swift force transmission was established from the epoxy resin to the fiber.

Ballistic performance of UHMWPE laminate/modified aramid fabric composite structure based on support vector machine (SVM) method

Xu Yaojie,Zhang Hong,Huang Guangyan

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers are extensively utilized in personal protective equipment owing to their lightweight and superior properties. Recent research has demonstrated that the protective efficacy of UHMWPE laminates decreases when subjected to high-temperature projectile impacts. This study proposes a novel composite structure comprising modified aramid fabric and UHMWPE laminate. Ballistic testing results reveal that the new compliant composite exhibits a 25.6% higher ballistic limit velocity ( v bl ) compared to pure UHMWPE laminate, while also demonstrating significantly enhanced flexibility. The modified aramid fabric effectively shields the UHMWPE laminate from high-temperature erosion. Leveraging dimensionless algorithms and support vector machine methodologies, the module distribution of the composite structure has been further optimized. The v bl of optimized composite fabric is 40.4% higher than that of UHMWPE laminate. Parameters such as transverse wave velocity, yarn friction coefficient, and tensile strength influence the arrangement order within the composite structure. The simulation error for the composite fabric is approximately 10%. The failure characteristics observed in numerical simulations closely align with experimental results, indicating that the optimized composite structure further enhances its impact resistance performance through a combination of factors, including tensile strength improvement, transverse wave velocity optimization, and yarn friction coefficient improvement.

Surface modified UHMWPE fibers with functional interfacial layers: a strategy for enhanced composite interfacial and mechanical performance

Yan Wang,Xianhui Dong,Na Li,Yan Wang,Yinjun Chen,Junrong Yu,Zuming Hu,Meifang Zhu

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber is prized for the superior strength and modulus. Nevertheless, the smoothness of fiber surface and the absence of polar functional groups in polymer backbone result in poor interfacial adhesion with matrix of composites. This severely decreases the mechanical performance and impedes the practical applications of UHMWPE fiber-reinforced composites. To optimize the interfacial compatibility between UHMWPE fiber and matrix, a series of amphipathic polymer brush PVA-OCT oligomer and multi-armed molecule DiPE-OCT with various functional groups herein as interfacial modification agents were synthesized. These functional groups form tight interaction with UHMWPE fiber and matrix through the mechanical interlocking and hydrogen bonding interactions, respectively. After modification by interfacial modification agents, UHMWPE fiber-reinforced composites exhibited a significant enhancement in the interfacial bonding and mechanical properties. Notably, an enhancement of 158.1 % in interfacial shear strength (6.35 MPa) was achieved in modified UHMWPE fiber-reinforced epoxy composites compared to the control composite. Meanwhile, the flexural and tensile strengths of modified composites increased by 107.4 % and 53.3 %, respectively. Consequently, this study provides a facile and innovative method for the surface modification of UHMWPE fiber and remarkably reinforces UHMWPE fiber composites, actuating the industrial application of UHMWPE fiber composites.

Influence of interfacial condition on rheological instability behavior of UHMWPE/HDPE/nano-SiO2 blends in capillary extrusion

Liu Lichao,Wang Fei,Xue Ping,Wang Suwei

In this study, rheological behaviors and capillary extrusion flow instabilities of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)/high-density polyethylene (HDPE)/SiO 2 composites containing modified nano-SiO 2 or pure nano-SiO 2 are investigated. Effects of interfacial conditions between the dispersed nano-SiO 2 phase and PE matrix on rheological behaviors are analyzed. The results show that modified nano-SiO 2 in the PE matrix has a relatively strong interfacial interaction with the polymer chains compared with pure nano-SiO 2 , thus causing a more pronounced shear thinning behavior and reducing extrudate swell during capillary extrusion. Nanocomposite extrudates experience the transition of smooth- sharkskin- oscillating distortion—overall melt fracture with the increase of shear rate (or shear stress). The interfacial interaction allows a more storage of elastic energy as the melt flow through the die, resulting in sharkskin distortion and oscillating distortion to occur prematurely at critical shear rates. It also restricts the elastic recovery of the melt after leaving the die, thus delaying sharkskin distortion under shear stress. At high shear rates, the modified nano-SiO 2 particles begin to roll, and some of the unmodified particles move and embed to the wall. It is believed that the interfacial adsorption effect and the wall-slip effect of nanoparticles exist simultaneously in the whole extrusion process.

High Oxidation Stability of Tea Polyphenol-stabilized Highly Crosslinked UHMWPE Under an in Vitro Aggressive Oxidative Condition

Yue Ren,Xin Wei,Song-Tao Wei,Fei-Yu Wang,Jing Wang,Jia-Zhuang Xu,Lu Xu,Rizwan M. Gul,Zhong-Ming Li

Background Synovial fluid components, especially lipids, can trigger oxidation of ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) artificial joint components in vivo. The use of antioxidants such as vitamin E effectively diminishes the oxidative cascade by capturing free radicals and reducing the oxidation potential of UHMWPE implants. Using a thermo-oxidative aging method, we recently found that tea polyphenols can enhance the oxidation resistance of irradiated UHMWPE in comparison with commercial vitamin E. However, it is yet unknown whether tea polyphenols can reduce lipid-induced oxidation. Questions/purposes We explored whether tea polyphenol-stabilized UHMWPE would exhibit (1) lower squalene absorption; (2) stronger oxidation resistance; and (3) lower content of free radicals than vitamin E-stabilized UHMWPE under a physiologically-motivated in vitro accelerated-aging model. Methods Tea polyphenol (lipid-soluble epigallocatechin gallate [ ls EGCG]) and vitamin E were blended with UHMWPE powders followed by compression molding and electron beam irradiation at 100 and 150 kGy. Small cubes (n = 3, 60 mg, 4 × 4 × 4 mm 3 ) cut from the blocks were doped in squalene at 60°, 80°, 100°, and 120° C for 2 hours. Gravimetric change of the cubes after squalene immersion was measured to assess absorption. Thin films (n = 3, ∼60 μm) were also microtomed from the blocks and were doped at 120° C for 24 hours. Oxidation induction time (n = 3, 5 mg of material from the cubes) and incipient oxidation temperature (n = 3, thin films) were obtained to determine the oxidation stability. Signal intensity of the free radicals, obtained by electron spin resonance spectroscopy, was used to qualitatively rank the antioxidant ability of vitamin E and ls EGCG. Results Squalene absorption was comparable between ls EGCG/UHMWPE and vitamin E/UHMWPE at a given temperature and radiation dose. The oxidation induction time of 100 kGy-irradiated UHMWPE was increased with ls EGCG compared with vitamin E except at 120° C. For example, the oxidation induction time value of 100 kGy-irradiated ls EGCG/UHMWPE immersed at 60 o C was 25.3 minutes (24.2–27.8 minutes), which was 8.3 minutes longer than that of 100 kGy-irradiated vitamin E/UHMWPE which was 17.0 minutes (15.0–17.1 minutes) (p = 0.040). After squalene immersion at 120° C, the incipient oxidation temperature of 100 and 150 kGy irradiated ls EGCG/UHMWPE was 234° C (227–240° C) and 227° C (225–229° C), which was higher than vitamin E-stabilized counterparts with value of 217° C (214–229° C; p = 0.095) and 216° C (207–218° C; p = 0.040), respectively. The electron spin resonance signal of 150 kGy irradiated ls EGCG/UHMWPE was qualitatively weaker than that of 150 kGy irradiated vitamin E/UHMWPE. Conclusions ls EGCG-stabilized UHMWPE demonstrated higher oxidation resistance than vitamin E-stabilized UHMWPE after squalene immersion, likely because ls EGCG donates more protons to eliminate macroradicals than vitamin E. Clinical Relevance Our in vitro findings provide support that ls EGCG may be effective in protecting against oxidation that may be associated with synovial fluid-associated oxidation of highly crosslinked UHMWPE joint replacement components.

Preparation of reusable UHMWPE/TiO2 photocatalytic microporous membrane reactors for efficient degradation of organic pollutants in water

Guizhen Zhang,Yingying Yu,Yi Tu,Yang Liu,Jintao Huang,Xiaochun Yin,Yanhong Feng

A photocatalytic membrane reactor is an effective method to degrade organic pollutants in water and air. This method has many advantages, such as a complete degradation of organic pollutants, no secondary pollution to the environment, environmental protection, and high efficiency. Thus, how to efficiently manufacture membrane reactors with high catalytic efficiency is essential. In this study, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)/inorganic particle photocatalytic microporous membrane reactors with high porosity and high loading capacity were prepared using a melt-blending method. In the preparation process, UHMWPE, liquid paraffin (LP), and nanoparticles, which acted as a binder, porogen, and photocatalyst, respectively, were completely dispersed and mixed in a self-developed pulsating tensile stress mixer. Then, the LP was extracted to obtain a microporous membrane reactor with high porosity and high loading of inorganic particles. This reactor had the advantages of excellent catalytic efficiency, industrial manufacture and application, recyclable and reusable, and environmental protection. In this study, inorganic titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles were used as photocatalysts to prepare the microporous membrane reactor. The effects of the ratios of UHMWPE to LP, the contents and sizes of inorganic particles, the thickness of the membrane, and biaxial tension treatment on the structure of the membrane reactors and the catalytic efficiency of organic dyes and hormone pollutants in water were studied. Results showed that the photocatalytic microporous membrane reactor with 75% porosity and 80 wt% of TiO 2 had the best photocatalytic performance. Under ultraviolet photocatalysis, the degradation rate of the 20-mg/L methyl orange solution reached 98.5% within 60 min. Moreover, the degradation rate of the methylene blue solution reached 98.4% within 60 min, and that of the 20-mg/L Congo red solution reached 100% within 40 min. Furthermore, the degradation rate of the 50-mg/L tetracycline hydrochloride solution exceeded 96.6% within 80 min.

The Low Friction Coefficient and High Wear Resistance UHMWPE: The Effect of Pores on Properties of Artificial Joint Materials

Chunmin Yang,Junhua Zhang,Honglin Yue,Xueqin Kang

Ultrahigh-molecular-weight-polyethylene (UHMWPE) is extensively applied to make bone and cartilage implants in the field of biomaterial application. UHMWPE matched with a metal or ceramic component withstands the long-term effect of cyclic stress, which induces UHMWPE serious wear, and affects the service life of the artificial joint. This investigation focuses on the influence of pores on the mechanical and tribological property of UHMWPE. The porosity, crystallinity, yield strength, tensile strength, hardness, compression yield strength, creep resistance, wettability, friction performance, and wear mechanism of solid and porous UHMWPE were evaluated and compared. The research results indicated that the pore had a remarkable influence on the mechanical, friction, and wear property of UHMWPE. The porosity of porous UHMWPE was 29.7% when 50 wt. % sodium chloride (NaCl) was added and the pore size was about 200 μm. The crystallinity, hardness, creep resistance, strength, and elongation decreased after NaCl was added and dissolved. However, the yield strength in the tensile and compression test was closer to that of the natural cartilage. The friction coefficient and wear loss of porous UHMWPE were higher than that of solid UHMWPE in dry conditions, but these values of porous UHMWPE were lower than that of solid UHMWPE in the calf serum lubrication condition. The main wear mechanism of porous and solid UHMWPE was abrasive. The lubricity of calf serum reduced wear surface scratches and furrows, especially for porous UHMWPE.

The impact of boron carbide in soft and hard body armor: A comprehensive evaluation on Kevlar and UHMWPE fabrics

Ramzi Makaoui,Oussama Mehelli,Djelel Eddine Tria,Larbi Hemmouche,Abdelmalek Habes,Mehdi Derradji

In this research, an investigation was conducted to ascertain the impact of boron carbide (B 4 C) microparticles on soft and hard armor configurations, utilizing two distinct high-performance fabrics namely, Kevlar and Ultra-high Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE), also this work discerned the optimal fabric for protection against dagger attacks and 9 mm full metal jacket (FMJ) projectiles. Initially, rheological tests on four shear thickening fluid (STF) samples revealed that 70% of nano-silicate (SiO 2 ) content was the optimal ratio. Besides, scanning electronic microscope (SEM) tests showed that B 4 C affected the nano-silicate dispersion. Hence, the use of STF as a matrix, led to complete protection in low-velocity stab test and behavior improvement when subjected to NIJ ballistic test for both fabric types. On the other hand, the dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) of the thermosetting epoxy resin-based composites reinforced by B 4 C indicated that the 10% ratio offered maximum rigidity, resulting in improved ballistic performance. This study revealed that Kevlar fabrics exhibit superior behavior in soft protection, while UHMWPE hard composite display further rigidity against high-velocity impacts. Overall, this work contributes novel insights into the efficiency of B 4 C integration within soft and hard armor configurations using two ballistic fabrics, highlighting their performance characteristics in ballistic shielding. Highlights Investigation of B 4 C microparticles: The research examines the impact of B 4 C microparticles on soft and hard armor configurations. High-performance fabrics: Kevlar and UHMWPE uses. The use of STF as a matrix for soft and thermosetting epoxy resin for hard armor: enhanced composite performance. Low-velocity and high-velocity impact tests investigations; microparticles B 4 C incorporation: superior mechanical characteristics. Remarkable energy absorption: promising shielding uses.

Research on Interface Strengthening and Mechanical Properties of UHMWPE Fiber Composites Modified by Rigid-Flexible Coating and Resin Esterification

Youyou Chen,Honggang Li,Delong Guan,Luyu Sun,Yi Xiao

To address the poor interfacial adhesion of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers caused by their inherent surface inertness, this study presents a dual modification strategy: esterification of the polyethylene resin and construction of a “rigid-flexible” coating on the fiber surface. The “flexible” coating was formed by tannic acid (TA) and tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) via oxidative polymerization, followed by the introduction of amino-functionalized nano-silica (N-SiO 2 ) as a rigid component. The results show that the modified resin can achieve good compounding with the fibers. The stable coating could significantly regulate the surface roughness of the fibers and greatly enhance the adhesion between fibers and resins. Under the optimal conditions (TA:TEPA mass concentration ratio = 2:3, treatment time = 6 h), the interlaminar shear strength, tensile strength, flexural strength, and low-speed impact toughness of the composites increased by 19.52%, 22.54%, 27.55%, and 25.11%, respectively, compared to the unmodified specimens. Incorporation of nano-SiO 2 further enhanced these mechanical properties. This research provides theoretical and technical inspirations for the functional development of UHMWPE fiber composites. Highlights A green and convenient fiber modification scheme was designed. A rigid-flexible coating was constructed on UHMWPE fiber surface. Phenol-amine cross-linking enhanced the coating stability. Active surface and esterified resin jointly enhanced adhesion. Mechanical properties of UHMWPE composites were enhanced.

Towards One-Pot Synthesis of Trimodal HDPE/UHMWPE In-Reactor Blends by CrOx/VOx/CpCr/SiO2 Tri-Metallic Catalysts

Shiyang Wang,Lijia Ding,Ruotong Chen,Yang Yang,Jianhao Guo,Xiaofeng Xue,Ning Zhao,Yibin Zhan,Tiedong Xie,Boping Liu,Yulong Jin

Trimetallic catalysis provides a potential route for the one-pot production of multimodal PE with balanced mechanical and processing properties. Herein, a series of CrO x /VO x /CpCr/SiO 2 trimetallic catalysts are constructed by grafting CrCp 2 onto a CrO x /VO x /SiO 2 with tunable CrCp 2 loadings and benchmarked against mono- and bimetallic catalysts. FT-IR spectroscopy confirmed successful CrCp 2 immobilization, and the catalyst containing 0.25 wt% CrCp 2 exhibited the highest productivity. Owing to the distinct H 2 sensitivities of the three active sites, both molecular weight (MW) and molecular weight distribution (MWD) can be efficiently regulated through CrCp 2 loading and H 2 partial pressure, enabling the synthesis of tri- or broad-modal PE in a single reactor. Compared with unimodal PE of comparable MW, the trimodal PE exhibited lower melt viscosity and an improved stiffness-toughness balance.

Developing CrOx/VOx/Ind2ZrCl2/Silica/TiBA tri-metallic catalysts for controllable synthesis of trimodal UHMWPE/HDPE in-reactor blends

Shiyang Wang,Liting Wei,Xinglong Zhao,Lantian Li,Yuxin Gao,Shuang Chen,Yang Yang,Boping Liu,Yulong Jin

A series of mono-, bi- and tri-metallic catalysts including Ind 2 ZrCl 2 /silica, CrO x /VO x /silica and CrO x /VO x /Ind 2 ZrCl 2 /silica were synthesized for C 2 H 4 polymerization in this work. The results show that conventional cocatalyst TiBA could hardly activate Ind 2 ZrCl 2 /silica. However, under the assistance of the surface species over CrO x /VO x /silica, traces of TiBA (Al/metal <15, molar ratio) endowed the Zr species with moderate activity. The combined results of XPS, FTIR-pyridine-adsorption and DRS Uv–vis show that the Lewis acidic Cr and V sites could interact with Ind 2 ZrCl 2 and improve the electronic deficiency of Zr center, which is possible to promote zirconocene activation, though direct Si-O-Zr linkage was non-negligible, and redox between Cr(VI)/V(V) and zirconocene existed. The Zr species were responsible for ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) synthesis, and the relative content of UHMWPE fractions could be controllably regulated by polymerization temperature, partial pressure of hydrogen and the loading amount of Zr. Generally, these tri-metallic catalysts CrO x /VO x /Ind 2 ZrCl 2 /silica could synthesize trimodal HDPE/UHMWPE in-reactor blends with very broad molecular weight distribution. Meanwhile, owing to the excellent copolymerization ability of zirconcene, preferential distribution of the short chain branches along the ultra-high molecular weight (MW) chains for C 2 H 4 /1-hexene trimodal copolymers was achieved. The rheological results show that the fractions with extreme MW difference in the trimodal polyethylene (PE) exhibited excellent miscibility, and its superiority in processing and mechanical properties over the monomodal PE with similar MW was verified by rheological, tensile and impact tests.

Development of lightweight and highly efficient fast neutrons composites shields based on epoxy, UHMWPE fibres and boron carbide particles

Oussama Mehelli,Mehdi Derradji,Raouf Belgacemi,Slimane Abdous

In a vision to design wearable and lightweight protective thermal neutrons shields, a new hybrid composite was developed from Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibres, epoxy and boron carbide (B 4 C) particles. The hybrid constituents were selected in a way to maximize both the shielding performances and the overall mechanical behaviour. Indeed, two first constituents of the hybrid attenuate the incident neutrons through scattering, while the B 4 C particles mainly interact with neutrons by absorption. More importantly, the UHMWPE fibres, as one of the strongest polymeric fibres, were also chosen to sustain the mechanical loads and provide the requested flexibility. The measurements were performed using an optimized experimental setup at NUR research reactor, Algiers. The effect of the amount of the B 4 C particles was also studied to maximize the shielding ability. The obtained results confirmed the high shielding efficiency of all the developed materials. Meanwhile, the best performance was recorded at B 4 C amount of 10 wt% with a macroscopic cross-section (Σ) of 0.188 cm −1 equivalent to a mean free path (λ) of 3.7 cm. In general, the developed materials performed better than the traditional neutrons shields and can be seen as promising materials for the intended use.
